Composite is the yellow plug. Component consists of Green, Blue, and Red. Component is much higher quality, Composite is lower quality but only needs a single cable. Great video!
This honestly is some of the cleanest footage ive seen that doesnt have washed out color and no interlacing! Great work! Im not sure if the quality on the new ION converter is as good to be honest.
Hey thanks man this was used with component as well and not s-video. Does the new ion converter transfer to sd card or straight to the computer?
@@brandoncameracollection Looks like it writes to SD but has an HDMI out. I havent pulled the trigger on any converters yet as im really trying to preserve the quality and frames of what im shooting
Yeah I know there are ways you can go tapeless but for that to be mobile it’s a huge contraption. If your shooting mini dv try and get Sony tapes I’ve heard they’re have the best video quality and make sure you use something better then component cables
Was watching the video for what it was about, was suprised seeing the scooters pretty great to see some homies
Haha yeah I have actually had a few scooter riders be stocked to see that I scooter
amazing video!! ty for sharing
How would you download the drivers and software for the ion video 2 pc if you do not have a cd slot in your computer?
I think you can buy external cd readers that connect through usb
With this method, It seems to me like my digital data from the mini DV tape is being transferred to analogue through the composite video output of the camera, then converted back to digital via the Elgato. Am I not losing quality this way? Is there a more direct way that will result in better quality for the final files?
Yeah the best way to get your video from mini dv is through FireWire. There a lot of ways to do it but it’s a bit of a hassle.
Is there anything (cheap) out there i can put my mini dv tapes into and connect to comp? I've got a box of tapes and no camcorder. Or is just buying a used camera the best option?
Yeah you’ll have to get a used camera. Plenty of cheap ones on eBay. As for transferring your footage here is a pretty cheap option: amzn.to/3VU30i6
OK, now I can’t see where you are inserting the mini DV tape as nateb4543 questioned?!
Hey,
Thank your for your videos, they are super helpful.
Just to be sure before I buy one of these things.
I have recorded video footages on a dv tape with a very old panasonic palm corder. It has an A/V output.
To record my footages on the sd card, I just play my dv casettes on the palmcorder and hit the record button on the Ion?
Thank you!
Yes you should see the video play on your laptop in real time
@@brandoncameracollection thank you!
@@brandoncameracollection Hey, I have bought the video 2 sd version. I have recorded my dv tape on the sd card, but it turned out superglitchy. In your other video you said that this happens. Before I send this device back, I want to make sure that I have tried everything to make this work. I am trying to connect it to my computer but my mac doesn't see it at all. I have tried connecting the Ion device with an HDMI cable but still no sign in. I have a newer Mac and wondering if that is the problem?
@csihacsiha yeah I’m not sure how ion hasn’t fixed this yet 🤦♂️ I had the same issue and a lot of other people have as well. The AV cables it comes with are defective for some reason. Cruise over to Walmart or look on Amazon for for a new AV cable and that should fix the issue
what cable would I need to get for the sony CCD-TRV308 handy cam? In order to digitize it?
You would need a 3-1 rca cable like this amzn.to/3IgnsUl
And for better quality you can use an s-video cable
Did you ever figure it out bro? I have the same camera
So i need a functioning camera that plays the Mini DV?
Well both the cameras i own seem to not want to play back the cassette, any tips on what i could do?
I’m not quite sure why your cameras aren’t playing the tapes. I’m not too knowledgeable on problem solving tape decks and all that. So you might have to get yourself a new working one.
@@brandoncameracollection Do you know where I can get a working one from?
I would look around on eBay or macari people are selling all kids of cameras on there
Do you recommend this over the clearclick 3.0 or clearclick 2.0 for quality
Well these aren’t made anymore so you would need to find one second hand somewhere. And you have to make sure it comes with the CD to download the software and drivers. So for ease of use I would go for a clearclick. They will have close to the same video quality.
hey brother, i’m having some difficulties with my device. the little TV icon in the PowerDirector application isn’t detected. i’ve installed the drivers that came on the disk but perhaps something is wrong? not quite sure what’s going on.
if you have any help that’d be sweet. thanks.
