Been a class two driver for 15 years and been in my current role for nearly ten years. I am very lucky to have a decent and supportive employer, I work hard and have a great relationship with my Operations manager and transport managers, the wage is fair for what I do. car drivers seem to be more aggressive than they used to be. The job is not for everyone, its a great job as long as you keep in mind that you are a professional driver and take your role as a driver seriously to keep yourself and other around you safe. great talk about the job post six months of passing, and I wish you safe travels xx
This video popped up in my recommendations and really enjoyed it. I’ve been driving since 2006 and still love it and it’s nice to be reminded when it was all new to me and I was going through the same stuff you are! Safe travels, and I’ll look out for you on the road :)
I can relate to everything you have said haha! The headache's at the beginning were shocking & the 56mph in the car is very true aswell.... But it does get very 'Second nature' driving a class 2 & it becomes easier to drive than a car. Good video Hayley, Good to see you are still enjoying it. Any thoughts of Class 1? ;)
Hi Deady, I said in the video I don't want to do class 1 yet as I enjoy the multi drop work and find the distance work boring. I know class 1 isn't all distance but I'm happy with what I'm doing at the moment and I don't want to lose that. Congratulations on getting yours by the way! :D
I'm a coach driver and i do exactly the same in my car. If i go anywhere and stop at the services in the car i have to remind myself not to go into the coach bays, i also take wide turns and stick my nose out at junctions..it's force of habit. We also flash our lights and wave at each other .
Great vlog Haley glad to see you back some great thoughts on your six months being a h.g.v driver keep up the good work and be safe cant wait to see your next vlog
Hayley, be aware that many many years of jumping down off trucks flatbeds may mean later on in life you’ll have problems with your knees or hips. Take it easy and try and prevent landing hard from jumping from the flatbed. I know truck drivers who have had to have hip replacements in their late 50 early 60s.
Hayley ... recently found your Vlog and it's great to see you following your instinct ... If transport is in your blood you will enjoy it for many years. I was your company's first apprentice HGV mechanic in 1964 (then called W A Cooper 'Transport' Ltd Coven Heath Wolverhampton) a family concern headed by Tony Kay. I truly enjoyed being with them until spreading my wings to move on and remain in heavy vehicle repairs and operations for fifty years. Now 70 years old and retired it is a pleasure to see you representing an old established and rarely publicised company so well .......... Drive well, stay safe and good luck with your career ....... PS .... If boss David gets to read this, I accidentally backed over his new bicycle when he was about 5 years old .... Sorry David .... his uncle Alan tried to repair it but his dad (Tony) had to buy another .... Mum (Beryl) was not pleased !!!!
Hi, it's really interesting to hear about the history of the company. I will try and make sure I tell David about this at some point when I see him. I'm sure there will be no hard feelings over the bike, haha. I'll let you know! :)
Finally caught up on your vlogs over last few weeks. Well done, it amazes me, viewing from #1 to date, the change in your adaptation to driving, very brave to show your new career. Many thanks for sharing and best regards from the Black Country. John
Hi John, thank you for taking the time to follow my journey up to this point. I really appreciate all of your comments. I was hoping that maybe the videos would help or inspire others to change something if they aren't happy with it. All the best... also from the Black Country! Hayley :)
@@TruckDriverHayley Thank you for replying, it's very difficult to write constructive (hopefully) comment, without being patronising. Born in Bilston, brought up in Coseley, then moving to Wombourne in 1990, it's quite interesting to see various routes of yours, and the change/urban regeneration where applicable, I used to travel quite a lot in my job in engineering, but it's very much local, if any now. What a lovely person you are 😄 You’ve made some fantastic honest comments well done 👍🏻 I’ve been driving HGV 1s for 45 years now and coming to the end of a variety of jobs covering the U.K. and Europe 😄 It’s been lonely sometimes but also rewarding when you meet up with fellow colleagues and have a good old catch up 😄 Well done keep safe Stevie x

I have just found your channel,I really enjoyed it.I am retired after 50 years finished up on tankers. Not being sarcastic i think most good looking blue eyed blonde drivers will have friends. Look forward to your next video.
