When I purchased my 2007 M5 V10 nearly 4 years ago I had Jason from Rebuild change my throttle actuators as they were throwing a fault code now and again , this was a great decision as touch wood no codes have ever come back , I highly recommend Jason and his mechanic Paul who changed them from pulling up ( hot engine ) in 1.5 hours to driving away , as the guy in this video states “ it’s people that purchase cheap M5’s that are knackered then thrash them to within an inch of their lives until catastrophic failure then start winging on forums “ , it’s a great future classic and what an engine but make sure it’s warmed to temperature before pedal to the metal this is the secret to longevity of this wonderful engine. 👍🇬🇧
This is great advice. The issue here in almost 2023 is that most of us considering buying these will not know if the previous owner did this or not. It could have been someone who put the petal to the floor everyday on his way to work.
Hi , I’ve only just seen this comment a year later 😂 , if I was purchasing one of these for the first time I would consider this , Full service history ( main dealer or even better a specialist) Definitely one that’s had the con rod shells changed ( most have now ) The rest of the preventative maintenance parts are not a problem ie: throttle actuators £400 to £500 for the pair fitted , injectors ( 10 of them which I purchased from autodoc for £380 and quite easy to change , I also had a leak from the oil cooler positioned under the front bumper which are quite cheap around £100 or so , basically keep on top of the servicing , warm up the car for a good 15 minutes and during pedal to the metal have cool down periods this also helps the gearbox and clutch , I’ve had the con rod shells changed at 90,000 miles , these were original ones that came out and were very warn actually copper was showing on cylinder no. 10 so I was lucky ( this cost me with the APL shells and bmw bolts fitted around £2000 which considering it’s a performance car isn’t that bad plus now I know it’s been done ( with photographed work throughout plus the vanos pipe at the same time , chain guide and engine mounts) , another thing to remember is the oil analysis I had done previously is only a guide tbf so don’t rely on these , it’s a great car to own for weekend’s not commuting , hope this helps. PS: nothing else to report about regarding problems so all good.
Great video. I just bought an '09 M6 convertible last year and love it. It has been driven ~3500-4000 miles/year and I have every service record since its first oil change, so I'm hoping I got a good one. Just replaced the throttle actuators for both banks, but otherwise, passed the mechanic's checks with flying colors. Absolutely love my car. It sounds so wonderful I hardly use my radio. 🤣

Thank you so much for this video, good sir! I appreciate the thorough explanation on the engine and its possible failure points, and the links to your in-depth videos will no doubt be just as valuable. The S85 seems like a daunting engine because I _myself_ am not mechanically educated to handle major operations, but one of my relatives has years of experience as an automotive mechanic. There should also be a dedicated BMW M center that I could contact in case I were to own an E60 M5. Everything you hear about these cars is true so do not kid yourself about maintenance costs. But even figuring in the maintenance costs it is 1/2 the price of a Viper V10, 1/3 the price of a 996 twin turbo, and 1/4 the price of a Gallardo, R8 V10 or F430 and is faster than all those cars from 60km/h to 250km/h. I have done literally every maintenance item mentioned except fuel injectors lol 130k miles and counting. I would not let it idle to warm up though, wait a minute or two at idle but then just drive it, just keep the revs under 2k until the oil is at 210F or 100C.
That's what BMW master tech advised me. I wait until the start up sequence has run and the engine idle has settled to 600rpm (about a minute) and then I drive off. In D, so the technology keeps the revs low for economy. (Sounds lame but South London is a 20 zone.) I use the shift lever when warm and if on a track the paddles are right where they should be.

