And in the end, when they finally accept that they don't know or understand and they just want it put behind them, they are merely lost, as it has defined them for so long. We are all slaves to our past. I think this episode is gonna age like a fine wine.
Ok since no one is saying it I will. You sir are the intelligent side of the Rick and Morty Viewers. Great Observation and it was so good I almost screenshot it. Then I realized that it technically wasn’t helpful. 😂
Exploring Ricks backstory is something interesting and something Everyone would love to see but not every episode maybe a few here and there every season or so
Can we just appreciate that we have an adult animation that actually focuses on making comedy for the fans and takes it time to release quality content? Reminds me of Futurama a lot
I'm just glad the show finally has episodes where Rick is not invincible, called out by the characters around him, and framed in the wrong. The more episodes that expose his weaknesses the better. If someone is too invincible, and can easily get out of any situation, then there's no tension or investment.
I dunno if a character is always on top that can still be fun if they have a cool diverse skillset. What I always loved about Rick and Morty is you never know what he'll pull out next.
I feel like it is the perfect development of rick. At season one, he knew that, no matter what he does, he won't care. He had a daughter that welcomes him even after so much time, he had morty who was with him no matter what. Now, as characters changed rick is much more alone. He finnaly have to face the consequences of his actions. And he don't want to run away. Take, for example season one. Even if he literally destroyed the world, he could just go to another (episode with love potion for morty). Now, he sees how he can no longer escape. Or just don't want to. I think it's finnaly time for rick to have his development as well
@@papabird4425 Superman doesn't suck. People just don't read his comics. Honestly it's a fallacy that an OP character can't be fun. In fact the fun of Rick was what device he was going to pull out to win with next and that he was always in control. It made for fun escapism since we all want that sense of complete control over a situation. If you want to say but then there's no stakes I'd say it really comes down to the creativity of how he wins and the humor. That's the appeal.
Rick & Morty is a show about a guy who does what he wants because he does not care. Actually fleshing out his backstory would be completely missing the point.
@@schwarzerritter5724 That makes zero sense and narratively is simply pretentiously wrong. The show has shown there’s clearly a reason the daring scientist Rick is now an alcoholic nihilist. He wasn’t always this way, he’s not the same Rick Beth grew up with.
I literally face palmed when morty was just tossing this technology away and leaving it behind like wtf dude. This is how to prematurely advance a civilization. You should never prematurely advance a civilization
True. It's sweet how Beth has gotten over her daddy issues and seems to have a lot more empathy and compassion. And Jerry seems to be both developing more of a backbone, and not being insecure about who he is as a person.
@@flowerhobi1673 I mean seriously it’s awesome. He may be the smartest/best but he’s still human with flaws. And to me the point of the show was him coming back into his family’s life so that they show him his flaws indirectly so he can work on himself. That’s literally character development and it makes Rick more relatable and cool.
I feel like the show is totally over the turmoil and production troubles in the wake of it’s mainstream explosion during Season 3. I’m excited to see where the show goes next.
@@twxvybeatz5796 same, it was definitely firing on all cylinders, although unlike season 1, I really like how both Summer and Morty have become capable enough to have their own distinct adventures in the margins too. There’s a lot you can do with that, and Morty solving problems on his own (or creating them) is always entertaining for me.
"Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion" is one of the names of the future episodes which obviously refers to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Excited to see where that goes!
Wow I actually cannot wait for that. Especially as someone who has always preferred Rahxephon for my existential mecha fix, I really wanna see how they’re going to make fun of it.
The whole point of rick interrupting Mr Nimbus was the creators telling the audience to shut up about looking to into rick's background. It's not deep, it's not profound... it's rick and morty.
I think they were some kind of hybrid hahahaha they have dog face shapes and noses, but cow horns and they're fucking blue so yeah, def not a species we can identify
4:05 I think this is actually the case considering that at the end of the episode after the credits when Beth, Jerry, and Mr. Nimbus are about to have a threeway Beth says that Rick wouldn't understand to which Nimbus replies "Yes he would"
Its great that there hasn't been another "Beth & Jerry fight" subplot again ever since the start of Season 4. That character development is actually sticking
Shame they didn’t keep the “fuck death i wanna live!” From morty and shame things didn’t go well with Jessica again but i really hope this season still continues being great
Playing with the concept of time doesn’t always work but when done right it’s certainly a treat. Here although it wasn’t entirely consistent it was still very enjoyable.
I loved how Mr. Nimbus' power over Rick seems to be his capacity to wear him out with his ridiculous persona and powers. Rick's intellect and tech could probably be an equal match or even an easy win, but Mr. Nimbus emotionally manipulates and exhausts him like it's a piece of cake to the point where Rick just submits to him because it's the easiest way to get rid of his bullshit.
Jessica literally says "Was I just an object in another story?" during her time god monologue. In the post credits scene Beth and Jerry said rick wouldn't understand but Mr. Nimbus said yes he would
The thing that scares me the most about how good this episode is is that every single first episode in a season has been good but since 3 and 4 the quality has dropped since the first episode of their respective seasons. I am wholly optimistic though because I think they've been on a winning streak since the second half of season 4. Fingers crossed.
There was a nice amount of subtle continuity in this episode, like Rick referring to him and Morty getting mermaid puss in The Ricklantis Mix Up or Rick fucking a planet. Throwaway lines that reward long time viewers but are very plausible for new viewers that haven’t seen the relevant episodes.
Rick’s relationship with nimbus is fascinating not only because the dynamic of respect and hints of a former lover quarrel, but because it seems that he was a part of Rick’s life before he even became the inter dimensional space outlaw we know him as, because it happened on earth while he was still married. It was before he disappeared for 20 years to battle the gromfllomites, and presumably before he even met squanchy and Bird Person. I imagine at that point Rick was more of a Tony stark/Elon musk type figure than the seemingly omnipotent character we know him as. Rick might’ve even been jealous of nimbus and maybe that’s what drove him to discover inter dimensional travel. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into it.
The pink crystal thing is a Star Sapphire joke. This whole episode is a celebration of kooky superhero comic clichés, almost the opposite of the vicious bile of Worldender.
Yeah they dropped the ball so hard you actually think this episode is funny..shit was mid bro..ain’t hit form since season 3 which was a work of art ..but it’s been down hill since
