My great grandfather died in this accident. He was a waiter on the train. He was born in Louisiana, ended up in California for jobs during the war. He started working for the railroad because my great grandma thought it was a safer job for him.
@@Y34RZERO ahh so sorry for your loss
@@raillashupaviation5108 It is what it is. The Hawkins side of the family is a bit unlucky it seems.
I just recently bought a replica of 4361 in HO-Scale and I was shocked when I first saw this video cause I never knew that locomotive was involved in such a tragic accident 79 years later until now. R.I.P to those that died! Great video btw!
adyson: i'm so sad
And the names of the crew and both sections of the Pacific Limited that Sunday morning were Driver William Bosworth "Bill" Ware, Fireman L.E. Campbell, Conductor V.W. Kovarik, Brakeman J.E. Barrow, and Flagman W.S. Durden on 1st 21 and 64 year old Driver James McDonald (born in Ireland on November 8th, 1880), Fireman M.E. Hardman, Conductor J.W. Welch, Brakeman D.E. Altman, and Flagman C.A. Russell on 2nd 21.
holy crap thunderbolt i didnt know you were in here also your naperville video was great thx my man
I’d like to go into a bit more detail that might have been missed in this coverage of the Bagley wreck.
For one, the 1st section didn’t have to stop for the stuck freight train at all, because the freight train managed to get itself into a siding out of the way, so the 1st section just slowed to 8 mph to pass it.
The 2nd section was able to radio back to Ogden, regarding the situation with the 1st section and the stopped freight train as they were 15 minutes behind at the track speed of 50 mph.
Ogden had time to illuminate at least two stop or restricting signals before getting near the causeway of the Great Salt Lake, problem was, the track signals were on the fireman’s side, and at the time present before the collision, the fog only made it worse.
The 2nd section’s fireman didn’t effectively communicate to the engineer the aspect of blowing by the first restricting signal, when they past the second one, the engineer had a heart attack and died while dumping the train due to being in full shock of blowing past the two signals, and was about to slam into the back end of another train. This was right before the 2nd section finally collided with the 1st.
@@bowser5678 appreciate the info
@@raillashupaviation5108You’re welcome. Also, the 2nd section being mostly mail, you literally just got hit with a black hole with how heavy they are, especially when you consider a lot of RPOs of that era had concrete poured at the bottom of those cars. Good luck stopping a whole trains worth of that.
Hey, guys you did forget the SP diner in 1st 21's consist and the 3 sleepers were 1 tourist sleeper #4293 and the other 2 were standard class sleepers named Fallon and Lake Chshman
Opps, I mean Cushman, the last word was a typing error
