Yes, it has its quirks, it has it's downsides, it isn't really economical but damn, the quality and design of the car, the raw NA sound makes you love this car. It really has an Alfa soul in it. Simple interior
    Dont know how you feel, but i hate the center-doing-everything console in modern cars. Wanna change the heating, scroll from the the radio menu, to the heating setting and slide the touch screen, or push buttons on it. You need to see what you doing, but i think its a bit dangerous, when driving on the motorway, when you have watch the road, and the other cars. And when you leave the car, can see your fingeprints on everywhere on the screen.
    Older cars kept it simple. Some knob for the cold or warm, and some slide or switch or knob for intesity. You cannot miss it. Dont need to see what you trying to do, just do it.

      So true, i absolutely love my 1991 e36 325i Manual it is such a damn good car. It's sporty with its smooth as butter straight six and never lets me down, i had one from 1993 and it was actually my first car i liked it so much i had to buy another one after my newer cars all had problems. The cars i have owned made post 2000 have been absolute freaking crap, plastic moving parts just do not last and they have quirky electrical issues. My E36 has over 250,000 k's on the clock and drives like new... There is just something about the 90's...

    Don't forget about handbrake levers!! Today, most manufacturers use electronic buttons, which are rubbish! The handbrake levers are slowly disappearing :(
    **edit: I personally use a handbrake lever on my MX-5 for track-days (mainly powersliding) and I use it on my Land Rover Defender when I do hill starts while on ski holidays in the alps.

    • @madfiat8932
      @madfiat8932 7 років тому +6

      This.
      Friend recently bought a base spec Fiat 500X. Buying the base model is the only way in the US to get a manual on the 500X which is what he wanted. Then we noticed it had a push button parking brake. So his wife, who was raised driving manuals in mountains, asked how she was supposed to deal with being stopped on a steep hill with someone tailgating. Apparently she was taught to use the handbrake to help ease the launch on steep hills (this works very well btw). But if you don't have a handbrake... I suggested she use Hill Holder, which I have on my Fiat 500 Abarth. Then we looked... and the 500X base model doesn't even have Hill Holder! .. so basically she'll roll back a little bit no matter what she does if on a steep hill.

    • @weiyangmok5146
      @weiyangmok5146 7 років тому +19

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 7 років тому +10

      That enrages me to no end. Touch screens are so unreliable. Your fingers have to be clean and dry to use them. Otherwise, the screen won't respond. And if the fucking car companies demand touch screens, they need to make them PRACTICAL. I mean, everything is hidden in sub-menus and it's so tough to find anything. Why can't they let Google Android program the screens for them. I have a VW and the menu system is NO better than GM, Honda or whatever. They're all confusing and difficult to use. I frequently have to stop the car to search for something minor to adjust. it's just a pain in the butt.

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 7 років тому +4

      touch screen everything is bad. If the screen cracks or a sensor goes bad, you lose half of your vehicle interior functions. I hate that. I'm holding onto my current car as long as I can. Something tells me the damn car companies will have touch screen steering wheels next for the MEGA lazy types who want to text, talk to the front seat passenger and drive at the same time. Why don't they take a bus instead?

    • @jonathantan2469
      @jonathantan2469 7 років тому +3

      Problem with touchscreens is you can't use touch-n-feel to operate them while keeping your eyes mostly on the road.
      With my old Nissan I could adjust the AC/heater, operate the hazard lights, music player, defogger, etc. without having to look away.

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 7 років тому +1

      428lost, And do you know that the owners manual for a VW Golf is over 120 pages? Try remembering even half of the stuff in there before you comment on that. Simply resetting the service indicator itself takes several tries. And also, VW deletes a LOT of features from their cars for the US market. That big blank space around the base of the shifter is for FOUR buttons not installed on US models.

