We’ve lived here for four years already and I just can’t figure out how to arrange furniture or what to buy to replace the old furniture. Then there’s the windows, the lanai, the lighting, etc. So much. This was my very first video to see and I was encouraged. I look forward to watching more. Thank you.

These tips are excellent! I have an open plan, and I had always wanted a TV corner. Not until this year, I did what Julie says “Define the areas”. After a lot of thinking I managed to get 4 distinct areas: sitting room (with no TV!), dining area, TV corner and kitchen with an island and bar stools. I am thoroughly enjoying it!
Looking at this again, as I need some ideas. The condo I'm looking at has a good sized kitchen tucked into a back corner of the great room LR/DR. The original cupboards are painted cream, good hardwood floors from the entry across and into the kitchen. I think the solution is cabinet colour to echo colour used in the main room. Plus filling in the area between the top of the cabinets or doing away with upper cabinets altogether. Thanks Julie - love your videos.
Enjoy all the Julie Khuu regardless if they are applicable to me. The cadence of the video from room to room allows me to focus in on objects before you cut to another room. Hello Julie! My daughter has recently moved into her own house. As she asks me for decorating advice I keep your tips and rules in mind. Her place really coming together nicely. Supper modern, open concept, and edgy. Thank you for your videos 🌹
Perfect timing! I’ve been working on this the past few months for my open concept apartment. Wow I love the openness but trying to section off living spaces is hard, all while keeping the design and flow right.
Hi Julie I just find your channel and binge -watched every episodes. You are an inspiration. Am I the only person who doesn’t like open concept homes?! 😅 I need more than furniture to separate rooms. I don’t mind the dining area and kitchen to be open but the living room needs to be separated for me to feel cozy.
I love open concept since I have young kids I can watch over from any vantage point. Ask me again in 10 years when I have wild teens roaming the house! 😆
I loved how you analyzed the different "awkward" spaces -- I got a ton of ideas and understood how to better handle my own open floor plan concept. Thank you so much!!
Just what I need to know for a new build. Thanks so much for advice on overhead fixtures, and for saying that a location does not have to dictate an interior style. Good job.
Howdy Julie, I enjoyed the series. This last one especially because my home is open concept. I'm thinking about making a few changes. I hope you and your family are doing well. Thanks! 🏠💖🤗
Thank you for the tip on flooring zones. This allows me to use tile around kitchen, which has been opened upwith beautiful wood bulkhead. And floor boards in open living /dinig areas.
Lots of new builds have galley style open space living room kitchen areas with formal dining in a completely different room. Would love this aspect to be addressed, especially with corner fireplaces and the entryways cutting through the space. I've never felt so cramped while having so much space. you are stunning and I love your channel. Thank you!!!!
I am so excited, I just discovered your site and truly appreciate the info you give, I began turning my home into Feng shui after watching your videos and will continue to do so. Thank you so very much for your videos.
I'm an Italian writing from Spain. I'm in the process of building extensions to our large house to create a boutique hotel. I would love to see all of this but on a tiny scale. I'm planning on two 20 metres extensions ,where I need to incorporate kitchen/dining/ sitting area. The spaces are rectangular with possible 2 outside doors either end and windows on one side for the magnificent views. Bedrooms and bathrooms already exist. Compliments on your EXCELLENT video. Please, please do show us all of this in tiny spaces.
Wow, what a mountain of great information. It was layered and each topic zone was connected and it was easy to transition from one to another without mental clutter. 😉🙏
Thank you Julie you have answered a few of our open plan queries. Question: how to include and separate a not very lit craft/art area from the living zone. To let more light in would screens work? I'm finding your tutorials very helpful. Love your examples.

Thank you so much. I love your channel. I have a laundry closet in my kitchen, but I would like to put the refrigerator in there instead & put a stackable washer & dryer next to it. Then hang a nice design curtain panel in front of the half with W/D & leave refrigerator half open. This will be exactly opposite of where dining area is too (13 feet apart). Not sure how that look though?
I have that exact same condition in my mid-century Modern Ranch style home. Unfortunately I can’t stack my W/D bc of height restrictions, but I removed the awful accordion doors and placed curtains instead. The ultimate in functionality plus provides a nice backdrop for some of the videos you see on my channel. We’re in sync 🙌🏻

Thank you Julie! Your tips with the examples and case studies are so useful. I can stop the video and think if I like some of the solutions made there.
