Shawn and Mel, Michael McDonald and Jeff Baxter (guitarist sitting down with long blonde hair and big mustache) came from Steely Dan. Jeff first and Jeff recommended Michael when the Doobie Brothers lead singer Tom was too ill to perform. Michael took over for a bit then when Tom came back, Michael stayed in the band.
When Mel told Shawn 'BABY, BABY, BABY...STOP!!! Is that Michael McDonald?' Singers recognize singers, cuz vocal styles are just like fingerprints...they give you away. I love it!!!
Blue-Eyed Soul at it's finest. And it is INSANELY hard to play an instrument (especially the keyboards) and sing the way he can. McDonald is beyond talented.
Yes that is Micheal MacDonald! You aced it Mel. He was lead singer of the Doobie Brothers before going on to have his own musical career on his own. He does have that one of a kind voice. You will also hear him doing background vocals on some of his friends albums, like Kenny Loggins. It will stop you in your tracks. I love this song! :)
The Doobie Brothers are a great American rock band that have been around for 5 decades. They covered many genres of music over the years. They had so many great songs such as "What A Fool Believes", "Listen To The Music", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove", "Black Water", "Takin' It To The Streets", "The Doctor", "It Keeps You Runnin'", "Echoes Of Love", "You Belong To Me", "Take Me In Your Arms" etc.
I saw a tv special one time that got all the people they could that had been in the Doobies together at one time. They had about fifty people in the picture. It truly seems like everybody has been in the Doobies, or as my son put it “They are like Sesame Street, you know you’re a success when you are on a show.” Must be fun to be a member.
They're a great band with and without Micheal McDonald. Check out "Taking it to the Streets" with Micheal and then one my favorites "Black Water" without him
That man has made many a heart flutter over the years (mine included). His hair's white now but those eyes are still blue & that voice still can give you goosebumps.💙☮💙
“You Keep Me Running”, “Taking it to the Streets” and “Minute by Minute” are some more of their songs you might appreciate with Micheal MacDonald singing lead.
Listening to the Doobie Brothers is like listening to TWO great bands. They had a great diversity of styles musically with a delta flair then Michael McDonald turned them into a funky, blue-eyed soul group as well.
LOVE The Doobie Brothers!! They had so many hits! Their earlier stuff was with another great lead singer named Tom Johnston from 1970-75(he retired in 1977) and Michael McDonald joined in 1975 as a keyboardist and second vocalist to give Tom a break because he was suffering from health problems at the time.Michael brought the Soul into the Doobie Brothers..before like with Black Water,China Grove and Long Train Runnin' are all fantastic songs with Tom it was just a bit of a different sound leaning more mainstream rock with folk, country and R&B..Please explore it all..You will both love these songs I guarantee it :) Keep On Rockin'
Michael's voice really can only be fully appreciated in a live performance. I saw him live perhaps 10 years ago. I have been to many, many live shows in my life, but as soon as I heard his voice live I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I think I stopped breathing for a few seconds.
More Doobie Brothers, please. Michael McDonald one of a kind. There is a Great duet with Michael and Patty Labelle... Song ( On My Own) 2 powerful voices together. WOW
I LOVE that you recognized Michael McDonald immediately! That's amazing!! But what a fool believes It seems No wise man has the power To reason away What seems To be Is always better than nothing
Michael McDonald joined the Doobie Brothers- and also sings on a TON of songs-- if you listen to yacht rock station on Sirius XM you will hear his voice in every third song they play 🥰.
Everyone covered all the facts wonderfully in these comments,! here is a little aside, The cool guitar player with the shades is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. He was the inspiration for the "Muppets" guitar player puppet. He was also a defense consultant and chaired a Congressional Advisory Board on missile defense!
Thanks for this info! I love reading comments that give me factoids that I never knew. The guitar player immediately caught my attention and I can visualize the connection to the muppets. Great trivia!
That is absolutely Michael McDonald - one of the most distinctive voices in music. One of my very favorite Michael songs is Sweet Freedom. You'll LOVE it.
This song was in constant rotation in the roller rink back in 1979/1980! Along with the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Blondie & ABBA! What great times those were!!!
I met some of the band members back in 1978 when they performed at Washington State Univ. I was on the student committee that put on the concert so we were back stage. The openers were Pablo Cruise. Epic band, they are one of my top five bands. I recommend watching the video of "Taking it to the Streets" in Santa Barbara 1982.
The lead singer on this song is Michael McDonald. I'm sure you have heard him on either his solo stuff, back ground vocals on someone else's song or from another Doobie Brothers song. There are 3 lead singers in this band. Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons and Michael McDonald. Pat Simmons in this video is the one with really long hair wearing white pants.
Give that lady a ⭐!! Way to go Mel!! 👏🏽 Michael had a great career both with Doobie Brothers, Steeley Dan and solo. So thankful it worked out that way. His voice, easy on the eye, great tunes!! More please!! 👍🏽😁
You guys gotta do The Doobie Brothers with "It Keeps You Running", also the live-version and "Takin' It To The Streets", the 1982 live-version (in Santa Barbara)...You'll be blown away by the musicianship and voice of Michael McDonald on those two songs, so much SOUL! 😎❤
Such a classic song - an upbeat groove juxtaposed against a sad commentary on the nature of this "relationship." And some of the best lyrics ever. "Trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created" is such a great line that says it all.
Three of my favorite songs are South City Mid Night Lady, Another Park Another Sunday and Black Water. Saw them in 2019 and then are just as great now as they were in the 70's. I can't wait to see them again. Keep listening to their songs you will not be disappointed. Great reaction.
