I agree. Season 4 had some of the best episodes of the series. Rattle star rick lackticta was my personal fav, vat of acid close second. But it also has some of the worst episodes in the whole series. Never ricking morty was the worst. And the dragon episode was quite uncomfortable.

Idk what it is you people expect out of the creators but I think its best us "fans" to just stfu and let them do things their way. I feel seasons 3 and 4 were downgrades like i find the first two seasons perfectly fine season 3 should've had it's entire season be focused on rick escaping it would be a great way to change the format and having beth not only insult jerry or argue with him have her start to doubt him and doubt rick and doubt herself giving more impact to her becoming a clone and divorcing jerry

A lot of season 1 and 2 humor involved a lot of improvising with Harmon and Roiland. The new seasons don't have that uniqueness.
This. Also reckless chaos of the first seasons. Hence "Bushworld Adventures" is the perfect Rick and Morty episode.
Roiland is the only reason why certain episodes are funny e.g the Meseeks. But he's not as funny when playing Rick and Morty
Imo roilands humor is the worst part. I love community, and didn't care for solar opposites (besides the wall stuff), or for the beloved bits of Rick and morty where it's clearly just him improvising (interdimentional cable - I find it so boring, loved morty's mindblowers instead). It seems to me to be where the "random" or crass humor comes from, while Harmon is behind the more "witty" stuff
Roland's voice acting is great though! And adds a lot to the jokes I do enjoy, which I'm sure he does contribute to in some part.

yep, now they feel the need to do a bunch of filler because they're afraid that if they serialize it it'll peak early and they'll run out of things to do. which just ends up being a self fulfilling prophecy and making the show that empty now in the service of getting better later
They could honestly do a complete storyline since they have infinity universes, sorta like endgame, they can make a fully complete story with Rick and morty progressing and getting older and when the story ends, we can go back somehow or someday to continue those 70 episodes like a phase 4 or something
But literally all the main characters received development in season 3, it was the seasons main focus

I think their biggest mistake was making Rick a god. Make him powerful, yes - making him invulnerable, that just removes all stakes in the story. Rick is the funniest when he's under pressure

I think making him a god was cool, the annoying thing is this god-like human getting intimidated by his daughter in season 4 last episode, he is literally the smartest being alive and cant kill himself even if he wants it, i really did not like the fact of him acting like a little bitch

I don't get the problem here. This season has done all the things he said it's lacking in some fashion. I think people are being extremely jaded and pessimistic about it. You can find flaws in anything if that's where your only focus is directed.

I personally feel it can be too early to judge, but it bothers me because season 3 feels like a departure and than season 4 feels like playing it safe to give in to season 1 and 2 fans. Fans are going to complain again and the creators will scramble again. I just want them to decide to make stuff that changes the show or places close to its roots.

I feel like we are forcing what we want out of rick and morty instead of letting the writers and creaters doing what they want because its their show. This is shown in s4 titled "never ricking morty" where the storylord (The person i theorize to be us and adult swim) Suck the Marketability and profitability out of rick and morty forceing them to have a dreamt up ending that "we" want ( is shown where rick and morty go against evil morty and an entire army of ricks)without consideration of what they actually want(the writers and rick and morty)..and what i presume they want..is to do whatever tf they want because its rick and morty and we should just accept it the eay it is. :)

Honestly i just loved it as much as all the other seasons. I mean there are particular episodes that are just, so smart and funny that they are undeniably the best...but i like literally every episode at some level for sure.
I like Rick and Morty, but I hate how this show treats its characters. It's basically torture porn at this point.

Jerry is a fantastic example of this. Especially in Season 3, where the crew just gives routine "Reason You Suck" speeches to him. It just feels boring and toothless, under the guise of being risque.
Pretty much. Now the show just is phoning it in with tired gimmicks, jokes, etc. The few attempts they did try something different it angered fans (i.e. killing Brian and reviving him 2 episodes later) and wasting time in story arcs that go nowhere and are resolved a few episodes later like the whole Brian and Hope marriage thing which the writers decide to kill her off so Brian can go home to the family again.

