Oxalis and Wells - Blind Collaboration - Live in Boston
On May 4, 2024, Oxalis and Johno Wells played together in Boston, MA at the Glitch Gallery for a show put on by Anda Volley called Soft Collaborations. This unique show paired 8 musicians into 4 pairs of artists who had never worked with each other, or in some cases - even met.
These one-off collaborations were truly performed in the moment and were fantastic examples of improvisation and deep listening. Enjoy!

Arbhar 2.0 - How to Load Scenes
Переглядів 1,6 тис.7 місяців тому
Arbhar 2.0 (from Instruo) is a fantastic granular synth module for the eurorack modular synthesizer format. It was already powerful - now it's a little nutty. (As in...more powerful). One of the biggest new features in 2.0 is the scene architecture, where you can load 6 samples into individual layers and save it. This is a game changer for performances, as you can load up to 36 scenes on the fr...

This performance was shot in Joshua Tree National Park in the Chollas garden and was created for the now-historic @ModularWorld Patch-On // REVERB show that broadcast on 12/10/23. I used the SOMA Terra and processed it in post and also added a few textures - voice-over (butterfly varieties) and the Arturia CS-80 (VST) for the bass. How to swap SOMA Ornament-8 screws to Pulsar-23 pins
Переглядів 753Рік тому
...It keeps you awake at night...."can those screws on my older SOMA Ornament-8 be switched out for something like the gorgeous pins on the Pulsar?" We've all been there. Today the nightmares can cease. I'm happy to tell you that you *can* swap out the screws on your Ornament-8. Any of the SOMA divisions would be happy to help you order some pins, and make everything right in the world again. (...
SOMA Enner and Strymon Starlab - Ambient GOLD.
Переглядів 1 тис.Рік тому
The SOMA Laboratories Enner is such a versatile and experimental synth, and pairs well with eurorack synthesizers - especially effects. Here I'm pairing it with the @strymon Starlab. Usually, the Enner is associated with noise, or experimental textures that might need a larger musical context to "work." In this short exercise, I took Enner to ambient places with a few simple drones and light mo...

Is it just me or is it very fiddly to get every sample to correctly load this way?!
Ya, it's fiddly. It's definitely a decision to load from different locations. LOL I don't see it being used much. Maybe you've curated a folder-ready to rock-andd then forgot one sample in another folder. Typically, I curate folders for an idea / session / patch.
Thank you! Had one of these go bad on me and rather than buying a new machine and worrying about compatibility, I figured I'd just throw a new fan inside.
This is an amazing series of videos, mate!
Thank you. They took a lot of work lol - glad they are helping you! Mission accomplished.
Awesome video series, really thanks so much for sharing this. Apparently you don´t have the module anymore but do you remember if the incoming CV on the loop start and end points is shown on the display?
Thanks - glad it's been helpful for you. Sorry I don't remember that. Anyone else?
rewatching this now----it doesn't look like it shows on the display. (you watched the video, right? :))
@@JohnoWells of course , but when you activated the cv for the loop points, then you didn’t go back to the loop page , so don’t know if that CV shows or not in the loop display
I love Rossum stuff I have a few pieces but when it comes to sampling after having Emu4 I’m so thankful for computer/sampling software to tweak than a mod.
Ya, have to agree. Modular is a properly pain in the ass way to make music. Why do we do this to ourselves? LMAO
@ lol OCD tweakers
@@dang48207 I mean...you gotta wonder.
Just want to test it and it crashes LUNA complete 3 times. In demo mode you have no chance to test it as all effects, such as envelope etc. is not active. There is not even an imprint who is behind and where they are, but they ask for a $100. Could be an interesting plugin but its asking for Russian roulette. Comments are turned off in all their videos. I'm out.
How are you powering the Terra outdoors?
it's the Jackery 1000. TOTAL overkill for this..but it's what I have. It's what we use for outdoor events for Modular San Diego.
This is a great walkthrough! I’d be very curious to hear if there are any interface improvement suggestions that have come through using Arbhar so extensively? (Beyond colour vagueness!) There are so many buried features in the module. Could any changes have been made to help make it more intuitive? Thank you for posting this.