I do multi temp, multi drop and have done for 5 years now as a class 2 driver... I've lost 5 stone now form when I started... 20+ drops a day dragging cages round, the weight soon falls off you. Glad your enjoying it Hayley keep it up great videos 👌👍
Worked in a factory then an office for 46 years, been retired ten. Know exactly what you mean about following the seasons. Only used to see the sky at weekends. Shouldn't be allowed, treat like battery hens. Very interesting post.
Great vlog as usual Hayley. Passed my class 2 in Dec & my CPC in Jan, still looking for a job though. It’s been difficult due to family commitments to find a job that suits, but I’m not giving up. Anyway, keep the vlogs coming 😎
Only been driving a class 2 for 6 weeks but can already relate to quite a lot of what you mentioned. Atm, I’m finding it pretty stressful still being new but hopefully things will get easier soon. Awesome video! 😀
Hi, great video depicting your 6 months driving HGVs I truly respect your point of view regarding class 1, not like a person we know that it is eager to catch up with class 1 vloggers with hardly any experience in class 2.
One of the first things I noticed was how rude people are to wagon drivers which makes you stand up for yourself like you say. But it's funny how lorry drivers are grumpy but will help each other out.
Nice to see you back, glad you are still enjoying life on the road after six months. I found that many of your thoughts and observations would resonate with many drivers including myself when we started lorry driving. As i went from a more physical job to lorry driving i put weight on even though we were manually sheeting and roping back then, and going to use controls in other vehicles still happens to this day. As you say you feel that you suit the job you are doing, i think that is the basis for been happy in your work which will lead to less stress and overall a better life in general. You may find that although the money was one of the good things about the job, that it is not so important in the grand scheme of things as your happiness, freedom and the feeling that to some extent you are the master or in your case mistress of your day. Oh and thinking like a lorry driver never leaves you. Last year during motorcycle training i was given a rough route and destination, at the end i was questioned why i had not gone down into Matlock town centre, "it's a weight limit" followed by the realisation that i was on a bike! Hope you get more videos up more regularly, we've missed you these last few weeks. All the best.
Haha, that's a funny story about the bike and weight limit. Thanks for your kind words as always. More videos are coming, I promise. Best wishes to you :)
I was an HGV1 driver for 8 years, an English pronunciation teacher for 18 years and now I passed my medical, got my CPC and digitacho back and have just passed a driver retraining and assessment (not compulsory). I love both jobs, with different advantages and disadvantages to each.
Well done on refusing to carry chemicals. I’m a sameday courier (I drive a small van), another courier I do subcontract work for asked me to carry a CO2 cylinder but I refused. Even though there are exemptions from full ADR training for small quantities of certain items as I understand it you still need to have certified ADR awareness training, carry a 2kg dry powder extinguisher and have appropriate insurance cover on your vehicle before you can carry small quantities.
Or if your Irish you call up to see what the crack is lol. Good video. I've been driving artics for 2 years now. I got a degree and wanted to be an accountant tried it and hates it. Now I'm an Irish trucker. Artic driving is a lot easier than you think. Have a great day
Just keep on doing what you enjoy Haley, don't take any bullshit from anyone including other drivers and bosses. Good luck. Mike class 1 since forever lol
Great video Hayley, you said in there you weren’t thinking of doing your class1 because you were happy doing the class2 multi drop work, that’s great! I would just like to make some points about the difference that you may or not be aware of... When thinking of taking the class 1 training and test think of the cost typically around £1200! So that’s something to consider, now unlike class2 driving, class1 is generally longer hours 10-12 hours a day, can also be weekend work, tramping and nights away also come with some (not all) jobs, you also get the added stress of driving a bigger truck and what that means on the road and also turning around and finding decent places to park etc don’t get me started on reversing, it’s just a completely different job in a class1 truck, don’t get me wrong I enjoy some of the work but sometimes it can get stressful, the main point I wanted to make is that unless you work 50-60 hours a week you won’t earn much more than the work your doing, maybe £1 or £2 an hour more that’s it!! So is it really worth it when your happy doing that Hayley? Probably not stay with what your happy doing!! Fair play I like your videos, keep up the good work 👍🏼
Thanks for the comment Dazzer, you're absolutely right. The hourly rate at my company is only £1 more for class 1 but you top it up with nights out, weekends, etc. The company would pay for my training for class 1, so it wouldn't cost me anything, but I am happy with what I have right now and I don't want to lose that. All the best to you :D
Truck Driver Hayley thanks Hayley, I was lucky because I could save up for my class1 so after 7 years driving class2 I decided to take it. Pressure was on as my Dad was a artic driver for over 35 years! I used to DJ back in the day and I made the choice to sell all my records and equipment so that raised the funds, I would say that paying out of your own pocket does pile the pressure on but if your company are willing to pay it may be something to consider as there will be less pressure without the cost, I was always thinking ‘what if I fail, that’s £1200 down the drain’. I also wanted to say that as a agency driver Ive not done over 12/13 hours a day and never done a night out on class1 again this may be different for others. Thanks and all the best for 2020
Your doing great Hayley! I stated class 2 in 2003 and did multidrop for 4 years mostly garments Then did my Class 1 in 2007 and tramped nights for nearly 5 years on Stobarts then a few different companies and now back on Class 2 most of the time on steel work around Norfolk/Suffolk and love it! No more tramping now for 3 years mon-fri
Hi Hayley, thank you for sharing. I am trying to persuade myself to get on hgv course. Quite struggle, I am a small woman ( 160cm, 59kg), can't imagine how manage to get on with the giant "monster".
