- Dave Dunipace is the co-founder and president of Innova Champion Discs. In 1983, he designed the first mold specifically made for disc golf, the Eagle, and has been responsible for every major advancement in disc technology since. He knows the ins and outs of throwing technique, can tell you more about disc design than anyone on the planet, and lived through the history that brought our sport to where it is today. We sat down with Dave to answer some of your questions from “what’s the best disc for a one disc round?” to “what molds are still missing from the Innova lineup?”

21:17 Thanks for Watching! - Спорт
I believe the woods is the great equalizer in disc golf. Scramble shots are my favorite to watch. It requires far more technique than just bombing drives. Distance drives are far more rewarding to watch when there are obstacles involved. Watching players struggle or succeed based on their lines is one of the most rewarding aspects of disc golf to me. Getting through a line of guardians with ease is one of the most satisfying parts of the game to me.
I loved this!!! Like a history lesson also. So disappointed when I realized it was over. Thanks a lot Dave, hopefully we can get more. Love all y'all at Innova!!!😎🇺🇸
I absolutely love these videos with Dave it’s so awesome and interesting hearing from him
I could listen to him all day!
I love the Viper. Please make a batch!
Hi Dave,
The 40th Anniversary Halo Aero was a fine choice. But it floats a bit more than my DX Aero. The new R-Pro flies much like the DX. While I enjoy the R-Pro it gets beat up too quickly for a disc that’s going to hit some trees. Please give the Aero the honor it deserves and make it in Nexus. Having it in Nexus will keep it flying straight longer, the way it was intended to fly :)
I still have my 20 something year old classic roc and use it for long putts and shorter approach shots. It's still a great disc. Love it. Chef's kiss.
Question for Dave:
What are the velocities assigned to each speed rank?
And what are projected/expected flight distances?
I would love for it to be a standardized metric between brands. From the disc design you speak of perceiving changes in early and late flight characteristics and torque resistance, I would love to know those qualities specifically because I know the gaps that need to be filled in my bag!
I LOVE these one on one's highlighting Mr. Dave. Dang, to play some disc golf with him would be one for the books.
Star pig coming ever?
It already exists
I want a halo pig actually! 😂
@@jerebere19 make it stock.
Halo pig would be sick
I've only seen glow/pro and R-pro pigs and the sun dried vibes version, that's xt or nexus I think??
Very practical communication to disc golf through experiential, temporal expression. Appreciate the video, thank you Dave!
Saw you at my local course in Riverside a few months ago and being a new player I didn't know how much an impact you have made in the industry. Wish I could have said hello and thank you for creating my first starter set and getting me into this game.
Thank you for the awesome discs and amazing plastic!!
One of my biggest regrets is not meeting Dave Dunipace at 1999 World's in Rochester, NY, I was going to have him sign my small diameter 3 speed Roc.
When he wasn't playing, he was always in a conversation with multiple people, I just couldn't seem to catch him at the right time 😄🤷.
At least I still had an opportunity to watch the legend play, so that's pretty cool👍.
Beat disc golf series on the internets for real! I always knew the Hawkeye was the FD!
Dave keepin it real with the woods vs open course debate.
Yeah I get what he's saying but have to disagree
Dave always makes me put more Innova back in the bag. Thinking I need to try a Jay.
I thought my IG questions went unheard.......JACKED to hear my questions being answered unexpectedly.....THANKS JEFF & DAVE !!!!!!
Pretty sure the game Dave was talking about when he said "Samath" is Metroid and the character's name is Samus
ton of gold here...def keep this guy talking
Thanks Dave!!! And thanks Innova!!
I love Dave so much
I play in the woods in Indiana, and I am SO EXCITED to get a few champion vipers in my bag!! Hands down the best Forest disc imo.
Millennium Moab is a champ viper
Long time Innova thrower. Went from the Monster to Boss to Firestorm for my go-to power forehand disc. And I gotta say...LOVE the Firestorm. Has so much control on low trajectory shots, and good turnover capacity on higher flex lines.
Do you like the market for Firestorm and feel like its gonna stick around? Or should I just buy a dozen and sit on em?
