  • The topic of God's judgment makes some people squirm. Believing that God is loving, gracious, merciful and kind often comes easier than viewing Him as Judge. As we investigate the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah we'll come to terms with the necessity of His judgment. We'll also be reminded that God is in the business of redemption, and that He dealt with the sin of those who believe at the cross of Calvary.
This teaching is from our series Genesis - 2009 with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Church.

I have often thought of how Lot's wife disobedience still came after such a clear stern warning not to look back. The Bible doesn't give much history of Lot's wife but it's possible she lived, and was even born, in Sodom. If so, she probably had ties in the city such as long time friends, and even her own family lived there. Then it would be a hard challenge not to look back, even for any of us. Regardless, it was clear disobedience. And, she paid dearly for it.

Skip I like your teaching and I listen often. However, I would like to challenge you on something you said often in this message and I have heard others say. You said that God saved Lot first because of the prayers of Abraham. But you also said secondly because he was righteous compared to those around him. I of course agree with you that the prayers that God prompted Abraham to pray saved Lot. God's plan was to save Lot. But it is wrong to say that Lot was righteous because he was righteous in comparison to those of Sodom. God doesn't "grade on the curve" when it comes to righteous. Lot is righteous only because he believed. Our righteousness only comes because we believe and trust God. For sure Lot was not smart, and did not live a righteous life in Sodom. But his righteousness is not in comparison to Sodom. Sorry I am rambling.

I have 1 question. If God is the creator of ALL things, why are people BORN gay then condemned by the church ? For most it is NOT a choice it is how they were designed. I have a gay brother and a transgender child. I use to think that it was wrong until I started asking questions about how they felt and thought as children. Then I understood. My daughter tells me that as a child she knew she was different. She says that she noticed that she liked more girly things as a child but felt that she could not express herself. How the HECK is a child going to choose these things if they are still innocent and don't know about being gay?

One's own belief does not create reality. Even if that was the case at birth, so is the sinful nature we have all inherited from Adam. When I was a child, I was innocent until I could understand right from wrong, but I was still born with a bent toward sin that we all inherit.

@@WisdomOnWheels well that's a very ignorant answer. There is no right or wrong it's how your born. There are other rules in the old testament that christians do not follow and don't call it a sin. The stuff about men sleeping with men is in the old testament.

Jose, please read Romans 1 and check where it is located in your Bible. Then come back here and apologize to Steve. After that continue reading the whole Bible, it will change your life for the better. God bless you brother.

@@sdlinton53 you will never know until you raise a child that is transgender. God loves EVERYONE. Should I shame my child to "be right with God"? Never!!

After doing lots of research about this topic from a wide variety of angles, the answer isn't as clear as a lot of people make it out to be. I think a lot of the Christian hatred of homosexuality is conditioned. When we read the Bible, we have to consider both the original language that was used AND the original culture.
In the NT days, homosexuality was rampant. Watch any documentary or read any book about the ancient Romans and Greeks and it's evident. Child abuse was also rampant; grown men posing as "mentors" would seduce young boys into sleeping with them, and this was just a known thing. People knew it happened. MANY people were appalled by it (and rightly so!) but there was also a significant group of people who just accepted it. It's just how it was.
In at least a couple of the verses that outright condemn homosexuality - the ones that people often point to - the text could also be translated in a way that condemns men lying with BOYS. Note that I'm saying COULD, here. I'm not a Greek scholar and I know nothing with any certainty, but I do know what I've spent the last year or so studying.
Here's the way I see it, folks. I also have a transgender child. I am also Christian. I refused to come to Christianity for many years because I couldn't fathom believing in a God who viewed my innocent teenage child as some sort of gross injustice just for existing. I've taken the time to thoroughly study what has been said in Biblical text, and I've also opened my eyes and looked around at the Christian church. I believe what the Word of God says over any pastor or any man or woman. Period. As we all should.
God loves us all, y'all. He loves us whether we are transgender, gay, queer, straight, bi... doesn't matter. None of us are without sin, and every single person reading this right now CONTINUALLY lives in sin. We commit sin every day. When we are judged, God won't look at us and ask us about someone else's sin. We won't be held accountable for what the guy next door or the queer guy who keeps coming to church did. He's gonna hold us accountable for ourselves.
That's what we all need to remember.

You should send this to Jordan Peterson for some re-education and have him retract his lecture.