Love, love, love your videos! Are you planning on doing an Awkward Space Solutions on rooms in a turret or tower? I love all the windows in those rooms, but find furniture placement difficult whether it's to be a reading room or a bedroom. No matter how the room is used, I don't want to turn my back to the windows or the view.
Thanks, Julie! This has been a great series. I have a brand new open concept home, and I’m going nuts trying to figure out the living/dining space. It’s chevron shaped and a bit of a nightmare to try to style.
I have waited for this episode all series ... Thank you! My open plan challenge is a long, 20ft wide aka narrow kitchen-dining-living combo where the U-shaped kitchen at one end, perfectly centered 6ft French doors in the living space at the other plus fixed placement for ceiling lighting and cable TV somewhat dictate functional zones and furniture placement. Your tips have been super helpful.
Wow, your home did all the planning, now it’s time for the right scaled furniture Ann-Marie! Check out my Dream Space series, particularly the episode on scale and proportion if you need more help!
I really loved the quiz aspect of this episode, it got us to put all the lessons together in our minds and think critically. Thank you Julie, the series was great 👍
Some people mentioned that the benefits of open floor plan is to observe everything and everyone at the same time, if u have kids or elderly that u want to keep an eye on. Some other people are used to having rooms with purpose, dining for eating, kitchen for cooking, living for watch tv and gathering, etc. So it's back to the living habits of the clients. As a designer, i always ask that before designing layout for the house. But for limited space, such as apartment, i suggest open floor plan, for a spacious feeling.
Julie, I love all your videos and am going to make sure i watch every single one! Could you consider a video on how to design around different flooring. Cos flooring is likely one of the things in a house that wd be most difficult and expensive to change. For example my house has marble and i havent been able to find much examples on how to do interior design for this.
I loved this video. I have gotten a lot of inspiration from it. My question is how can you work with a basement living space? I find that those spaces are more awkward. And lighting becomes an issue as well. Thanks for continually educating us one video at a time.
Been getting a lot of requests for the basement, so I will add it to the list Orlet! I would design it like any other family room/ living space- please let me know your biggest challenge so I can address it in the video. Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
What do you think about floor plugs for open concept areas? I personally hate the look of it but we're building a huge open concept kitchen/dining/living area and I'm afraid no floor plugs will make the area unusable for practical stuff. Thank you for doing this series!!
I specify them all the time GV. Absolute must so you don’t have unsightly and dangerous cords dangling everywhere. Of course the kicker is your space already has to be thought out so you know exactly where to locate the plugs.
This was fantastic! Thank you so much, Julie. Question: I have a relatively large, rectangular, open concept space that includes the family room, dining area, and kitchen. If I want to make sure that all 3 spaces coordinate, which area should I start in? Should I start in the kitchen and work my way out? Thank you again for such wonderful and helpful content! ❤️
Start with the space that inspires you most! If you found amazing stools and island pendant lamps start there. If your seating group in the family room is the main attraction, prioritize that. Do what you love and you won’t get it wrong 🙌🏻
I loved this video. Thank you for breaking everything down so clearly and concisely! My fireplace wall is right next to the sliding glass door and I just don't love the look of the TV over the fireplace...is it odd to place the TV on the Wall perpendicular to the fireplace??
I learned a lot. Thanks. I hope to make good use of all these information in the process of choosing our next residence which will simply be significantly smaller is square footage! 🙏
Love your video, Julie. Thanks for sharing your tips. Very helpful. We just acquired a property so we are starting from bare living spaces. Hope to find the best one from your videos.
@@JulieKhuu I think I already watched all your videos. LOL. I'm also Asian based in Canada. We follow the Feng Shui tips back home. We watched your Feng Shui edition too. I would like to ask your advise re: long narrow hallway in the entrance and across a window. The thing is, we cannot install sconces for now as this entails electrician/contractor, which is not within our budget. Please let me know, so I can give some details. We haven't ordered any furniture yet coz we are moving in late next week. Hope we move in on full moon, though. Thanks, Julie!
