Love all your videos, but this is the one I’ve been waiting for! We just moved into a home with open concept, and I was at a loss as how to make it feel connected. My style and furniture are British colonial, but the kitchen is modern and all white. I actually became inspired by your love of blue, and used blue and white chinoiserie pieces in the kitchen and living area to help it feel connected. Your videos inspire me to work with what I already have, and I love that for me! I appreciate the time and work you put into your videos to give us a wealth of information.
You nailed it with windows. I got similar advice that they should relate, not match but be like a collection, even in partial open concept. And I am with you: no rugs on carpet. Keep saying it, coming from a professional maybe more will resist the temptation.
Garrett, your video content, editing and graphics are so professional and polished. And the way you deliver your experience and expertise is excellent. It makes it look more spacious and the openness invites people to hang around together but, I prefer the coziness of separate rooms. Do a two tiered counter to hide “the Mess” 36” counter with a 42” surround. Increases your counter space and hides all the ills of cooking nd clean up after dinner. I’d rather enjoy my guests than look at what I need to do after. Also gives a great height for people to gather without having their hands and drinks set all over the work area. HATE that.
I cannot stand the concept of putting a kitchen in the living room and that’s pretty much what’s happening in an open floor plan. Have a kitchen large enough to place some sort of arrangement where some could gather together in the kitchen. Keep the LR separate, a LR is a different vibe. Of course speaking on a built home.
"They're not twins" perfect! I'm going to use that. As far as scents go, I think several small vases of lavender sprigs (not the flowers, just some cut stems) are the perfect way to add a natural and lovely scent to a space. These are available year round and lavender is sooooo easy to grow in a container. In fact, just cut some stems and stick them into dirt and they will grow quickly into small lavender bushes that require little to no maintenance. Candles are too much an unhealthy chemical both in scent and smoke.

I bought an older home with 10’ and 12’ ceilings and was able to get the floors replaced and everything painted before moving in. My contractor had gotten to know me and knew that I wanted to be selective with what I would spend more money on, and for what I would bargain hunt. He thought I was a little cuckoo paying a chunk more for 7.5” baseboards throughout the house vs 6.5” baseboards. At the end, though, he agreed it was worth it. They’re just plain square edge and look fabulous with my tall walls. 🙂
I have a 1910 bungalow and all the baseboards are a full 8 inches. We did a gut on the 1970’s attic addition and had a carpenter replicate the millwork in the downstairs, down to the plinths on the doorways. I love bold millwork.
This is one of your best videos yet, Garrett! All these tips for integrating our open spaces are wonderful. My favorite design element in my open floor plan is the gorgeous wood-look LVP floors and 5" baseboards I just had installed. One floor throughout my home makes the space feel huge, and I'm freshening up other decor to complement we the "new" look and feel. It's definitely one of the best investments I've ever made! Thank you, and cheers on over 40,000 LeChic subscribers!!! 🥰🥰🥰

Been binge watching your videos and I'm addicted! Love most of them, you're so full of ideas and reasons why they should or should not be and they are so makes sense.
I have an open concept living, kitchen, dining, and music room with light from all directions. There's one flooring in the whole house, and the large space has one color. Make sure that the color can survive all the light coming in! I really enjoy hanging art but there's something beautiful about letting the spaces breathe.
I've used many of these concepts when decorating my open space. Had carpet in the family room and dining room, vinyl in the kitchen and eat-in. Replaced with engineered wood throughout. Looks so much better and actually made the space look bigger. I have different light fixtures in each area but they all have a chrome finish. Artwork isn't in line but I am creating a gallery wall.
I'm in an apartment so scent tends to be the whole place, but I love essential oils. At the moment I'm alternating between rosemary and lemon essential oil in a burner - fresh, natural, and clean. I keep it near my kitchen and bathroom because that's where most of the smells are produced that I'm trying to counteract! (cleaning only going so far)
My house is open concept and while I save to replace carpeting (it's apartment building grade beige at the moment yuck) I shop for affordable, yet beautiful, drapes that totally take the eye off the floor. I have a range of tones in the hunter green/teal/cerulean family that transition from the living room, to the dining room, and into the office/nook area. It's coordinated but not matchy. Despite my carpets people compliment my house every time they visit - which thankfully is more and more!
