    If you are having issues with your PC connecting to the device, there are a few things you can try:
    1. Ensure your PC has a Thunderbolt port (not just a USB-C/charging port). Visit the support page of your computer (support.dell.com, support.lenovo.com, etc) and verify that your drivers are up to date. Sometimes the Thunderbolt driver is separate and needs to be installed manually. Also check that your BIOS is up to date. If you're getting blue screens when you plug in, this is the solution.
    2. Check the settings in your BIOS as there may be a setting in there to allow data over the Thunderbolt port. Here is an example link that shows the settings: www.dell.com/support/article/... There is also usually an app within Windows called the "Thunderbolt(TM) Software " and make sure it is set to "Always Allow" like this: www.caldigit.com/thunderbolt-...

    Amazing video!!! Finally got my firewire card installed to capture video from my old Vixia HV40 Camcorder, intending to capture using Adobe Premiere 2024, only to discover they have deleted all capturing from the program! Adobe help was no help. Searched youtube and google a lot before finding this video. Having the firewire card I was able to skip through all of those wire connections. HV Split 0.77 Beta worked great. The video was still too large at that point for Premiere Pro to do anything with. Ran it through Handbrake 1.7.3 and it compressed it way down. Now it imported and worked in Premiere Pro just fine, but there was no longer any point to that, lol. Awesome stuff!

    Hi Scott! Good news and an update on getting WinDV to work on a Dell Laptop (G7700) running Windows 11, i7 CPU. It would not work using the Gen 3 Thunderbolt port on the laptop, so I purchased the DELL Thunderbolt Docking Station model WD22TB4. I connected the Apple Dongles directly into the new Docking Station TB port, connected the TB Docking station to the TB port on the laptop and gave it a try. IT WORKED! I am now transferring mini tapes as I author this update. I hope this helps others. The laptop is running Intel generation 10 CPU. Next, I am going to see if I can get it to work on my new ASUS Z690 Motherboard desktop running Intel i7 generation 12 CPU.

    Update Scott! I decided to try an old DELL XPS i5 desktop that I upgraded the OS from Win 7 to 10. I added a firewire port expansion card and everything worked using Firewire cable from Sony 4 pin to Firewire expansion card. I successfully used the Sony DV camera and WinDv program with zero issues. Slow, very slow for a 1 hour tape, but that was to be expected using this method. I am going to try my newer win 11 Dell Laptop as soon as the TB DS arrives this Thursday, I will let you know how it works.

    Scott, I think my problem may be with something that is not showing up in the WinDV program. I have deleted the original WinDV program from downloads and did a NEW download of Peter's WinDV 1,2,3 Zip. I unzipped the program, hit OPEN, and the program screen opens. I have nothing showing in Capt.file: box, so I typed in C:\users\User\Desktop\DVCapture. BUT, I never get the second screen to pop up which says SAVE AS, so the program may not be starting without that input???? Thoughts?

    Thank you, the cable stuff I found really helpful. Any recommendations for paid-for software for those of us that are security paranoid? I was looking at Pinnacle Studio and I have an old 10.5 version, but it's unclear if this is supported in newer versions. I heard Adobe Premiere supports importing as well, but that's an arm and a leg. It's the K-Lite codecs making me nervous. Thanks again for a great video. UA-cam content creators always amaze me!

    • @ScottSchramm
      @ScottSchramm  Рік тому +1

      I don't have experience with paid video editors but I would imagine that most of them would work for editing MPEG2. Most won't support capturing video from tape though so you will still need WinDV or HDV Split for that. Just do the capture, and then you can import them into your movie editor and they should play there. You could also immediately convert them to MP4 using Handbreak or another format converter.