I’m not quite sure either. If you are using AV cables make sure you you go into the setting and you have the video source selected to av. Or if you are using s-videos make sure you have it selected. Make sure your camera is turned on. I’m not sure what camera you are using but if it has the stand by and lock switch make sure it’s not in the lock position. And you can always try pushing the reset button on your camera to see if that helps if it has one. Other than that you might have to mess around in the setting of the program to see if you can change anything.
I saw a video where someone was able to capture onto premiere pro. Would I be able to do that with this method?
I’m actually not sure I didn’t know you could use premier pro to capture footage. You might need to find some more information about it
Hey will this work for my sony trv318? It has a svideo slot but no rca. It shows two others that say AV out and RFU DC out
Yes so the AV out is the rca it just uses a 3-1 rca cable like this one: amzn.to/3wsG7r8
Question that I know a lot of people have. I have two broken JVC mini dv camcorders-not repairable, if I buy a Sony will it read my JVC tapes without issues? so I can firewire them into my computer?
I assume it would work fine I feel like you should be able to use any brand of mini dv tape with any camera. I’ve used Sony tapes with canon and Panasonic cameras and I’ve never had an issue.
@@brandoncameracollection Thanks. And there was no degradation in quality?
Not that’s I could tell the footage like great to me
I recently picked up one of these from my local savers, I plan on using it to capture PS2/Xbox footage using an old 2006 Mac Pro I have lying around.
Hell yeah do some classic play through games
Thank you
Hi, I got the same device but it didn't come with the dvd's I can not find the driver online. Can somone help me
Do you know if it can be imported from device to iMovie or Filmora?
No it makes the video into it’s own file and saves it into your computer. But all you gotta do is drop it into your video editor and you’d should be good to go
Good Evening,
Wow, what an interesting channel! I'm trying to convert VHS tape to .avi file and I followed your info although my set up is a bit different I followed in theory. Maybe you can tell me where I am going wrong.
I am trying to convert VHS tapes to .avi using my VCR and my Sony TRV310 Hi8 camera and Firewire. I did this successfully a while back and am attempting it again but I am forgetting some key ingredient.
My Set up:
No Hi8 tape in the camera
VCR connected via composite cables to the connections on the side of my camera.
Camera connected to PC via firewire. PC recognizes the Sony camera.
Camera switched to VTR mode (Playback)
Capturing with Adobe PPro 5.5 or DVMP Pro
Hit play on the VCR, counter begins and Play on the camera and the screen is blank. Press record on the PPro capture screen, No capture.
I have tested all components and if I play theVHS tape I can see it on the camera screen unless the firewire is connected.
I can play a Hi8 tape and capture it just fine using PPro.
I just have a nagging feeling I'm forgetting something simple?
Thoughts?
TIA.
Ok I’m a little confused. Does your vcr have a FireWire in port? Or does your computer have a FireWire in port? Try putting a tape in the camera since the camera can’t play or record anything with out a tape in it. But I do have a video on my channel on how I capture my footage with FireWire. Capturing VHS, HI8, or Mini DV Videos With A VCR/DVD Player - The Easy Way
ua-cam.com/video/G3Yju9TZAN4/v-deo.html
I found out my particular camera, Sony TRV 310, doesn't have ability to pass through analog signal and convert to digital even though it has a firewire port. Thanks for answering. @@brandoncameracollection
Do you know if this is compatible with windows 10? Or will I need something older like windows 7, XP etc?
It should work on windows 10 just make sure you have the drivers and software it came with
I purchased power direct and it still has the tv option grayed out in the capture feature. Any ideas?
When you buy this converter it has the power direct software disc and the software disc that allows your computer to recognize these old camcorders. So you might have to find that software somewhere online or find the disc to that software. This converter is unfortunately not made anymore so you’ll have to find this stuff second hand on eBay probably.
Do you know where I can find just a video player for the Hi8 and the Minidv tapes. I have the cameras but they stopped working.
