She did all her own arrangements and moved more toward avant garde and progressive jazz as she matured. This album showcases first steps on that journey.
Joni’s arrangements are in a class all by themselves. The driving bass lines, those horns, the drums and tasty guitar licks. That sound only Joni can make. It’s truly an engineering marvel.
Joni's the kind of artist who will show you another face, another aspect of herself, just when you thought you had her pigeonholed . She's multi-faceted, and continued evolving stylistically throughout her career .
Joni Mitchell certainly qualifies as an artist for what she created with "Help Me". Simply beautiful. You would be very surprised when you know how many times "Help Me" has been covered by many musical artists.
Never saw her in person. Never spoke with her let alone interacted with he, but I can honestly say I have fallen in love with her. Not just her voice, but her persona. I am an empath and the love she is expressing is going straight to my heart. I have not had anyone hold me, kiss me or tell me they love me in years and suddenly her voice has me feeling so loved and wanted and I am in tears. Joni, I love you.
@@TheNoncritical1 - Clark might take you up on the offer. The US isn't all that wonderful. I love my country which just happens to be Canada. This isn't the forum for being rude.
I can’t begin to say who much Joni Mitchell’s music means to me. I have all here albums, and my son - 33 and my daughter- 30 grew up listening to her music on our road-trip vacations. This is one of my favorites. The range of her voice is other-worldly.
Joni is an artist that I’ve come back to as I’ve gotten older and I wonder how I missed the boat. Maybe I just needed to mature. Blue is an album that has only gotten better to my ear.
Court and Spark is magical. Damn! Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira too. Perhaps Hejira is her best / most perfectly formed? Her unique guitar tuning techniques made for some awesome chord progressions. I LOVE HER. PERIOD lol 🥰🙏🏽🤎
If I could only have 5 songs on a desert island for life, this would be one of them. I think this song is as close to perfect as it gets. For another side of Joni, check out her Raised on Robbery. Fun and cheeky, great storytelling with a hint of rockabilly...
We couldn't wait for a new Joni Mitchell album to come out. She opens up her soul, almost tells us her inner feelings so deeply! She is Awesomeness!🎶🎵🎼🎸🎹
@@IllumeEltanin well it's hardly "a cover version considering Joni Mitchell wrote it at the age of 23, she wasn't a recognised performer so she settled for writing for other artists, she always gave credit to Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell released "both sides now " in 1969 on her album "Clouds"
@@suemontague3151 Right. Two years after Collins version. Similar, although by a much wider gap in years, to The Monkees original of I'm A Believer in 1966 to Neil Diamond's "cover" of his composition in 1979.
So, follow this with Free Man in Paris, from the same LP, Court and Spark The Song 'Court & Spark' was covered in heart-wrenching fashion by Norah Jones and Herbie Hancock. (Hancock did an entire LP of jazzy Joni cover versions with a number of guests artists including Pink.)
Can’t believe I’ve heard nothing from Paul Simon’s “Graceland.” Under African Skies” and “Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes.” Memorable. Moving. Simon spins out Grammy Awards with legit South African Band during Apartheid. Some really great music here.
Joni Mitchell is one of the greatest artist of the last decades, not only she have a unique and beautiful voice but she's a really great song writer, she have a unique way to express simply the things that every human feel, based on her own reality....no doubt for me that she's the greatest Canadian artist of all time (with Leonard Cohen)....If you want to know more about her you should give a try to the albums ¨Blue¨ (1971) and ¨Hejira¨ (1976)....I would suggest you the song ¨River¨ from Blue ua-cam.com/video/3NH-ctddY9o/v-deo.html and the song Amelia from ¨Hejira¨ ua-cam.com/video/nxMwGTQ1bzU/v-deo.html. (the live version from a 1979 concert with two greats musicians, Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny)....the voice and the music are great, but with Joni Mitchell you have to listen to the words. Have a good day, from a French speaking guy in Montréal.
At that point she was introducing jazz elements into her music, she'd drift further in that direction on her next few albums. I like how she changes the 1st line of each verse, each starts with "Help me I think I'm falling" 1. "in love again", 2. "in love too fast" and 3. "in love with you." She goes from the general to the specific.
This is one of my favorite songs of Joni Mitchell, because of the talent and incredible voice Joni has, and also because of a lot of very good memories.
Court and Spark , The Hissing of Summer Lawns, and Hejira are her three best albums for me. They show her progression into jazz and she definitely finds her groove in many of those tracks. Try Harry's House/ Centerpiece -- maybe it was written for you. Amelia is one of my favorite songs ever.
One of the greats, the Canadians...Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, they were truly special. Joni's sick, Leonard's gone, Gordon is hanging on, I don't think he's going to be touring again.
Just in case you didn't know, Joni was Canadian born and raised. She attained most of her fame and acclaim in California, where she hooked up with Graham Nash (of CSNY and the Hollies) at least for a little while. He abused her, so they parted company. Joni has a vast catalogue, not a bad song anywhere. Have fun with her!
@@richardhornbostel3958 Ok, so I saw that Joni had been abused, but assumed it was Nash that did it. It was her first husband Mitchell who did it . Obviously, Joni was scarred for life. My favorite Joni song is Cactus Tree. Beautiful. Just like this one. She has a way of her own when it comes to song structure. Impossible to song karaoke to for sure! Lol. Good pick Harry!

By this abum (Court and Spark) Joni was fusing folk with rock and jazz, so yes, your observations are on point about her music sounding different. Later, she will venture into jazz full on, but in Joni's unique and inimitable way.
A wonderful Canadian artist, I adore from my late teens 🥰. Check out ‘Coyote’ one of my favorite Joni tunes, she has so many it’s hard to decide of course Big Yellow Taxi 🚕 is another very loved Joni song. 😻☮️🇨🇦💜
Harri you should give her song Coyote a listen and do the live version from the movie/concert The Last Waltz it’s a very outstanding performance promise you’ll absolutely enjoy it
You should give a listen to Rickie Lee Jones’ song Danny’s All-Star Joint. She too has a unique bluesy, jazzy, funky delivery. It too will blow your socks off like this sophisticatedly smooth song.
Joni surrounded herself with great jazz musicians like Jaco Pastorius and embraced jazz in an inventive and sometimes avant-garde way with her albums, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, Mingus and many of her later recordings. You should listen to these to see how she progressed as a musician and songwriter.

Excellent my friend! Joni gets a groove on this one. Thanks man peace
For many people, her best Pop tune. A perfect arrangement. Tom Scott's L.A. Express are the backing band (Larry Carlton on guitar).
What about “Free Man in Paris”?
Didn’t Robben Ford play with them for a while? I know he recorded some stuff with Larry’s son on bass.
Yes I think Joni with the LA Express was so fun and upbeat was fantastic 👏. I wore it out!
Well said. A perfect piece of jazz/folk. Couldn't be improved.
Larry Carlton is a tasty player.
The music of the 70s and 80s can't be beat! Eagles Fleetwood Mac. Tom Petty CSNY just to name a few.
Another great singer/songwriter was Laura Nyro. The Fifth Dimension did 5 of her songs-I loved Stoned Soul Picnic! Poverty Train is great too.
