  • Thinking about spray painting your car or vehicle at home in your garage or driveway? This is the video I would have wanted to watch when I was setting out to DIY respray our VW. As a beginner I show my mistakes and how I corrected them, giving you a beginner's guide to achieve a professional respray paint job. I used a waterbased base coat and a 2k clear lacquer.
    To see how I made a super cheap DIY compressed air system for this spray job check out my previous video here: goo.gl/HB9bHk
    Be a making, upcycling and modding rock star and subscribe to my channel goo.gl/7tFFPu ;)
    Tools and Materials used for this paint job
    The Italian ANi F160 HPS Spray Gun £87 ebay.to/2JKUxKt
    ANI In line air regulator £17 goo.gl/G5HhGG
    In line filter and moisture trap £10 goo.gl/yhbihX
    Bosch 6" random orbit sander - a fine tool I already had goo.gl/D5j1LX
    Octoral Waterbase eco Car Paint Mixed From Colour Code 4L - £119.80 - expensive, but goes a long way and is good quality stuff.
    Smart Product Lacquer 5L + Fast Activator 2.5L £65 goo.gl/Lyv75T
    Panel Wipe De-greaser 5L- £13
    TACK Cloths Water Based Box of 10 £ 4.50
    Safety: 3M 6800 full face equivalent which means it's a cheaper import (only about $30 here: goo.gl/kVGmyk), but I use it with the genuine 3m 6001 vapour filters. (ebay link: goo.gl/PNXNEq). Remember to use pre-filters too goo.gl/WJgk5Q. Cover up all skin and ears with a hood and stay safe friends!

    The 26 steps in this video
    00:25 Step 1 - Cleaning the whole car and any tar spots.
    00:55 Step 2 - Using the random orbit sander to remove the outer layers of paint and roughen the surface ready to painting.
    01:25 Step 3 - Cleaning off the sanding dust and what the types of paint dust mean.
    02:02 Step 4 - Making the workshop into a paint "spray booth".
    02:40 Step 5 - Epic cleaning and the importance of cleanliness while painting.
    03:04 Step 6 - Preparing new replacement body panels (I use them as test pieces).
    04:07 Step 7 - Preparing the spray gun holder
    05:00 Step 8 -- Lessons learned from the first mistakes made spray painting the test panels. Tack clothing too early can be a problem, especially with water based paints! Why to use water based paint and what to expect.
    07:20 Step 9 - More mistakes with the bonnet, and how to correct and prevent them. The correct use of panel wipe solvent and how to do a "half" first coat.
    09:29 Step 10 - Dialling in the settings and getting the first few water based colour coats on.
    11:04 Step 11 - Mixing and spraying the first 2k clear coats and safety concerns with 2k lacquer.
    12:21 Step 12 - How to test the clear coat so you know when to spray on the next coat.
    12:55 Step 13 - Cleaning the spray gun.
    13:37 Step 14 - Bringing the van into the workshop "spray booth".
    14:13 Step 15 - Mask up the areas you don't want paint on.
    14:35 Step 16 - Primer spraying the areas of the van that are back to bare metal or filler.
    14:52 Step 17 - More filler applied to the cracks - sanded and primed ready for base coat painting.
    15:11 Step 18 - Panel wipe and tack cloth.
    15:37 Step 19 - First 0.5 colour coat.
    15:56 Step 20 - Tack when dry.
    16:06 Step 21 - First Full coat of waterbased colour.
    16:36 Step 22 - Refilling the paint and continuing.
    16:45 Step 23 - Have a snack, tack and second coat.
    17:18 Step 24 - Three coats of 2k clear.
    17:37 Step 24.5 - Talk about how the paint cured, taking the masking tape away and the results.
    18:58 Step 25 - Using a DIY Razor to remove little paint problems on the window.
    19:13 Step 26 - Road Trip in the freshly painted van! Talk about how the job went :)

    As a pro sprayer I would say that this video is more informative than one showing someone blowing over a car in a professional booth as the things that can go wrong and putting them right is a huge part of automotive bodywork spray painting.
    The fact you were analysing as you worked means you will become very good at this kind of work and your first attempt was not half bad :)

      Hi,I'm regards to the van going to blue immediately upon sanding ,it was most likely painted in a 2k top coat,meaning the paint goes on and dries with a shine without needin clearcoat over the top,probably the type of paint I would have used on a van but the waterbase paint and clearcoat you used will not dull down over time,also solid colours like this are very forgiving,as long as you have good coverage you can usually flood up alot of the finer scratches or imperfections with the clearcoat,however on a job like this in future then I would definitely consider using 2k,also when you based up the bonet,it would have been fine after clearcoat,great job for a novice though ,many would be scared to take this job on

    There are a few channels I watch as soon a video is up. Your's is one of them. The mistakes teach you way more than the smooth sailing camera perfect recipes. One question I had after watching this video is: what are the most "popular" other options for car painting. I am sure those came up during your research, and it will be nice to summarize what they are.

    • @FloweringElbow
      @FloweringElbow  5 років тому

      BillyFromAHilly Place, that really means a lot to me, so nice to hear, thanks so much :D
      In terms of other options, a very common standard method would be using 2k base and 2k clear. Some people go the rattle can rout - but that's more fiddly, slow, hard to do well and can cost more in materials (in my experience). I wanted to get setup for pro-grade spraying of other projects anyway...
      I think another popular option is using a single produce that acts as both base and lacquer in one... I didn't want to use that because I think that's what the van was re-sprayed with before we got it - and it doesn't last anything like as well with uv exposure, as a good base and 3 coats of quality 2k clear. It's quicker and cheaper though, and I think people tend to do it before selling on a vehicle...
      There are other options, but those are the main ones I considered...