I’m not sure they make players just for the tapes. You might want to just find a cheap Hi8 and mini dv camcorder to digitize the footage if that’s what you plan on doing.
@@brandoncameracollection Thanks, I've thought about that. I still have both cameras w/o the power cordes. It would be great to have something similar to a VCR with just a playback mode.
You can still find batteries and such on Amazon and other places online. Just search your camera’s model and search for a battery. So like for example search: Sony ccd-trv65 replacement battery. And you should find batteries and chargers for relatively cheap.
i use the Diamond vc500 to transfer hi8 and vhs footages to my pc
Hey, I had an identical setup except that I no longer have the DVD that came with the converter. I downloaded the drivers online and when capturing in OBS, it captures the graphical glitches. I heard I can connect directly if I use a firewire cable, but my camera does not have that. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do to fix this?
Using:
Panasonic PV-GS83 (miniDV)
Sony Handycam ??? (video8)
OBS
Ion Video 2 PC MKII
Windows 10
Yeah I don’t know much about how to transfer through FireWire I know you have to have a bunch of adapter wires and a decent software that can record it. But I use the clearclick video 2 digital 2.0 converter now to digitize my footage and the video quality looks practically the exact same. And you don’t have to hook it up to a computer it records your footage straight to a usb drive or SD card
Hi, Could you send me a link for the driver? I cannot find it anywhere...
You might have to email ion because I also looked on their website a while back and I couldn’t find them either
What can be done now that this product is no longer sold on amazon ?? =/
Check out some of these other ones I recommend. Or you can look for a used one of these on eBay.

hi! so i have a sony handycam hi 8 camcorder and i bought an ion film adapter that i plug into my computer and sony. the only issue is the adapter came with the 3 colored cords which i plugged in normally, but the sony handycam doesnt have the red yellow or white holes, so i dont know what to do now :,)
What model is your Sony? You probably have the little head phone jack that’s yellow. It’s a compact version of the rca cables. You’ll probably just need a 3-1 rca cable like this amzn.to/3GSEs2e
@@brandoncameracollection cool so i bought it and it arrived but with everything plugged in, the TV signal thing wont come up? It's not detected on my computer
Did you install the drivers for your computer to recognize there is a camera plugged in?
@@brandoncameracollection ive redownloaded it twice and it doesn't recognize it still :(
Interesting 🤔 what camera are you using?
What to do if dont have the camera but i have the cassets?
You definitely need a tape for it to work. Just like a sd card
do you need drivers for the capture card i picked one up for $5 at a garage sale with the cam corder
i am on a macbook
I think you should be able to use OBS software
@@brandoncameracollectiondo you have the drivers for windows im on my pc now

iOn Video to SD has received garbage reviews on Amazon. Got any other recommendations? Need to transfer Mini DV and Video 8 to Flash Drive. Help?
Yeah the ion video 2 sd was pretty garbage. Seems like a lot of people experience issues with the av cables it comes with. But it does depend on how much you want to pay. I’ll leave a list of recorders I recommend below.

@@brandoncameracollection Hey man, thanks for taking the time to respond and the links you provided. Appreciate people like you. Stay well
@queenegreene3926 thank you glad I could help 😊
It is not combusted, whatever is, those 3 colors call RCA component connector , or just RCA connector, the reason is RCA invent them way back, long time ago.
New subbie
how can i digitize my canon gl1 footage without going tapeless?
I created a playlist for that: How To Capture Your Video Footage
ua-cam.com/play/PLLCeXl20RsPbMMZhUAIdi5C3HPpPviZ07.html
@@brandoncameracollection i was viewing the video , but i noticed you only used the component method and i noticed the gl1 only had a s-video plug in.
@@brandoncameracollection ?
@wrld6885 the yellow 3.5mm port is the av port. You have to use a 3-1 style av cable
Could I use Vegas Pro?
To edit the videos with yes idk about digitizing
@@brandoncameracollection nah yeah you can digitize on vegas I just did it
Awesome glad it worked out for you😊
will this ION work with Windows 10 ???