This was so good I'm going to rewatch them all- and this time take notes! :-D I'm looking into my open concept living/dining area, and I'm going to use this to see how I can make look more cohesive and spacious. Thanks, Julie!
Hi Julie, loving your videos and learned so much about interior designing. Could you please make video on stairs , textured walls and patterns. Also would like to see the video on good colour combinations for kitchen considering splash-back, benchtop and cupboards ❤️
Been waiting for this episode, thanks for the video! Do you have any tips for creating the focal wall? Mine is a long wall shared between living and dining rooms. The dining table is up against the focal wall (still need to buy a bench), and the focal point in my living room is my piano (no tv, no fireplace).
Sounds like my space situation, too! But my dining room has corner windows and the focal wall is shared between two spaces. The concert grand is a focal point of the living room but I’m having a hard time figuring out how to design a space around it and making it practical for daily use.
Love this series! I have a open plan kitchen & living area but almost no space for dining. The kitchen is very close to entryway which make it even more awkward. Any advice on that?
Great topic. I sit here in my living room, 20x14, high ceiling has a "high/low" bend like a "swimming pool" shallow/deep end, and a ledge as well. We painted it all white years ago and plan to add white modern ceiling trim. Fingers crossed!
Hi JK, I’m JT from AU. I’ve learned so much every time I watch your video Can’t wait for your next one. ps I have been watching all of your series again and again that’s how much I loved your design, recreation, intelligent and beautiful always 🥰😘❤️
Hi Julie, I like all of your videos, you are doing a great job in helping people to design their own space.Even I was talking about your channel with my friends and colleagues. Can kitchens and dinning have a seperate flooring design apart from the rest if the rooms ?? We are planning to install white coloured tiles in other rooms and planning to install a dark japanese wooden tone tile in our kitchen and dining room. Will it be a good choice ??

Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Thank Julie. I rarely watch long video ( except drama). I love your video. Very interesting and keep me engaged.
Thank you for watching Hao! For me, it’s Kdrama 😆
@@JulieKhuu haha 😆 same here
Thank you Julie! Your tips with the examples and case studies are so useful. I can stop the video and think if I like some of the solutions made there.
It helps to determine how you would use the space and if you can spot the issues to resolve 👍🏻
I haven’t yet, but totally up for the challenge Lainy! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Thanks, Julie! This has been a great series. I have a brand new open concept home, and I’m going nuts trying to figure out the living/dining space. It’s chevron shaped and a bit of a nightmare to try to style.
You create the angled shapes you want Amie! Check out my Dream Space series for more tips on furniture layouts 👍🏻☺️
Your content is so helpful and enjoyable. Your professional manner and personal insights are priceless.
Thank you for watching Sarah! 🙏🏻☺️
Thank you Julie, the series was great 👍
Awesome! 🙌🏻 It’s all about working with what we’ve got DP 👍🏻
Exactly, function first always Blair 🙌🏻☺️
Excellent advice and great visuals. Wonderful videography, easy and enjoyable viewing!
Thank you so much for watching and supporting the channel Eileen ☺️🙏💖
Question: How do you know when to panel a high-end refrigerator and when to leave it stainless steel? Great video, by the way! :)
Hi. Wow, the akward space - open concept video was just what I needed. I found all my areas to tweak. Thank you. ❤️
I am not a fan of these super open rooms but I learned a lot from this video. I really need to get a rug to anchor my living area.
Open concept isn’t for everyone, but a large expansive rug can help ground just about any space Ruth 👍🏻☺️
I have a flooring guide up now, check it out Lydia 🙏🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu wow is it a video? Will check it out
Very good series!!! Thank you for covering these topics!!
Thank you for watching D! 🙏🏻☺️
Thank you for the thoughtful advice.
Julie, I watched this repeatedly, this was helpful as I’m currently in a my small studio apartment!
👩🏻🍳🤗
Hope you got some good layout tips Ruth 🙏🏻☺️
Remodeling 3 areas of my 20 yr old
House. Thank you for your videos. I wish I had you right here to help me! Hahaha.
It’s like I’m there with these videos Irma! You got this 🙌🏻
I loved this video. Thank you for breaking everything down so clearly and concisely! My fireplace wall is right next to the sliding glass door and I just don't love the look of the TV over the fireplace...is it odd to place the TV on the Wall perpendicular to the fireplace??