    • @zgabarici
      @zgabarici 5 років тому

    Thank you kindly for an excellent video. I bought a project car in August 2020 and have recently got a 100L air compressor and a Devilbiss SLG620 1.3mm and a few cheapo guns and inline filters. I've also bought myself a gazebo cos I am not blessed with a garage or indoor working area, so looks like I'll be waiting a little while till I can get started. But your video is exceptionally good and you've done a great job on your van. I think I'm going to be using standard acrylic solvent basecoat rather than water based just due to the flash off times. One thing that worries me is using 2K clear due to the isocyanates. Are there any good 1K clears you might be able to recommend? I know they're not as durable but one that could withstand British weather and the regular Mancunian downpours we suffer from up north for at least 1/2 years or so would be great. Matte preferably but gloss wouldn't be a killer either. Thanks again :)

    • @FloweringElbow
      @FloweringElbow  3 роки тому

      Good morning Haseeb. Thank you for your comment and for watching. Sounds like you have thought through the challenges. It is wise to be concerned about the dangers of 2k paint. Sadly I have no experience with 1k clear coat (there than a tiny bit with Halfords rattle cans), so can't really recommend anything sorry. I think if I was to do over, I would have bitten the bullet and bought an external air supply mask... Good luck with it!

      @@FloweringElbow thanks for your reply mate. Much obliged. I've seen a Upol one that has got some good reviews and a few on the Arc Rite website, advertised for military vehicles and references its durability - I'll probably exhaust every avenue before going for a 2K clear, and will probably pay a bodyshop to lay it for me if I'm pushed. Again, my thanks for the video - I'll likely watch this a hundred more times to properly learn the technique before trying it myself on a few scrap panels :)

    Nice job. Scuff all surfaces with the Red 3M pads. De-grease tremendously, as it has a way to get under the paint and impossible to remove later. When it is ready to paint, hit all of the repaired / primed areas first. Get them to be as consistent as the original colors, as... You can probably now get by with just 2 coats on the whole thing. It looks like you were well dialed in when you got to the clear coat. We all cant afford to have spray booths, and so just accept there will be some dirt and bugs. It looks much better now.

    • @FloweringElbow
      @FloweringElbow  3 роки тому

      Good morning Geraed, thanks for watching and your comment. The reason I didn't prime it all is simply that I didn't have much primer paint - only a couple of cheap rattle cans. The bits where the original paint was sound and sanded down made for a nice ready-to-paint surface and so didn't need priming.
      There are different kinds of primer - acid etch vs epoxy, for example. - some of them do not like going on anything other than bare metal, ie. they don't stick well to existing paint.
      I believe epoxy primer is good in this regard - sticking to both bare metal and paint, but needs painting over while still tacky or extra work in roughing up to give a key for the colour coat... Lots of details to it all. What's that machine? I have been considering painting the 35-year-old JCB we have ua-cam.com/video/zl3cMUTxIg0/v-deo.html
      Cheers for now, Bongo.

I'm about the least qualified to advise you one this, but I have seen people both wet sand very fine) and re-apply, and people also use a cocktail stick and dab on clear coat. Just put fixing fish eyes in clear coat into youtube search... Good luck!

      @K Man Hi. I used only 1K products. I put the primer on and left for about two days to harden. I then sanded with 600 and degreased. I then applied 3x coats of base coat, Left for 30-60mins and then applied final coats of clear. I noticed the fish eyes appearing when applying the clear. Can I sand back down to base coat and work from there?

    The best clear coat that you can use is the "OH MY" 2k clear from BuyCustomPaint.com . Easy to spray, no cutting or buffing required ... if you watch THE LAST 5 mins of this video ua-cam.com/video/XwBl53nql4I/v-deo.html you will see how great this clear is... its definitely worth checking out...

    People who went through this before they can see his mistakes .but if you don't try it yourself you will never get it.
    Starting from the "spray booth" and yo the final finish.
    You can make a list of his mistakes but the main thing is experience. More experience.
    As gunman says "just spray some shit" try some
    I wouldn't advise waterbased for the first time garage use(solvent is easy to apply,cheaper,if anything wrong just sand a bit and recoat,drying in minutes,
    Water for spray booth and big warm airflow.)
    Use masking film on the ceiling walls and floor. Just stop all that shite from the shelves and lights on the ceiling to fly on your clear.
    Use water on the floor .from hose,plenty .not a spay mist
    Take off everything you can off the car.moldings .mirrors etc .rubber .use j tape to unfold all the rubbers from the body so you can spray past that line.
    The list is never ending .
    Simply just try a few panels from start to finish and then do the whole car.get a feel of the gun.the distance from the panel .the speed .all the adjustments on the gun ,air pressure,water in the airline, .bla bla bla)))
    If you do.more then one car buy most expensive gun you can afford (devilbiss gti pro or pro lite,haha)
    Good luck to all the beginners and UA-cam here to help us!!!

    There is an argument for using what seems to be more environmentally noxious paint if it lasts a lot longer. My car is 30 years old now and the cars ( of the same model) painted the year after with water based paint, are very rusty and most get scrapped, mine has no rust and can last many more years. Remember the cars of Cuba are the most environmentally sound because they are very old. Waisting the first batch was also an environmental burden. Sorry for ranting, I am going to continue enjoying the film now that I got that off my chest.

    • @FloweringElbow
      @FloweringElbow  5 років тому +1

      Completely agree with you. It's all a compramise. With a lack of access to good data on matter it is really hard to know the best options sometimes.
      I was left really liking the water based base coat because it went on so well and didn't make me want to pass out if I slipped my mask off for a second. Still wanted to clear coat with the durable 2k stuff though...