OH! I had that same carpet! I hated it. My workplace is also all beige so I was sick of it. I no longer consider beige a color lol. I was stunned when I had all my floors replaced and the installer saw the original carpet layers name and date on it. This carpet was 21 years old! Gave me the heebee jeebee’s.
This is going to be so helpful for dealing with our 1br apartment that's basically open concept and just feels like a huge challenge. Also I want to request a video for choosing rug styles- although you've covered sizes in other vids I'd love to learn more about the different styles, patterns, and colors and how designers choose them.
Garrett, this video gave me the tick of approval I needed not to 'overfill' my open concept home! It just felt right as is - cool, eclectic but quite minimal - you saying let it breathe gave me the boost I needed! Thank you!
I have several Los Angeles Pottery cookie jars from the 60s. They are a rich gold color with fruits or flowers that were applied before the the firing of the pottery. I found a set of foo dogs that are 12” tall and the same golden color and are in the greenhouse window. A Los Angeles gold spoon rest on the stove ties the colors together with a valance that is gold, red and black. They look good with stainless steel appliances. You will never say enough of area rugs needing rug tape. Not only for decorating a room but also as a safety factor. Loved the video.
"maybe they're cousins ? they're not twins" - great saying , so much good information and advice yet again. 👏 hadn't realised we have the same wood tone in 3 areas in our home . most bought over the years and by happy accident appear to be 'cousins' 😂
I agree with the idea of all wood in open concept. I installed lvp flooring in my open concept and it certainly elevated my home. It makes the space look larger and more unified for sure!
Until this year, we have always lived in homes that were old and didn’t have an open concept layout. Yes, during renovations I would get rid of long hallways that were nothing more than wasted space but doing an open concept would take away from the home’s vintage “character.” However, this year we are moving into our fantasy home (the fantasies include screened-in back porch, big front porch, swimming pool, laundry and master on the first level, and two car garage). In looking for the fantasy home, I remember we came across two homes that checked all the boxes and were perfect. UNFORTUNATELY, they broke a key rule you mentioned in this video…they had beautiful hardwood flooring throughout the open concept but had tile in the entrance foyer or tile in the kitchen. The break up of wood and tile looked awful. There was just no way to pull up the tile and put down new hardwood because it would not look right. I certainly could not justify ripping up all the hardwood and tile to put down new hardwood. So, we just had to walk away. Those two homes took awhile to sell and I am convinced it was because of the tile/wood mix in open concept.
Yes, it certainly can be. Thanks for watching! Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven't already, and join us as a very valued subscriber. :)
Another great video! Our new house is open concept and we put bamboo flooring through the entire house except for the bathrooms and laundry room, which are tile. Having a uniform floor makes it feel cohesive.
I’m intimidated by our new kitchen-dining-living area and this is sooo helpful! Especially the lighting tips. Thank you! Will be putting roses everywhere though, not just on the coffee table 😂
Yet another useful and practical video, Garrett, and I find my respect for you vis a vis other on-line decorators increasing continually. The examples of interiors you provide are both beautiful and illustrative of the points you're making.
I always like your videos and let me tell you, HONEY!!! This one is no exception. It is so informative and still so entertaining. I can’t look away!! 😀

I never heard anyone speak of scents when it comes to design~how interesting! And I would agree about keeping one scent only throughout; it's so logical!! And you've got a new subscriber-Yay!!
Big Fan. This was an amazing detailed approach to open concept. I know now what to do to better accessorize and take our new home up a notch, thanks so very much!!
Thank you, Garrett! I've been struggling with putting in a light fixture in my living room space. Since I have already decided on our over island pendants in our open concept great room, I can now narrow down my choice of styles of floor lamp to those that talk the same language as kitchen lighting.
Subscriber for awhile but really binge watching your content right now during my post flood renovation. My house is open concept on the first floor and this is so helpful. Thank you!