Can't wait for some firm champion vipers. I still bag vipers because nothing does the same thing as them. I was happy to get a star one when there was a run of those on the proshop I use it at least once every round. I once thought I was the only one that still likes vipers but it seems they sell out really fast every time a run appears. been very happy to see cobras being run in plastics other than DX lately too!
kc -pro glow shark with the dx stamp. ..that's my dream disc.. even a glox dx shark run would be cool. when was last run of glow sharks?
This is great.
Loved the insights. Was really interesting. Hmm if i could ask a question i guess i would ask how good does a player need be to be sponsored by a manufacturer? What is the sight of the manufacturer on sponsoring basically?
I have to disagree with the idea that Disc Golf should evolve away from the woods because “woods golf is Frisbee Golf”. First of all, Frisbee Golf is Disc Golf. This is true because they are essentially the same game; Frisbee Golf is just shorter because the discs don’t go as far. You invented the bevel edge disc because you wanted the discs to go farther. You are a distance champion. It is clear that you privilege distance. But longer throwing discs and the longer courses required for them don’t essentially make it more of a sport.
Yes, discs made specifically for Disc Golf resulted in being able to throw more lines easily, as well as being able to throw farther. So, the playing of the game changed, arguably for the better, but you’re still throwing discs into a basket in the required number of throws while navigating varying terrain and obstacles, and that’s the game. As long as the discs fly decently well in the existing weather conditions, it doesn’t matter what discs are used as long as there is relative parity. Either way it is still fun, competitive, and challenging in the same ways.
People like long throws, but most players like the greater challenge of woods golf. Many pros prefer courses like Milo McIver, Northwood Black, and Maple Hill. Many pros say R. W. Jackson is their favorite course. Some courses may have too many trees, but woods golf is fluky for everyone playing in the same way. If a fluke happens, it is because that is where it was thrown. They think it is a fluke because it may be a obstacle they didn’t anticipate. Everyone has an equal chance to throw it into an out stretched tree limb and into the woods. That means scrambling is an essential part of the game. People loving see the great shot pros make when in a difficult lie. All the best pros can scramble.
So, fluke shots in Disc Golf do not discriminate. Moreover, rarely does a true act of chance happen where a condition actually changed from what it was previously. Flukes happen in Disc Golf because the courses are more natural than other sports. I think that is one of the aspects that makes Disc Golf special and different from other sports. At the same time, Disc Golf does not need to be more like ball golf or any other sport in order for it to be better. Remember the wise words of Stancil Johnson, “When a ball dreams, it dreams it was a Frisbee.” Disc Golf is special because of the way a disc flys. Let Disc Golf be Disc Golf. Don’t try to change it into something you think it should be based on what other sports are. That is what will diminish disc golf in the long run.
Yes, courses not being spectator friendly is a problem. But when it gets crowded spectators can never be in position to see all the shots. Ball golf has the same problem, and the solution is the same: Courses need to be designed with spectators in mind. When playing woods golf people will just have to accept that there will be a few more shots that they won’t be able to see live.
The OG
Please explain the history of the hands aviar please? My first real putter 1986ish. Thanks
This is some great disc golf nerdery!👏🧝♂🙌🥏🧙♂🌳
I want to know his thoughts on the public hate for the groove. Does he consider it a flop?
Why were new molds made for the Rat, Jay, and Wombat 3? Were they for improvements, or changes for the sake of differentiation from similar molds? Thank you.
what were the new molds?
Question: Is the "King Cobra" actually the same mold as a regular Cobra, but in Champion plastic and the name and flight number change was because the concept of different plastic changing stability was relatively new?
my favorite approach & putter is a champion Spider. any plans on bringing that back? did the Jay replace it?
Thanks Innova and Thanks Dave!
"Samuth or whatever" = Samus = Metroid
Is there an uncut version of this interview? I'm only a minute in and I feel like he had a lot more to say that was taken out of his answers.
Great interview. My question is; What relationship, if any did Dave and Innova have with original Frisbee manufacturer, Wham-o?
Secondies! Yay Dave!
Dave has spoken!