This season is absolute trash. No more brutally delivered insights into the human psyche. No more humor that would offend anyone. It's all just crude middle school sex jokes. There is no way this crap was written by the same writers. This was my favorite show and now its gone.

Season 3 was pretty good tbh
You beat me to making this point. Season 4 and Season 3 before that felt like a real step down from seasons 1 & 2. The “whole episode genre takedowns” like Vindicators and One Crew Over the Cuckoo’s Morty feel incredibly one note, and with some exceptions I felt the overall quality of the jokes and character writing has been stepping down as the show has progressed.
And yeah, Claw and Hoarders is....bad.

Your critique resonates with me, but your application of it seems biased. Seasons 1 and 2 had episodes that were genre takedowns. They had two "reality isn't what it seems" episodes, and it already seemed tired at that point. The Freddy Kruger and Inception Simulation episodes just get forgotton while the Evil Morty and Phoenix Person episodes stick out.

Silverrida “reality isn’t what it seems” isn’t a genre, it’s a trope. Those two episodes weren’t much special, but in a show like this hanging a bunch of jokes on a single broad trope is how you do episodes anyway. The idea might be stale but the jokes can still work.
The problem with episodes like Crewkoos and Vindicators is that clever jokes get lost because the whole episode becomes about Harmon’s dislike of particular genres. It stops being fun because EVERY joke is in service of Harmon ranting about other fiction through Rick, which gets tired FAST.

Season 4 wasn't as bad as some ppl thought, I liked it, but with Season 5 I definitely see a decline in writing quality. S5E1 was pretty good S5E2 with the fake space squids one was crap, S5E3 with Planetina was good, but S5E4 and S5E5 have both been total crap :/

The first two seasons were just incredible, then season 3 wasn’t as consistent but still had great moment but season 4 just doesn’t have as high of highs

I didn't even watch the video yet, so I don't know if I agree with argumentation in the vid, but I wanted to post my opinion before there are thousand other comments.
And I agree with your opinion (1 & 2 = god level, 3 = highs and lows, but still good, 4 = imo, garbage).
It's not even "ok" for me, there are so many problems with it imo, I don't even want to get started or I'll end up writing entire essay. Just few quick points:
1. Morty, Beth, Summers - all behave like a douche-y version of Rick, full of themselves, "cool" (those goddamn half-closed eyes when being condescending towards someone...), "witty", etc.
2. Rick behaving like a douche-y version of Rick almost all the time. Where's the whacky, crazy alcoholic with no regards to his (or others') life? Where's the mumbling, silly Rick that messes shit up?
3. It seems writers are trying to outdo themselves in the amount of words per minute a character can say while trying to make quasi-intelligent, sarcastic jokes through the characters.
4. I have to disagree with OP here about lack of character development. I think they developed so much they hardly resemble themselves (especially Morty). A good, long-running comedy show needs to keep a good balance between character development (because otherwise we are just watching the same thing, with just slightly different setting, over and over again) and keeping characters recognizable, because at the end of the day, that's what made the show funny and popular, which allowed it to make more seasons. Take any successful comedy show (regardless if you agree it's funny or not, I'm sure there's one successful that you like): The Office - Michael grows as a character, matures a bit, falls in love, yet he doesn't change into serious, responsible manager. He's still silly, still makes inappropriate jokes, still runs a branch like no one else would. Friends: Joey matures a bit, approaches his temporary feelings towards Rachel and a potential conflict with his friend, and her ex, like an adult. Yet still is silly (not to say stupid), still loves eating, watching tv and being somewhat like a giant kid. Same goes for almost all characters that stay likable, and those who don't usually stopped resembling themselves.
Anyway, I ended up writing long comment no one will read either way, but I had to get it off my chest, especially because I seem to be in minority of people who think R&M season 4 is just really bad, with very few funny moments. I'm glad someone shares my opinion.