Great video, if I ever get around to building I may share pics of my open concept space. It's open concept to maximise airflow in the tropics with the kitchen down wind so that hot air is pushed out and smells also.
This was extremely helpful. I was wondering how Albert feels about mixing textures. Also, what does Cornelius think about the wallpaper trend? Thanks for the valuable and clear content! ❤️❤️
Garrett, thank you for addressing the fresh clean smelling home, especially the part where you say, not every room needs to have a scent. There's nothing more migraine inducing than different smells mixing together. 😨 Also, as a person who was afraid of mixing metals, I feel like you've taught us the proper way to do that.
Omg I needed this video so much!!!! I have an Open concept, and like G said “struggling!!!!” I need help with the sound (so loud when people are over). I’m struggling with selection of light fixtures!!! I have this round wall of windows, what do I do with that? It’s overwhelming! But this video helped me alot!!! Can we get more videos on this exact subject please???
So many great tips! Especially love the concepts of furniture on the rug & the height of lighting fixtures. I’m challenged with coming up with a reading lamp in a great room with the sofa & end table away from any outlets. Missed seeing one of your sweet pups in this video 🐶
Really loved this video. I’m moving into a brand new, just developed open concept home. I will absolutely keep in mind your advice when replacing the “generic “, fixtures like lighting etc. thanks once again!
This video provides a ton of great information. Thank you, especially for the information on lighting. You answered one of my questions. The other ? For me has to do with the LR area rug, which I need to replace. I like a neutral look so that my small open-concept condo doesn’t feel cluttered. Should I match the LR area rug in general hue and tone to the floor, or to the couch? The floor is dark brown and the couch is greige. My kitchen is a mixture of medium brown ‘wood’ and greige countertop and a few doors, and the accessories throughout are in shades of greyish blue.
Thanks so much! Unfortunately, without actually seeing a space, the furniture and decor I can’t offer an intelligent opinion. I might be offering a service later this year for virtual individual interior decorating consultations on a limited basis for those who want my opinion on their specific space. 😊😊
I can’t even imagine how much the drapes cost in that picture you used when speaking about mixing metals, but keeping light fixtures the same. TWO STORY CUSTOM DRAPES?!?! (probably took an eternity to get them too).
Hello 👋 I don’t have an open concept home, but it almost feels a little like it because I have very large entrances to each room so everything has to flow. I have a large living room, but not the ceiling height for a chandelier moment, and I definitely needed a light fixture that was large, I found a round light fixture flush mount with a chandelier-esk vibe it still wasn’t as large as I’d like it to be so I custom made a decorative large medallion for it and I am loving it! Your videos are the best! Thank you 😊
When your ideas and suggestions apply to my areas, they are right on! One thing that I've done in my open space is to have two swivel chairs that are great for conversation from living area to kitchen. Thank you Garrett. (I missed seing a 🐶 on this video.)
Such great advice - I'm going to watch this one again. I'm actually not a big fan of open concept, though that's what I have (competitive real estate market - it was that or nothing). For one thing, I don't like sitting on my couch with the kitchen in view - I swear I snack more because of it. That being said, I've used the same paint color throughout for cohesion. The kitchen and dining room floor tiles are the same neutral stone color and the wall-to-wall carpet in the family room is almost the same color, so that's tolerable. In my fantasies, I win lotto and gut the place. Or just move!
Really great video, Garrett, thank you so much for your advice and tips. I live in a small Parisian apartment rather than an open space but your ideas, like using a single scent, are still valid for me. Love from Paris xxx
Hi Garret, thank you for addressing this issue with your exquisite expertise. I just moved to an open concept condo last year and I think I have done a pretty good job. I managed to do a lot of what you talk about here totally by accident lol. I was particularly interested when you touched on the feature wall. Would you be able to give some more advice in an upcoming video about feature walls? Are they in? Are they going out? I want to wallpaper one wall behind my bed but now I'm wondering if it would be LeChic Approved?! 😘
Hi Kim! I’ve already addressed feature walls in previous videos. I’m not a fan of them. There are definitely better and more elevated ways to bring attention into a room like beautiful art for example. 😊😊😊
I could not find a large enough coffee table for my large living space. So I improvised and used a large round glass table but flanked it with a potted plant in a Cool pot and a basket with blankets on both sides. I get continuous complements on how beautiful it is.