    • @briankneebone9543
      @briankneebone9543 Рік тому

      @@ScottSchramm yes, makes sense. It would probably be too risky to trans-code on the fly.
      All, I did the trial for Pinnacle Studio 26 (free for 15 days) and it has a nice interface to import. My camera is a Canon MiniDV device. Their specs claim "DV" and "HDV". I can't claim compatibility for other devices or the higher definition format, but I have no reason others couldn't succeed. In my case this is the way I'm going for software since it has some additional features including the ability to segment output MPEG2 clips if there's enough of a gap and the remote controls work for my camera where WinDV's didn't. Also, since I have other family members using this, I wanted something that had decent support, updates and this didn't require me to install K-LITE or other codecs which had me a bit concerned. I know not everyone has money to fling around, but this seems to work for me and gives other advanced video editing features without having to pay for Adobe Premiere. I haven't tried re-importing the MPEG2 to see how it handles MP4, but I can confirm Handbrake (recommended by the author for this video) re-encoded it nicely. If this sounds like an ad, it's not. I don't work for Pinnacle, Corel and I don't work in this space. I'm just really happy with what I tried (at least so far) and passing it along in case others are interested in a similar software.

    Hi Scott, thanks a lot for this video, it did the trick for me but I have weird recurring issue: on several of the miniDV tapes I'm transferring, the first captured video clip has no audio, even though I can clearly heard sound when it's playing on the camcorder as it is being read. If I have several different clips on the tape, all the next ones have audio and no issue, but the first one does not. I'm not sure if it happens for all the tapes, as I did not check the first few tapes I worked on. Any ideas ? By the way, I found that in WinDV, if you check the box left to the Capture button, the camcorder will automatically start when you click the button. Noe need to lauch the tape playback manually. Thanks again,

    • @ScottSchramm
      @ScottSchramm  Рік тому

      Hmm I have not heard of that issue before. The only workaround I can think of is to record a quick 5 second clip of something new at the start of the tape, and then maybe the audio will work on the original first clip since it would be now be the second clip. Of course you will loose that first few seconds as it will have overwritten the tape, but at least you have will sound for the rest of the clip

    • @ScottSchramm

      There is no way to capture it directly to MP4 because it requires transcoding and no software does that in real time. Instead you are better off capturing everything and then batch converting it all at once. If you have a lot and your PC isn’t very fast you can queue it up for overnight.

      Your laptop does have Thunderbolt 3, and your processor is Intel 6th gen with is good. My guess is the issue with permissions or your drivers. Look for the Intel Thunderbolt app and make sure the permissions are to set to allow the connection. You may also need to check in the bios. If that is all good then try uninstalling the legacy driver, reboot, and and let Windows install its own built in driver. One of those things should fix it.

      Yes if the camera has HDMI, you can get a USB capture device for that HDMI connection but it's best to capture the raw data from the tape in original quality rather then capturing the playback of the video stream. The capture card will either be capturing at a higher bitrate then the video was recording in (wasting space) or most likely a lower bitrate which will cause a reduction in quality.

My recommendation is for people to get the right equipment and do the transfer properly rather then saying "good enough" with other solutions. Thunderbolt has been very common on business-grade laptops since 2016 and is becoming more popular on even consumer grade systems over the last few years. SuperSpeed refers to USB 3.0 which is not the same as Thunderbolt. The icon you are referencing may be to indicate that the port offers power/charging to other devices. The only other way to confirm is to look in your Device Manager and see if a Thunderbolt controller is listed. If you don't see anything in there that says Thunderbolt, then you don't have Thunderbolt and this process won't work.

    This video is my call to give up on getting any of my camcorder recordings onto a laptop. I've got a list of reasons as well.
    1. I have a Panasonic NV-GS27, which can only have stuff transfered via thunderbolt, and despite having 3 laptops (2 older ones and one new one.) None of them have thunderbolt plug-ins. Any decently working laptop, used or not with the plug-ins I need, already costs over 100€.
    2. All the cables and adapters needed are extremely expensive combined. Even if I would buy cheaper ones. Which ads another few hundred bucks.
    Heck, I'm a student with no time for an after-school job or anything. And even if I were to save my money, it would take forever. All I wanted to do was to just transfer those few minutes of old recordings onto my laptop, but no. I can't do that.
    I just don't wanna lose them or anything, sure; they're on a tape, but I just wanna look at them from a bigger screen, and have them saved on another device. There's recordings on there from when I was only 1 year old, recordings from family gatherings, and recordings with me and my mom. They're sacred memories, that'll be stuck on a tape forever, until one day, many years down the line I might eventually get what I need.
    At least I can still view those videos from the camcorder itself.

