  • The Boise Song by Jewel - June 21, 2010 - Idaho Botanical Garden
    There´s an A in Atlanta, a G in Chicago,
There´s an E in Los Angeles and A in Miami
    There´s a S in Boston, a D in Philadelphia
A Y in Kansas City, but there´s no Z in Boise
There are Basques in Boise, lots of trees in Boise
There´s Pengilly's in Boise and Tom Graineys in Boise
Lots to do in Boise, lots to see in Boise
But there´s no Z in Boise
There are two Ls in Dallas and to Os in Montgomery
There´s even an R in Bellefourche
But there´s no Z in Boise
There´s river rafting in Boise, there's Hyde Park in Boise
And a botanical garden in Boise and an old prison in Boise
Lots to do in Boise, lot to see in Boise
But there´s no Z in Boise
So if you're from out of town
Please get this one thing down
It´s really not hard to pronounce
Let´s make some noise for Boise
There's a zoo in Boise, Bronco stadium in Boise
There's potatoes in Boise, buckaroos in Boise
Lots to do in Boise, lot to see in Boise
But there´s no Z in Boise
Cause there is no Z in Boise

@@dmcq7271 But that's how Idaho natives say it. I'm sure Coeur d'Alene and Kootenai aren't pronounced "properly" but natives pronounce it a certain way that others don't

Boise was spelled "Boisée" on the first maps. Internet audio dictionaries indicate that this would be pronounced Bwah-see in France, but Canadian French sites pronounce is Boy-see. Since French-Canadians found Boise, we are probably NOT pronouncing it incorrectly.

Love the song. I was substitute teaching in a kindergarten class at Owyhee Elementary here in Boise about 5 years ago, and the kids were all pronouncing it Boy-zee. I tried to correct them, but they said that's how their teacher told them to say it. Shame!

Teach them the history of the word then let them pronounce it was they feel is correct. Kids are smarter than their parents these days. Schools today are weak. Apparently so are the teachers.

For an Idaho native such as myself, watching a t.v. anchor regularly who makes a living here not knowing how to pronounce my city's name, the song spoke volumnes. It's not about how good the song is technically, it's about someone taking the time to show some respect for us "oldies" who know how to read.

Diane Sower I don't know if age matters much. I'm 15 and always pronounced it with an 's' whereas my parents on the other hand (and a quarter of the people in North Idaho) pronounce it with a 'z'. It bugs the living crap out of me but I think the problem is that most of the people up here are Californians...

Well I don't speak French so I'd have to take your word on the rules of pronunciation (which seem right). All I know is that I've lived in Boise for the past almost 20 years and I've always pronounced it with an 's' sound and hearing someone pronounce it with a 'z' sound is one of my biggest pet peeves. Maybe it's cus everyone I know says it with an 's' sound and that's what I'm used to..? I know a lot of people from Boise who feel the same way I do and some don't care.

Listen to her other "city" songs and you will see what I'm talking about. Take "jewels Missoula song" for instance, way better quality of song writing. Don't get me wrong I love Boise I've spent many years there and live two hours away now (in the asshole of Idaho-twin falls) but the song is just not good.

Are you not aware of what a buckaroo is? It's the anglicized word for Vaquero - adopted by cowboys of the Great Basin (of which Boise is the top border). They use unique methods for working cattle and horses, making some of the absolute best horses in the world, and a heritage that pre-dates the Texas style cowboy. There are various websites you can learn about the culture, then you may understand "wtf" buckaroos.

Kansai Rider. If it was intended to be a serious song, I would totally agree. I think it's likely though that they put it together in like 5 minutes, after someone corrected their pronunciation.
It's just super fun, in my humble opinion.
