Steve's Small Engine Saloon Hey I have a question is there any way I can contact you or you can contact me. I have a husquv that won’t start and it was starting perfectly.
Is there a way to drain the oil from a Husqvarna 775 from the bottom of the mower that will get more of the sludge out, rather than tipping it sideways to drain the oil?
I should have watched this before cleaning the carburetor twice, doing the gas cap vent test, spark plug gap ext. My mower would periodically start but peter out after a few seconds. This cable was out of adjustment by a 1/16 of an inch ( right at the run/stop sweet spot). " a halfa inch at home isn't that bigga deal"!😆
@@miguelarceo617 I found out that grass under the mower was locking my blade when it did the same thing. I removed the grass build up and it works fine now.
Summary: The cable ends screw in/out, and by screwing both ends out a little bit (1/4 inch or so) you can lengthen the cable's outer sheath, which effectively shortens the usable portion of the cable, increasing the range of motion available to the kill switch actuator. Two things not mentioned: 1) On my mower (Murray 21"), the ends screw all the way off at about a half inch. 2) These dudes can be pretty tight. I needed to use pliers at first to get the initial twists, after that I could use my fingers. Really appreciate the video! This solved my problem and saved me from doing something weird like wiring up a manual switch in place of my kill switch!
Never been happier to be bilingual enough to follow your tips Steve, I've been fudging around my ol lawnmower for hours. Should've looked into this way before. Thx man!
Thank you so much!!! We just went through everything on this stupid mower, carb cleaning, valve adjustments, new magneto and spark plug, you name it, we tried it. I finally figured out the stupid cable wasn't being pulled far enough and didn't see any way to adjust it. You're awesome!
I just went through this same process so don’t feel bad. The mower would start intermittently and I had no idea why. Laughed (and cried) when I realized it was the cable.
You’re my go too for all things small engine repair. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve learned something just by watching your videos. Super helpful, Steve thank you.
Incredibly easy fix. Was going nuts today playing with the carburetor, gas, and air filter. Finally figured out control cable was the issue and this simple adjustment did the fix. Fired up first pull every time now
I just thanked you a million times; however, I was kinda lucky to stumble across this video. I noticed not having mush throw in the cable while cleaning the carburetor and at a last ditch effort looked for dead man cable not having much throw. What would be incredibly nice is a trouble shooting guide for mowers that run for short amount of time and shut off. This guide could link to each of your videos showing how to resolve the issue. Thanks a million again
11 videos and yours fixed the problem! Thank you. From a 55 year old woman who was sick of all the men on the block who knew "exactly what to do " ;) And you are the first channel I am subscribing to. THANK YOU!
Was about to order a belt and saw your video. Ran out and adjusted the cable and it worked! The best part is I told my wife that I'm not wasting time on the smart phone. I'm doing research and saving money. Thanks!
I wish I could give this video a hundred thumbs up!!! This is the video I've been looking for to show me how to adjust my "non-adjustable" lawn mower cable. Thank you so much!!!
Pure greatness. I was able to fix my Husqvarna mower in less time that it took to watch the video. I just popped of the mount closes to the handle unscrewed it about 3 or 4 turns and popped it back on and fired right up ! I really appreciate the assistance. The part is not that expensive, but now I can get back to work rather than waiting on a part to arrive !
Thanks so much. I have been repairing lawn mowers for about 10 years so i'm relatively new to the trait but I had no idea you could stretch out the cable like that. You have skills. Thanks So Much.
A big thank you Steve for the the tip on the cable adjustment. Two days working on a B&S 875 DWA checked & serviced everything still not starting, did what you said in the video bingo, going like a train !!! my French neighbour will be happy !! I live in France but I'am English. Cheer's Steve many thanks Dave.
Awesome Steve! I'm doing up a 1992 MTD mower for my son and was scratching my head on this cable problem! I had just finished solving the surging issue following "your carby clean video" and now running like a charm and ready for handover.... AAA+
Steve... the 1/2" I gained (It matters!) adjusting at the bottom of the cable was pure gold. One pull and the mower started right up again. Great "TIP".
Good to know I'm not alone with the knot method. Tied the knot, problem fixed in 2 minutes. Finished the lawn and opened a beer! Thanks for the info, I will do it the proper way next time :)
Found this video yesterday after trying to start the mower over 200 times pulling the cord. I made this adjustment and it started on the first pull afterwards. Many thanks to you.
As it turned out my cable was bad but I did first try this lengthening method...very easy eben for a novice to do. it was a great hack to learn. THANK YOU Steve!
