i climb trees for work and when i climb srt i use a zigzag from petzel but in order for it to be safe you need to add a rope wrench in order to be able to repel because srt has double the weight on the rope compared to normal moving rope systems the rope wrench puts a s curve in the rope above the zigzag to add friction. before i got the zigzag i used a normal ddm hitch climber pully with a prusik and a rope wrench. without the rope wrench the hitch will bind up and youll get stuck in the tree from the extra weight. i dont think many arborist's use the gri gri i think thats more of a rock climbing thing. i also use a foot ascender along with a knee ascender and it makes climbing insanely easy. i can climb 60 feet in like 2 minutes easy. also mechanical ascenders are hard on most ropes unless you get ones ment for it. i use samson silver ivy and its made for both moving and stationary rope systems and holds up well. another good one is drenaline and theres a few more. pricy rope but worth it when ur life is on the line

This can all be done without any mechanical devices. Check out jrb tree climbing and saddle hunting on UA-cam.

Yes it can! John has a great channel as well and I use and recommend his system. I don't make videos on his stuff due to the fact those are johns ideas and not mine (copyright). But Johns systems are by far the safest and most quiet out there. I recommend his channel to a lot of people! Check out his Facebook group as well!

I believe it's possible to get rid of the mechanical ascender altogether - plus manufacturers like madrock recommend you back it up anyway. I'm gonna try it soon (since the idea is so recent, I've not fully run it through it paces) - but pretty sure with some simple mods, it'll get rid of most sound, other than the CT sliding up the rope. My foot loop will go on the pull down side - - as such it'll self tend the "system" when you step up.

It is possible to rid yourself of the mechanical ascender and use a friction hitch. However, for this particular system it is the mechanical based version of SRT climbing. Which can also be done, no mechanically. Check out JRB Tree Climbing channel for those tips! Thanks for watching

@@_RWOUTDOORS_ I did get rid of the Trango. Now using the Longhorn Agile hitch from JRB, with a snap link as a tender from Home Depot. Tends like a charm. As for the foot loop, I use JRB's as well, on the down side of the CT Quick Roll. Everything auto-tends, and connected to the rope at two places (hitch and foot loop). Cheaper way to do it all and I find it easier for me when it comes time to descend.

@@stevenl4494 The LAH is my favorite hitch by JRB for SRT climbing. Paired with his Garda footloop. It works very well and helps keep slack maintained throughout the climb. Pair that with a Munter hitch to descend and you're golden!

@@_RWOUTDOORS_ 👍👍 I'm opting for a figure 8 on the descent....the ability to lock it at height just appeals. Nothing at all wrong with the munter....both work. Love this approach to SRT....so easy, and simple.

I just asked about a set up like this on FB guy though it sounded crazy

Also get a small cmc pulley and make that in to a three to one and in we’ll eliminate the nose.

@@joshuagrochowski6999 Happens a lot lol, and yes the CMC pulley makes for a quieter ascend. CT Climbing makes a hand ascender with a CMC pulley built on. Cost a few extra dollars but worth saving the noise. Thanks for watching!

I've saddle hunted like this for well over a decade. Lengthen your foot loop a bit and push down and behind yourself. It's easier, so you don't have to jump up and make the grigri clap. Or even better, try the S.M.A.R.T. Method, instead of the S.R.T Method, for an easier, quicker, and quieter climb. ua-cam.com/video/-XmsiY7eBiM/v-deo.html I hope you include it in your series. Good luck with your channel.

Awesome to know this isn't a new trend! (it is to me lol). But we will be adding a lot more to this series in the off season on the multiple styles of saddle hunting. Ropes, One sticking, Sticks, DSRT, etc. Thanks for watching!