Yes
is the software compatiblle to mac?
Yeah and you should be able to use OBS
Why doesnt anyone talk about Firewire PCI cards. I have no idea, Its better resolution and exactly what the sensor saw :(
I guess I don’t know what a pci card is. Is that like the Sony MRC-1?
@@brandoncameracollection It goes next to where the graphics card is in ur pc and has a firewire port so you can do dv out (from ur cameras "DV" port) to firewire for PERFECT quality translations!
Can you move your videos from pc to iPhone
That I’m not sure. I think as long as it’s an mp4 file it should work. The way that I have done it is through google drive or email. But you can always use Dropbox or even saving it to your cloud
@@brandoncameracollection Thank you for your fast reply
Of course I’m always keeping tabs 😉
I use fire wire to transfer minidv footage and digital 8 footage to my computer for more better quality
Yeah I don’t have firewire cable. Does FireWire have usb that you plug into you laptop?
@@brandoncameracollection nope but if you have a mac pro than you can use thunder bult to transfer fire wire miniDV to your computer
Or if you have a desktop then you can use a FireWire expansion card and then you have to download the legacy drivers for Windows 10 and then you can download a capeture software which you already know and yeah that's how I know to get the best quality
Yeah all I have is my laptops i just need to use s-video to get better video quality
I have a Sony CCD TRV 75 from 1998 and I used the diamond vc500 to transfer VHS hi8 footage to my computer with better quality and I use S-Video cable s to that's all and here's the footage from the diamond vc500 footage right here ua-cam.com/video/Rj6MkUa3za8/v-deo.html
For over 4 years I have never have problem buying vhs movies offline for 10 dollars and buying vhs cleaning tapes for 10 dollars and they are new off eBay and buying HiFi VCR player for 50 dollars
My Sony hi8 handyman only has a yellow a/v out and rfu dc out I have no idea how to get my footage onto a computer 😭
amzn.to/3pdcXd1
Here is a rfu dc cable that will work with your hi8 camera. This will work with any adapter that uses component plug-ins ( or yellow, red ,and white)
@@brandoncameracollection thank you sooooooo much I really appreciate you. Cheers 🤙
Of course 😊 there is a lot to this stuff so I understand it’s confusing
Just get to the point. Jesus.
Am buying vhs movies VCR belts VCR players cleaning tapes everything offline now days from my phone everything proven there not hard finding online now days
Vhs movies doesn't have to be updated at all like your video does
People like myself don't want to go back to that again what you want people to do with their vhs tapes
What do you mean? These devises are for digitizing your old tapes along with if you want to use old camcorders to make videos with
That is great problem I have with people now days they don't want people having nothing now days it's always updated this and that now days never about leaving nothing alone now days
Everything proven people like myself have damage blue ray disc movies and I have 300 vhs tapes people like myself are fixing broken vhs tapes with Scotch tape it doesn't stop playing at all
Everything is proven broken vhs tape itself is fixable with Scotch tape it starts playing again with out no problem's everything is proven online how to fix a broken vhs tape
What is the point of of doing that I have done that before and people like y'all don't know people like myself went back to VCR players cleaning tapes vhs movies everything proven people like myself are going behind people's back and buying vhs movies offline from images from ebay for 10 dollars it doesn't matter how old they are it's the playing what matters more everything proven vhs tapes don't stop playing at all it's the people who stops playing it
Vhs tapes degrade and the metal particles fall off the tape causing deterioration in quality or loss in sound.
@Toronado1986 definitely over time if you use old tapes, but you can still buy new sealed tapes which I definitely recommend. I’ve also heard when you’re storing your cameras you should take the tape out because the tape can start to deteriorate inside the camera.
People are buying more VCR players cleaning tapes vhs movies VCR belts off eBay now days everything proven am whiching every other videos online now days and talking to other people everything proven it's been done
Bla bla bla just do it please!
Does it work for Digital8 too?
Yes you can still use the s-video/av ports. It won’t look as good as using FireWire but it still will work with digital 8 and mini dv