@@Sauce1011 Could you stop stomping on other’s opinions? You may not have liked this episode that much but you don’t need to tell other people that their opinion is wrong for liking it.
For one I never felt like rick and morty would ever go stale. they can literally include anything and explore any character, and it feels like it’s just getting started
Infinite realities being what they are, Rick’s relationship with Mr. Nimbus seems to fall into the category of strangely constant forces across all timelines... “Every Rick has a vat of acid, Morty!” Or, since they hop around from reality to reality, this might just mean that finding a version of Earth with a Mr Nimbus who has canonical backstory with Rick (and Diane) is part of Rick’s criteria for finding a new reality to call home... most of Rick’s friends are just family, but he chooses to keep Nimbus as his arch-nemesis despite seeming ashamed and embarrassed by him.
I'm surprised I had to scroll this far to see anyone point out that maybe this Rick was involved with a different Nimbus in his old reality and maybe this Nimbus was involved with the old Rick who was here before, but these two don't necessarily have a history with each other.
i think the funniest part was when summer asks everybody how did mr nimbus do the police, and jerry just goes "oh for god summer he is mr nimbus he controls the police" lmao
What you’re missing here about the episode is why Namor vs Mr Fantastic and why they would use that in this episode. The point is power through science vs power through magic. The fact that Nimbus is able to help them at the end is to illustrate that Rick’s science isn’t always the be all and end all sometimes unexplainable things can make the difference which obviously Rick would hate. That’s why Nimbus and Namor are such great foils to Rick and Reed Richards.
Backstories are kinda dumb and pandering tbh. Like nobody needs to know how Boba Fett became Boba Fett. the mystery of the character is what makes them interesting!
@@ultimadum7785 I think that is true for some characters like Boba Fett but not all characters. We don't need a full back story but when things from Rick's past continually show up and they keep hinting, I think it actually would service the show and be interesting if they explored his backstory a little. Not a complete run through but maybe about Nimbus and Rick's relationship, how Dianne ties into it, how she dies and why he left in the first place. I think the reason why they haven't is because Morty actually is Rick (as we can see him be more Rick than ever in this episode) and he ends up causing some loop that creates the story. I'm guessing that will be the final reveal of the show, but hey.... THAT'S JUST A FILM THEORY😎
This episode showed morty just how easily you can accidentally misstep in the universe and create millions of violent enemies. From the first time he went to get the wine, all the way through Jessica using a bottle opener to save morty (because morty was obsessed by getting the wine) which ultimately damned his chance to be with her. Morty was critical of rick in the beginning "WHY DOES IT ALWAYS HAVE TO BE A FIGHT WITH YOU!?" was the real plot of this one, and morty found out first hand, it's not that simple. and I fucking loved it.
At this point Rick is more Reed Richard then Doc Brown. Whole counsel made of alternate versions of himself and the fact that he has a rivalry with an undersea King. He's like whatever didn't have the stretchy powers but still kept all his brains.
Idk why, but IMO really CANNOT get enough rick and morty.. I love this show.. been watching since 2016 and I’ve rewatched a lot of episodes SO MANY times
Its definitely not my favorite epsiode in the series, but compared to what we have been getting in season 4 (especially in the first half like you said), im pretty happy with it.
That’s where we’re at we’re settling for pretty happy..miss me with that ..they hit the ceiling in season 3 they need to get back there not this MID bs ...Nimbus what a joke what am I 5 years old
about your final question- I think that both would be the correct way forward for backstory in R&M. Some sections should go unanswered, as Rick (and the entire show for that matter) thrive on being fantastical and imaginative. If we understand everything about the world, we won't be able to suspend our disbelief as well. However, in order for the audience to grow attached to these characters, we need info to "latch onto", reasons to care so to speak. It's a hard balance, but one they've executed very well in the past I think.
Before this episode, Jessica was normal. And I think this episode brought Jessica into Morty’s league. She can’t be with Morty successfully while being normal. I also see Morty turning into sort of a version of Rick. I mean he leveled that castle like nothing.
Yeah, I still think her friendzoning Morty isn't going to be permanent although if I had to guess at a timeframe for their relationship to be canonized, it would be towards the end of the whole series or during a potential movie. Until then, I'll wait patiently and look forward to how the dynamic between them develops in the meantime.
I think what I loved about this episode was how sporadic the set up was to have Morty going back in time to see huge differences in time and it was all because of how the husband thought he was giving a nice gesture to helping Morty when it could have only been perceived in real time as him abandoning his family and you all know the rest, this along with Morty's confusion, but to also remind the audience he is determined to get it done, and how he has become more like rick and could care less about anyone who attacks him. this is just off the top of my head but I would not hate it if we get more of everyone else besides rick and how he affects them, because I do think Rick's character might be getting stale cause at this point he has experienced everything he wants to, shown that he's pretty awful and that he is ready to pull the plug whenever. Not to say that there is nothing left to do with his character but we are getting a glimpse into everyone else, including jessica.
This season is absolute trash. No more brutally delivered insights into the human psyche. No more humor that would offend anyone. It's all just crude middle school sex jokes. There is no way this crap was written by the same writers. This was my favorite show and now its gone.
The show's been going for close to a decade, so the writing team is definitely mostly-different at this point. A real shame they replaced the old ones with Big Mouth-tier garbage.
So, nearly three seasons later (I’ve just watched 7.7), and it’s really interesting that while the show STILL hasn’t answered whether Jessica has been changed by the Narnia incident, it HAS done more episodes focussing on secondary characters - in S7 we’ve already had episodes about Mr Poopybutthole and Mr Goldenfold/Water T.
This episode was just brilliant had a headache so couldn't digest it properly but the next day at full capacity I was able to enjoy this absolute marvel genius level Rick and morty working at the peak of their power
I think exploring the background and history of Rick is a great way for them to keep things fresh, often times you see shows get into the more lore driven side of things later on in the series when not so many care anymore But they’ve done a good job of just slowly trinkling it in through the entire series
I think Rick's past should remain a mystery but it would be cool if each episode of season 5 focused on a different side character. Not to the extent that the episode is from their perspective but like this episode focused and developed Jessica, it would be cool if they did this with a recurring character every episode and they all changed through the experiences