Been driving class 2 for 25 years now and when I get in the car to go home after driving the lorry 10 hours a day, it still feels like I'm sitting on the floor 😁 drove an automatic the other day started off in 4th gear and had 12 years was only 2 years old too slow at pulling away give me a manual every time
great thoughts Hayley, i am at a bit of a crossroads at the moment, i passed my class 2 4 years ago after being in the steel industry for 30 years and i am employed as an overhead crane driver on good shifts and decent money not great but ok.i did a bit of agency work which was ok but i would really like to get my teeth in to something new similar to what you are doing type of work. How did you approach the company without any real experience? Keep up the great vids and best wishes for the future.
Hi, I just went to the haulage company with my CV, tacho card, licence, etc and asked them if there was any vacancies. Luckily, they had 2 drivers who were moving up to class 1 in the next month so they said they'd start me on if they passed. I believe face to face is the best way so you can try and make a good impression. The work I ended up doing is a contract the haulage company have with a factory, I didn't know this when I first went there. I was happy to take whatever they'd give me as a new pass. Good luck finding something :)
Hi Hayley! Been loving your channel as of late, had a question, in your experience how physically demanding do you feel HGV driving is? Eg Lifting & Straps, I don't have the greatest back!
That's a very hard question to answer. Best answer is: it depends on the job. Some jobs really are much, much easier than others, some are really tough.
Hi, I think like Neil said, it depends on the job. My work involves everything being put on the lorry with a forklift and taken off with a forklift, there is no handball. The only physical work I do is climbing up to put the straps on and walking around to open the curtains. My work is also multi drop so I'm in and out of the lorry a lot during the day. Of course, I get stuck in as much as I can and might try and move some of the things around on the lorry, although a forklift driver will help you if something needs moving. I think you'd be okay with something like what I do, but maybe not with jobs that involve a lot of handball. Just make sure to check that before you apply etc
Unfortunately, people try to take advantage of me all the time too - I'm only 18 and in a Class 2. So many people are rude to drivers in this industry. Just last week I was spat at and nearly dragged out of my cab, all because I refused to take ADR goods. Other than that, it's a fun job!
Some people are very rude, I can't understand why people are like this when we are the ones doing them a favour really either bringing them work or delivering their work. A relative always used to say to me, "whatever you have in your house it was on a lorry at some point". It's true, the country would be a mess without us.
Treat people the way you’d like to be treated and remember it’s their problem if they can’t be civil, some of these people will talk to you like your a dog especially at your age, but don’t get bitter some of them actually turn out ok.
My average start time is usually 3am . And as for the job itself it's not what it was . After 30 years in the industry I've thought about a change in career...
Thanks for your kind words. I have got a bit better at talking to the camera since I started. It's just like being in the classroom really, it's like I was talking to myself there most of the time as well. lol :)
@@TruckDriverHayley hopefully I will get better at talking to the camera soon it really does make the video content better, I know what I want to say but as soon as the camera is on record i am a jibbering jelly Ha Ha !