I recently found and subscribed to your channel, and find your advice really sensible and in line with my opinions (but much more informed/expert!). We're currently in the process of designing an open-concept house to be built at some future date, which will be our first open-concept home. I would appreciate some advice/tips on entertaining. Holidays, weekend get-togethers, family events (birthdays, graduations), etc. I, and I do not believe I am alone , would appreciate your expertise in this area. Thank you.
Thanks so much Kimberly! While we do entertain, not so much as of late with Covid, I’m not an expert on event planning. I think perhaps someone who does that type of work would be better to ask questions of that nature to.
Garrett, thank you million for all your advice! It has been very real-worldly and practical; and hopefully remains such. We are exactly in the situation where we have a transition from carpet to vinyl. For financial reasons, we are replacing the carpet with hardwood floors one room at a time, doing it ourselves. The goal is to have hardwood floors everywhere, but that could be back breaking experience, lol. When you show that floor transition photo, I thought "yep, that's us". 😅
Hi Garrett I would like to have your opinion I have a semi open space (living and dining together) as like you my favorite color is blue, I do have two blue captain chairs on the dinning room and at the moment I am looking for two accent chairs for my living room, I have a warm tone gray couch do you think should I go with blue so the color will flow from one space to the other one or should you think I should go with different color and add accent blue pillows ? BTW I’m a new subscriber and I love how you keep it real🥰love a person who loves color 💙color makes me happy 😊
Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel Ana. It's great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. Later this year, I might be offering a service for virtual interior decorating consultations on a limited basis for those who want an individual decorating opinion.
I have an open concept home so this video was great for me. My big dilemma is always my living room. One wall is two windows and a fireplace, an adjacent wall to that is a solid wall then there are two open spaces one that leads off of one of those walls to my office and one that leads off of the other wall to the kitchen dining room but joining those two open “doorways” is an angled wall which makes my living room very oddly shaped and difficult for furniture arranging. I am always looking for tips on that. In case my description wasn’t clear the angled wall faces head on to the corner of the two walls I first described with the open entry ways on either side of it.
Another great and useful video. I inhale every word you say with so much pleasure. Thank you 😊 I hoped one of your fur babies was sponsoring today's video...maybe next time❤

One floor throughout my home makes the space feel huge, and I'm freshening up other decor to complement we the "new" look and feel. It's definitely one of the best investments I've ever made! Thank you, and cheers on over 40,000 LeChic subscribers!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it and your support is greatly appreciated!
😊😊😊
You are the only person that builds like and subscribe after content given ( in the middle) instead of “ it helps my channel” etc before we even know if I’d like the delivery or content! Keep doing it that way. A very classy way to engage viewers.
Thanks so much! I appreciate your support. We are trying to grow to being a very large channel so I can reach many people to provide educated and helpful information, not just fluff or sales.
I binged all your videos when you had 17k subscribers, and fell in love with the fact that you provide QUALITY content with a sprinkle of attitude! 😉 Within a couple days you had another subscriber!
Thanks so much Rose! I’m glad you are part of our very valued subscriber family. I appreciate your support!

That is awesome!
Great tips, Garrett! I live in an open space and I can look around now with an educated eye and see what needs adjusting. You're the best!
Thanks so very much!😁😁😁
My house is open concept and while I save to replace carpeting (it's apartment building grade beige at the moment yuck) I shop for affordable, yet beautiful, drapes that totally take the eye off the floor.
Wow, this was an amazing video. So many helpful tips. Love it.
Yay! I’m so glad you enjoyed.
😊😊😊
This is going to be so helpful for dealing with our 1br apartment that's basically open concept and just feels like a huge challenge. Also I want to request a video for choosing rug styles- although you've covered sizes in other vids I'd love to learn more about the different styles, patterns, and colors and how designers choose them.
Garrett, this video gave me the tick of approval I needed not to 'overfill' my open concept home! It just felt right as is - cool, eclectic but quite minimal - you saying let it breathe gave me the boost I needed! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching, and supporting our channel by pushing the subscribe button. :)
Garrett!! that cable knit sweater is perfection...