Not odd at all, that is my recommendation based on your condition Emily 👍🏻
Love this video! So many gems shared. Thank you, Julie.
Thank you for watching Tessa! 🙏🏻☺️
I learned a lot. Thanks. I hope to make good use of all these information in the process of choosing our next residence which will simply be significantly smaller is square footage! 🙏
The smaller the space, the more creative you can get with the design Marylou 🙌🏻☺️
I'm so addicted to your videos! I love the content and your willingness to share your knowledge!! Thank you!!
Thank you for watching Sherricca! Hope I’m steering you in the right direction 👍🏻☺️
This is everything I have been waiting for, thanks so much!
Thank you for watching Sarah! 🙏🏻☺️
Love your video, Julie. Thanks for sharing your tips. Very helpful.
We just acquired a property so we are starting from bare living spaces. Hope to find the best one from your videos.
Thank you for watching Nini! Start with my Dream Space series- it will help with a step by step design guide 👍🏻
Awesome! Can’t wait to hear how you make it work Robyn! 🙌🏻☺️
I have never seen a person with so many cool outfits!
Thank you for watching Sam! Fashion is my first love ☺️
This video helped me tremendously! Thank you Julie, I really love and appreciate your channel ✨✨✨
Thank you so much for watching 🙏😊
Hi Julie, loving your videos and learned so much about interior designing. Could you please make video on stairs , textured walls and patterns. Also would like to see the video on good colour combinations for kitchen considering splash-back, benchtop and cupboards ❤️
Thank you for watching Swetha- check out my video on timeless kitchen backsplash and countertop combinations. I’ll work out the rest 👍🏻☺️
This was fantastic, Julie! Thank you. Keep it coming! We’re remodeling a long narrow space and this was invaluable!
Awesome, check out the long and narrow room in this awkward space series as well Marcia! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Been waiting for this episode, thanks for the video! Do you have any tips for creating the focal wall? Mine is a long wall shared between living and dining rooms. The dining table is up against the focal wall (still need to buy a bench), and the focal point in my living room is my piano (no tv, no fireplace).
I have a video coming up on creating focal walls Jade! Stay tuned 🙏🏻☺️
Sounds like my space situation, too! But my dining room has corner windows and the focal wall is shared between two spaces. The concert grand is a focal point of the living room but I’m having a hard time figuring out how to design a space around it and making it practical for daily use.
What a an excellent video. It's full so useful and inspiring. Thank you
Thank you for watching Diego 🙏🏻☺️
What great tips and suggestions! You are a true artist, Julie
Thank you for watching Liz! ☺️🙏🏻
Love this series! I have a open plan kitchen & living area but almost no space for dining. The kitchen is very close to entryway which make it even more awkward. Any advice on that?
Smaller living room furniture will open your space up for dining. Check out my small space series on dining rooms/ studios Vivian 👍🏻☺️
This video helped me a lot , had doubts about right choice of draperies because of open concept&different windows&zones, thank you, ciao😘
So many ways to address the window treatments in an open concept space Elena. Have fun with it and always remember that nothing has to match! 🙌🏻😉
Thank you so much, very useful. Your video helped me a lot to design my current space . Looking forward to learn more.

Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Thanks so much for all your tips! I have open concept and I didn’t know how to decorate it! I got great ideas through this video, thank you!!
Awesome Silvia! Now for the fun part, shopping 🙌🏻
Great topic. I sit here in my living room, 20x14, high ceiling has a "high/low" bend like a "swimming pool" shallow/deep end, and a ledge as well. We painted it all white years ago and plan to add white modern ceiling trim. Fingers crossed!
White on white will hide all the funky variations 👍🏻
@@JulieKhuu thank you great point! after I started watching your videos I warmed up to the idea for sure.

The houses are amazing to begin with.
It’s a great choice if you love it and it reflects your style and needs Tamilar! Thank you for watching and the support 🙏🏻☺️
I love this series! Thanks for all the helpful tips. I've been struggling to design an open plan room with different levels (sunken/platform). Any tips on how to design such a space and maintain separation in a cohesive way would be so helpful