Right now the Dark Rebel is my favorite Fairway driver. Are they turning into Hawkeyes?
It's an FD if your new to the game
@@johnnydarter yup. Aware of that. Dave just hinted at the two being the same disc. Wondering if the DR will disappear. Great disc
@@gfunktuba1 I'm sure Dave wanted to remind Jussi/Discmania of who's in charge when it comes to producing discs. I get where their both coming from but at some point, each side had to move on from one another.
I love the control of the Condor.. and nothing rolls like my Jaguar.. would live to see a Champ Glo Condor or Jaguar
Yea I love my condor for throwing through heavy brush to get to the basket. Breaks tree limbs and branches with ease, being 200 grams
This was great! Dave clarifies many things about Disc Golf that are unclear.
But “scoober” (which is what Brodie is saying as opposed to “scoobie”) is an Ultimate term that refers to a quick break force throw, thrown with two fingers upside down from the left side of the head (for a right handed player)over the right shoulder of the marker using the wrist and forearm. Thanks for explaining the Disc Golf terms of Scoobie and two finger Pancake throw.
Driver Pro is probably my favorite plastic from any brand because it doesn't take forever to beat in, doesn't gouge like DX, and feels better to me than DX, XT, and KC Pro. R-Pro is nice too. I always have my eye out for Pro Thunderbirds, Wraiths, and Destroyers. If I could get Gators, Rocs, Roc3s, Teebirds, and Eagles in Driver Pro I would buy a lot of them. I'd also like to see the Banshee make a comeback.
Can you make some champion, star and gstar discs with the classic DX stamps please?
Would Innova consider making the Cheetah in plastics besides DX and Star?
What’s the closest disc to the Des Reading Stingray?
Aww my homie DD is blazed up for the qna
I love the Daedalus. What were the goals when making it? How did it come about?
I throw a star Daedalus and it's the straightest long distance driver in my bag. Flies like a buzz but way farther
Hands down the best driver i have. I love it.
Any plans to get on par with MVP and Latitude64 in the glow department?
If I was asked who I would like to play a round with it would be Mr. Dave Dunipace. I bought my first Innova in 1985, an Eagle, a few years later adding a Stingray and a Scorpion (lost the Scorpion 3 years ago, very sad). Still bagging all Innova (except for one Latitude 64 Dagger that I use in the rain to putt with due to its stickiness). My all around go-to disc? Valkyrie, even for windy putting.
That would be sweet to play it round with Dave!
Can we get a CFR run of Banshee? Any plastic other than DX.
Any plans for nexus rocs?
Appreciate the videos. My question is what is the best disc or speed for a beginner to
learn the hyser flip?
You Hyzer flip discs that are understable or neutral stability.
Wish they'd make Classic Rocs again, the original stable approach disc before we knew that was what we wanted.
Can't say I agree with Dave about how disc golf should become more like golf. If I wanted that, I would just watch golf.
Much agreed. I think what hes going after is that it really isn’t in our control. Some people will always prefer woods or mixed play and there will be those who will be more drawn to field play.
How are you personally involved with Innova setting the industry pace for finding, sponsoring, providing discs, creative, and team support for the largest growing disc golf segment - women? And why are you so behind the in the functional/durable apparel game as well? Why isn't there a blizzard shryke?
Did you ever make a beadless colt?
What happened to Starlight plastic?
Are there multiple ways to throw nose down?
Question for Dave: what do you think will be the new technology, that'll change the game one's again? A "catch all" basket or a disc that can fly over 800ft easily etc.
What about the IT??
Please don’t stop making star corvettes they are criminally underrated
They are so flippy but go a long ways.
Can you make a beaded dart?
Why does Innova manufacture high speed discs in DX plastic?
Cause noobs buy them
Every experienced player knows new players shouldn't be throwing high speed drivers. The Innova starter set doesn't include a distance driver.
Other than selling newer (and usually less informed) players discs they shouldn't be throwing, is there a purpose to mass producing DX distance drivers?h
I've seen pros carry them, usually the destroyer, and usually they always say it is strictly their roller disc. As for more casual players it's mainly a way to minimize the molds in your bag without having to go possibly years to break a disc in. You can have a champion plastic as your overstable version, and then have a new dx as a straighter version, and another dx version that has been beaten in for turnovers/rollers.