Hi! Your first question--I haven't heard any. I think people are using this module less and less as it gets so convoluted. Sadly, I am one of them and I've talked with others. Obviously, I can ignore the v2 update stuff and use it how I always have, but I'm maybe a little sore that I have over $700 in this thing now (with the USB add on for v2) and it's getting less fun to use. I dunno. Your second question sounds rhetorical. But if it's not, my answer is yes! LOL! Thanks for hanging out!
@ not rhetorical :) I’m always listening for feedback on the topic of UX design. “Feature creep” very often leads to complications in interface coming after hardware is defined. Especially in digital instruments. With the V2 firmwares for both Arbhar and Lubadh, the software had very much outgrown the hardware. But we all felt like going the rout of an Arbhar 2 would have been a disservice to the support we’ve seen for the module to date. There’s room to grow in terms of the processors’ capabilities. But the hardware only has so many buttons, pots and LEDs. We came up with solutions that didn’t drastically change or replace existing interface workflows. We definitely made use of as many button combinations as the module allowed!
@@JHJLIM You spoke of "we" above, which raised an eyebrow, so I clicked your name to find out you are Jason Lim, of Instruo! LOL, now I understand your first question better. No, I don't have any suggestions, really. From my work with a few companies in our industry, I hear you on "feature creep" 100%. It's hard to STOP and let a product have a life, when you can tweak forever and just release new firmwares, etc. And I also understand It's hard work to come up with something even somewhat new, and innovations like Arbhar will live forever in eurorack, IMO. I hope that beyond some of my disparaging comments you can see that I truly love Arbhar. Bottom line - we have six 10-second buffers that can be fantastically controlled with a gorgeous reverb to boot. Well done. :)
legend. can you choose the start of each crop instead of being transient based?
Incredible, detailed walkthrough at a pace even I could follow. I managed to do this on my 7u performance case. I'm wondering if you have tried this on the 104 pallet case? I can't even see the pins tucked under the 1u area. It's hard to see anything. Do you know if it's possible?
This is so helpful, thank you!
Thank you very much ❤
Thanks for this. It is worth noting that, if and when you change out the fan, make sure you blow out the mat of dust that packs in between the replaceable fan and the stationary grill it interfaces. I have a feeling that the old fan might actually still function after I deep-cleaned those components! I also taped some screen fabric on the vertical-mesh-vent sides of the outside of the NUC to trap dust before it enters the unit. My CMOS battery had to be replaced after just over 3 years' time.
This was amazingly helpful! Thank you!
Hello Johno, is it possible to connect it to a sequencer like Keystep Pro?
I've been listening to my NUC fan getting crunchier for several months. Found your video, ordered the replacement - and then was just too busy/chicken to actually sit down and swap it out. I finally balled up yesterday and made it happen...and it's amazing. In fact - the new fan is so quite I didn't even think it was working lol. PERFECT video - thank you for taking the time!!!
I love the creativity as well as the simplicity of this setup. Never heard of the Arbhar before.
Thanks for the videos. Super helpful. Can you tell me how to got your zone voltages to snap to positive values only? Eg. when you chop or explode into 8 your voltage splits go -5.00, +0.63, 1.25... up to +5.00. When I do the same it spreads them evenly across -5.00 to +5.00 and I would really like it to do what yours does. Can't find a setting for it. Thanks.
I guess you got your answer already, but for everyone else with that question: in Zones menu doubleclick DATA1, go to BALANCE and set with DATA2 from 10V to 5V.
Really enjoying the textures and evolution of the palette on this piece...🔥🔥🔥
Absolutely f*** great instruction vid, you're just made my day with my new arbhar ;.) THANK YOU !
aw, thanks. That's great.
I found what I was looking for. Thank you for sharing this.
Sound like a radiohead song
Magical! Love that emotional sound along with visuals
Yeah, man---magical space!!
I just can figure out how to load a sample from one scene and put it in a specific spot of another scene (like coping). This on the arbhar itself. (...or am I confusing it with layers now...).
Since I made this video, I've completely forgotten it all. LOL.
Thirtytooths!
Great series. Phase modulation happens when "the modulator is directly changing the location in the carrier’s waveform, rather than changing the rate that the carrier oscillates by moving along through its waveform." This is Dave's explanation on the Assimil8or website.
