Thanks Diesel Master. Great explanation. I'm a diesel enthusiast. Trying to learn as much as I can to be able to take care of my two Dodge Cummins. Thanks.
You're absolutely correct and spot on. The Pistons are Shit. The ring groove location changed higher towards the crown, bad idea. The cylinder pressure is harder on it at the crown and they crack, quickly, even stock. A final 2 micron filter is a must. Changing to the 03-04 pistons and Nozzle, will make it last like it should. Polydyne coating also helps. A tuner, is Fun, but is the fastest way to kill this engine if you don't take the preventive measures First. A coolant Bypass kit is available and feeds a line to #6 directly from the thermostat housing, with a new housing that has a port. #6 has an npt plug, and is very easy to install. Donaldson Filters for Oil and Air Especially are good, or Baldwin. Don't use Auto store junk. Use heavy equipment rated brands. Highly Recommended. These are great engines if set up in this manner. You are spot on in your explanation. If you want a long life truck, it's very possible. If you want to kill it, put a tuner on it, a strait brim hat, and square toe boots, and have at it. 👌🤙
They are actually very very sensitive engines. I have blown through many 5.9 common rails ...all it takes is one bad fuel stop or one very minor injector hiccup .
Thank you Joshawa- Great video and you do a thorough job explaining the problems. I have a 2001 with 256K on it and I noticed the excess blow by a couple months ago- sounds like I’m late responding to the cracked rings. One thing my engine does, and I wonder if you’ve seen this before, when I turn off the engine it gives this odd kind of squeak or maybe a whistle kind of sound. Friends would tell me it’s a good tight engine, but maybe that has something to do with why I’m getting the extreme blow by and why I probably have cracked rings ? I saw your video on dribbling injectors; could a dribbling injector maybe cause a reverse rotation when you shut it down ?
Hey thanks for the video Josh. Do you think there’s any possibility blowby could be caused by something other then cylinder issues? Maybe something to do with valve seating or a headgasket blowout into the oils ducts? I have no metal, fuel or antifreeze in my oil and my radiator is bright green. Just hoping for a hail mary that maybe the bottom end isn’t blown.
You say that's what you get on a little blowby. I have a shit ton of it. I did have problems with that #6 injector a little over two years back and changed it out (not the tube). Now I'm losing oil out the blowby like crazy. Engine isn't running hot. Doesn't sound horrible. But I am losing quite a bit if I drive faster than 70pmh.
When the sun angle is low and hits just right I can see some steam coming out of the oil overflow tube or crankcase tube that hangs down side of the motor. Some steam or puffs out oil cap, but no pressure. 130k miles. Send in for compression check?
Usually if you catch a busted ring quick you can hone the engine out re-ring install new bearing gaskets and it will run as good as new. Not so much if you ignore it.
How do you test injectors, do they need to be removed and bench tested? At what milage would you expect them to fail on a 2007? would switching to a different style of injector help save an 07? Thank you great video!
Yep my Stock Injectors failed about 180k on my 03 and that was from the previous owner they had injectors put in and didn’t do the connecting tubes right and they leaked diesel in the oil valley so I changed the oil got new injectors and it has no blow by doesn’t burn oil it’s great it has 285k on it but the auto trans sucks
5150TheBOB I believe the 03s has a slightly different bowl design on piston. Don’t quote me tho. But even if so I’m sure it’ll still run but prob not be as efficient and or haze at idle and be more smoky. They’d go in for sure as long as it’s a 5.9. Your just have to use 03 injectors
I have a 2006 5.9 and the problem I'm having is when I'm towing a heavy load and the engine has to run high RPMs for an extended period of time it spews a little oil out of the blow by hose. Not a lot but enough to make a mess underneath the truck. I have tried the test of unscrewing the oil cap and placing it upside over the hole with the truck running and there doesn't appear to be any pressure at idle to blow the cap around. Any ideas? Could this be a result of bad turbo seals? Any info would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks.
Sorry that I never check on here for questions but for anyone else that has this problem most likely it would be the oil separator needing to be replaced if you have no blow by
I have a 2007 with the problem due to a bad injector do you know what's the cost to rebuild the engine? Also can I use my same injectors just change them they only like 3000 miles
If an injector has high return flow on start up is there any damage you can cause the engine? For instance over fueling or any piston damage if a guy can only afford a couple at a time?
J Hetherington thanks thats great reassurance what about if it stumbles on start up would that hurt the injectors i have replaced i figure they should be ok cause they are full of fuel just the computer getting confused cuase it sees pressure momentarily. Thanks for the info!! Great videos!!
A little bit of blow by on a Cummins is not a big problem. Actually normal, not a lot no doubt. Not sure where you got you should have 0 blow by on a open crank case motor but ok.
I've owned a lot of these motors and have a truck right now with a hundred and sixty thousand miles on it 0 Blow by. I've seen Blow by start with one broken ring being minor up to a couple cylinders with broken rings where the engine will not hold oil
@@absolutetow weird, everyone i have ever seen with at least 175k miles have blow by. Not a ton but some, my 05 5.9 has blow by but also has 271k miles. With get a overhaul one day
Blowby is excess compression escaping past the rings and cylinder walls. Most of the time on these engines, it's broken rings or a scored cylinder wall due to overheating. Way to test for blowby is get the engine up to operating temperature and then remove the oil cap. A tiny bit of steam is normal. However, if you see loads of steam pulsating out of the oil fill hole, then you've got compression loss due to worn/broken rings, excess cylinder wear, etc.
APR928 180-200 degrees f. Some trucks you’ll see no visible blow by some you’ll see steam coming out. If there’s no pressure and doesn’t blow oil you’re fine.

The oil separator is the black box on top of the valve cover

Blow by you can see by taking off the oil cap while the engine is running and seeing if smoke is coming out of there
Do you recommend replacing my injectors at the dodge dealership? I have 07 5.9
Eeeeeew, aluminum pistons, shun the aluminum piston! Steel pistons are better!
Steel crown aluminum skirt if I remember right