@@Daduu I honestly don't mind that you enjoy it. It's great that there are people who think it's fun, means it's not a wasted effort and work. But you are definitely not in minority. Look at ratings, scores on RT or IMDB. I'd say 90%-95% people think it's a great season. You might be in minority within the real of a comment section under this video, since the video is about how S4 is not that good, but generally people seem to love it.
I agree that season 4 feels off, but rather than being due to repetition, the problem is something I can't quite put my finger on. The easiest way to describe it is that s4 Rick and Morty just seems to be trying way too hard. 1-3 always had this wonderful way of being hysterically funny in the most casual way-- almost like they weren't trying at all (which was the genius of it). The best episode of s4 by far (in my opinion) was Rattlestar Ricklactica, and even that seemed to lack the carefree, "i dont give a shit" tone of its predecessors.
Of course, the pressure back then wasn't nearly as high as it is now, and you've got to feel for the poor writers. The impossible fan expectation they're supposed to live up to is a heavy weight to carry. However, it's that very strive for perfection thats bringing the show down (and making the season 4 release take forever). A lot of times, they will inadvertently cram jokes when it's unnecessary (note: quality over quantity is key in humor) or overwork them into the ground. But again, you really can't blame them for not being able to just have fun and throw things around like they used to :/
Feels like Harmon and roiland's influence is less this season. Theyre both notoriously hard to work with (Harmon moreso). The writers are probably trying their best to capture the image, but with less and less input from the showrunner and creator, it's hard to do that right
Totally agree. It feels like they're trying too hard to be clever. One of the results is that the scripts are bloated. The stories are convoluted and Rick throws out some kind of complicated one-liner about three times a minute. The audience has no time to process what's going on or what the joke was before the show's already onto the next thing. The voice acting even sounds rushed. It's like they forgot how to edit. Like they're insecure about their jokes, so they put in as many as possible so that at least some of them land. Unfortunately this just has the opposite effect. Basically the show just needs to chill the fuck out. Keep the best stuff, keep it simple, let the show breathe instead of suffocating it.

I think that one of the other signs of this loss is the overproduction of the secondary characters. The details and the character designs are soooo great but in the train episode or the heist episode they're so many people, backstorys, plotwist within plotwist, etc, that episodes are gettin really difficult to get into... Plus its getting really fast and most of those character won't reappear (except for the train episode wich is precisely a middle finger to what I just write). Looks like they're trying to cover uncertain choices with quantity of detailed stuff.

Well I won't say its a downfall tho, I mean snake jazz is so cool and characters like the talking cat and its monstrous mysterious past made me laugh so hard. Furthermore remind yourself that it is ONLY episode 36, with 13 hours of show I'm pretty sure that a lot more crazy stories are waiting for us :)
Remember, Rick and Morty was such a hit success that it's now competing with itself. These new episodes are good, just not as good as previous episodes.
i have to agree on this one. season 4 feels like a mix bag of hits and miss. the first episode was ridiculously hilarious but as the show continued the episodes seemed more egotistical and meta that it kinda ruins this whole cool sci-fi show of a drunk scientist and his grandson. i've recently finished episode 6 and it just felt like the writers used the entire episode to tell the fans 'hey, just so you know, all the stuff you saw on the trailer was just a troll and you better lower your expectations because we're not going to listen to you anymore, mkay?' here's me hoping the season gets better 😣
I feel exactly the same. Episode 6 was an interesting disappointment, Like when you're given a gift you don't want and don't know what to do with it. I've been a big fan of the show since it came out, and this season has seriously made me consider if its even worth getting excited for new episodes. Like you said, ot seems like they're going so egotistical and meta that they're not exploring the fun of a cool scifi comedy about a drunk scientist grandpa and his family.
I feel like the writers of the show need to read a summary of the premise so that they can go back to their roots
i don't know what's the point of disliking this video. I'm a huge fan of the show and still i recognize how bad season 4 was compared to the other seasons. i think truth is a hard thing to swallow, even if it just a tv show.
The first half of season 4 was still enjoyable IMO, but I have to agree that so far, as a package, these episodes don't stand out enough to put S4 on par with the other 3. I know that could change, I hope it does. They're generally funny-enough little self-contained stories, but I would have loved even one episode that picked up on some of the previously established serialized plots (I know we're all waiting for an episode that gives us more Citadel/evil Morty, Bird Person, etc.).
All of the S4 eps feel like they basically could have been tossed in as random mid-season episodes in any of the prior seasons, and they would have sat in the middle of the pack as "enjoyable," but not the ones that really come to mind when we think of the show's best.