    Not even reading the comments, just making a list.
    V8s, big and small block engines,
    carburetors,
    sealed glass halogen headlights,
    body-on-frame construction,
    vinyl seats,
    ability to order exactly what options you do and don't want,
    straight sixes,
    oddball engines (5 cylinders mentioned here, V4s, 3 cylinders, etc)
    exhaust you can actually hear,
    engines with two valves per cylinder (somehow they have a nicer sound to them in my opinion)
    quirky cars, such as small boxy SUVs, hatchbacks, and station wagons,
    live axle front ends in 4x4s,
    pedal e-brakes in trucks, mechanical parking/handbrakes in general,
    popup lights,
    chrome (real, metal chrome)
    good looking plastic chrome (something about the new stuff doesnt sit good with me)
    skinny pillars
    hardtops (no b-pillars)
    convertibles (almost dead)
    real 2-doors (4-doors without the second set of doors, same rear legroom) and a coupe being a coupe (2-door with less rear legroom, more boot space)
    manual steering
    3-on-the-tree manual transmissions
    starters where you turn the key, not press a button
    actual keys
    small tail/head lights that dont take up half the car
    top of the door being at a proper arm resting level
    thin steering wheels without a fat airbag and 500 buttons (think ford boomerang wheels with 5 buttons for cruise and thats it)
    automatics with actual gears (none of this CVT bs)
    manual transmissions with granny gears in trucks
    manual transmissions in general (3, 4, and 5 speeds especially)
    Many other things from the 50s-80s that we've lost in modern "safety, aerodynamics, and environmental protection"
    A big one for me is bright paint colors and a variety of interior colors. Everything is a dark boring metallic with black and grey interiors now. Look at the 1980s Ford lineup, specifically the Bronco II (I realize a lot of people hate them or don't even know what they are, but hear me out.) With those you could have a grey, tan, red, or blue interior, and with the Eddie Bauer trimpack you could get pack-specific stitching in your seats. Colors ranged from black to bright greens, reds, blues, and even a "bright bittersweet" orange. Since when can you buy a new car with a blue or red interior and bright blue paint? Certain "performance" cars have bright colors now, but most of the colors are dark and dim. And I've yet to see an interior that offers more than black, grey, white, or tan since the 1990s.
    Ok, I'm done. I could think of more if I spent a few more minutes but this comment is already far too long.

      @TwinPeaksIndustries 7 років тому +2

      Heh, trying to come up with a response to all of these here:
      V8 engines: Yep, those just sound awesome (and I'd love to buy an american V8 classic)
      Carburators: Can't really think of a reason why they should stay, apart from being simpler
      Sealed Glass Halogen headlights: Lasted longer? not sure here
      Body-on-Frame: No point in that except for heavy-duty vehicles
      Vinyl Seats: Never sat in such. Wouldn't mind to try though =)
      Customization freedom: Would never buy a brand new car myself, so doesnt matter for me
      Straight sixes: No hands-on experience here, but the ones I heard on here sounded great
      Oddball engines: V4 are gone because they run very rough, I think. 3-cylinder see a lot of use in smaller cars (and even in the BMW i8)
      Quirky cars: I think these just don't sell enough
      Live axle front ends: Don't know enough about offroad vehicles to say anything
      Pedal e-brakes: Didn't even know such existed
      Manual parking brakes: Actually I don't know many cars that have electronic parking brakes
      Popup headlights: Too many downsides
      Chrome: Doesn't look good on modern cars IMHO
      Skinny pillars: safety and stability strikes again
      Hardtops (no b-pillars): Stil out there. Not many, but there are (were there even ever that many?)
      Convertibles: Still going. I see a lot of them every year, new and old
      Real 2-Doors: Why put 2 doors on a larger car when you can fit 4?
      Manual steering: I guess this depends on where you drive most. Also, cars have gotten larger, heavier and equipped with bigger wheels, so more steering force required
      3 on the tree manuals: I prefer more gears
      Keylock ignition and keys: Fully agree, these "keyless" thing provide no benefit whatsoever
      Small lights: Are getting smaller again now because LED
      Proper door arm rest: Personally never felt much of a need for that
      Thin steering wheels: Are these things even ergonomic, that thin? (never tried). Also, I like my cars with safety and protection features (just not all that are out there today)
      Autos with actual gears: From an engineering standpoint CVTs are the ideal transmission. From an emotional standpoint they are the polar opposite of what people are used to. And people are conservative.
      Manuals with granny gears: Dafuq does granny gears mean?
      Manuals: I don't think they'll disappear anytime soon. At least here in Europe.
      Other things: I'd rather have a car that is both safe, aerodynamic and economical AND fun to drive
      Colors: The "non-boring" colors don't sell well, especially in more expensive vehicles, they also often get lower resale value than your usual black and silver because of that

      3Ddee Seriously, you want pop-up headlights on modern cars? Just imagine how ugly they would look on modern cars. Pop-up headlights looks better on older cars like the Porsche 928, Mazda RX-7 and MX-5 (NA), Opel GT, Ferrari F40, Lamborghini Diablo and Countach, Lotos Esprit, Chevrolet Corvette C2, C3, C4 and C5. Fixed headlights looks much better on modern cars, in my opinion. Also look at minivan, vans, buses, trucks and trains they NEVER had pop-up headlights and just imagine how hideous they would look with pop-up headlights.