Thanks!
Love your personality and the approachable way you talk about design. Can't wait for more content!
Thank you so much Dianela! That's nice of you. I'm glad you are enjoying. Much more to come. New video tomorrow at 10am PST.
Thanks so much!
Thanks! Thank you for supporting the channel by hopefully pushing the subscribe button. :)
Thanks for sharing!😊☹️😊
About to build our forever home and your videos are so helpful because it’s so overwhelming.
Glad it was helpful! Please take a moment to support the channel by subscribing. I appreciate it.
Yet another useful and practical video, Garrett, and I find my respect for you vis a vis other on-line decorators increasing continually. The examples of interiors you provide are both beautiful and illustrative of the points you're making.
Thanks so much Ingrid!😀😀😀
I always like your videos and let me tell you, HONEY!!! This one is no exception. It is so informative and still so entertaining. I can’t look away!! 😀
Thanks so much! 💯 I love it when people take the time to watch my past videos which of course can be found on our channel. There is a wealth of helpful information there. I truly appreciate you supporting the channel.
😀😀😀
I never heard anyone speak of scents when it comes to design~how interesting! And I would agree about keeping one scent only throughout; it's so logical!! And you've got a new subscriber-Yay!!
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed. Welcome to the channel. It’s great to have you as a part of our very valued subscriber family!
Big Fan. This was an amazing detailed approach to open concept. I know now what to do to better accessorize and take our new home up a notch, thanks so very much!!
Awesome, thank you!
Love this! Thank you Garrett!
I love the gentleness of your snark. You are wonderful 😊 you content is original and useful
Thank you so much! Thanks for watching, and supporting the channel by pressing that subscribe button. :)
Fantastic information!! Love all of your videos!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you are enjoying. Much more to come. :)
Yes! I needed this video, thank you for your well thought out advice.
You are so welcome!😀😀😀
Thank you, Garrett! I've been struggling with putting in a light fixture in my living room space. Since I have already decided on our over island pendants in our open concept great room, I can now narrow down my choice of styles of floor lamp to those that talk the same language as kitchen lighting.
Glad it was helpful!
Subscriber for awhile but really binge watching your content right now during my post flood renovation. My house is open concept on the first floor and this is so helpful. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! I'm really sorry to hear about your flood. :)
Great video, if I ever get around to building I may share pics of my open concept space. It's open concept to maximise airflow in the tropics with the kitchen down wind so that hot air is pushed out and smells also.
Glad you enjoyed!
This was extremely helpful. I was wondering how Albert feels about mixing textures. Also, what does Cornelius think about the wallpaper trend? Thanks for the valuable and clear content! ❤️❤️
Good question!
Garrett, thank you for addressing the fresh clean smelling home, especially the part where you say, not every room needs to have a scent. There's nothing more migraine inducing than different smells mixing together. 😨
Also, as a person who was afraid of mixing metals, I feel like you've taught us the proper way to do that.
My pleasure!
🐶🐶🐶
Thank you, Garrett! This was full of helpful info I needed. My new favorite video from you 🎉🎉🎉
Awesome! Thank you!
Really loved this video. I’m moving into a brand new, just developed open concept home. I will absolutely keep in mind your advice when replacing the “generic “, fixtures like lighting etc. thanks once again!
Just had to stop and say - love that sweater on you. Gorgeous!
Thank you.
Love your direct"get to it" production!!! Love your suggestions! Glad I stumbled across your channel. I am a new and instant fan!
Yay! That's awesome. Welcome to the channel. It's great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family.
Thank you for these ideas! I have purchased my first open concept building. (An old church) lots of ideas to consider, and think about.
I like open concept. Thanks for the ideas on mixing lighting.
👍👍👍
Thank you 😊
Thanks for watching’😊😊😊
Wow! The video I needed!
When your ideas and suggestions apply to my areas, they are right on! One thing that I've done in my open space is to have two swivel chairs that are great for conversation from living area to kitchen. Thank you Garrett. (I missed seing a 🐶 on this video.)
