Just to clarify. This is not screamo big difference in sound and different genre as well. Mark’s vocals is called gutteral or growling. It’s a death metal style of vocal. This is also symphonic metal.
They are a Dutch symphonic metal band. This footage was from their 2022 tour in Mexico. Her name is Simone Simons, she was 17 when this band formed in 2002. She switched to this style of singing , from pop, during training after hearing Tarja with Nightwish. Founded by guitarist, and harsh vocalist, Mark Jansen after parting ways with his former band ,After Forever. He was a co-founder of AF, which was the first band Floor Jansen joined at age 16. (Mark and Floor are not related. Coen Janssen on keyboards, Isaac Delahaye on guitar, Rob van der Loo- bass, and drummer Arien van Weesenbeek are the current lineup. 8 albums and several EP's to date. This song is from their 8th album, Omega, lyrics by Simone, music by Coen. A lot of their songs have harsh vocals by Mark, but not all.
Jansen is just a very very very common name in the Netherlands. Like Müller in Germany or maybe Taylor or something like that in english.
@@ingobordewick6480 Try Johnson in the US 🤪
Hi the lead singer is Simone Simons, she has been the singer for EPICA since 2002 when she was 17 years old, she is also a photographer and a L'Oréal model
Epica are pretty much Nightwish with balls. The heavier cousin and they’re great friends with Nightwish, plus the fans of both bands.
They are a very unique band. They define symphonic metal. During their 10th-anniversary Retrospect show in 2013, they had a full orchestra and choir with them.
Please listen to the song Unleased from that show. It is such a beautiful song. Another recommendation would be Kingdom of Heaven Part 3 from the Omega Alive virtual show. It is long, but it's one of the greatest live shows I've ever seen.
I concur
Hi ladies, welcome to the wonderful world of EPICA, 🙃
I think you will really like this one, EPICA just released a new live video from a concert earlier this year in Amsterdam, it's incredible:
EPICA - Unleashed (Live At The AFAS Live)
I love seeing people discover the beauty of Epica! Pretty rare that they come to the U.S. but they are worth a road trip to see live
Simone is amazing
Best symphonic metal band 🔥
Even though I am a long time old school hard rock and metal fan, I never cared for the growling. Then I started to get into symphonic metal that sometimes incorporated it. At first, it was like: "Yeah, I could do without that, but this song is good"...Then it was: "Yeah, I don't mind the growling"...To: "Gee, I hope they do some growling in this one"...
Just takes some getting used to! Time and repetition are also a great way to learn to parse the lyrics during growled sections. Eventually, it becomes second nature and you can understand what they’re saying on first listen.
This is the best band in the world. This song is from the last album and it is a masterpiece. I hope you continue with them, they have a huge catagolgue, please try their song ( Rivers ft Apocalyptica liclve at AVAS), you will surely enjoy it, it has no growls, you can say it's an epic ballad.
Awesome!! Thank you for the suggestion! It’s going on our list!
The Netherlands just as Floor Jansen from Nightwish, they are good friends.
Hi Ladies!
This subgenre is called symphonic metal and you've just discovered the best band in it! 🙂
Simone Simons is not just an amazing singer but also a gorgeous woman. The band is Dutch (Netherlands).
You definitely need to see and hear more! I'll give you something without the "screamo":
EPICA - Unleashed (Live at the AFAS Live)
So you first thought there were 3 girls? Well, here's a collab of Epica with another 2 female singers:
EPICA - Sirens - Of Blood and Water (Official music video)
I would definitely recommend reacting to the song suggested at the end of the video, Sancta Terra with Floor Jansen (of Nightwish) at the live Retrospective performance.
Welcome to the magical world of the in my opinion best symphonic metal band out there! This band is sooooo freaking talented and are beyond amazing. Simone's beautiful crystal clear soprano voice is from out of this world and she still gets better and more powerful with each year, and yes she is very gorgeous! Greetings from the Netherlands, the land of Epica! 🇳🇱🤘🏻
Please, do more EPICA!
Next song for you with no harsh vocals - Unleashed (Live at the AFAS live)
Wonderful song to start with! I don’t think any other reactors have done this as their first Epica. This was special! Epica’s entire catalogue is incredible! Some highlights are:
A Phantasmic Parade
Unchain Utopia
Martyr of the Free World
Kingdom of Heaven Pt 3
Hi, Girls, great reaction video I absolutely love Epica and Nightwish, for me there's no one better as good maybe but not better. As some of the people have mentioned the retrospect 10th anniversary concert 2013 is a good one to give it a view. Sancta Terra, stabat mater dolorosa both ft Floor Jansen, stabat Mata dolorosa is a cover of Giovanini Battista Pergolesi's sacred music piece with Orchestra and choir. ( without the metal band) and Unleashed has a good intro that I've not heard on any other video or record I think you will enjoy.