Steve, the heavy spring is the problem. My chain link fence is loaded with all the bail handles I've taken as trophies, along with a bucket of the springs. The cables wear out, kink up and otherwise become non functional. Cut them off with nips, fashion a simple shutoff for the kill switch or spend the bucks for an electrical springloaded SP/ST switch and screw the rotor brake. I used to remove the brake, now I find that just letting it flop around as it only cleans off the face of the rotor ensuring clean magnetic flow to the coil with virtually no drag when it touches and if it does need to be removed, cut it away with a metal cutting wheel, in place, as it can be accessed directly from above or you can remove the bolt and do it in a vise. That monster spring that B&S uses is way too strong. They sell more cables because of this. If and when the cable kinks, I have used your method to buy more time but the inside run of the cable is wearing out anyway and hand straightening, then locking it down with zip ties and electrical tape and lubing the crap out of them might buy a bit more time. Customers hate when you tell them it's twelve to fourteen bucks for a new cable. They brighten up when you fix it with some "chewing gum and baling wire" as you really only need the kill switch to work. The brake on the rotor is for safety ( OSHA required for the manufacturer, so check with your risk manager if you should do this as a repair "professional" or if you are the owner of the machine, there I are no restrictions) so you have to remind them they have to keep their toes away from the deck when they reach down to kill the engine. The keeping it simple principle applies here. Especially with older mowers that turn into beaters anyway.
Dude . I was at my end . Replaced carburetor. New plug, new blade . I finally saw this video. Lmao I fixed the real problem with the adjustment in 2 minutes. I doubt there was anything wrong with the original after I cleaned it five times lol. New one only cost 15 bucks so worth it but this adjustment I was laughing at how easy it was and it runs like a champ now thanks man videos are awesome and very educational and you make it simple.
Steve is just fantastic and perhaps the best small engine mechanic I have ever watched and, I have spent many many hours watching small engine mechanics. But what's really happening is he is adjusting the connection points on the cable through the outer plastic shield. And as a result it has the effect of shortening the steel cable. In the past, I simply used zip ties and would attach the cable to the handle to make sure that it worked properly. Of course steve's idea is far superior. But as the cable continues to wear, Which most people mistakingly call stretch, Eventually there will not be enough adjustment on the outer plastic cable screw points to compensate. At that point you will need to resort to plastic zip Ties to attach the cable to the handle. Or simply spend ten dollars and replace the cable. Thanks again steve, you're the best! 👍👍👍
Thanks for this vid man! Best channel on UA-cam for this info. I've got a Lawnboy I was just working on this exact issue recently and you knew it, through our psychic bond!
Okay guys this proves it without any doubt. Steve is KING! I'll never again think that anybody can do this. But now anybody can do this. Keep dazzling us Steveo.
I ordered a cable that was too short! I thought that I had to get another, then I realized that the handle height adjustment was at max. I shortened the handle to the next set ….job done!!
Your cable tip worked perfect for me. Thank you very much... A problem I'm having is purchasing a new cable as a backup that fits...so many numbers out there...
And if the ends on your cable are fastened or molded securely and won't screw off, then get a short 3/8 diameter, half inch long bolt, nut, and two flat washers. Remove the cable end by the motor and wrap the cable around the bolt, between the 2 washers, two times and while pulling the cable tight, just tighten the nut on the bolt squeezing the cable between the washers. Try it and if you need it longer or shorter, just change the amount of wraps around the bolt. Saves buying a new cable and doesn't hurt the cable like tying a knot will do. Another method is to bend the cable into a little loop and push the loop through a 1/2 inch nut. When the eye of the loop pops through the nut, slip a short small screw through the loops eye and pull the cable tight. The screw will keep the cable from pulling back through the hole in the nut and your cable is now shortened. Use a larger size nut if you need to shorten it more or smaller nut if you need the cable a little longer. Hope these alternative methods help if your cable ends are glued tight like mine were. Good day! Jpol.
Steve's videos helped me clean out my carb a couple months ago and now helped me when the kill switch wasn't pulling far enough. I'm hitting that PayPal button Steve. From Texas, Thank you!
Youve saved my ass several times, im telling you. Im out off the grid so its not like i have a home depot, walmart close by or anyone to fix my shit. So thank you man, by the way, i bought me one of your shirts and what a conversational shirt its been. Thanks bro.
Hi Steve!! Samantha here. You had me @ the 1-beer comment. That's how I guage a job as well!!. lmao. So happy I stumbled onto your channel. Very helpful. I am a woman who likes to be independent and do her own repairs. Thanks for being here for a tomboy damsel.