Cars like these just need consistency with care and maintenance. It’s always the owners driving it hard and abusing it and they’re so shocked when it breaks down.
I love my e63 m6 got it wit 100k miles on it don’t know if they did the bearings but im planing on doing them i have owned it for about 3 months and put like 6 k miles on it already did first oil change as well oil look good no coper had to wait a month for oil so I decided to stack up on oil your going to need it with this car rods but over all very amazing car 😁😁
My S85 is burning oil heavily. I can see the intake valves of cylinders #3 and #8 covered in oil when I take off the plenum and open the throttle while other cylinders all have clean and dry valves. I replaced valve stem seals OE. The throttles are all clean and dry. So now the most likely culprit might be the valve guides. However I measured all the valve guides. They all have 5.00mm inner diameter. All the valves are within tolerance as well. What could that be?
Your intake valve stems could be ever so slightly bent due to them being stuck open at some point on cylinders #3 and #8, usually because of overreving. Have you tried replacing those valves?
Hey brother, had my m5 7yrs now, never redlined or abused it, mechanic said cylinder 1 has oil in it after i got a multiple cylinder misfire, due to old spark plugs, around how much is an engine rebuild, also is it necessary for a rebuild for cylinder 1 having oil in it ?
How frequently are we changing plugs, coils, vanos solenoids and the like? Every 50k miles? 30k? 100k? I’m genuinely asking. I currently have a e60 530 and love it to death, but an “m” car is a holy grail.
My friend is trying to sell me his 2005 m5 with this engine. It seems to run good but I have been reluctant because how expensive these engines can cost if they go. It has 90k miles on it. The main concern for me is those rod bearings. I haven't asked how much it would be to replace those things. But I can't imagine it being cheap. Us dollars
I would only debate you on those Rod bearings. You’re definitely a lot less likely to ruin them with proper car care and not revving it past 3500 until the engine is fully warmed up, but those bearings are not good either way. They’re inherently flawed bearings and they should definitely be replaced to avoid an absolute disaster
BMW are known for running their engines hotter. You can get thermostats that open at a lower temp and so the engine is kept at a lower temperature. Hotter is more efficient and better for emissions and power and... and..., but cooks plastic and rubber. I often thought I should have done it on my M62 but it was great OE.
It’s been over 5 years and nothing has ever gone wrong with the SMG 3 gearbox , my previous M3 E46 SMG 2 was a little unreliable though , it’s mainly the lemonade boys ( running a champagne car on lemonade money) that write negative stuff about these cars , great weekend car very addictive. 👍🇬🇧
I know bro I don’t know why in EU everything is so expensive to buy. To be honest everyone just takes the piss there as there not meant to be that price people are just greedy same way there trying it here, but people won’t buy it here that’s the difference as people here want it cheap and cheap Will wait for it to be cheap.
coming from experience of owning this car, even though it is an engine mostly for the mechanially inclined or someone that takes care of it, BMW is certainly still at fault for the lack of reliabilty of this engine, and yes as cars get older and older they need more care but no other car will destroy its rod bearings in as little as 40-60k miles, and i think no other car will have someone as paranoid about it breaking as this thing.
I wish I’m not allowed ! On trade rules are very different. I would just try source them from eBay if possible personally I wouldn’t trust eBay to buy them kind of things but it’s most peoples only option. If your in UK it’s easy to open one if you have the right documents or a garage ID number for a official repair garage.
I love my M cars I've owned but Jesus.. so basically what you're saying is every single part of the engine and SMG will fail prematurely. Knowing how terribly engineered this motor is I can never in good faith own an E60/63.

How frequently are we changing plugs, coils, vanos solenoids and the like? Every 50k miles? 30k? 100k? I’m genuinely asking. I currently have a e60 530 and love it to death, but an “m” car is a holy grail.
Well its settled then. Selling my E36 M3 Techno Violet for a E60 M5.
Us dollars
How long should I let it warm up I have a s65 and I’ve seen google say to let warm for 10 seconds
@@alanlopez4611 At least 2-3min
Brother doc where did you get that jacket?
What about 15W-50 red line ?
I would only debate you on those Rod bearings. You’re definitely a lot less likely to ruin them with proper car care and not revving it past 3500 until the engine is fully warmed up, but those bearings are not good either way. They’re inherently flawed bearings and they should definitely be replaced to avoid an absolute disaster
I love my e90💯💯
What do you mean about thermostat, running colder or hotter?
BMW are known for running their engines hotter. You can get thermostats that open at a lower temp and so the engine is kept at a lower temperature. Hotter is more efficient and better for emissions and power and... and..., but cooks plastic and rubber. I often thought I should have done it on my M62 but it was great OE.
Paldies par informaciju……
Isn’t it mostly the SMG that’s doomed no matter what you do?
It’s been over 5 years and nothing has ever gone wrong with the SMG 3 gearbox , my previous M3 E46 SMG 2 was a little unreliable though , it’s mainly the lemonade boys ( running a champagne car on lemonade money) that write negative stuff about these cars , great weekend car very addictive. 👍🇬🇧
4-5k, wow i wish they were that cheap in EU here it is like 10k for a smashed one :D
@@BMWDoctor because it's a socialist hell hole 🕳
coming from experience of owning this car, even though it is an engine mostly for the mechanially inclined or someone that takes care of it, BMW is certainly still at fault for the lack of reliabilty of this engine, and yes as cars get older and older they need more care but no other car will destroy its rod bearings in as little as 40-60k miles, and i think no other car will have someone as paranoid about it breaking as this thing.
Brah go buy a McLaren or a Ferrari & get back to me in such miles to lmk how it went!
Is it possible to put a n54 engine in a 128i my engine recently locked up and I need to replace it what engines would you recommend
That’s a stupid question just get a 135i with a n54 it’s cheaper
dont build what u can buy
Bro where to get the same deal of vanos solonides, like you got
Trade account !
@@BMWDoctor bro can you get it for me also
I wish I’m not allowed ! On trade rules are very different. I would just try source them from eBay if possible personally I wouldn’t trust eBay to buy them kind of things but it’s most peoples only option. If your in UK it’s easy to open one if you have the right documents or a garage ID number for a official repair garage.
U said u love porch seems like hate bmw because its slow then why keep make it? Just make a porch though
WTF am I watching this, like I'd ever buy this car :D
First
I love my M cars I've owned but Jesus.. so basically what you're saying is every single part of the engine and SMG will fail prematurely. Knowing how terribly engineered this motor is I can never in good faith own an E60/63.
