During the great northern war the Swedish empire fielded around 60'000 cavalry men, 120'000 soldiers in total, at peak strength (1707).
The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth never reached 60'000 soldiers in total at any point.
Also most armies at this time in history had around 20% soldiers being cavalry in comparison to the Swedish ~50%

These soldiers came from a tribal culture in military aspects, the swedish Vikings were known for brutality in hand-to-hand combat, and sometimes as a last breath, they tend to go into an end-of-life frenzy (Berserkers), place them in the standardized organization of Grenadiers, and you have an insane soldier on the battlefield.

    • @thatonejoey1847

Cavalry wasn't scary to a well disciplined group of pikemen, which is why the Spanish tercio was the ultimate fighting force of its time.
A tightly packed box of bare minimum two pikemen with pikes down would run through any Cavalry dumb enough to charge, which is why heavy shock Cavalry like French heavy knights or cataphracts died and was replaced by more agile hussars, mobile infantry dragons and Cavalry was relegated to mop up duty after the enemy morale was broken.
Look at the final battle of the film Alatriste, its final scene is the best representation of both pike and shot and the tercio in its twilight years

@@thatonejoey1847 okay thanks. It's just, i feel like a heavy cavalry charge should also be enough to break their nerve if a bayonet charge can

    • @thatonejoey1847

@@aniruddhbhatkal1834 it's quite simple. Soldiers are taught that a horse will never get too close, they are smart creatures that will run away from the pikes when they get too close and get poked.
An animal gets burned once and will never do it again, a human will burn themselves multiple times just to spite somebody.
That's why the caroleans Ga pa (their fighting doctrine) was so crushing at places like Narva, to rip off sabaton
      "Taking orders from the heavens
Through hostile fire they will march
      Unaffected by the volleys
Facing death their faith will keep their fear at bay"
This guys weren't just professional drilled soldiers, they were disciplined zealots, combine the undying morale of a zealot with the discipline of a soldier and you get someone that will frighten even the most disciplined soldiers, you can't reason with them, you can only run or fight, and somewhat that high on adrenaline isn't going down in one shot unless it's a head shot, and you are more likely to nail the dog back home than hit a moving target with a smoothbore
