Steppenwolf was a Canadian-American rock band from 1968 to 1972. Their biggest hits were "Born To Be Wild", "Magic Carpet Ride" & "Rock Me" but other songs are "Straight Shootin’ Woman", "Hey Lawdy Mama", "Who Needs Ya", "Move Over", "Monster" etc. Both of their songs "Born To Be Wild" & "The Pusher" were used prominently in the 1969 cult film "Easy Rider".
@@robertkeown2406 I was just going to say "But what about MONSTER?". That was one of the most prescient tunes of the generation, and it's even more appropriate now.
This was my song.I was 14 and ready for a change in my music. This one did it."Magic Carpet Ride." by what Ed Sullivan called the long haired rock and rollers Steppenwolf.John Kay was the coolest cat with those sunglasses. Didn't know at the time he was visually impaired. To me he was just Cool. A little "Crystal Blue Persuasion" and "Magic Carpet Ride" was a musical high.Still to this day.
First time I heard this in 68 I knew it would be a huge hit, it sure was. Born to be Wild was their first hit. Really dug this psychedelic sound of the late 60s You keep me Hanging On by Vanilla Fudge is incredible! Really far out! Ahahaha 😀
This is Psychedelic Rock from back in the day when we were all Turning on - Tuning in and Dropping out. LSD was BIG and was everywhere. Personally, I was too afraid to try it because when I got buzzed, I liked the Earth to remain the Earth and didn't want to see what my friends told me that they were seeing. I figured that there was too much lumber in my head that could turn on me and cause a "bad trip". However, the music was great! Try listening to The Chambers Brothers "Time Has Come Today" or The Strawberry Alarm Clock "Incense and Peppermints".
Right??? I didn't have the nerve to do acid either cuz I know I couldn't have handled it. It sounded pretty cool from my brother though when he'd talk about having conversations with little people - like 3" high lol Funny how drugs were so much a part of excellent music
Time has come today is a true classic....my experiences led me to the Moody Blues and i never was able to figure how i could be here and there at the same time...incense and peppermint best with eyes closed.
I saw them in 1999 or it could have been 2000 in Tucson AZ and John Kay could still belt out those songs and I took my teenage son and his friend and they hated them
After the psychedelic intro, this song just grabs you in about 5 seconds, the groove is so good and John Kay's unique voice is amazing. Watching first time listeners, we're like "and they're going to have happy faces in 3 - 2 - 1..."
I saw this group in a small town bar in 1984 in Albany, Ga. Got a front row seat and had a wonderful night. By accident I was even there, I was passing through and saw the name on the bill board and just popped in. Crazy
The Psychedelic Rock Era. Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild, The Pusher The Guess Who - American Woman, These Eyes, No Sugar Tonight Grand Funk Railroad - We're An American Band, The Loco-Motion, I'm your Captain
Strawberry alarm clock- incense and peppermints Bubble puppy- hot smoke n sassafrass Tommy james- crimson and clover St john green- canyon woman Dave allen and arrows- blue's theme
Truly one of the great bands of all time. Everybody fives lack Sabbath the 1st heavy metal band but personally I think Steppenwolf was the 1st heavy Metal band. Their sound was much harder and heavier than the rest in those days. One of my fav. bands. The singer always wore those sunglasses because he had issues with his eyes. One of the most unique and recognizable voices around.
I saw these guys in the early 70's. Amazing band to hear live. Definitely influenced by psychedelic rock. 😎 Gotts do "Born to Be Wild." Rock On 🤘 Peace ✌
The song is about the feeling you got when you heard this song! John Kaye, the lead singer, wrote it about listening to music with amplifiers, and spacing out on the feeling. "On a cloud of sound I drifted tonight" is one of the lyrics.
I saw them back in the early 70's, they were the first band before Black Sabbath, and I liked them better, this was in Orlando Florida. Thanks for the memories.
They're, in my opinion, the best group to ever come out of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. While in LA (1967), they recruited 2 guitarists and changed their name from The Sparrows to Steppenwolf.
You don’t need substances to enjoy Steppenwolf and other bands of the day, but if you’re doing the right substances😉 it can take you to a whole new dimension you can’t even imagine or believe!!! 👍I am totally grateful for those experiences and dimensions, without question the greatest memories and time of my life!!! 🎼👍🎶👌🎵✌️😁
I heard this song when I was twelve and it made me realize I was a rock n roller and I never looked back thank you Johnathan Kay you changed my life and what a great time for rock music the 70's was the greatest decade of all time
read that Jon Kay was born color blind - in the interview he said acid made no sense cause he couldnt see colors, the song is about how music transports you on a Magic Carpet
I remember when they first released this and have always loved it. In the early 90's a bunch of us guys from the AFB hit a club in Destin, FL named Night Town looking for the ladies as usual and I was floored when Steppenwolf came on stage and opened with this this. We had no idea they would even be there.. It was usually newer up and coming groups.Sounded as good as 1967.
Now this is a rabbit hole you definitely want to go down! Steppenwolf is like the definition of classic 60's hard rock. There's so much to explore, "Ride With Me", "Sookie, Sookie", "Jupiter's Child", "It's Never Too Late", "Snowblind Friend" and "For Ladies Only", to name just a few. You won't regret getting into this group. This was really cool, thanks!
Steppenwolf took their name from a 1927 novel by Hermann Hesse in which a middle aged man stuck in an existential crisis goes on several mind bending adventures with two young women he met by happenstance who attempt to help him get his groove back so to speak. When you're ready for more late sixties psychedelic rock of this sort, check out some of these classics -- Iron Butterfly "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", The Chambers Brothers "Time Has Come Today", Harry Nilsson "Jump into the Fire", Blue Cheer "Peace Of Mind", Strawberry Alarm Clock "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", Fever Tree "San Francisco Girls", Jefferson Airplane "Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon", Fairport Convention "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?", Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac "The Green Manalishi", The Turtles "You Showed Me", Donovan "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", Susan Christie "Paint A Lady", and Spirit "I Got A Line On You" along with many others.
Another great group of the 60's. They had so many hits!!! Your hippie music!! Our tie dyed shirts and hip plugger pants! We would play this song over and over to get high off the sounds of the music.
John Kay, the singer, had the perfect mix of coolness and badness. You did not want to mess with him. He's a great guy doing great things around the world. Much respect to him. Much respect to The Steppenwolf!
It takes a lot more than the music to be a hippie. You need the frame of mind and the feelings and what the hippie culture was all about. Things weren't the same then as they are now. Now, people are afraid and to much into themselves and what they want to care about anybody or anything else. These days people don't care about each other they way we did back then. When we wanted to change something, we had no problem letting the world know, now a days people care about what they want and don't care about anything else.
Truly a classic album and I still have a copy of it. There was nothing like it. I was a teen in the 60s and experienced a great many new and wonderful things....
This Came Out When I Was 15 Man this takes me back to my Bedroom. My Blacklights my posters and smoking a doob lol I'm now 67 and still loves this. Thanks

Most of 60’s music like Elvis, The Beatles, etc...was great. Never did like much of the “psychedelic “ music myself, but then, I always was an “old soul”