Kokakoka 36 Making fun of the audience and themselves is something the show has done repeatedly. Clearly the writers do not want to go the whole serialized story route anymore and that’s okay. It’s their show. They don’t have to cater to what the fans want. I find this amazing as a lot of shows buckle underneath the wrath of ravenous fans who think they control the show.
Rick and Morty does have development. All of these characters are flawed, extremely flawed. Rick starts off as a destructive drunk and, at first his destructiveness and nihilism were not challenged. By season two we started to see that he really hates himself while also viewing himself as a god. He uses his intelligence to get what he wants and to control others and when he can’t do that, he gets pissed. He’s also petty af. Season three, his main goal of getting rid of Jerry was accomplished and now he had full control over his family. However, Jerry comes back and puts Rick all the way at the bottom of the family, which Rick despises. Season 4 explores how his family doesn’t need him to get out of dangerous and wacky situations. He has used his intelligence and power to gain an edge on them, but by the end the rest of them realize that he’s a shitty person and they don’t need him. They’re independent and now they hate him.
The arcs are clearly there. Morty’s is very obvious. He’s not the same from season one. Neither is Beth. The only characters that do not change much is Summer and Jerry. Jerry regressed from season 3 (which I personally hate. He was finally becoming interesting) and Summer doesn’t really need to change. She can sniff out bullshit better than the rest of them.
I can go on and on about the writing of this show. Jay Exci calls it a “Dumb show with amazing writing” and I agree with him. The show uses it wacky sci-fi concepts to explore the depths of their characters. If you don’t see the nuance than I think you’re missing out on some great television. You don’t need a high iq to see it.

I'm so glad that I'm not alone on this. Rick and Morty season 4 just feels... off? I still love the show, don't get me wrong, but the tone has had such a massive shift and it feels like the spark from season 1 and 2 is starting to burn out. I really hope the writers will be able to turn this around.
Honestly season 3 was a GREAT conclusion (season 2 too) but season 4 for me sucked. The whole dynamic characters (mind you I rewatched the first and didn't realize the abuse of the kid🙃) but with Rick's backstory and the whole universe thing works. Season 4 for me is more of a throw-away than an ACTUAL story... It's just a mess

I liked Rick and Morty back when it was them messing around with gadgets in their garage, not all this Interdimensional stuff. (Still really entertaining though) s2 was the perfect balance between simple yet cool gadgets and 'complex' space travel
Part of the reason I'm here is because I'm sensing the repetition of the characters on the show; it's getting to the point where I feel like if they're not going to do anything with the characters then stop writing plots around them.
And unfortunately, Jerry is the biggest victim of this; every single time an episode is centered around Jerry it's just to either show how inadequate he is at anything or worse how the UNIVERSE is against him. Seriously, Jerry getting all the way back home without Rick's help is impressive, but did those bar-patrons REALLY have to get offended over a goddamn ROCK?!
Season 4 is unfortunately continuing this trend and I'm just frustrated by it, because it just feels like Jerry only exists so that other characters have someone they can bully.
Think about this for a second; Season 1 has Rick Potion #9, an episode where the world literally comes to an end. And yet, instead of being a punchline for his inadequacy, Jerry steps up and becomes a badass...Season 1 was doing something different with him. Three seasons later, he's just the same punchline over and over...

I think Jerry stepping up and becoming badass is kind of predictable. I much prefer his role in s4e10, where he actually helps, but in a pathetic way. Not everyone would actually become heroic in a moment like these.
Finally someone said it, I found season 1 really interesting and funny, season 2 funny and interesting, season 3 had great moments and was in my opinion the funniest one, this new season has barely made me crack a smile, and most of it's episodes have felt like nonsense filler than anything new and interesting.