And in the end, when they finally accept that they don't know or understand and they just want it put behind them, they are merely lost, as it has defined them for so long. We are all slaves to our past.
I think this episode is gonna age like a fine wine.

This is a really good comment on the episode.
Exploring Ricks backstory is something interesting and something Everyone would love to see but not every episode maybe a few here and there every season or so
I really hope they never do it, however. Hints and whatnot are fine, but I'd prefer if they keep some mystery overall.
@@thisisfyne true- I meant it as like flashbacks or subtle dialogue or background image that tell his backstory

It would be pretty neat if they did what Gravity Falls did with the portal, ie: have some after credit scenes that show Rick's backstory.

I think it's finnaly time for rick to have his development as well
That's why superman sucks
@@papabird4425 Superman doesn't suck. People just don't read his comics. Honestly it's a fallacy that an OP character can't be fun. In fact the fun of Rick was what device he was going to pull out to win with next and that he was always in control. It made for fun escapism since we all want that sense of complete control over a situation. If you want to say but then there's no stakes I'd say it really comes down to the creativity of how he wins and the humor. That's the appeal.

I genuinely enjoy when Beth and Jerry are working together
True. It's sweet how Beth has gotten over her daddy issues and seems to have a lot more empathy and compassion. And Jerry seems to be both developing more of a backbone, and not being insecure about who he is as a person.
I also like how Morty is becoming more competent and Rick being more human and vulnerable. It's good character development.