It's actually simple compared to today's fake SUVs (they can't possibly handle anything bigger than a speed bump BUT the Cherokee could go off road and tackle muddy potholes in the rain!). It had decent power and was actually reliable. I poured 90,000 miles on it and it only went to the repair shop once in 9 years. I've had a 2009 MINI that was an avalanche of problems by comparison and the engine had pressure and fuel system problems after 50,000 miles! Cars are getting so complicated these days that it guarantees problems in the next 5-6 years.

      I'm actually not to sure about it at the moment. We've got too little lithium in the world to electrify every car on the planet, so as long as battery technology doesn't move on from lithium based solutions, that's a bottleneck.
      At the same time, processes to make fuel from CO2 in the air using nothing but electricity are getting better and better (as in: efficient). And we already have good solutions for storing and distributing fuel. As long as it's made from CO2 from the air, it's also carbon neutral. So this might be a possible alternative to electric vehicles in the near future, although it doesn't solve smog and fine particulate matter problems.
      I guess we'll just have to wait and see which technology will be "ready" first and be most accepted by the general public…

      Also the USA maybe doesn't look to CO2 (with the Trump administration) the rest of the world really looks to the emissions of cars. That's why cars from the USA are almost not sold around the world, because American car manufacturers don't know how to make low emission cars. Unlike: Europe, Japan and South Korea. But Americans love to buy European and Japanese cars.

People are just getting lazier than ever. Soon, they'll demand a car that opens its doors and starts up without having to do anything. THOSE are the ones who won't know what to do if the computer fails and goes to manual driving mode as a backup.

    The worst thing they're killing off - fun.
    People love a bit of torque steer, a bit of unruly power under the hood that you have to wrestle with, responsive handling and feeling the road under the wheels. Driving isn't just an obligation. It's an experience and imo one of life's joys.
    Ramming them full of pointless gadgets and electronic control is missing the point, I don't even like shift indicators - shut up car, I'm driving and I'll decide when I change gear thank you very much. Modern cars have so little personality it really is shameful, and it shows in the adverts. It used to be all about the 0-60, the driving experience, now its 'we installed a sat nav', it has parking sensors in case you're too retarded to just learn the length of your vehicle and you can fit a dog and three kids in the back, and still have room for the groceries- because apparently I often take the dog shopping for some reason.
    Even sports or performance cars are rammed full of pointless crap that takes you out of the driving experience, and the new ST's bragging about its economy and the fact its 2.0 engine is so shitty it has to have a computer make the noise of an actually good one is symptomatic. I'm meant to get a tyre squealing ten miles to the gallon, and sound like thor having an argument with the lightning he just threw, it's meant to make me choose between leaving little Jimmy briefly home alone because there aren't any back seats a human can fit into or driving my daily runner so he doesn't scribble on the walls in permanent marker, its meant to take up my entire garage because I'm doing my own bodywork and tinkering, it's meant to be a colossal waste of money just driving the thing for no reason because its so damn nice - thats the point of it!
    Hopefully car enthusiasts can cling on to the market and keep them producing some gems - seeing the death of my beloved five pot engine is tragic. Bye bye baby v10 =(

      One of the best comments I think I've ever read. You know, it's all up to us, the car enthusiasts, to push for driver experience. Hopefully someone like you or I will do something about all this that we're losing and keep this alive. I believe that at the very least, we'll be the ones holding on to our automotive treasures and keeping the traditions we feel are sacred alive for the next generation to learn about and experience.