That doesn't make the show vindicated. Developing characters is a core staple of media. If Rick and Morty choose not to do that, they don't get points for being meta about it. Honestly it feels like since season 3 it has been downhill. They had some kind of shake up with their writers or something and it shows. Characterization really faltered and flanderized in a worse way starting from season 3, and the episodes overall felt less consistent from then on. At this point it just feels like the river has noticeably narrowed.

Harmon felt like he had to do some diversity hires and expanded the writers' room from him, Justin and I think one or two other guys, to four guys and four women. This is noticeable since season 3, the show has less personality and feels more like your regular rude cartoon, and it drives me nuts that Dan actually thinks the only fair thing to do was to hire just for diversity's sake, I can't believe he wouldn't notice how it obviously changes the show's voice and tone.

That season saw considerable development from Jerry, learning to live on his own, and contemplating his mistakes, Rick, showing why he hates Jerry, not just because he's useless, but because he's toxic, and most of the other characters, on top of this it had very entertaining action in the pilot for the meat heads in the audience, it had clever and occasionally absurd humor which, and very original story premises which served the plot at multiple points, you can't just say "the show got worse cos the team changed" you should back it up, give critiques and evidence, if you just make a statement and explain why it happened, not why you feel the way you do about it, you sound like a bit of a nob

I can describe pretty much why this show became so shit pretty easy with a simple real life example. I used to have a roomate, he was slightly obnoxious but we still mostly got along. Eventually we started watching the show sometimes and he became completely obsessed with the show. Like we would be chilling, I would ask what he wanted to watch and he would excitedly say Rick and Morty! Now I know this doesn’t sound to horrible at first, but it was how he started acting while watching it, and pretty much any other show. Every single episode he would not only obnoxiously laugh loudly at every single quip, but felt the need to not only pause the show, but sometimes rewind it so he could explain every single joke and how smart it was, and thus him because he understood it. It was literally living with a “you have to a have a high iq to understand this show” person who could not understand why that sort of attitude is obnoxious, but also didn’t understand that he was doing it, as he would joke about those type of people, while being that exact same person.
As long as you're not being rude about your opinion (which you're not), I don't see why anyone would get upset at this video. If this is your honest opinion, then there's nothing wrong with that.

I think it's worth noting that some of the fans after s4 got unbearable, so it seems like this season was more to address that and to almost mock that. Like that dragon one, it shows how Rick is super powerful and can overcome any obstacle, but it also demonstrates how boring that is and how Rick really is just sleazy and a bit of a dick (which Morty calls him out on).
At the end of the day, they got given a lot of episodes, which means they can finally address the elephant in the room and how the fans are turning away more people from watching it.
Plus they did say that they would go back to some silly and episodic episodes. Plus it is also worth mentioning that you can see the character development still, it shows Morty as more assertive and more disenchanted with the adventures and shows Jerry as having a bit of a backbone now (as shown by him not needing Rick to get back, even if he does it in a really awkward way).
Normally, your videos are quite well detailed and on the point, but I can't help but feel this was a bit of a lazy take on it. it's only been 1 season which hasn't appeased the fans and you're already saying it's on its downturn. I'd say this was more for them pushing out the boat and seeing how they can best layout the format, where they both appease the fans, but also get to the points that they want to address.

If Dan only did what he wanted for the show it would seek a downfall, obviously you have to find a balance between your art and your fans. Though it can definitely be hard. Especially when you have such a strong fan base demanding you to do so much and the show definitely addresses that quite often. You can’t really say we’re giving him “too much credit” for that when it’s his SHOW, he wrote those implications in for a reason. Season 4 definitely wasn’t my favorite either, but it’s just making it’s way for more character development and a bigger plot.
This show was never meant to be about character arcs or long-term storylines. It's just meant to be a funny show that plays around with interesting concepts and ideas. Season 3 showed us that they are not good with story arcs and they have gone back to basics this season while trying some new ideas here and there. They are going to make whatever show they want to make and not go down predictable paths that fans want to theorize about. Just relax and enjoy the ride guys. You don't need a high IQ to enjoy this show.