Your repairs/adjustments are always the best, most are a 1 beer project. I have a question that may be a 3+ beer project. All the new mowers have a fixed carburetor. This is ok, but there are times I like to run the mower slower due to dusty conditions, pine cone ejection, etc. You get the point. Is there anyway to install a throttle on this type carb ?
I really like your style... you cover things that result in (sometimes) common sense, but you never make people feel bad for not noticing how to do things. You have a way of always staying positive and eguql to your audience by not talking down to them. That is a rare thing to see these days. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! And thank you for being a real human being when teaching people. I just subscribed and hope I can help you back somehow.. I would love to see you go far !!!!
Don't normally comment on videos, but you are the hero for the day! I had replaced the control (brake) cable awhile back but it always seemed to barely have any movement. It worked for awhile but recently stopped. Tried the conventional stuff like cleaning carb (looked good) and plug and so on, just it would not start! Didn't realize the cable was adjustable, thought it was just a wrong chinese part replacement I bought. Loosened both ends and wow it started right up! The only bad part was it wants to pull that handle mount out but nothing a few strategic zip ties to keep it from pulling out didn't fix. Thanks for the video!
I've been looking for months for a video for assistant in adjusting the kill switch cable. GLAD I FOUND YOU!! Don't know if it will work. But at least I can try it. I have to Thank You, even if it doesn't. THANK YOU AGAIN. EDWARD
After a couple of hours of trying to figure it out myself I finally found your video on UA-cam. 10 minutes later, problem is solved without even removing the cable. Now I plan to watch the rest of your videos. Thank you.
Thank you so much!!! My lawn mower stopped working about 3/4 of the way through today, I thought it over heated, but it was the break line. I didn’t need to adjust it I figured out that it came loose from the housing but the next time it happens I will adjust it, thank you so much!
Cliff on Cheers - "In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers"
That's exactly the reason why we are here ..... To help and educate people ...... I still have people thanking me on video's I made 3 and 4 years ago on my Boo LuQuette channel. I need to get back on that channel and make more how to vids again.....Lets do a live stream soon....
I know this is an older video but it saved my Husqvarna LC221A today! After ordering and installing two “factory correct” drive belts that didn’t fit 🤬 I saw this video and decided to try it on the drive cable for my AWD Husqvarna and it solved my problem, wish I had tried this from the git-go! Beware of non OEM belts that claim to be the correct size if your mower uses a custom belt that’s in between standard sizes, they usually won’t fit or work right and sellers on eBay and Amazon are often clueless!! Thanks Steve-O!!
You are the man!!! My 725 Craftsman with this engine wouldn't start, did the whole nine yards, cleaned the carb (also your video) and still no start, found this video and now it's running mint again 🙌
Steve, thank you for this information. I have been trying to get my mower started for a few weeks....I had changed / cleaned several things attempting to get it running again. I was about to give up and take it into a repair shop but I found your site by accident and tried what you suggested and it worked. Thank you for saving me some money to apply to some other things that need to be fixed.
TY TY TY TY thought that was the answer, it looked promising. I have a new cable not sure if that makes a difference but it did not work on my machine. the lever is still moving the same. now at a loss! you are one of the people i turn to for help and i enjoy your videos, clear explanations.
My Lawn Boy self propelled was very weak, turned the cable thing a few times and now it will pull itself and me. No tools needed just my fingers. Thank you so much for making this video, I had no idea about this.
Thanks Steve! Was trying to figure out why I wasn’t getting any spark. Turned out it was the cable had stretched. Saved me from having to buy a new cable!
My troybilt cable brake broke (awful sentence structure) two years ago and I bored a hole in the bracket and used micro U bolt to repair. When that corrodes promise I will buy from your link. Confirmed you have my cable. Great video and you also nailed the one beer time line. Working on small engines is way more fun when you drink! Cheers Steve
I'm with the other Comments when I say I fix A lot of Things, not just Small motors Etc.. And Didn't know of this Adjustment. Awesome Tip Mr Steve! Thank You.
Whut thaaaaa. Aint gonna lie, I taped a bottle cap off an empty quart of oil bottle and pout it between the cable and the handle bar. It worked in a jiff but I will be adjusting the cable tonight. Thanks Steve
I knew the ends screwed off but I didn't know they could be used like this. I flip a lot of push mowers and I just got one in today that needs this done. Thanks Steve, your videos are top notch.
Thank you!! I'll have to give that a shot. A elder friend of mine needed her mower fixed That cable broke. Replace cable. Won't start. I'll try this. Thank you again.
