Aww come Mike, real excavators don't wax their machines and you know it ! I keep a set of pruning loppers behind the seat just in case of tree branches ! Don't need anything hitting me in the eyes unexpected !
I live in Central Oregon and we have ROCK, what you dug is called "hard pan" and its just a bother. The standard equipment is the Rock hammer and endless hours of hammering. Like your show, it reminds me of my early days working for a small company out of Portland. Lots of old equipment that got the job done, mostly mud and dirt. The first rock sewer line was blasted as rock hammers were not around. Middle of the winter, my noise was running and when I flick the drip it was ice. I decided an inside job was required. Still have a backhoe after 50 yrs in and around construction. Enjoy your show, brings back lots of memories.
I knew you were good at what you do but once again I'm impressed at the way you dug out that Rock without tearing up any of the equipment and at the same time explaining how to do it can be done with patients but that tree limb would have drove me nuts. Great Video
LOL , that is like the pet rock I found for you, so busy I have not gotten to the vid I promised 😉 , I am carving it out with the short 5 foot clean up bucket.
The little tractor that could... almost! You'd wear a loader and tractor out in no time trying to dig that rock. Good job! I'm sure the homeowner enjoyed his project moving along a little faster than that NH could do lol! Thanks for the video!
Great job again Mike, the hardest work is in rock...lol You handled that like a BOSS and I'm betting the homeowner was thrilled to have you do the work. Hard to believe he moved all that material with that small tractor before hitting the rocky stuff and having you come in with your Deere. Fantastic segment with the drone, some really nice shots of your equipment and your mighty Mack road tractor! Work safe, enjoy your weekend with your family Doug@ the "ranch"
My OCD would not let me finish watching the video because of the limb in the window. Haha however this is probably how I'll have to dig my basement in Arkansas.
The thing that gets me with those sedimentary rocks, like that sandstone, is that a whole lot of water had to put that sand there, so at one time that was either a riverbed or the bottom of a sea or ocean. Then you turn around and look at how high up on a hill you are and the way the rock seams angle into the ground and think about how hard that rock is, to us, yet the earth moves it around like it is a bedsheet.
And the layers are originally deposited flat. You can see in the video its shifted to an angle. Also, you will find those same layers matching at different jobsites, but different elevations, dip angles, missing or added layers. Geology is a fun subject and exploring sedimentary rock like that is easy for beginers. Exploring the changes and remenants of glaciers on the local landscape is interesting too, but I don't know if those extended all the way down to southern Indiana during the last ice age. Geologists gotta thank the guys digging holes! They provide some the best views of rock on road cuts. And archeologists too, if you don't accidentally dig up some dead bodies to study nobody would have known they were there.
Nice video. Just today I found out the spot where my new home is going to be built has solid limestone rock 3’ below the surface. I’m trying to figure out how to deal with this problem! Dozer? Excavator with thumb? Dynamite? What is fastest!
Growing up in wv I spent alot of time underground, (caving). Understand "if rock could talk". Seen some wild things. Most of the sandstone here is stupid hard. Same with limestone. Great vid.
If I'm correct, a monolithic pour is everything is done at the same time instead of in stages. If you do it in stages, you end up with cold joints which are weak points in the concrete. Do it all at once and you have no cold joints and everything is cured the same.
I HAVE A FEW CASES of stuff that make that job a snap, works great here in shale rock on the seams, opens it up just nice, works on huge stumps too. farmers number one tool here, you never said what you were on the back for weight, you said you was going to go over the scales, sure that home owner was most likly at it for days, anything is possible with a small machine, but how much life he took off that little tractor..
Great video! I'm almost in the same predicament as your customer. Can you help me out with just what you charged estimate wise on that job plus per hour. I'm in middle Tennessee and have ran into rock on the back side of my dig out. I know there's a lot of variables. Thank you.
you need a ripper bkt for you,re dipper work,s great in frost too do you charge more for dipping in rock than dirt it is amazing what you can find unmarked i found four inch rural water line in big pond damn one time they detoured because of solid rock oh boy did that tighten me up out here in mo they run h2o fiber any where searching for path of least resisantence keep the rock,s flying but keep them in Indiana we have all we need in Mohace an enjoyable evening wish mrs dirt perfect happy mothers day
I know, this one is 6 months old but they don' t spoil. Anyway, this one is a perfect example of "overriding labor". How do you get paid when a job turns into 8 feet of rock? Just wondering and thanks for what you do for all of us. Sonny (CT)
I can see how a hammer would be a waste of time in that sandstone. It digs hard, but it digs. That coupler looks a bit loose. May be time to start thinking about pins and bushings.
Whenever I see anyone videotape a questionable situation, I always assume it will be used against them in a court of law. It looks like the math on your trailer weight was good. But those holes left uncovered at the end of the day... I can only assume you get away with that on private property. Nice work though. Be safe out there. Cheers!
it wouldn't go like that in our bed rock, granite. it takes 10 stick down 8 feet, drilled every 2 feet a part, in both directions, same thing in our Amethyst and quartz. but in our black shale. one in a bottom crack makes fast work
Letsdig18 would have had a heart attack with those tree limbs on the excavator, lol. Great work Michael as always.
lol may not happen if I get a new one 😜
That why Let's dig machines look like new.

Good video. I love picking at rock when i'm not rushed or looking for a beautiful finished product

I have thought about that before kinda crazy
is not the earth that moved it, was the ice age, that moved it and pressed it tight..

Dog walks into bar, climbs up on a stool and says, bartender, bring me a beer".
The bartender says, "Holy s***! A talking dog".

That’s right watch the comments sure he will have a opinion lol
Man i can't believe u got that without a hammer. Sure saved him some $$. Little hard on ol 120 though i would imagine. But u gotta use whst u got
Yup sometimes patience pays off in these situations
I can see how a hammer would be a waste of time in that sandstone. It digs hard, but it digs.
That coupler looks a bit loose. May be time to start thinking about pins and bushings.
Oh, the time for thinking has already passed. That ol' girl needs em.
Yup I agree if I don’t buy a new machine this fall it will get done thanks for watching guys
Love your videos, my friend! Keep 'em coming, and I'll keep on watching!
Did you include your fuel on your cab? I'd be hoping Officer Hoover ain't hiding somewhere with a set of portables!😫😂