Yep.... also It seemed like the show just gave Rick any gadget imaginable every time he needed it. Oh, you have a problem? here is a wacky crazy random gadget that does 5 crazy insane things to accomplish it's goal. And he already carried it with him. He basically feels like a looney toon god that can just take anything he needs out of his pocket.
Also, he is now immortal since he can just reincarnate into a clone form another universe.... so any feeling of possible danger is now nonexistent.
At some points he felt so overpowered that It became boring to watch.

- Characters stuck. Morty, Summer, Beth and Jerry go back and forth. Rick was elevated to a god. Difficult (not impossible) to create tension and challenge around that.
- Jokes are getting worse. Easy punchlines and cliches are used to get cheap laughs instead of being mocked.

A lot of people seem to share that opinion. I don't really get it. The other seasons had bad episodes too. I feel like people are just having unrealistic expectations.
The 1st and the 2nd episode from the 1st season are the worst of the show by far.

Honestly Season 4 is their worst to date. Feels over the top
just nøbody. The season sucks. What do you want? Not everybody is a Stan. Who wants the show to suck? Not the fans - that’s for sure. We want the show to be amazing but it sucks now. It’s just Saturday morning cartoon fluff with no continuity and no sub plot. That’s what made the show the show.
@@bamm86 nah, I mean season 4 is easily the weakest, but characters definitely go through arcs. Hell, season literally ends by everyone overcoming their problems and abandoning Rick for good, and Rick's just wondering should he change or not. I think that plot has some potential. Although some of these episodes, I wouldn't call bad per say, but are just boring to me, while first two seasons were 90% good. Third season was also pretty good, but it's more like 70% good. S4 is 50/50
Thanks for saying this; it felt like every episode of season 4 would've been included in a 1-2 minute Interdimensional Cable bit in season 1 or 2, but now they're stretched out to a full half hour without any additional development (like, "What if Time Travel Tropes but Snakes" is funny for a minute or 2, not 30)
A friend of mine who has about 20 years on me told me something interesting. He noticed that cartoon shows seem to mostly have a three year cap. The first season is great, second season is kinda great, third season looses the rest of it's steam and it's dead. If it goes on past that, it just sucks.
Gotta disagree with your friend, The Simpsons Golden Age was around 8 or 9 years, basically season 2 all the way through The Principal and the Pauper. Still pissed about that episode to this day. Armin Tamzerian get the fuck outta here with that shit!!
The problem I have with Rick and Morty is I feel like Rick in older episodes was smart but not invinsible making him admireable but still with his weaknesses. I feel like now they have acknowledged that he is that smart that nothing could beat him but still try to set things up in a way where things do beat him. For example, Rick uses his portlegun to automatically locate the locations of his enemys then shoots them effortlessly, that same rick also gets beaten up by the God of a planet nobodys heard of. Giving the main character a tool like this just kills any sort of adventure you could put the main character through as he can easily just pull out his portal gun and autolock kill people.
The toilet scene is more about Rick’s attempt to reach out for a best friend. Rick constantly battles his own ego which may cause him to never be able to really connect to someone. To think that Rick had all that set up just to make fun of him, because we all know he could easily keep that toilet discreet.
The old man and the seat is the stand out episode of season four so far in my opinion very moving and it’s all done through the guise of poop jokes

What's kinda killing it for me is that in the first 2 (even for most of season 3), the show didn't feel like it was trying to be smart. It was mostly fun and subversive sci-fi, with the occasional kinda smart thing here and there. But season 4 (so far) feels like it's trying to be smart and so it isn't. I really enjoy it - especially the heist episode - but it's just trying too hard in places I think
It's almost like the show has begun copying the edgy fans that were copying the show... it's like the world's shittiest feedback loop.
Season 5 bout to be lit. New episode just dropped, and its one the best episodes yet! Show completely revived their potential with 1 episode already, cant wait for the rest
