Designing interactive eLearning lets you create engaging experiences where your learners can put their skills into practice. Interactivity can also let you create experiences where your learners have to "pull" the information out of your course, rather than you just "pushing" it onto them.
And with Articulate Storyline, the types of interactions you create can be as simple or as complex as you'd like! But before you get started, it's important to understand the basic building blocks of creating interactivity eLearning in Articulate Storyline.
So, in this How-To Workshop, I'll walk you through how to combine buttons, states, slide layers, and triggers to design basic interactivity in Articulate Storyline.

Tim, thanks for the contributions you freely make to our profession. I've learned so much from you as I continue to expand my eLearning development skills.
I was on the live version of this yesterday.....SO GOOD! I've been using Storyline for 6 years and was surprised by how much I didn't know.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’ve been using Storyline since it first came out 10 years ago and I’m always learning something new. 😊
Tim, your videos are a god send. You are a master!
I come back to this video over and over. Thank you!
I'm glad to hear it has been helpful!
This is THE BEST Storyline tutorial I've watched (and I've been watching a lot of them lately). Thank you so much for creating this video...I stoked to watch and learn more!
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it! Thanks for watching! Let me know if there are any other Storyline-related topics you’d like to see in the future!
This is all so helpful and I have been watching so many of your videos. But the elementary school projector just took me back. This is the BEST way to explain layers.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for posting this--definitely saving for future reference! I also really appreciate when you walked through how you solved certain problems when you were new to Storyline vs now.
Glad it was helpful, Carey!
Thank you for this easy-to-follow how-to workshop. I spent hours trying to figure out states, layers, and triggers. You gave clear explanations of each tool and step-by-step directions on how to use them. THANK YOU!
I’m glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I needed button sets in my life. I have been using Storyline 5 years and didn't know about it.
Ha! Trust me...I know what it's like! I was using Storyline for years before I discovered button sets. I'm glad it helped!
This video was AWESOME! I learned so much. Thank you Tim!
Thanks, Chloe! I’m glad you liked it!
Just Brilliant !!
Glad you liked it!
Thanking you from the bottom of my heart, you made this easy for me. It was too confusing for me.
Great video!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Wow. Thanks, David!
Thanks for Sharing!! I wonder if you can combine PowerPoint, Canva, and Articulate Storyline. If yes, please make a video, it would be awesome to hear your ideas.
Sure! Folks use PowerPoint and Canva to create graphics for their Storyline courses all the time. I'll add this to my list for future sessions!
Hey Tim, such great content. I have a question. In the beginning, you talk about ‘what kind of interactivities’ and when we should use them. Do you have a video for that?
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! I don't have a video for that just yet, but it's on my list! Stay tuned!
Continue to love your videos! Question? How do I get the curved line in your example?
Thanks, Teresa! The curved line came from one of the Articulate Content Library templates. I'll look and see if I can find which one it was.
@@elearningacdmy It’s ok Tim. Was just trying to copy your slide to go along with the training. Don’t worry about it. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for sharing. I can't seem to find the tab interaction slide on the content 360 library. Would you be able to point me in the right direction?
Glad you liked it! Unfortunately, I'm not able to link directly to anything in the content library...but you should be able to filter for interactions and find it that way.
Hi Tim. Are you by any chance know/ use iSpring software suite? Please, i would love to have some tutorials on it.🙂Im new in the eLerning design space and thank you for the awesome videos!
Hey Zelda! While I am familiar with iSpring, it's not a program I've used before for eLearning. However, my understanding is that it's pretty simple to get up and running with, since most of it is based on PowerPoint.
Hi Tim. I love your content. It is helping me so much. I have run into a problem with button states and I can't find an answer. I am running parallel on a mac (in case that is important) and I am trying to program hover states. They look great on the edit screen but don't work at all in preview. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Any tips?
Hey Joy! I'd have to see what's going on your end to best troubleshoot the issue. If you'd like, feel free to post it in our Advice & Feedback space in The eLearning Designer's Community and we can take a look: community.elearningacademy.io/c/advice/
Very nice way of explaining , can you please tell which articulate is this, i tried to download different ones, but none of them have the content library, how do i get the content library? thanks
Thanks for watching! This is Articulate Storyline 360.
How did you create the squiggly line graphic around the 6 min mark? Is it inserted using icons or illustrations or did you make it elsewhere and copy past?
Thank you. Your content is extremely valuable and helpful. I open your videos and follow and do all the things you're teaching.
Thanks for watching! That line came from one of the templates provided in the Articulate Content Library. I believe it's the "Vibrance" template. I hope that helps!
Hey Tim, I have one question - Can we add tooltip for inbuilt buttons (like notes or Resources). If so, can you please tell me how we can do that?
Hi Minal! Great question. There's no option to turn on a tool-tip like you suggested...however you could build one using a custom hover state. Let me know if that makes sense!
Yes for custom button I did added in the hover state but wanted the solution for the inbuilt buttons. Maybe we can do that with Java script, not sure (I don't know how to write Java script). If you could make a session on how to right Java script in Articulate Storyline, that would be great. Thanks!
What is the best hosting platform for articulate?
Great question! It really depends on what you need the hosting platform to do. For example, if you're wanting to distribute your course to your learners and track completions, then you'll need an LMS....however, I don't suspect that's what you're asking. If you want to simply host your finished course example on the web (for putting on a portfolio), then I recommend Google Cloud. And I'll be publishing a video in the near future on how to do that.
So, really dumb question: on your first slide, where did you get the graphics for the start, finish, and squiggly line? I was practicing by trying to mimic what you were doing. Under normal circumstances, I swear I spend more time just trying to find things I think should exist, and often don't (within Storyline). Because I was practicing, I didn't sweat it, but just wondering. Finding images and icons I want seems to be my biggest time drain. Anyhow, another great video. I was using it as a refresher, but I learning about the markers and button sets. BUTTON SETS!! Who knew? Thank you!
No worries! I believe I snagged it from one of the templates in the Articulate Content Library. Check under the Process Diagrams category…I think it’s in there. I’ll take a look later, once I’m back at my computer. Let me know if you find it. If not, I can just send you mine. 😊
Okay...I found it! It's in the Content Library...in the "Vibrance Template." It's the "Graphic Metaphor" slide. I hope that helps!
@@elearningacdmy Another shortcoming of mine--I haven't even explored the templates! Gaaaaa! So much to learn and see. I did find it, and I'm going to check out more of the templates while I'm here. Thank you!
@@allonsy9808 No worries! Enjoy! There's a lot of great templates in there.
you provide us xxxx$ for free. we really appreciate it so much. I got a question "Is it possible if i want to have an interactive map for my learners on articulate storyline? because the map is not the original element in storyline but rather my insertion."
Thanks! And yes...just insert the map as an image and use markers to make it interactive. That's one option.
Based on the last point. Lock down navigation. Why would you not be a fan of it? The reason I ask is my company require that people must have interactions with all learning points, they don't want people to just skip through the training materials without learning
Great question! Here's why: ua-cam.com/video/3oZOImWuyRU/v-deo.html
U talk too much lol .. may be keep it to the point..
No one forced you to keep watching. 😉
Thanks!
Thank you!
Thanks!
Thanks! I so appreciate it!