      SL1MSH4DY96 You speak the truth, my brother. Someone asked me a while ago if I really enjoyed driving or if I just enjoyed the mobility cars afford. I wish you would have been there to explain it to them. Mobility is simply a convenience...driving the car, working on the car is what we love and now we almost can't do that. First no changing gear because manuals are 'slow' and 'inefficient', then electric steering (I will not own a car with an electric steering rack because fuck that), now they want to get rid of us all together and then for whatever reason manufacturers want to get DMCA protection on the vehicles. It's sad, man. Everyone else treats their cars like appliances, like a coffee machine or an iron, and this is tuining the landscape for us who do this car thing because it's emotional; something a lot of people don't get because they dont have hobbies or interests that engender the kind of feeling or passion a car can stir. It's this irrational affair with a box of glass, steel and rubber that does nothing but sit there costing money and breaking whenever you get careless with it. The car as we know and love it is dying; it is just my fervent hope that the aftermarket can keep it going for just a little while longer before we are all banished to garages and sheds, getting around in shared hackable, emotionless digital grey boxes. And yeah who goes shopping with the dog?

There's only so much they can do though, crash and safety regulations, as well as the air-con and all the other sorts of stuff a car NEEDS to have to sell in decent numbers these days means we'll probably never have "normal" 4 or 5 door family cars that weigh about 1000kg again...

    1.) Analog dials! Beautiful analog dials!
    2.) Numbers on cars that actually mean something. Like BMW 330is: the 1st 3 means 3 series, the 30 means 3.0 liters of displacement, and the "s" for sport.
    3.) Manual transmissions. Furthermore, why did the car industry stop evolving the technology of the manual transmission.
    4.) Beautiful symmetrical interiors that flowed. When screens started to be 1st put into automobiles they were integrated well into the interior. Now, many companies put tacked on screens that looks like something that came out from Autozone. Case in point, Mercedes Benz is notorious for this.
    5.) Big ass titties. I mean really big sickening ones that if you got a handle on them, well, you might not just make it. Just like the video said above, "danger is FUN".

      @original comment, while I agree it would make more sense to name, say the BMW 335i, a BMW330ti or something, its kind of tacky since all of their cars are turbo charged now. BTW the second two numbers didn't always stand for displacement. Especially with the V8 BMWs, they often were not the same numbers as the displacement (I believe there was a 540i with a 4.4l V8).
      What manufacturers are doing now is naming their cars based on the equivalent power output, so a 335i with a 3.0t engine is supposedly making power equivalent to that of a 3.5l NA engine (~300HP). It actually makes a lot more sense if you ask me

      Agreed, I had to do some work on my uncles truck for him, had to replace the A/C compressor, belt tensioner, spark plugs, air cleaner, and the belt itself. it was super easy. just popped the belt off, undid the bolts holding everything on, and everything could just be pulled off, and the replacements bolted back into place, with the only thing needing to be moved out of the way was the airbox, which was only held in by a single screw

    Seamless turbo integration is the saddest thing i have ever learnt about. Nothing can compare to a sudden massive push in the back when a turbo spools up and forces air and fuel through the compressor into the cylinders. It is such a rush and is intoxicating.

    MANUAL TRANSMISSION specifically in america. Im in college and i daily a 5 speed BMW 325xi and when people see I drive stick, they don't even know what it is. everyone I know has an automatic, and I've really only met a very small handful of people on campus who still truly appreciate a manual gearbox w/ clutch. I constantly get stupid questions like "isnt it difficult on long distance trips" and "isnt it bad for snowy or wet conditions?" those questions give me a physical headache

    • @richardemms3050
      @richardemms3050 6 років тому

      I understand people asking about snowy conditions, in some cases an auto is better for that. However for long distance trips, manual is fine, it is around town it might actually be difficult.

      Kian Duesing sadly we'll never see a return in mechanical stuff. Car Manufacturers make their stuff so complicated that you have to take it to an actual mechanic or in their favor a dealer. Which in turn the dealer shares some money with the brand itself

    Before I clicked the video my first thought was they have to mention the fact there is new handbrake (e brake)but turns it out didn't. So I scroll down and I see that a lot people agree that the old classic pulling handbrake is the main thing that's missing in new cars. The fact there's too much incessant technology on the vehicle. Also the fact the cars feels plastic and light. I miss the old metal cars which is much stronger and well built. Hence why I got VW MK5 Golf GTI 👌🏾