Worked for me yesterday adjusting the drivetrain tension cable. Will replace it with a new one soon but got me through a couple of more months. Thanks for video.
Very timely Steve. I "rigged one up" for a cheap $40 mower today. It is a mower for a young man starting out. I used the bracket that is adjustable that goes onto the handle. I would love to find another 10. It is for the cable that has the clip in at both ends. Engine and handle bare have the same end.
Huge thanks for this video and this super easy tip! And to all the other chicks out there like me, you can do this! Was messing around with the carburetor for a long time (plus new gas cap, new spark plug) and was about to give up and take it in ... And then I saw your video!!! I was able to adjust the cable and I just couldn't believe it when it started with a single pull! I probably do need to buy a new cable because it's really stretched out, but it's such a relief to pinpoint the problem and fix it on my own. I learned so much in the process! Many thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Well Steve you knocked another one out of the park every time I watch your videos I learn something new keep up the awsome videos and have a beer you deserve it
I have been fighting this for years. Every time I start my mower, I close the bale, then have to tug the brake cable sideways. That pulls it enough to let the mower start. Never was satisfied with the solution and shied away from the "knot". I expect the Steve solution will be put in place in the next 10 minutes. Thanks, I offer my humble thanks and appreciation!
So nice to see someone else doing what I have been doing for many a many years. Nice job Steve. Sometimes you can use a throttle cable and cut the solder formed ends off original cable and solder to the new cable and you are up and running in fifteen minutes max. Not counting going to either a local mower shop or close big box stores lawn and garden section in season. Good day.
Dude you are a mower God! You saved me a trip to the repair shop. Everyone else had me tearing apart the mechanism. Couple turns on the cable and it took off. NOW THE WIFE CAN'T COMPLAIN SHE CAN'T CUT THE GRASS! You Da Man!
Thank you for this valuable video. I knew my mower was not starting bc of the cable, but could not remember the procedure to make the adjustment. Found your video and BAM, mower running again like it's brand new. Keep up this great series.

Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Fantastic, simple and informative. You’re my ‘go-to’ for all my small engines needs
Thank you!
Youve saved my ass several times, im telling you. Im out off the grid so its not like i have a home depot, walmart close by or anyone to fix my shit. So thank you man, by the way, i bought me one of your shirts and what a conversational shirt its been. Thanks bro.
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
You have saved me so much money, time and built my confidence to try!!! Thank you

Hi Steve!! Samantha here. You had me @ the 1-beer comment. That's how I guage a job as well!!. lmao.
So happy I stumbled onto your channel. Very helpful. I am a woman who likes to be independent and do her own repairs. Thanks for being here for a tomboy damsel.
Welcome aboard!
Thank you Steve. Every time I have a problem I come to your video’s you never let me down. God bless
You are very welcome
Did not know those ends unscrewed, great tip, enjoy your videos keep'em comin ✌️
Thank You...
Steve is the Scotty Kilmer of small engine repair. Love this guy's content.
Well, thanks for this! I always just assumed those cable housing ends were molded or pressed on. DOH!
+1
You're Welcome...
I appreciate that!
Love you videos Steve they have taught me so much about repairing small engines. Keep up the good work 🍺Nigel in the uk.
Thank You...
You're Welcome...
Steve just saved me at least $16.00 and no beer! The LORD is good.
I've been looking for months for a video for assistant in adjusting the kill switch cable. GLAD I FOUND YOU!! Don't know if it will work. But at least I can try it. I have to Thank You, even if it doesn't. THANK YOU AGAIN. EDWARD
You're Welcome...
Once again, I learned something new. Thanks Steve!
You're Welcome...
After a couple of hours of trying to figure it out myself I finally found your video on UA-cam. 10 minutes later, problem is solved without even removing the cable. Now I plan to watch the rest of your videos. Thank you.
Right on Andre! You're Welcome...
Genius bro thanks for sharing
You're Welcome...
Thank you so much!!! My lawn mower stopped working about 3/4 of the way through today, I thought it over heated, but it was the break line. I didn’t need to adjust it I figured out that it came loose from the housing but the next time it happens I will adjust it, thank you so much!
Another good hack , thanks Steve
You're Welcome...
Six pack of Molson or Labatts to you Steve! Never, ever heard of this trick! Thanks!
Happy to help!
That’s proof that drinking beer will make you smarter. Great idea
Cliff on Cheers - "In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers"
Clears the cobwebs
I should be a flipping genius by now!!!