The orchestral intro for Unleashed exists on "This is the Time" CD 🙂 ua-cam.com/video/eFhYcmsHYdo/v-deo.html
It's a duet version with Amanda Somerville: ua-cam.com/video/z7_DtbzVP9k/v-deo.html
Ooooh more Symphonic Metal. You should do Sancta Terra Live Retrospect from Epica. Simone is joined on Stage by Floor. The 2 of them together are amazing.
Welcome family Epicans ❤❤
Hi, what a great reaction, it's always lovely to see new people discovering Epica!
Epica usually uses the contrast between the growls and the clean vocals. But not always. And they also have some metal ballads you may really like.
The singer, Simone Simons, personally also really loves classic Disney songs, and she's recorded some of those, as well as some songs you may know from musicals, in less formal situations than actual concerts and albums. She also doesn't seem to shy away from collabs with other bands.
Simone also moonlights as a fashion blogger and photographer. Her blog is called Smoonstyle. I believe she has a signature makeup and/or perfume which you can get if you're into that sort of thing.
UA-cam has become extremely strict about posting links, even internal youtube links. So I am replying to myself to give you the suggestions for further listening. Hopefully this doesn't get blocked.
Here are some suggestions for you:
* the song "Quietus" from their 10th anniversary concert in 2013 with a symphony orchestra and choir: ua-cam.com/video/G6z-1dXEVro/v-deo.html
* the song "Unleashed" form the same concert: ua-cam.com/video/rxd6sxLxdys/v-deo.html
* the song "Serenade of Self-Destruction", from an outdoor concert in 2012, notice the hair swirling in the beginning: ua-cam.com/video/62GdHwdgKoM/v-deo.html
* the song "Another Me", from a concert in Amsterdam in 2006, so a very early recording: ua-cam.com/video/1XDF0V7Q8U0/v-deo.html
* the song "Rise Again" where Simone joins another band called Apocalyptica, recorded live in winter 2023: ua-cam.com/video/dCplcb8NaJA/v-deo.html
* the song "Memory" from the musical Cats, from a recorded-for-TV session in 2004 -- just Simone with keyboardist Coen and the backing singers: ua-cam.com/video/85tBXrGsN78/v-deo.html
These songs are all free of growling! No vocal chords were harmed during the recording of this music! I hope you can check all of them out.
Ok EPICA has so many epic songs ballad songs metal kick ass songs with opera tones death metal with piano tones WOW WOW CRY FOR THE MOON 🌙 THE SECOND STONE … UNLEASHED
Glad you have finally found the best symphonic band out there. Simone' s voice is that of an angle
If she was an angle she'd be a-cute.
@@aesbj9228 spelling was never my strongest point
@@laserman9566you and me both!!!
@@aesbj9228 That's a brilliant reply dude :D
This is NO rock, this is symphonic Metal!!
Just a thought, could the subscriber who requested this video possibly be Abi Diaz 55 ? 🤭😁 I had never heard of this band before, but that's what is so cool about your channel and reactions, you are introducing new music to old farts like myself. 🤣 Great reaction ladies ✌️
HA!! yes, my name is Abi Diaz. The 55 stands for my fire engine company (and now my age as of this writing)
I am LOVING the vibing of you girls growing up to start liking metal
Metal have subgenres that can touch anyone, and you just discovered your pathway: Symphonic Metal or metal with female vocals in general is a start for a lot of people
Epica is one more fabulous band from Europe, in this case from the Netherlands. Others are Nightwish (Finland) Sabaton (Sweden), Rammstein (Germany), to Name the Most important ones! Norway has Another genre: folk Rock, folk songs, f.i. Aurora, Wardruna and more. Check it Out.
Great reaction ! Ladies ,Epica is a Dutch band, I think you might enjoy: Epica - Sancta terra ! (Feat floor Jansen ! Live Retrospect show) thanks !
Fantastic!
Great reaction ladies! Floor sang a couple songs with them in concert and I think you'd enjoy those.
And there you can see how Floor and SImone put hands on the hips when doing the Dutch windmill hairshake. Probably easier and safer on the neck that way.
I love your journey through the symphonic metal world. I came across Epica myself through Nightwish and couldn't do anything with Mark's growling. But it was another song called Consign to Oblivion where his part is much bigger. In the beginning I also had to fight with it but the more often I heard Mark the better it became. In the meantime I have heard Epica live 4 times and it was a unique experience every time. So please continue with Epica, my suggestion would be a video of their anniversary tour, also a concert summary like this song, I think you will be surprised. Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/YiJ5r8cNiq8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=EPICA. Greetings from Germany
you guys really should listen to Unleashed live retrospect, it is 10x better and they play with a full orchestra
Side fact about SImone....she is married to the keyboard player of another band that you might enjoy. Look up a band called Kamelot....they are more of a symphonic progressive metal sounding band, but insanely talented! And unlike most bands of the kind, they are actually based in the US out of Florida!
