- "Punk is not a style of music. It's more a state of mind."
-Mike Watt (fIREHOSE, Minutemen)
In many ways, music made with modular synthesizers and punk rock come from a very similar mentality. Here's a few examples of where these two artforms meet:
1. Beginners are welcome--you don't need to be a virtuoso to feel included
2. The LGBTQIA+ community is alive and well
3. DIY aesthetic
4. To a certain extent, we are outsiders and proud of it
This performance was created for the Modular World live stream event called Patch-On: Punk Rock on Jan 30, 2022. This patch-challenge series offers an opportunity (either technical or a genre) to the modular community to try on something different, or to stretch themselves to create something they might not typically create.
The whole show is here:

The track name is taken from the Lion of Zion image that the Bad Brains used as their logo in the early years. I love that band so much, and in my guitar days, they were very influential on my sound.

This thing is nuts, love the baseline
haha---thanks, my man.
Solid IRON
well thank you!
Perhaps a new sub-genre: sci-fi acid jazz punk! Wonderful.
lol---I love it. Thanks, Greg..
That show is so inspiring. It's like the C-86 for modular. No, I take that back. It IS the new C-86.
This show is like being a kid in 1976 and going to the 100 Club and seeing the Sex Pistols. I finally know what I want to do with my modular. I hope you have this show every year, and one day I may be on it!
I suppose I could do it again! Honestly, I hadn't thought about it to be a recurring event. But why not?!
@@JohnoWells For sure! There are many artists that would love to do this and many who would return again.
Thick🦁
haha--thanks!
Finaly punk understood a capitalist banker could morgage him a ~30k$ setup !
Too true! Sadly, one problem in modular is the price of admission---very different from my days in punk bands where we could find a crappy guitar and make music. But----Doepfer, TipTop/Buchla, Behringer are working hard to level the playing field and cost of entry. Exciting times! Thanks for watching!