Thanks so much!😊😊😊
I value and appreciate your videos so much! You always have such helpful advice to offer 🙂
You are so welcome!
Great video! I love your view on design and concept! Thank you for sharing your gifts of art. ☺️
Thank you so much!
I hope the video will help. I’m glad you enjoyed. 😊😊😊
The best! Fighting open concept for a long time. I guess I’m doing ok after listening to that. Need to get rid of a few chairs;)
Please I need you to do fireplaces decorations. Can I paint my fireplace? What’s the latest on a open concept fireplaces? Etc. Thanks
Lol. Just what I needed right when I needed it!
another great video, Garrett. Moving into our new place next month, so all of your insights are so helpful! Thank you!
Great to hear! Congratulations. :)
Really great video, Garrett, thank you so much for your advice and tips. I live in a small Parisian apartment rather than an open space but your ideas, like using a single scent, are still valid for me. Love from Paris xxx
Hello Georgina! Merci. Hope all is well.
😊😊😊
@@GarrettLeChic Thank you! xo
I could not find a large enough coffee table for my large living space. So I improvised and used a large round glass table but flanked it with a potted plant in a Cool pot and a basket with blankets on both sides. I get continuous complements on how beautiful it is.
Very interesting! Yes, that's a common dilemma and often the coffee table would have to be custom made.
Thanks for a very informative video, please keep them coming!
Thanks so much! 💯
Thank you Garrett, for another insightful video. Your cable knit sweater is very nice too.
You are so welcome! Thank you. :)
I recently found and subscribed to your channel, and find your advice really sensible and in line with my opinions (but much more informed/expert!). We're currently in the process of designing an open-concept house to be built at some future date, which will be our first open-concept home. The tips you provided here will be helpful when we get around to furnishing and accessorizing it - thank you! I shared the video with my husband - hopefully he'll watch. 😄
Welcome to the channel Jodi! It’s great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. We have allot of useful and fun videos already posted on the channel for you to peruse. Many of my subscribers tell me they watch them all as they can. Of course, much more to come! 😊😊😊
Great tips. Thanks, Garrett. 👍😊
My pleasure!
Another great video. 👏👏👏
Thanks!😊😊😊
The sass in the intro 😂
Great video, as always 🤍
Thank you 😁

I am a new subscriber to your channel! I love your style, plus you are an excellent teacher! Good job!
Thank you so much! Welcome to the channel. It's great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. :)
Love, love, love. your channel. Beautiful AND practical. A rare combination. I have a request. You and your husband's home is stunning (and pet-friendly, which is awesome).
Thanks so much, and thank you for sharing!
😁😁😁
In terms of your questions, I don't feel comfortable giving a specific opinion about someone's space unless I can see it, and know more about what design effect they are trying to achieve.
Fantastic ideas! I love your sweater.🤗
Thank you! 😊
Yes, more floor showing makes the space look bigger. I see so many homes with those big bulky couch's; it makes the room so small.
Another great and useful video. I inhale every word you say with so much pleasure. Thank you 😊
I hoped one of your fur babies was sponsoring today's video...maybe next time❤
Thanks so much!🐶🐶🐶
Hi Garrett, Im a new subscriber and I am loving your fun and informative videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge😊

Open concept apartment and hate it haha. 🙃 I'll give it a go after this video!
It's like a small square with kitchen on one wall, the door to come in on the other and a door to the bedroom on anouther.
Awesome! Glad it was helpful. Please support the channel, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
BALLS, I didn’t know about this video before I asked that transitioning paint question on another vid. SORRY! great example photos ty
No problem😊

Hi Garret! Love your channel 💕
Yay! Thank you!
Thank you! Great information!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Love your videos! This is so helpful as we are moving into a house with a large open space. We have mid-century modern pieces and also some post modern shaped pieces, so I think maybe the style could be called Mid-Century Post Modern! Thanks for all the work you do.
You are so welcome!
Awesome video!!
Just subscribed, your videos are so informative and fun,!! :)
Thanks so much Scarlet! Welcome to the channel. It's great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family! :)