Yes, code of life. Good choice!!!!
Another great reaction! Another symphonic metal band like Nightwish but darker and heavier. They are Dutch. Epica is very much about the contrast. Both between the heavy guitars and drums and Simone's voice and also between Mark's growls and Simone's voice. It is called beauty and the beast style. Love the middle eastern vibe of this song. First Epica song I recommend for non metal people to listen to is Unleashed from their Live 10th anniversary Retrospect concert. They just released a live version from their recent concert tour that is good but the Retrospect version is more epic with a full orchestra and choir on stage. From the same concert you might also like Sancta Terra with Floor Jansen joining as a guest singer. No growling in either one. Epica also is famous for their gorgeous ballads. Rivers official live from either Chile (video work by jen the panda is stunning) or official live with Apocalyptica from their recent tour or the acapella version from Omega Alive. Also one of my favorites is Sirens - of Blood and Water with Charlotte Wessels and Myrkur. Inspired by the original Little Mermaid story by Hans Christian Anderson. Speaking of which Simone has recorded a beautiful cover of Part of My World form Disney's Little Mermaid. With her red hair she makes the perfect Ariel. ua-cam.com/video/aau6nI04G9k/v-deo.html. Simone also has a blog called Smoonstyle where she shares her love of fashion and photography.
If you want melodies Epica is the right group for you. Try some of their ballads such as Rivers, Tides of Time, Feint, Run for a Fall.
Welcome to Epica, another worthy journey. Thanks
Simone the Singer came with 17years to Epica and is now 43years old and is one of the best sopranos in Metall 🤘
Epica is Symphonic Metal, and they are Dutch!
The next step in symphonic metal should be "Sancta Terra" and "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" (Pergolesi Giovanni Battista, a medieval hymn), both "live" songs with Floor Jansen.
Enjoy watching and listening (if you haven't done it yet, I'm 4 months late).
Warm greetings to all ladies!
arch enemy handshake with hell official video
The singer from Epica is the Liddel sister from.the singer of Nightwish in Metalll in real live they are best frends
"Rock"... "Screamo".... 😐
They are a Symphonic Metal band from the Netherlands. The guys were using a vocal technique called growling.
Yes, Mexican flag and speaking spanish... So you know musicians go on world tours, right? 😂 And it's just common courtesy to say thank you in the country's main language that you're playing in.
Yes...Her hair is fabulous...
Not to mention her voice 🙂 Did you hear the latest upload of "Unleashed" from AFAS Live? Pure gorgeousness in her voice 🙃
@@cancelled_userher voice is like heaven my friend, and yet she still becomes better and more powerful! Our Simone is sooooo freaking good!!
@@fritsyt2090 Yes mate. I really love her 🙂
@@cancelled_user i love her more friend 😈 lol
Nederland haha echt wel
Warning the singer Simone is one of the best sopranos in Metall 🤘
Next beautiful song Epica- Death of a dream
Nah, they won't like the growls.
and almost 4K 🎶
We jus hit 4k Barbe!!!
@@LeliawithImmediatelyyes Congrats! Please, can you do more EPICA?
This is not a band for 1 reaction. Next song for you with no harsh vocals - Unleashed (Live at the AFAS live)
That needs to be heard with good headphones and watched on a large screen. It's a stunning piece of art!
growl is not a screemo
As Mr Criso said. This is Symphonic metal. The same type like Nighwish plays
Metal itself has many different genres. Like powermetal, death metal and so on. Then theres still bands playing hardrock like I would say Bandmaid for an example even if they just like Lovebites have different metal influences...Like metal, punk, and trash for an example.
And theres offcourse ordinary rock....
Along ure way in discovering new music. It will certainly allways be people in the commentary section who will guide you.
Some bands are very distinctive in genre. And some blends like Lovebites for an example...
This isn't the video of Epica I would have chosen to introduce you to them. I find this one unsettling, for some reason -- maybe all the cuts from scene to scene.
Great Ladies that you got to Epica- I would have suggested ‘Consign to Oblivion’ or maybe “Rivers’ ft Apocalyptica or ‘Sancta Terra’ ft Floor Jansen for your first listen to Epica as the video for ‘Code of life’ is a bit all over the place, but maybe you could get to them in a later episode. You should also introduce Black Pegasus to these guys as he has begun exploring Symphonic metal with Nightwish but so far has not touched Epica. (Great collaboration on REN by the way). Epica has a great balance between Simone’s pure vocals and Marks harsh vocals with the harsher vocals being used for effect within the music not just a continuous barrage.
Thank you for the support and suggestions!