I'll disagree with one thing. Woods golf. It's the best.
Best courses in the world are wooded courses. Look at Milo
TRUTH 🙂
Where’s the clarification to the changes made to the star and champion, and g-star plastics? Huge omission is this video, we need more transparency please!
Im rooting for the Halo Pig for Robbie C!
Why isnt Ken Climo doing stuff like this.
Flat, stiff Halo pigs would be a dream come true
I want a return of the Gremlin with the dimpled top
Champion hammer PLEASE!!!!
Samus metroid prime :)
Love Dave, love Innova. I do disagree with him about wooded vs open courses though. The best type of disc golf is tightly wooded. I don't care if you can't get a massive crowd there to watch or it might be hard to capture on video, open courses are boring. One angle shots are boring. Hyzers are boring. Precision, scrambling, and creativity are fun and fun to watch.
Can we please get the Firebird3? I am really tires of ordering firebirds and recieving really domey straight ones, if we had the firebird and firebird3(flattop) it would be alot easier for customers buying online” and i can almost guarantee that the firebird3 will outsell the firebird by aloooooooooot, thanks
I think the millennium draco was this specifically, or FAF runs of firebirds (flat as f***)
Infinite Scepter is basically this, infinite themselves described it as "using the firebird mold with a flat top process"
Buddha!! ❤
Funny Mr. Mcbeth hates ball golf courses so much he takes vacations when the pro tour goes to ball golf courses. I gotta agree with him. Ball golf disc golf courses are a bad idea and if Dave ends up being right that disc golf is going to evolve into more of a ball golf setting RIP disc golf for me, ball golf courses are boring af, all distance with little to no strategy needed. Throwing through the woods is what sets disc golf and ball golf apart. Not to mention when your disc golfing your enjoying nature, when your ball golfing theres nothing natural about, its basically a military haircut, sir yes sir. If you cant throw 500 or more theres no way you could ever make it as a pro throwing on a ball golf course. Btw great video Dave oh and im still calling my thumber a thumber, unless your a local they call my thumber a thumbergod!
I disagree. Keep woods golf alive. I have the most fun playing woods golf. Its also a riot to watch. Im not sure what he's talking about 😂
Plz release a halo rat plz
You should make a halo pig 🐷 and some factory second chargers
Why not bring back the Tee-rex
Can we get the pig in other plastics
Cant find the alien anywhere
Lol just got dropped and now I have it
That's silly to say Frisbee golf is not disc golf and not a sport.
Golf ball courses are boring ,its a fact that a normal person that learns how to throw can yank overstable high speed disc at this state of the game.
Today disc golfers rely to much on overstable disc losing the art of shape-shifting shots.
It's luck to throw a disc clean in the woods but it's better then having OB everywhere and players throwing high celling shots that go completely over to avoid the difficulty of the hole design.
Wooded courses reduces the wind which makes each player have the same advantages with drives and putting unlike golf ball courses.
The more athletes become bigger and stronger higher speed disc will be made and courses will continue to get longer and everyone will believe that disc golf is getting better which isn't true.
Golf ball courses it's not positive evolution.
It’s a preference thing. People like different things. I prefer mixed play and wood courses also.
Dave has got his head in the clouds again
When he said Jesus and he said why do they think they're so great. Well I think maybe because Jesus was literally God in the human flesh. Completely sinless to take our punishment of death which is sin. That could be a reason
💯
21:00 "disc golf is not in the woods, too much scrambling" sorry hard disagree
ask dave: yeah, my question is why is Dave Dunipace so greedy and controlling???? also, why doesnt he step down and away from Innova so that they can actually thrive again as a brand and so that they can contribute to the sport instead of being a constant cancer to our sport of disc golf?? all completely valid questions!
😬yikes😅
Innova, I’m sorry, but your marketing is absolutely horrible, PLEASE stop centering everything around Dave. Sheesh!
Special run of Champion Spiders would be highly sought after.
Oooooo!! Those were sweet!