I write down the things I want to say and then cut it out of the video if I say it wrong or if there is a long pause. Some of the first ones were funny, I should post a blooper video really. Really embarrassing lol
Hi I gave you like, subscribe because you deserve it .really I liked the way you presented your 6 months experience . The only thing I liked very much is you are not exaggerating like other drivers do .whether they liked or disliked . You just telling as your experience with out exaggerating finally keep going
i was going to ask if you found yourself driving wider in your car and driving differently. i found my self doing this and my friends couldn't understand why i drive differently
I'm not allowed to discuss my wage (my company won't let me) but you can look around job sites for class 2 work to try and get an idea. Sorry I can't help anymore than that :(
I can't answer that question... I've never had to use a service station as most of my work is multi drop around Birmingham. There probably are though if the men's have them :)
hiya i am night driver for currie Solutions in class one truck it not all bout night out you can do days night diff shift of ur chose if that way you want to go plus i find it more fun in class one than class 2 so but end of the day it what you think that right for you at the time of doing it so
With you having that Mindset from driving a HGV, do you find yourself wanting to switch on your Car’s Hazard Lights before Reversing? At least driving a Lorry can teach you more about driving so you are more mindful of others on the road!
Truck Driver Hayley yes Hayley is also right there, I’m the worst for that when I make a mistake I always beat myself up about it and worry but I do soon get over it, it depends on the individual some drivers don’t give a s**t and just carry on.... wait till you take a mudguard off you feel a right prat but everyone does it haha, just laugh it off it’s only a couple of clips to repair it!!👍🏼
@@TruckDriverHayley I tend to go down the m6 as leave deeside about 3am and then comming back go the m6 but if there is a problem on it back on a483. As I get about 11 to 12 mpg using the m6.
Jump ship and get a job driving a bin truck with the council haulage firms are nearly all the same the way they treat drivers im sure it would be no stress fixed hours good money good pension and good hols early start early finish if you want to see the counrty get a PSV and drive a coach for a tour company
Check out truckmateuk on Facebook. Also don't be intimidated by class 1 they aren't as hard to drive as you might think. I find class 1 easier to drive than class 2

Thanks Peter! No, just cheeky adults now!! :D haha
Hi Hayley, thank you for sharing. I am trying to persuade myself to get on hgv course. Quite struggle, I am a small woman ( 160cm, 59kg), can't imagine how manage to get on with the giant "monster".
You'd be surprised. You find your own ways of doing things :)
I look for the exhaust brake in my car - Damn... aint got one !!
Been driving class 2 for 25 years now and when I get in the car to go home after driving the lorry 10 hours a day, it still feels like I'm sitting on the floor 😁 drove an automatic the other day started off in 4th gear and had 12 years was only 2 years old too slow at pulling away give me a manual every time
My car feels like a go-kart, haha. Manual for the win! :)
great thoughts Hayley, i am at a bit of a crossroads at the moment, i passed my class 2 4 years ago after being in the steel industry for 30 years and i am employed as an overhead crane driver on good shifts and decent money not great but ok.i did a bit of agency work which was ok but i would really like to get my teeth in to something new similar to what you are doing type of work. How did you approach the company without any real experience?
Keep up the great vids and best wishes for the future.
deane9050 if you’ve got a license, you’ll get a job .
Just be honest with them , everyone starts somewhere.
@@saintjohn6820 i need a new challenge. i am very bored with the job i am doing it is driving me nuts. Thank you John
deane9050 only you can change this my friend.
Truck Driver Hayley Thank you Hayley and all the best to ye
Nice vid I’m doing my class 2 now woop! Just revising the theory there’s a lot to take in Its tough
Try to do an hour a day if you can. I found that writing out my own notes and drawing my own diagrams helped. Good luck with it Jon :)
All week in truck then back in car at weekends I have tried to split gears in my car before lol 😂 good video’s
Stuart Pardner I always tap the end of the windscreen wiper stick in my car thinking I’m in the truck pressing the retarder 😂😂
@@Pinza7 Cheers for the input! I'll keep doing a bit of research into it, make sure I'm physically able. Thanks!
@@TruckDriverHayley Thanks for the words Hayley!
11 stone!!!!! That’s the weight of one of my legs😂😂😂😂
My average start time is usually 3am . And as for the job itself it's not what it was . After 30 years in the industry I've thought about a change in career...
Fantastic insight for my future career.. 😀
I actually lost weight in this job too, it's more active than ppl think.
