Wow, I was taken by surprise when he talked about how his anxiety got so bad his mom had to sleep with him in the same bed. The reason is because when I experienced anxiety for the first time, it was so sudden and shocking. You don't have a warning. No one really ever told me what anxiety was really like. The cruel intricate pain one can feel throughout their body, is so real, painful, and scary, I don't think anyone will truly ever understand that unless they experience a panic attack themselves. I became an absolute shell of a person, who could barely drive, be around noise, or even read because palpitations ruled over my day. I couldn't even fall asleep and if I managed to, the anxiety was so strong I would wake up from the panic attack. I was literally having panic attacks in my sleep. And having to go on that journey of accepting that it is your mental health and not some actual disease, is very difficult. You are convinced that you have something that will kill you. You are convinced something is wrong with your lungs. Whatever it is. It just becomes all you think about because you're in survival mode. You can't even be your normal self because your nervous system has gone out of whack and can't go back to what it was on its own anymore. I started to sleep with my mom to have a sense of safety and I will be forever grateful that someone loved me so much that they were able to see me at my WORST and be there, without any judgement and just love. It was truly, the worst few months of my life and I tear up when I think about it. I wouldn't wish anxiety like this on anyone. The brain is so powerful I don't think people know it. I am still trying to recoup ever since those days, and both my body and brain is not the same. I have learned to live with the random chest pains, palpitations, or whatever else. But I am grateful to hear celebrities talk about things with such vulnerability. It hit me so deeply, Lewis

I’m old (52) I had anxiety since I was a child. Only one of my sons got that gene… I can say, it can be overcome. We both also had suicidal ideation peaking in young adulthood. My son had zero impulse control as a child, so I couldn’t really have friends, we had to mostly homeschool him. Long story short, we both figured out how to survive our brains. Today I have an amazing career, my dream marriage to my patient loving husband, my dream life. My son is almost 29, he’s incredibly successful, with a loving woman, and a brilliant career. My son - who had so many issues with his feelings, with relationships and social stuff…is doing so well his work is on Netflix. I won’t brag too much, but, just to say, love conquers all. Never give up on yourself, never give up on your kids. Some people are nervous cats. It’s ok. There are many things that can help, but most of all, stay on the planet because things smooth out as you age. ❤

I’ve never seen this podcast before but I looked up crippling anxiety because I’ve been having panic attacks for the last 24 hours. This is helping to ground me as I type this. A thing that people don’t realize about crippling anxiety is that when you start having an anxiety attack it can easily explode into a panic attack and give you this idea in your head that everything is out of control and too far gone and your life is going to fail and nothing is recoverable, which leads you to feeling like you’re going to die for certain. The scary part is this can happen in minutes and last for hours and coming out of it is the most emotionally and physically exhausting task of that day.

Focusing on breathing, or having your mom around simply teaches the brain that's how it works. Much like PTSD. You're not going to die. Eventually, you stop triggering your flight and fight responses. No more adrenaline being pumped in when you don't expect it. Also, work on your health. Nutrition is one of the biggest factors. So I met with my psych teacher about it and he said, “so you’re saying you legit feel like you may be nuts?
    I said, “yep”
He said, “well, good news is, you’re fine cuz people who are losing their minds- don’t know it”
    And voila…
    He cured me.
‘Never had a real mental issue since.
Other than the common break down here and there.

Its so true. I worried my whole life that I would go nuts....funny thing was that it did happen, but I didnt know and it was fantastic, as I had a manic episode (the opposite of depression)