Thanks for this, super useful. I really can’t complain about the module’s complexity when such a HUGE amount of functionality was added (and especially since I mostly bought it because it’s so beautiful to look at and rationalized the purchase that I’d actually use it!). But I do note really wish Instruō would release a separate “remote control” for the Arbhar and Lubadh modules so that I could not have to use this admittedly ingenious interface that you’ve so nicely explained here
Glad this was useful for you! Thanks for the kind words.
The lead pad and breathy bed carry the soul as the modular modulars enticingly. This made me think of music differently. Musical typoglycemia. Going to turn the modular on now, cheers!
Thanks for sharing this. I dove into the deep end with a full Eurorack set up based on a history of synth noodling. Being familiar with subtractive synthesis did not prepare me for this.
LOL, ya, I feel ya. Eurorack has gone pretty far out! LOL
Did you figure out why the pitch was lower? Was that a resolution mismatch?
My guess - the pitch knob was slightly to the left.
I don't recall---I'm so sorry - lol
sounds about right! :)
Is this just a visual improvement or do the pins have better connectivity? Thanks! :)
Definitely not "better" connectivity, but would you take "easier"? :) All the threads on the screws made it harder (for me) to deal with the alligator clips. The pins are smooth and have the grooves for ease, and are just more elegant IMO. If you have a Pulsar, you know.
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Just watched the whole series- this has got to be one of the best tutorials ever! Before watching i didn't even consider the assimili8or-now it's on top of my list...
That's great to hear! Glad it was helpful!
is it normal for the loop to stop once the loop start gets ahead of the transport? thats what my unit is doing
I don't have the module anymore, so I can't give good advice anymore. I don't remember, and now I can't check! LOL. So sorry!
Hi, how much were the new pins?
Around $50 if I recall from SOMA US.
Thx a lot! I don't get it how they justify the price difference of about 200 euros for the pulsar with just screws and this special pins...
Such a rad series to stumble upon after getting a long awaited Assimil8tor. Thank you so much, it’s helpful to go over a video and lock it in. Best wishes
That's awesome. Thanks for letting me know. :) Now go kill it on that thing!
Johno congrats on coming east for a show! Great set! Loved the edgy overdriven sound of on the beginning to the rain forest exotic descent to the edgy conclusion! Great audience!
Thank you, sir. Super fun performance and visit. Loved it.
What about the several disk based libraries and gui interfaces you made one as did others …. Could you comprise a list please 🙏
I haven't contributed anything like that---you might be thinking of the wonderful work of Chris Roberts. I'll tap him for a response here. instagram.com/cpr2323/
Absolutely loved this and it was a big help in understanding this module. Any more on layers and other functions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
WIll do! Glad it was helpful!
Great stuff 👏👏👏
Thanks, man. Appreciate the time. :)
Yes to this. Love the arc of the performance, it goes somewhere!
Yes to YOU, good sir. Thanks for hanging out, my friend.

Hello, thanks for your performance. Im totally new to this and would like to ask what that black box next to the terra is please. Blessings
Hey--welcome! The device on the ground next to the Terra is the Zoom H4n recorder. I'm going stereo out of Terra into that.
That was the most helpful part of your great series! Thanks for this work.
Ah--thanks for letting me know these are helping you. :)
@@JohnoWells Your way of structuring a tutorial is so good. I like those little chapters a lot. I know it's time intensive and not rewarding (financially), but I wish you'd do more of these for more modules. You could easily share no. 1 place with loopop tutorials 👍🏽 thx
What is the actual name of the fan conector? like mini 3 pin conector?
eeekk--sorry I don't know
Thank you for this! I hope you make more. As someone who bought an arbhar after the 2.0 update, I feel like there are very few good resources for learning how to fully utilize this thing.
Yeah, that's why I made this. I appreciate the 3 hr video on the 2.0 update..I really do, but yeah....not really.
@@JohnoWells a good video in its own right, but not succinct or necessarily musically relevant
@@JohnoWells I sometimes just put it on in the background hoping that I'll learn through osmosis
« Goofy » is the perfect word… my gosh. That’s soooo anti-user-friendly… Thanks for the video tho
LOL Crazy, right?
Thanks Johno, you're the best for tutorials (Assimilator, Qu-bit, ...)🙏
Ah, thanks, Yann. :)
