Another aspect to that is by holding fire until they were so close they would be more accurate, offsetting the lower musketeers. The short range also shortened the time between a volley of rounds ripping into enemy ranks and them receiving a charge., giving less time for them to regroup mentally.
Commonwealth: I fear no infantry. But that discipline... It scares me. (For a time Sweden was the only power that could withstand a hussar charge without severely outnumbering them)

we had a good conscription system and we had an army that was pretty filled with veterans, we kinda fell out of power when we started taking losses we couldn't replenish with experienced soldiers because of our low population. so ye we did good but it the clock was ticking, we would have needed to grab more populus and economically viable land and then hold and stabilize our grip on it while diplomatically fending off whatever we pissed off to take the land if we wanted to actually stay more relevant. hard to do when we had kings that didn't know when we had won enough and kept fighting depleting our ability to hold newly taken land

A misunderstanding I often find: caroleans is not really a kind of "special forces" unit (like for instance the black watch for GB) but rather a term describing the imperial Swedish infantrymen in total after carolus'/karls (I think) army reform
Caroleans, a unit i used in Civ 6 when playing as Sweden and oh boy let me tell you they were a unstoppable force even against industrial age units. But i lost as Sweden because the A.I won a Diplomatic victory.
I know that feeling. You get so far, just to have an AI win because they voted for two points for themselves. I nearly lost a domination victory, as I took Colombia's capital the turn before the voting.
I tend to disable the victory types I'm not going for. It happened to me that I won cultural when going for science and then religious when going domination. It gets annoying.

I go for domination, the world fears me so much that I end up getting what I want in terms of attack bonuses. I remember being in a war against Russia and Poland as Georgia, and still getting the diplomacy.

Cavalry wasn't scary to a well disciplined group of pikemen, which is why the Spanish tercio was the ultimate fighting force of its time. A tightly packed box of bare minimum two pikemen with pikes down would run through any Cavalry dumb enough to charge, which is why heavy shock Cavalry like French heavy knights or cataphracts died and was replaced by more agile hussars, mobile infantry dragons and Cavalry was relegated to mop up duty after the enemy morale was broken. Look at the final battle of the film Alatriste, its final scene is the best representation of both pike and shot and the tercio in its twilight years

An animal gets burned once and will never do it again, a human will burn themselves multiple times just to spite somebody. This guys weren't just professional drilled soldiers, they were disciplined zealots, combine the undying morale of a zealot with the discipline of a soldier and you get someone that will frighten even the most disciplined soldiers, you can't reason with them, you can only run or fight, and somewhat that high on adrenaline isn't going down in one shot unless it's a head shot, and you are more likely to nail the dog back home than hit a moving target with a smoothbore
