How worn are the Rod Bearings in our S85 V10 engined M6? + Fixing problems

  • Imran hasn't driven our E63 M6 project yet, and he doesn't fancy tempting fate so before he does we're going to change the Rod Bearings!
    We pull the M6's S85 V10 apart to remove the original BMW bearings and replace them with Mahle Motorsport uprated bearings + ARP bolts. This then means we can see just how badly the original bearings have worn over the 16 year and 120,000 mile life of the car.
    With the car on the lift we also fix a few of the major problems we diagnosed during our inspection, to get this car safe to use on the road.

    Dropping the subframe enough to remove the sump whilst leaving in situ is class. I dropped my subframe completely to replace the rod bearings on my m5.

    Just out of curiosity, at what mileage should you change the rod bearings? Do newer bearings wear as fast as the original equipment?

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  3 місяці тому

      We'd advise changing them by 70k miles based on the 100s we've seen over the years. We consider it a must do 'major service' that if the car hasn't had done, pretty much regardless of mileage we would carry out so that we could enjoy the car with peace of mind.
      The Mahle Motorsport bearings we would not expect to wear at the same rate as OEM - But even with the OEM part when the car is correctly warmed up, maintained and cared for they should last a very long time, far more miles that anyone will realistically now do in one of these cars.

    Having a V10 always makes sense......if you can afford to run it properly. In a world with increasingly soulless EV and Hybrid powertrains (I'm looking at you new C63 AMG) then engines and cars with character will always be special and sought after.

      They could be worn more than you think if those 34k miles were accumulated over a bunch of small distance drives, i.e. the car spending an inordinate amount of time in warm up phase. Low mileage is not always a good thing.

    • @TheSuperchargedM5Dog
      @TheSuperchargedM5Dog 3 місяці тому +1

      There is belief that a lot of the wear happens very early on in the engine's life, and then it's potentially luck of the draw afterwards.
      The chief considered reason is the 1st owners not really caring as they have a warranty.
