I have a decent amount of cables of various types, mainly for instruments, that I use and some not as of yet. Have found some by luck at thrift stores including a 15' long Mogami instrument cable that I paid around $8 for. Also, a Harley Benton 2x12 V30 cabinet for $50. Thrifting is the best!

Buy a decent soldering station and learn to solder. Buy a 100 meter roll of decent cable and Neutrik jacks and xlr’s. That way you’ll be able to make your own. Make standard lengths 1m, 3M,…
Color code your cables to length. I also use different colours of Velcro for different sorts of cables. Black for power, red xlr, orange for multi’s,…
Then again I’m a cable nerd as an ex live sound engineer who used to have 100 cables and more for every production.

Ha. This is awesome! I think there are quite a few people that need to watch this. My Amazon cart “saved for later” is full of cables and adapters. I just got a new computer and only had to get a few new cables and one adapter. I’ve been building my cable collection over the past year and learned to solder too.

Cables are essential, i only buy quality Cordial and Sommer cables in high quantities.
Because compared to the rest of my rig it's still cheap to have 500€ in spare cables. In case one stops working or i'm setting up my rig somewhere else i need them.
Colors help: green is fx-send, blue is fx-return, purple is XLR, grey is speaker cable,...

Wir hatten es ja auch zufällig gerade erst von Kabeln...
Btw. I bought my Sommer Spirit XXL about 15 years ago. Great cable, still working, still no noise issues and with it's low capacitance it doesn't kill the treble.

This has proven true for me in the extreme. I’ve had a room full of musicians have to stop playing so we could move an amp or hunt for some cable long enough. So many times. But plenty of cables and keep them organized.

I add strings, picks, or cables to orders when I need to reach a threshold for free delivery. I have enough strings for all my guitars to the end of next year. 2 of my cables went missing and another died. I didn't bother looking for the missing ones or soldering the dead one because I still have 5 cables. I have so many patches and power supply leads that I made 3 pedalboards, each targeting a specific genre. They each have their own power supply so I just plug one in when I want to use it.

I have seen people going to gigs with just the bare minimum needed, in spite of warnings, and signs of imminent failure during rehearsals.
You can imagine how that went sometimes.
Have spares, and spares for those if possible.

Here's another free tip: When you discover that a cable has a short or is busted, throw it away *right now* . Don't toss it back into your box of cables, because you *will* forget to repair that cable later, and instead in 6 months from now you'll waste another hour of troubleshooting the same cable again.

    • @Moselblues
      @Moselblues 3 дні тому +1

Another pro tip, if Our discover a mechanically issue with the cable, cut it at the suspicious position. So you won't use it again. Then, take some time in the Winter and repair it. E.g. make a shorter cable out of longer broken one. Don't throw everything away

You failed to mention that I need to get a big tool cabinet with heavy duty drawers, and it is the exact solution for the problem I am dealing with today, aside from needing more cables to fill the drawers. (I just realized that with more wire, I can run the old A rig in parallel with the new B rig. Because more!)

That’s why, when Blue Guitar’s AmpX is released, I’ll switch completely to digital. I’m tired of having cables everywhere. I want a pedal that does everything: serves as an amp, handles effects, and at the same time is simple to use. This is what’s stopping me from chasing competitors like Quad Cortex, Line 6, etc. I really can’t wait for their amp to come out.
Competitors are to complexe and you can’t connect directly to a good old passive cabinets without an external amp

Where can you get those little white labels you can put what it's going to on your cable that are heat shrieked. Just use a blow dryer to shrink it on to your cable for your send return act.

3:19 exactly I asked for patch cables for my rack, I received several 2 meter cables 😮, I ended up buying a bunch of phono jacks and cut them into made to fit cables so it actually all fit in the case!
HP is right just put a few assorted cables in with whatever else your ordering. And I’ll add learn to make your own, or at least fix the ones with issues.
Lables lables lables!!!!! So you know which cable is which!!!! Adapters too!

Luckily, I've done an apprentice (Radio- & Fernsehtechniker) at a broadcast TV studio. We have done (almost) all of our cables on our own, tailored to the required lengths and application. So I'm still doing it for me. Have here some spools of Belden cables and a big box of various Neutrik plugs. So I can solder my cables as needed. Maybe it's not cheaper, but faster and much more flexible. (Ok, I wouldn't do a USBC or HDMI cable by my own😂). So my advice, learn to solder and get raw material instead of buying every possible length/combinationin advance.

I always add a couple of guitar and patch cables with any order… Cordial are a brand i like! And alway a couple of packs of strings! Would hurt so much to have to pay €7 for strings and €15 shipping 😢… My son is playing guitar now, so all those extra guitars, cables, amps, pedals etc were the right decision! I still haven’t convinced my wife though 😂

While I am carefull with the quantity-argument, I can only agree with the quality-of-cables argument. Sure, cheap one can du the job in many cases, but usually the more expensive ones are going to last way longer. I made the mistake as a teen to only buy the cheapest cables Music Store had at the time and these things were breaking down on a regular basis. Once I got a more expensive one I suddendly had a worry less. Considering how long I use the more expensive ones and how many times I would have replaced a cheaper one I also already saved much money buying expensive.

Even better is to buy bulk 2 and 3 conductor instrument cable, a bag of each type of connector, and make your own custom length cables as you need them. Much cheaper, and you can buy as cheap or as high quality components as you want. Learn to solder, kids!

Did something else, found this video, now I'm adding cables I probably don't need to my cart.

1.) Why is the guitar cable selection at Thomann so sparse????
2.) I also didn't find the sommer cables you showed with these nice (non neutrik) silent plugs????

Same thing with Harddisks right? I am sure you get a lot of backups, to Harddrives of videos, and many other things... It's surprising harddrives still being used, and actually they cost still kind of a lot. When you want to buy 5TB above harddrives... They break so easily.

Buying und having enough cable of all kinds is essential to what we do. But collecting cables always ends in a big mess even after I once have sorted and categorized them. I wish I had a kind of „replicator“ that could produce the cable i want with the plugs at the end on demand when I actually need them. Is there a genius out there who can build such a machine?! 🤓😎🙏🏻👏🏻