My first concert 1976, Doobie Brothers at The PIT, MacArthur Court, Eugene Oregon, first song was China Grove. Have now seen them 6 times and still just live their sound all of the quality individuals Bumpus, Johnston and then McDonald, Simmons and the list is way too long like 20 plus guys, they always kept the amazing harmonies and a huge salute to all the Vets in the band, thanks for serving and the going above and beyond also entertaining us for soooo long, 😊.
Now Michael is someone I would love to see in concert ..and that cool BAND ..I am in Love with the show and the talent ..so magical mystical and God given that voice !
Mel is absolutely correct! That is MICHAEL MACDONALD! There is no mistaking his voice! He was the lead singer of the Doobie Brothers for years before setting out on his own. Great reaction video you two!
It IS! Michaels Voice is quite distinctive- He be became ^known when singing with the Doobie Brothers! Sensuous with incredible range, THIS song was popular in many different musical genres.
You mean on my own! YES! Amazing voice recall. Michael McDonald was everywhere on the radio in the 70s and 80s!!! He has always been my favorite! He perfomed with Steeley Dan, Jeffrey Osbourne, Toni Braxton, the Doobie Brothers, OMG I LOVE YOU GUYS! Subscribing! He's the human Siberian Husky of Soul. I love him!
So happy you are appreciating music that I loved then and now, this Doobie Brothers song got a lot of play on the radio in the early 70’s. Y’all make me so happy, love you.
The Doobie Brothers, before and after Michael Mcdonald, are a great American band with so many epic songs. I'll be here for your Doobie Brothers journey into the rabbit hole 🕳! A couple of my favorites include: -Black Water -Another Park, Another Sunday -Long Train Running
Dig this, I heard this song decades ago, dozens of times, and never read the lyrics, I always thought it said “The wise man has the power, to reason away”. But, it says, “NO Wise man has the power, to reason away”. This makes it's meaning even deeper, showing what a 'Fool See's'. (Been there, done that). A fool see's what he wants 'to see'.
No one who hears Michael's unique gift is other than blown away. He truly is a unique gift to popular music. His appeal is seemingly universal. If I may, next up should be "It Keeps You Running" from the same night. Another perfect song and performance.
Yes, that’s Michael McDonald who sang the duel with Pattie LaBelle. The Doobie Brothers went to San Jose State University. Before they became a big popular band, they used to give free concerts at one of the downtown parks in San Jose. Seen them in concert so many times! Everybody around the Bay Area of San Jose know of the Doobie Brothers. Great band. Another great song is Listen to the Music
I’m so happy you reacted and loved this song! It’s one of my favourites. Definitely add it to your playlist - The Doobie Brothers are INCREDIBLE live but I believe this song can be appreciated even more when you listen to the studio/album version with a pair of headphones of on loud. ❤️
Michael McDonald became lead singer from 1975 after Tom Johnston, became ill. Michael's voice is so original and so recognisable. He's sung with the best like Steely Dan, Patti Labelle, Kenny Loggins, etc. Plus a superb solo career, "I keep forgetting"
What's amazing at the end you hear the harmony as michael does the fills but if you listen and michael isn't their in the middle you can hear he's missing. It shows that he holds the main glue when they hit the chorus. His voice was unreal man.
Here to love the Doobie brothers Michael McDonald ❤️. My favorite singer all time. Or. You belong to me so many great songs. Love your channel keep on rocking
Thank you for allowing us to re-experience all this great music. We (hate to say) were so lucky to have lived through all of this. The Doobies were from the Bay Area (San Jose area) so for us Bay people they were homegrown (like Tower of Power, Santana, Grateful Dead, etc). Saw them so many times. Too much to type.
I’m sure you’ve already listened, but “I keep forgetting “ is another that will take you there. You feel it. Feel it. Micheal McDonald is a force. Love that you love that. Seeing your reaction does remind us out here what it was like when we first heard songs like this in the 70s n 80s.
Check out a song with Michael McDonald with James Ingram: "Yah Mo Be There"; awesome! Michael has performed with literally every band in the rock world, either singing lead or back-up. I saw him perform with Toto and also Christopher Cross (he does back-up on "Ride With The Wind"). Michael is a treasure.
Thats him…Great ear! The guitar player sitting with glasses and huge mustache is Jeff “Skunk” Baxter who also played with Steely Dan whose song “Peg” features Michael McDonalds high voice sing PEEEEEEEEG! You can’t unhear it. Also I saw this line up of the Doobies on this tour with Ambrosia!!!Keep on Rockin’
Yes, it is Michael McDonald, he was solo for a while, he sang with Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, and others. He also wrote songs with Kenny Loggins - talented guy.
Michael McDonald voice is one of a kind. 5 seconds in and you were all over that. Great ear! Saw them live in Tampa last month. He still sounded amazing. Search Doobie Brothers live concerts from this summer. They are all in the their 70's and sound amazing

That was awesome!! Kudos to Mel! Recognized my dude, Michael McDonald, instantly!!
Blue-Eyed Soul at it's finest. And it is INSANELY hard to play an instrument (especially the keyboards) and sing the way he can. McDonald is beyond talented.

Yes, they're terrific: hitting those high notes right along with him on the choruses.
The Doobie hallmark: great harmonies.
Yes that is Micheal MacDonald! You aced it Mel. He was lead singer of the Doobie Brothers before going on to have his own musical career on his own. He does have that one of a kind voice.