I hate, hate, hate the early mornings tho.
Great Vlog Hayley love the way to talk so naturally to the camera wish I could !! Keep on Trucking !
I tried reversing double decker bus down a narrow l and I was leaning out the window the one you slide across would u lean out
Hi I gave you like, subscribe because you deserve it .really I liked the way you presented your 6 months experience . The only thing I liked very much is you are not exaggerating like other drivers do .whether they liked or disliked . You just telling as your experience with out exaggerating finally keep going
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video :)
i was going to ask if you found yourself driving wider in your car and driving differently. i found my self doing this and my friends couldn't understand why i drive differently
Yes I do. Sometimes I scare my passengers 😁
What's the average wage for the hours you're working? Cheers and keep up the gd work.
I'm not allowed to discuss my wage (my company won't let me) but you can look around job sites for class 2 work to try and get an idea. Sorry I can't help anymore than that :(
Nice one Hayley
great talk
i often wondered do you have showers in the ladies loo's at service stations like the men's have?
I can't answer that question... I've never had to use a service station as most of my work is multi drop around Birmingham. There probably are though if the men's have them :)
What lorry satnav do you use?
hiya i am night driver for currie Solutions in class one truck it not all bout night out you can do days night diff shift of ur chose if that way you want to go plus i find it more fun in class one than class 2 so but end of the day it what you think that right for you at the time of doing it so
well do keep up the good work.👍
hi hayley im keen to get into lorry driving can you tell me would they pay for me to start from the bottom up even tho ive provisional class2 and 3
You'd have to find a company willing to do that, I'm sure there are companies out there that would do that 😊
Hwo much time required to tought truk driving and expences plzz?
With you having that Mindset from driving a HGV, do you find yourself wanting to switch on your Car’s Hazard Lights before Reversing? At least driving a Lorry can teach you more about driving so you are more mindful of others on the road!
I do this anyway before I passed my HGV licence. Always good to take learnings from HGV back into your car :) much safer driving
Yes I do, I also sometimes wish there was a noise when reversing to stop people walking behind you. Particularly in car parks :)
Keep up the good job
Hi I like your videos. Can you tell me please how much lorry driver can earn per week or month?
My company won't allow me to discuss this on UA-cam but if you look around job sites. you can get an idea of the wages for class 1 and class 2 work :)
@@TruckDriverHayley Thanks
very interesting video. iam actually going for my HGV very very soon any tips ?
Keep clam and take your time, don’t ever rush in a truck 👍🏼
DAZZER THE TRUCKER thanks
Dazzer has given you the best advice there. Also try not to get upset if you make a mistake, we all started somewhere. Good luck for your training :)
Truck Driver Hayley yes Hayley is also right there, I’m the worst for that when I make a mistake I always beat myself up about it and worry but I do soon get over it, it depends on the individual some drivers don’t give a s**t and just carry on.... wait till you take a mudguard off you feel a right prat but everyone does it haha, just laugh it off it’s only a couple of clips to repair it!!👍🏼
you think 56 is slow try being limited to 53 and doing Deeside to Birmingham area most days.
I feel your pain! I do Birmingham area to Deeside twice a week. Which way do you go? :)
@@TruckDriverHayley I tend to go down the m6 as leave deeside about 3am and then comming back go the m6 but if there is a problem on it back on a483. As I get about 11 to 12 mpg using the m6.
You can take man out of the Lorry but you cannot take Lorry out of the man😛
And yes Big R Big S
Hope you are well! Nice to hear from you again :)
Jump ship and get a job driving a bin truck with the council haulage firms are nearly all the same the way they treat drivers im sure it would be no stress fixed hours good money good pension and good hols early start early finish
if you want to see the counrty get a PSV and drive a coach for a tour company
Check out truckmateuk on Facebook. Also don't be intimidated by class 1 they aren't as hard to drive as you might think. I find class 1 easier to drive than class 2
Good to see you back with a new vlog Hayley keep up the good work and I hope you don't mind me asking Hayley but I've made an observation no wedding ring on your left hand?
It was an engagement ring. I decided it was best that we went our separate ways. I don't want to say anything else about it - I hope you understand. All the best Wayne :)
@@TruckDriverHayley I fully understand and respect your wishes Hayley I wish you every happiness for the future take care and stay safe Hayley