Playing with the concept of time doesn’t always work but when done right it’s certainly a treat. Here although it wasn’t entirely consistent it was still very enjoyable.
I know showrunners really enjoy leaving a bunch of our questions unanswered, but I'm VERY curious about Rick and Diane's relationship!..

Of course I want to know more about Rick's backstory.
I hope it never happens.
So much happened that it's hard to believe it's only 20+ minutes long.
2:15 on the surface? Aren't they from the ocean?
Thank you everyone, I'll be here all night. I have no life
This episode being on UA-cam made me start watching Rick and Morty. Very interesting show.
Namor was actually the first marvel hero (although he was originally a villain)
The pink crystal thing is a Star Sapphire joke. This whole episode is a celebration of kooky superhero comic clichés, almost the opposite of the vicious bile of Worldender.
This episode made me laugh way more than any episode in season 4.

Rick and Morty: 😃
Richard and Mortimus: 🧐
For one I never felt like rick and morty would ever go stale. they can literally include anything and explore any character, and it feels like it’s just getting started
I like subtle explorations. Gives us the viewers the chance to build his back story up as the show progresses
Do you think he called Rick "Richard" was a reference to Reid Richards?
Infinite realities being what they are, Rick’s relationship with Mr. Nimbus seems to fall into the category of strangely constant forces across all timelines...
“Every Rick has a vat of acid, Morty!”
Or, since they hop around from reality to reality, this might just mean that finding a version of Earth with a Mr Nimbus who has canonical backstory with Rick (and Diane) is part of Rick’s criteria for finding a new reality to call home... most of Rick’s friends are just family, but he chooses to keep Nimbus as his arch-nemesis despite seeming ashamed and embarrassed by him.
I'm surprised I had to scroll this far to see anyone point out that maybe this Rick was involved with a different Nimbus in his old reality and maybe this Nimbus was involved with the old Rick who was here before, but these two don't necessarily have a history with each other.
I wonder how different the series would be if instead of Morty, it was Jerry whose brainwaves that Rick needed.
i think the funniest part was when summer asks everybody how did mr nimbus do the police, and jerry just goes "oh for god summer he is mr nimbus he controls the police" lmao

Wasn’t this part just a fake backstory to trick the galactic federation?
Yes, but convincing lies often have a kernel of truth to them.
I literally went and watched the episode JUST so I could watch this. As usual, thank you for your consistently great content!
Jessica is specifically and deliberately underwritten so that it would be all the funnier when she becomes a time god.
We all want Rick's backstory, that's why they'll never do a full reveal.
Morty didn't call her up for a date. Life support was failing and he called her to say goodbye...the date was her idea.
At this point Rick is more Reed Richard then Doc Brown. Whole counsel made of alternate versions of himself and the fact that he has a rivalry with an undersea King. He's like whatever didn't have the stretchy powers but still kept all his brains.
There is one frame of Mr. Nimbus touching Jerry's package....
The first 2 minutes thought it was a terrible episode then it turned into an amazing episode
Nimbus bows to the bogdanofs.
morty causing so much inner turmoil within the other world was some good dark humor
They act like jaded ex lovers so makes sense.
Mr. Nimbus is one of my fave characters from the show! ✨ Would love seeing him more! Especially more about his and Richard‘s backstory, haha.
Imagine if Rick doesn’t like mr nimbus because he’s actually beths father
That would be pretty nasty considering the end of the episode...
Rick and Morty is really awful now imo.
“Rick wouldn’t understand”
“Yes he would!”
Was confirmation he and Rick … had an entanglement so to speak. Possibly involving Diane
This episode was just brilliant had a headache so couldn't digest it properly but the next day at full capacity I was able to enjoy this absolute marvel genius level Rick and morty working at the peak of their power
The A plot was solid, the B plot was great, the C plot was mostly just weird but kinda funny. Good episode.
I think exploring the background and history of Rick is a great way for them to keep things fresh, often times you see shows get into the more lore driven side of things later on in the series when not so many care anymore
But they’ve done a good job of just slowly trinkling it in through the entire series
One of the biggest reasons I love this show is because of the way it flawlessly intertwines the epically cosmic with the absolutely petty and mundane.
The more I’ve rewatched this episode the more it’s become one of my favorite Rick and morty episodes ever
Honestly for this show I can watch probably 14-20 Seasons
I thought it was a play on Eric Andre, seeing as he’s on Adult Swim too. They also made a joke on Samurai Jack on the last episode
I think Rick's past should remain a mystery but it would be cool if each episode of season 5 focused on a different side character. Not to the extent that the episode is from their perspective but like this episode focused and developed Jessica, it would be cool if they did this with a recurring character every episode and they all changed through the experiences