🍺
It sure does...
It made Bud Wiser!
That's exactly the reason why we are here ..... To help and educate people ...... I still have people thanking me on video's I made 3 and 4 years ago on my Boo LuQuette channel. I need to get back on that channel and make more how to vids again.....Lets do a live stream soon....
Great job on the mower cable now you the rest of story ( Paul Harvey) good day my Canadian brother 😀 😀

Will do!
Been having problems with starting...because of this issue. Going to fix it tomorrow..A big thanks to you Steve
Right on

Thank You...

You're Welcome...
Instructions on mower were written in French. That gives us an idea of where Steve lives.
Sam Ash I don't know why, but I'm pretty sure he's from Ontario. I can smell it on him. Everything in Canada has bilingual instructions though.
@@jimf1964 Canada, eh?
You are the man!!! My 725 Craftsman with this engine wouldn't start, did the whole nine yards, cleaned the carb (also your video) and still no start, found this video and now it's running mint again 🙌
Great to hear!
I'll be damned I always thought the ends were molded to the cable housing thanks Steve.
You're Welcome...
🤫 Don't be giving those companies any more ideas. Lol
Thanks! I just followed your instructions and my lawn mower is greatly improved! I owe you a beer!
Great job!
the obvious isn't obvious until it slaps you in the face
Steve, thank you for this information. I have been trying to get my mower started for a few weeks....I had changed / cleaned several things attempting to get it running again. I was about to give up and take it into a repair shop but I found your site by accident and tried what you suggested and it worked. Thank you for saving me some money to apply to some other things that need to be fixed.
Right on! You're Welcome...
Why'd you cover the beer Steve?
Thanks! I just put the mower up for the winter, besides sharpening the blade I will address the cable problem as the winter jobs. Enjoy your videos.
1/2 is a lot at home :P
TY TY TY TY thought that was the answer, it looked promising. I have a new cable not sure if that makes a difference but it did not work on my machine. the lever is still moving the same. now at a loss! you are one of the people i turn to for help and i enjoy your videos, clear explanations.
WELL I'LL BE DARNED ?????
It worked!!! Such a lifesaver. Now I have to finish mowing these leaves
Right on Buddy...
Thank you sir got my mowing in just before the rain started thanks to this video.
Good to hear
My Lawn Boy self propelled was very weak, turned the cable thing a few times and now it will pull itself and me. No tools needed just my fingers. Thank you so much for making this video, I had no idea about this.
Right on Trent! You're Welcome...
Thanks Steve! Was trying to figure out why I wasn’t getting any spark. Turned out it was the cable had stretched. Saved me from having to buy a new cable!
Excellent!
Thank You.
You're Welcome...
Whut thaaaaa. Aint gonna lie, I taped a bottle cap off an empty quart of oil bottle and pout it between the cable and the handle bar. It worked in a jiff but I will be adjusting the cable tonight. Thanks Steve
You're Welcome...
OK, it worked. I had to move the top part down a notch on the handle. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent!
I knew the ends screwed off but I didn't know they could be used like this. I flip a lot of push mowers and I just got one in today that needs this done. Thanks Steve, your videos are top notch.
You're Welcome...
Just might have saved my friend’s cable issue. Great presentation for us weekend warriors
Thank You...
Thank you!!
I'll have to give that a shot.
A elder friend of mine needed her mower fixed That cable broke.
Replace cable. Won't start. I'll try this. Thank you again.
Good luck!
Worked for me yesterday adjusting the drivetrain tension cable. Will replace it with a new one soon but got me through a couple of more months. Thanks for video.
You're Welcome...
Personally the whole knot tying thing worked just fine for me. Thanks.
Gonna have to try this on my GF’s mower! Hopefully I won’t need to replace it!
Thanks!
Good luck!
This was the solution to my lawnmower's issue. Thanks!
You're Welcome...
Cool Bruce! Thank You...
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
Thanks for this video, I replaced my cable for $10 (on Amazon) and was able to get my lawn mowed.
Excellent!
Well Steve you knocked another one out of the park every time I watch your videos I learn something new keep up the awsome videos and have a beer you deserve it
Awesome, thank you!
Right on Dale! You're Welcome...
Watched your video, went down to the garage, checked if it was ok, it was not, used your hack, repaired it.
Right on ...
You Da Man!
Right on Frankie...
Thank you for this valuable video. I knew my mower was not starting bc of the cable, but could not remember the procedure to make the adjustment. Found your video and BAM, mower running again like it's brand new. Keep up this great series.
You're welcome!