    The Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter has been discontinued. They are currently selling for $70+ on eBay. I guess I'll have to go the AV route.

      @@ScottSchramm Thanks Scott. Digging out my miniDV equipment to do some editing now that I'm retired. I have a Dell Precision 5470, 12th Gen. Core I7-12800H... same problem as as all the 12th gen folks. Seems like it was so much easier with a Matrox controller, SCSI drives (which never dropped frames BTW), and Premiere Pro (multiple earlier generations). Relieved that others experiencing this problem; thought I was losing my touch.

      @@ScottSchramm Hi great video. Bought an expensive video editing pc fitted with a Lycom PE-107. 400/800 firewire card that does not work so far.
      So also same question as policeman0077 RE: known issue with 12th gen. I also have a 12th gen i7-12700k.
      Even if I chuck out the new firewire card what Thunderbolt 4 and cables do I actually need using a Canon HDV 40
      and Sony Hi-8 camcorders with DV ports to USB-C thunderbolt connection do I need.. Its odd my USB-C wont work as faster than firewire 400 even 800 but seems to point at lack of support from windows 11. I have two firewire cables 400 and 800- but I also read reports dont use the 800.
      I am also told my editing sofware pinnacle ultimate also does not support the import of AVI FILES. Triple whammy. so need to purchase more software that still allows AVI import. Ok I see HDV SPLIT and win dv mentioned will try that but is academic if win 11 has issues that are not resolved.
      So in having spent so much is it possible to confirm exactly what I now need given the above and assuming the known problem with 12th gen is going to be fixed. Also many are reporting the WIN11 update 22/H wont install as in my case and I only mention this in case this update is essential to importing AVI or the intel 12th gen issue The failed 22H2 update simply states try again but after three attempts microsoft takes it off the table and is not displayed again on the updates. Some on the web state you have to wait till 22/H appears again in the future..
      Really appreciate any help in the above as this is the best video ive looked at.
      UPDATE Ive been told the firewire card could be stopping the 22h2 update. will uninstrall and try again as the update suddendly has become available again after a couple of weeks.

      @@gpop9878 Hmm, I am surprised to hear that your PCIe FireWire card did not work. I thought they may have still worked since connecting it through Thunderbolt is definitely not working with 12gen Intel processors. I would not recommend buying the cables and adapters in my video description (right below the video player you will need to click on "show more" to expand it) because that method is proven not to work a this point and it's unclear if there will be any kind of fix or update to bring back that support since this seems to be a limitation by Intel. As for a path forward on your system, I would suggest looking into what processors your motherboard supports and seeing if you can buy an 11th gen processor and using that as I haven't heard of any compatibility issues on 11th gen and older. As far as your Windows 11 update issues, I am not sure, I have not had that issue. You may need to reinstall the OS which would not be a bad idea if you do change out your processor. Good luck!

      My 15+ year old desktop computer (2.8ghz quad core AMD Phenom II CPU) that I built has firewire port built onto the motherboard I noticed today (as well as another desktop I built same year but different motherboard manufacturer - Asrock and Gigabyte). Been so long, I couldn't remember if firewire port was only on my pinnacle A/V board (which stopped working is my recollection, so I removed it eons ago). Much rather use my new laptop (and not be reliant on my old PC) but I think I'll use the old PC....could buy a desktop and a firewire card if I really needed the capability in future.

      The USB FireWire adapters you are referencing DO NOT WORK but you are welcome to waste your time and money on them if you wish. Also, since these tapes are a linear format and not a digital "file", you need to play and capture the tape in real time. There is no way around that.

    Hi ! Wonderful video!!! I have a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV camera, it fortunately has a direct USB output I believe, but I was wondering if the process would be any different with this cable? I will try to replicate everything in the video anyway, but it would be of great help if you had any idea on how to transfer the footage from a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV miniDV tape into my computer. Cheers!

      The USB port is for photo transfer and does not work for video. You'll need to follow the process show in this video (or any of my other recent videos) to use Thunderbolt or FireWire to capture the video. The process is not any different for your camcorder.