Screamo? That’s Emo music with screaming vocals. Scr-EMO. This is Symphonic Metal with a world class Soprano and Death/Black Metal vocals. Colloquially called Beauty and the Beast vocals. Please don’t use the term Scr-EMO generically.
Epica cane from the Netherlands and Belgium Simone s best frend sing by Nightwish
Great reaction girls, maybe start with the songs of Epica feat. Floor - Stabat Mater Dolorosa or Sancta Terra.
Simone does not need Floor to showcase her vocal power, skills and beauty.
Nobody said she did
@@richardwest6358for us Epicans it start to irritate that there are always people start about songs of Epica feat. Floor. Why is that, Floor and Nightwish get enough attention on youtube, it is time to let people enjoy (in my opinion) the best symphonic metal band out there: EPICA!
nice one ladies.
Simone and Floor are besties.
you'll find epica and nightwish fans love both, at least i do.....
another rabbit hole.
Already some good suggestions so i wont'add.
But retrospect anniversary with full orchestra and choir, and Afas a good listen.
Not into the mash up videos, the proper live ones are amazing. Simone is amazing and the band is fantastic.
Just to be pedantic for a sec though, It’s not screamo. ;)
Thank you for reviewing my request. This concert was in Mexico, hence the flag and "gracias". Yes, Unfortuneately, I'm not that much of a fan of the growling either but to me, it's greatly overshadowed by her AMAZING voice. To REALLY appreciate her range, I HIGHLY suggest listening to the song Stabat Mater Dolorosa, from their Retrospect video. NO metal, No growling. It's a classical bit sung by her and her dear friend from Nightwish, Floor Jansen. I promise you will be not be disappointed.
Geoff castellucci / I see fire please 🎶🔊
Very interesting sound. Clear Middle-east and Norway-ish insperation. Hannah starts bobbing at the first note. 🏁 I really thought you would be more into rock. I'm surprised.
i like her voice epica is a band from netherlands her voice reminds me of Evanescence Amy lee
Yes, but more powerful vocals is Simone, and like Tommy Karevick possessing perfect pitch
you are looking all. very HAPPY. What 's going on with you !!!
Time for nightwish 😊
No thanks, first more EPICA. Nightwish gets enough attention.
Bands like Epica and Amaranthe are so good and have talented singers like Simone Simons and Elize Ryd. But to me, the growling vocals just ruin a song.
Same here. Great songs then "poof" ruined by growling. Don't understand the fascination of it. Why they need to include it; must be like pop songs need to have a mandatory rap verse or Sean Paul in the mix.
You talk, quite rightly, of how good Amaranthe is and then say you don't like growling ! Amaranthe has three singers - one does nothing but growls !!!
@@richardwest6358 I'm aware of Andreas Sovestrom and Henrik (forget his last name) doing the growling. My point was bands such as Amaranthe and Epica are so good and musically a pleasure to listen to, but to me, the growling death vocals (or whatever you wish to call it) ruin a lot of songs for me that they both do.
Growling and screaming in metal was developed to accompany the overall harsh and abrasive sound of guitars and drums. Metal is supposed to be harsh. Later with more female lead singer entering the metal scene, the concept of "beauty and the beast" was born in Gothic metal. And that's what Epica use as well. Mark's growls fit perfectly into many songs. It's a huge mistake not listen to Epica just because of the growls. Not to mention that growls can grow on you! It has happened to many people who previously didn't like it. Just like some others didn't like operatic singing and now they do.
That being said, Epica also has songs with no growls at all. Do any of you know them?
i accept the growls in some songs
Wrong song ladies. You need to do "Sancta Terra".
Santa Terror lol
This is a better song and representation of where Epica is as a band these days.
@@ResurrectionDreams I'm going to disagree.
Here's some advice: if you don't know what you're talking about, don't use the word "screamo". Screamo is just, as the name sugests, emo music with screaming. That doesn't mean though, that anything with screams in it, is emo music (which isn't even metal to begin with). Also, screamo has been traditionally used by Americans as a derogatory term for all music with screams, so the only thing you're going to achieve by using that term is to piss people off.
🤓
u looks so bored
Chill some ladies….you are not metal heads are ya? Maybe too much for ya here??
The one on the left might be. She also likes growls a bit. Maybe they should try a ballad next.
Unfortunately this is close to, if not the worst song they have ever created...
You should try one of these:
- the last crusage
- cry for the moon
- consign to oblivion
the hell you're talking about???!!!
It's one of their best actually
That singing is called guttural, screamo is a pop genre of US extreme rock, Guttural singing is used for Death Metal, this is not a Death Metal band though, but they come from the early 2000s scene, and this type of mixing Power, symphonic, Gothic and death metal was a thing back then, more a Symphonic metal band nowadays.
