    Hollow grinds are for Buck 110's Schrade really needs to get the concept of flat and saber grinds.

    Looks like Schrade is back. The label budget blade doesn't necessarily mean its garbage. I ordered the Bolo Machete based on your review. I have been off and on following you for years. These are the types of reviews that made me a fan of yours in the first place. 101... back to basics. I still have my BK 21, 9, 7 and 2. They sill do what the always did. I have used the 9 for hours and hours with no issues. I have the original sheath and handles, and I have no complaints. Keep doing stuff like this and I will be a steady watcher again. I can't afford to support channels, but I can like, share, comment subscribe and recommend. Loved the review.

    It's a decent budget bowie. WouIdn't trust my life with it. But it's great for a weekend warrior. Personally, I live by my Cold Steel 1917 and Condor Plan A bowies.

      Is 8cr not good enough steel to trust your life with? Are we sure that’s realistic outlook??

    • @r3ptile584
      @r3ptile584 7 місяців тому

      @@blood_rayven3253 It's a great steel. But it does fail in tasks I've needed for survival. 8cr is too brittle to pry large rocks from mud. It loses it's edge when digging for edible roots, snapping turtles, and crawfish. It snaps when hammering off shale for a cooking surface. It rolls when batoning wire for snares.... I've never had those issues with my 1917 or Plan A. And I never will with any of my TOPS 1095 blades.

    This shows a lot of character you being willing to give Schrade another chance. The Taylor Brand Schrades started out pretty crappy but then eventually started producing great, budget blades. Then BTI happened and, well, we know what happened. It wasn't just one mistake, either. The SCHF (Schrade Frontier) line was mostly really good. They had traditional, high carbon steels (1095, etc.) and saber grinds. Then BTI made them all stainless and hollow ground. Now I don't even think they still make most of them.
    If you keep giving them another chance maybe I will pick one up, eventually. I bought a couple of small (neck knife size) Schrades on clearance at Tractor Supply recently and they aren't bad but small knives and big choppes are entirely different animals. I haven't ever really given up on the Sharpfinger, even the newer ones, and keep meaning to get ahold of one of the high carbon, made in U.S.A. versions they are doing, now.

    I know this isn't exactly on the subject, but Swiss Tech is making knives for Wal-Mart that are manufactured in China out of AUS 8 steel, and it seems to be pretty solid thus far. China is getting better with the heat treats, but on most budget blades they wanna put a Hollow Grind on everything. With that said, Swiss Tech has better quality control then Schrade does, so results could vary.

  • @iruwild
    @iruwild 10 місяців тому

    I like the cold steel trailmaster design more. Thick blade with flat grind and edge is convex. Doesn't stick into wood as much. I bought a few Mtech 151 which I modified the flat grind with the very steep secondary bevel which is crisp for cutting, and smooth it out with 4x36 belt sander and diamond stone into convex edge and cuts just like the trailmaster. I guess the leroy has a lot of meat and the hollow grind is just front portion of the edge. Hmm, if you change that geometry into like trailmaster..I'd bet it cuts better into wood. Amazon has Leroy again on sale for 30 bucks. I might just buy another one just to see if I can change the geometry on it to chop better.

    I cant get past the several times I have seen aus8 fail in larger blades. I would not feel safe chopping with it. I would have preferred a small flat stone set in the back side of the sheath to a pull through. but I guess if there are no other options, you use what you can get.

      I have four, the SCFS13 for when I need something just a little bigger but not too big; SCHF13sm, I have four of these they're perfect little around the house pocket knives, my wife keeps stealing them, until that one goes dull then it shows back up and another one goes missing; SCHF16, two of these, one I carry in my pocket every day and the other one in my carry bag as a back up; SCHF10 in a sheath I made for it for camping. I also have one of their little axes (can't recall the name/number of it), it's a little beast perfect for yard work, and the kukri machete which once I reprofiled the edge of has been an awesome little bush chopper. They're "budget" so I don't have to worry about them, I use and abuse them all day and they do their jobs very well. I've had all of them for years and never had a single problem with any of them, other than the original edge profile of the machete which was easy to fix.
