Who doesn't want to throw farther? Dave Dunipace, co-founder and president of Innova, shares a key component of getting more distance on your throws-the Tip of the Whip.
I kept straining my shoulder and getting inflammation until I watched this video and realized I was throwing completely wrong! I was muscling the disc! Now I throw 50 ft to 100 ft further and injury free! Thanks Dave! You're the man!
What exactly did you change after watching this video? I don't deal with a ton of soreness, just the usual amount for being 42, just trying to figure out a way to add some speed and power to my throws. I feel like the biggest issue I have is that I feel like I'm not following through enough. Most of the high level players that I've seen usually finish with their left shoulder forward, sometimes facing their throwing target. I feel like I end up my release with my body facing forward and my throwing arm directly out to the side. I'm doing what many would call 'short arming' my throws. Common sense would tell me to just find a way to pivot more during my throw, but when I make a conscious effort to do so I completely throw off line, usually releasing late and pulling the disc way right of target. A lot of people describe throwing a disc much like snapping a towel or cranking a lawnmower but frankly I never feel like I get either of those when I throw and I'm not sure what to change to get that type of snap or action.
Every time I see a video with this man in it, I can't help but feel like I'm hearing from the great and powerful OZ. I wish there was a Dunipace Channel just to listen to his stories and hear all the cool wisdoms he might share. Seeing this pop up on my recommended made my whole day, thank you, sir. Ps, I'mma go out and crack that whip, sir. Respect for the next level graphics, the really help to understand.
Seeing someone lay this out in an easy to use and understand graphic makes it so much easier. I will have to watch this a few dozen times to fully comprehend it, but it was a great video.
Well Dave, you have nailed this topic in so many ways. I listened to your advise 20+ years ago and developed a "riding a bike" style of throw that provides consistent power and accuracy. With today's disc technology, I am throwing (Innova plastic) further every day.
After over thirty years of playing, and more recently studying the pros on you tube, I just wanted a top down view of what they were doing on their drives. Now I see your video and it confirms what I was suspecting. It isn't grip, or reaching back, or proper foot placement, that I wasn't doing correctly. It was the whip! It is why my forehand way out drives my back hand with ease. Time to get out to the course and use this new knowledge. From one old veteran to another, thanks!!!
Such good advise. It’s helped me so much in my game, and how my body feel afterwards. Wish I would of watched this when I learned to throw, save me three years of poor disc golf.
Wow soo insightful thanks Dave!! I love the body graphics... About every 3 months or when I hit a point where I'm just not getting any better I go back to these kind of videos and just take it in so that I'm more cautious about stuff like this! Thanks!!!
I disagree, as I had a hard time deciphering what the last, uniquely green point in the birds eye view was supposed to represent. I couldn’t tell where the player’s hand ended and the disc began; the shades of gray were too similar. I get the concept though now, ya high has taken me a couple years worth of getting the sling effect down first. For me this whip effect works with mid ranges and only one specific driver: a Westside Seer. Otherwise, I am perfectly happy and satisfied throwing my Banshees and Leopards with a sling pivot, but that’s just me. All in all, I think the graphics are a great effort too, but if only it had more resolution! No amount of brightening my monitor helped and I’m not colorblind either.
I learned this late 2018 and have since been throwing 50-100 feet further on average. I saw how rick really keeps the disc close and picked it up from him.
Love the overhead grayish colored graphic! Nice. And good video! I don't feel like I have any "whip" or "snap" to my release. I'm curious about the part where you said that the wrist stops. I'll be toying with that when I get back out there! Thank you! : )
I finally understood what snap/whip was tonight while in the field. I was really trying to force the disc out with power instead of relaxing and letting my arm "uncoil" for lack of a better word. Now i just need to fix footwork and timing.
I think I got it! Be slow on the pull forward and when your at the pwer pocket and turning then go faster. Not at the beginning of the pull but near the end. What a different feel, and I don't feel back pain that I used to when I would try to tighten uo and rip so hard at the beginning of the pull. Massive game changer.
Very good. I like the graphical technique of evaluating the "whip", ie. showing it at slow and normal speed. Having that information can help deduce "whip" speed, or "tip" speed. So if the arm reachback and arm speed coming through aren't the most important thing, and the whip speed is, can't we analyze some of the top thrower from an above view, as seen here, and determine the whip speed of the top throwers? That my friend, would be some pretty good fodder.
YESSSSS. Thank you. This is gonna be huge for me. I've been throwing drivers with my hand basically as far away from my body as it would be if i threw a baseball lol
Norman Wall you’re wrong the reach back is essential for max distance throws. Look at all the pros now a days. Extending your arm all the way back gets your hips and head turned back further, thus generating way more torque when you rip the disc.
Informative and Great explanation, Innova Tive:) im curious how you broke down the whip component in the end and how you figured it adds mph from 60 and up:) videos like these are gold for Innova fans:)
The level of sass Dave has when talking about “reach back” kills me haha this is def an intermediate to advanced technique btw. This should only be introduced AFTER solid fundamentals are cemented into your form. 8 months ago i decided to try this and it made my form even worse. After correcting A LOT of bad habits and having solid fundamentals, i started using this “tip” (lol) and immediately noticed the disc having acceleration out of my hand.
I use both sling and whip. Once you reach back it’s like a rubber band until you hit the power pocket, it becomes a whip and cracks after you pull your hips through
This is some good stuff! I've been playing 4 yrs this month and my farthest throw is 390' With this technique hopefully I can get in the 400' plus club fairly soon! Good vid!👍
Stand up straight and rotate your hips back and forth, to your left and then to your right and repeat. If your arms are relaxed they will flail around. Transfer your weight from trail to lead foot and rotate your hips. With some rhythm you can whip your own hand in front of you. That's all it is. It's not about muscling anything. It's about creating seperation between your lower body and your upper body (winding up) and unwinding like a coil.
Should i focus on my hips or will my shoulders dictate what my hips should be doing. Or is it the opposite? Should my hips dictate what my shoulder are doing?
