    Just did my Lifeguarding pre-test an hour ago, this is my second attempt, but now my second failed attempt, 0-2. First time around, I failed at the 300 swim, but this time around, I was able to get pass the 300 swim, but as soon as I got to the tread, I wasn't able to do it without my hands, and I had watched your video on how to tread water with no hands over and over again, about 20 times, I did the motions on a 90 degree chair an hour before to help me suffice the same motion I would get out of actually doing the motion in the water, but when it came to the real deal, I failed. My instructor told me that I can attempt the course again later this summer. My fault for not attempting to train in the pool first on my own time, instead of doing the treading during the test and failing. This is a very hard blow to me, I volunteer at a fire department right now, auxiliary, I really want to have the peace in mind of me getting lifeguarding on my resume, so I can get a better opportunity become an Operational Volunteer, and me not completing this twice, makes me second-guess my career path... I still hope I can attempt the 3rd time and be totally ready for what's to come in the future, because even though ive taken this punch to the gut, twice, I want to end this round with a F#@$ing knockout, and thats what I will train for. The thing is, I don't have a license yet, my parents have government jobs and I got a grandfather who has Dementia + Alzheimer's, add on 4 dogs, I don't really have good time to go and practice on my own time, I wish I did, If you could give me some good tips, about how I can better myself, and maybe a video about the emotional after-blow of failing the Pre-test repeatively, would be so so SO appreciated, I wish to keep you updated on my goals with lifeguarding, I really want this, and Im not going to push everything I've done so far under the rug to get here that easily.
    Thank you, Adam, for your video's!

      @@SimplySampled rock it, make sure to maintain a good Rythm for breathing, and if your doing breaststrokes, keep your feet slightly below the waters surface, not too high to where your splashing, not too low to where you aren't going anywhere. Don
      't try to pace yourself with the person next to you, be patient, and roll into the pool and start when ready! P.S. USE GOGGLES!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

    Thx Adam. It's timely b/c I'm doing my blended recert class THIS WEEK! Crazy how it's already almost been 2 years for me since beginning my lifeguarding journey. I was talking with my supervisor about the changes, and I anticipate a pretty smooth process. Got the online portion of the recert course completed just a bit ago.

    Hey thanks for the update. I’ve been trying to do the treading water thing for over a month I’ve been trying to do the breaststroke kick and the eggbeater and I just can’t figure it out. The only one I can do is flutter kicks and I can do that for about a minute. Is there any other type of kick that’s as easy as the flutter kick but a little less tiring. I think I’m just a really slow learner but my test is coming up in a week and I’m starting to panick a bit.

    Thank You Adam.. I was going to ask about the requirements because I started seeing the new requirements mentioned in course when I searched for more info. I am curious, is the brick depth distance different. It used to be 7 -10 ft, I have started seeing 7 -12 ft?

    • @LifeofAdam
      @LifeofAdam  2 місяці тому +1

      It honestly depends on the pool where u take the course. I would say anywhere between 9-12 ft.

    Elementary backstroke kick works best for me to swim with the brick.

    How should I be training before hand? My course starts next week and I have no idea if I'm prepared (since the last time I swam was last year). I'm not sure if I should be worried or not because I'm generally athletic as I weight train, do basketball, and do football.

    • @tonyjumpscliffs
      @tonyjumpscliffs 2 місяці тому

      I'd also like to mention I've been swimming my whole life in rivers, beaches, lakes, and pools. Every summer I've always swam so it's not like I'm uncomfortable In water.

      @@user-hx5pi1zt6v honestly I practiced a good amount before I actually took the test. As for techniques during it, I swim down there as fast as I can so I save time then take a deep breath, go down and get it and give a little push off the bottom of the pool. Once I come up with the brick I non stop bicycle kick with the brick on my chest.

      My best tip for this (being a current lifeguard) would be to fully inflate your chest and hold your hips up. This will help you stay at the surface.

      I’ve tried to hold my hips up but I start sinking and I don’t have enough time to bring my hips up or keep myself horizontal.

    I’m trying to train by attempting to complete the test. However, YMCA has a different pretest on their website and I’m confused by which test I’ll be asked to complete when I find a place that has a class. I didn’t grow up doing swim team or anything so I can’t be surprised by any skills when I get there. Any advice about the pretest or a better way to train?

    • @LifeofAdam
      @LifeofAdam  2 місяці тому +5

      When u find a class, I would ask the instructor to confirm the pretest format. Then whatever it is, I’d practice in a pool beforehand. Regardless, old & new format are extremely similar, just pace yourself and trust your ability. I didn’t do swim team either, u got this.
