Apple Looping Pedal? How to Turn Logic Pro X 10.5 into a LOOP Pedal!

  • Hey Y’all Here’s the quick and easy way to set up the new Live Loops Section of Logic and a MIDI controller to create your own loop pedal style device.
    After you’ve opened a new project
    1.Create your Tracks
    2.Enter the Live Loops View of the arrangement window
    3.Assign your MIDI device by:
    Go to LOGIC X--- Control Surfaces --- Controller Assignments…
    4.Select your MIDI device in the Zone Column
    5.Assign Record (or what ever button or control you want) with the parameter ‘Record Into Cell’ in the Key Command: Global Commands
    6.Assign Forward to ‘Select Next Track’
    7.Assign Rewind to ‘Select Previous Track’
    Now you can record into the Live loops cell through one touch recording on your MIDI device.
    To record
    -Select your first track and hit Record
    -Hitting Record again will stop recording but keep the Audio Looping
    -To Layer another loop hit Forward and Record to add another layer to the loop
    -You can repeat this as much as you like and use your reassigned forward and rewind buttons to navigate the loop layers
    This would be especially useful utilizing a MIDI foot pedal to allow for hands free looping! Enjoy.

    Do I have to pre-determine the bar length and tempo, and then follow it, or will logic automatically sync to the length I determine with the pedal? (like a real looping pedal) ? thanks !

    I like your setup. is it possible, without metronome, to record the first cell and let logic determine the tempo/measures, then use for the rest of the project?
    effectively, i want to make it act like a rc300 would when starting to loop

      @@exitdown I ultimately went with ableton and used the looper plugin to get my first track in... that set the tempo. then i transfer it into a cell and clear the looper track.
      didn't figure it out in logic but there's probably something similar

    will it work in the sense that the loop you establish loops automatically until you stop it? Does it go seamlessly from one loop to the next?

    • @danielfoose
      @danielfoose  4 роки тому

      Yes exactly the default is each loop layer will run continuously until you stop it. Yes Its been pretty seamless in the little time I've been using it when transitioning between loops.

    So interesting. I’ve got a new Bluetooth AIRSTEP pedal (it doesn’t show up in the controllers column on the left side of the Controller Assignments panel, though it is connected and it is operating the basic transport controls. But no matter how I change the Record to Record into Cell etc, Logic carries on as a standard linear DAW and ignores the cell records options, even though clearly armed. Any ideas? Many thanks again: even so, a steep learning curve!

    • @kevinpower6881

      Thanks again for the video. I finally got this to owrk and wanted to let folks know how: when selecting from the huge menu of controls options, it's important also to select Key Commands and Global Commands. In fact, I've also managed to get this working with a Blueboard and the big advantage (if you're an acoustic musician) is that the pedalboard makes to click sound whatsoever. Once you pair Blueboard with Mac (Audio Midi Setup) you use the Learn Mode tool to map each of its four controllers: in my case, I map A and B up Up and Down Track (which moves up and down cells if cells are open, or tracks if tracks are open); then button C is set to Record into Cell and button D to Record. That way I have basic record control in both cells and tracks. The airstep offers far more (and far easier) customization but, as I say, it really only suits someone who's going direct in with an instrument rather than an acoustic musician.

    • @giraffey8974
      @giraffey8974 3 роки тому +1

      Hello, are you able to map the commands via your airstep pedal in logic pro live?

    • @PoetryFilms
      @PoetryFilms 3 роки тому

      @@giraffey8974 if I understand you correctly I’d say the answer is probably no. The AIRSTEP is very flexible and can be mapped to a vast number of controls in Live but I believe you must make those connections in advance rather than do it ‘live’ or ‘on the fly’. I might be wrong but I can’t imagine any way to do that, or revise existing settings, in a live (I.e. playing) situation. Hope that helps you!

    thanks! If i have to use both hands on the instrument to record a four bar beat the loop always ends up being five bars, since recording to the cell seems to be resetting the set cell length. Any ideas how to avoid this?

    • @danielfoose
      @danielfoose  4 роки тому +2

      Sure, one way is to set the Recording Length of the cell by clicking on the cell which brings up the Cell inspector in the left. at the bottom there is a menu option labeled 'Rec-Length' which is Default set to Automatic (Bars) but you change to Cell Length and set that length in the same Inspector menu. I know what you're talking about you kind of have to lead the loop trigger on the initial Loop a little to get it to sync right. I definitely see a midi foot controller in my future! Enjoy.

      @@murahachibu See my comment and reply to my own comment above. If you're not recording acoustic instruments, Airstep is fantastic and very flexible. For acoustic instruments, Blueboard is the way to go (but make sure you get the version with the firmware update: v1 is horrible and, after months of trying to get it working with a Mac, I gave up and bought the upgrade which worked almost immediately
