- The biggest problem with this tractor when I bought it several years ago, was by far the trashed steering gear box. I had started working on this issue, then took a break from this project. Now that I am back to work on this tractor, it's time to try and finish the steering repairs.

#40 plug on bottom of my 350 is actually 1 7/8". the 1 3/4" will not stay in place. its a Welch plug (flat). pressed in place with a special plug I made just slightly undersize and prying with a cheater bar over a small block of oak. dry as a bone now.
It’s a shame these steering boxes were the weak point on these tractors, I’ve got a 300U with a loader that’s been sitting around a long time due to the same issue. It was in rough shape and had no pto or hydraulics other than the power steering anyway, so it wasn’t that useful other than for the loader, but still. Pretty sure the engine is stuck from sitting now as well.
I agree. I have heard it said that loaders, or truck tires are bad for these tractors, and this one had both! Some say a loader is okay if you drive it correctly, for instance, not trying to turn the wheel while not moving, and avoiding heavy loads......but that is unlikely to always be possible. The other issue is that due to the odd design of no tie rod on the front end, an after market steering system is almost impossible. The way the front axle is positioned there is no place to route a tie rod, and there is no place to attach it.

Thank you. I doubt ill be getting another atv unless a deal falls in my lap. I currently have a Suzuki eiger 400 and a yamaha grizzly 600. After fixing the 600, it was great, then when we got the suzuki the 600 kind of was forgotten. Now after sitting for years it need help. So that will be my next atv project eventually. Right now i have the tractors and other diversions to deal with.
