For one, this is breaking karaoke protocal. You never intrude into someone else's performance unless invited. I do the karaoke circuit two or three nights a week, and this would be very much frowned on. You may even get a scolding from the KJ.
Anyone who has seen and heard Jewel sing live can testify that camera and audio recordings cannot capture the magic of her live voice especially that note on Foolish Games...brings tears to your eyes.
I heard jaws hitting the floor when she sang THAT note. Anyone sitting on the fence as to her true identity after that needs their hearing attended to. There is only one Jewel. Her genre of music isn't close to my heart but I had all of her early albums and played them endlessly.
This is one of my favorite YT videos of all time and I hadn't watched it in years. I don't know why but I always get tears in my eyes. Jewel and her music is just so wonderful.
Out of the tens of thousands of videos I’ve watched in the last decade this is one of my favorites. Edit: to elaborate.. when she performs as Karen it’s one of the purest things I’ve ever seen. She can be her true self and the crowd can respond to the quality of her performance without the baggage of being entertained by a famous professional. Her star power was too overwhelming for them to enjoy the show as Jewel. And they nailed it with the Karen cheering section which allowed them to set this up flawlessly. It was perfect.
@@randomyoutubeperson6954 But it's not your fault. Carry your head high and keep on movin' on. It also DOES give you a platform of your own from which to voice your own views on...whatever. People are almost forced to listen to you, just because they so easily ridicule "her." Work it. You got it.
Well, it should have been a dead giveaway is retrospect. The way she preforms her songs is that of elite seasoned performer. She completely shuts down the room and demands everyone's attention with her voice alone.
@Q Anon because she's in prosthetics in a dive karaoke bar and her name is Karen? Your analogy is just out there. But w/ a name of Q Anon, I shouldn't really expect much. Good luck with all that.
I actually disagree. I think it's the opposite. You know it's not star power, but actual talent when you can go in as a homely unknown and still rock the bar.

I've always gotten the impression that Jewel is a very down to earth and humble person. This video confirms that 100%! Just the girl next door. What a show that crowd got!
She grew up on that homestead featured in Alaska: The final frontier. Atz daughter. Crazy cuz she was on one episode and I did not put 2 and 2 together.
Yeah as an older white man I was embarrassed by the guy commenting that she was homely first and then sexy after she sang well...neither is anywhere near appropriate for him to say outloud never mind on camera...I imagine he was sufficiently humiliated later though...you'd hope anyway...most guys would be thrilled to be there to witness it and know better than to objectify her like that...on behalf of all men...please accept our sincere apology.
This is a great, funny, video. But it's also a great example of how natural talent always shines through. Even dressed up as a frumpy frozen foods salesperson, she still shines.
"For some odd reason" ??? No.. i'ts just that you don't know the reason I'm 49, I've been a musician since i was 14 I've been singing for the last probably 4 or 5 years when you sing and play you understand a few things about music and here are the basics - Music Conveys a message and more importantly A MEANING - This meaning can be different to us all - The communication medium that it uses is EMOTION You get confused because you think it's the words, it's not the words, it plays on your emotions Now jewel's songs deal with what ???? Love, Passion , Despair Life experiences that we can all relate to (TAKE NOTE.... WE CAN RELATE) Then of course you can song structure and lyrics, this is intended by design but then you have Notes POINT IN FACT "For some odd reason I tear up when she hits those notes" Notice you don't need to tell us which notes See, if you were here with me right now i could make you tear up , i could give you a vocal example of a lower register voice singing a certain line and nothing would happen then i could sing the same thing again (slightly tweaked) and in a higher register and you would feel heart tremors and if i continued you'd tear up the trick is. I'm drawing emotion out of you Part ofit has to do with the song and nothing more and art another part has to do with Positive emotional association for the purpose of selling records SEE HOW THAT WORKS ? You cry at the high notes because there are certain notes that sound more pleasing than other notes, it's just that simple and then of course, the song builds you UP TO THAT NOTE emotionally thats' why you cry and since jewel drew the emotion out of you and it was a beautiful emotion YOU THEN RESPOND LIKE THIS...... I love her ❤ See how that works Now you understand why you cry when you don't understand why your'e crying it's because OUR SUBCONCIOUS UNDERSTANDS but our consious mind is like..... why the fuck am i crying all of a sudden well.. that's why Music is an emotion that carries a message, it's that simple and you have no control over it
@@woodey028 You're welcome but yeah, if you ever get a chance to take music lessons and you do it ... say.. for approx 6 months You literally can get to a point where you hit a note for the first time and you make yourself cry and.. it sucks, because hightened emotion kills the tone and delivery of the note so singing is both about ability and ... You have to remember (at the same time) to sing the note beautifully, To feel the music BUT... NOT TO GET CARRIED AWAY EMOTIONALLY , that's probably the hardest part so when you're doing Foolish Games and you get to Theeese Fooolish games Are.... Tearing me apart it's hard not to cry while singing so there's that as well it's like, you do it for the first time and (as you said) you cry but you don't know why, at the same time Your sad, but You're happy and proud of yourself for hitting the note but... again, Your'e sad LOL so.. you don't know how to feel and voila, we end up back to the same point you cry and you don't know why LOL.. Weird Huh After a while you understand it and you learn how to get into the song while PARTIALLy ignoring the emotion then it's a question of.. How do you sing without emotion That's another can of worms
You wanna hear a tune that REALLY projects her emotional tie in to her vocals? Look up “daddy” live from 2020, She really lets it all hang out on that one

Once a young woman worked as an office assistant in our NYC office while she was waiting to make it big on Broadway. One Christmas we had a karaoke party and she just blew everyone's socks off because she was so incredible. She made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. We made her sing every song...no one else was allowed to get on stage after she sang! She got a job as a backup singer for a show soon after that and left the company. Unfortunately, I don't think she ever did "make it big," but it was just astonishing to hear her then.

For one, this is breaking karaoke protocal. You never intrude into someone else's performance unless invited. I do the karaoke circuit two or three nights a week, and this would be very much frowned on. You may even get a scolding from the KJ.
The world needs more of this, its bloody great clean fun and everyone enjoying each others company. All the very best from Australia.
Absolutely. I was there that night (interviewed at about 3:04) and couldn't believe how great she sounded
@@Lonstermash Oh wow.. that is you! Can’t even imagine what it was like to experience that live ❤
I could watch this 1000 times! It's 2019 and I'm still here!
my first time watching. Aug 10, 2019.
turblown my first time, I’ll be back sometime for sure
Met her a number of times waaaaay back. She's such an awesome person!!! I was soooooooooooo stoked the first time I heard her on the radio!😁😁
I think that's right. Been trying to figure out why this makes me cry every time I watch it. From "okay today" to "butts" I feel it swell every time.
Karen derives from the name meaning *pure. I was born Karen. Such a shame it's a hated and ridiculed name these days.
@@randomyoutubeperson6954 But it's not your fault. Carry your head high and keep on movin' on.
It also DOES give you a platform of your own from which to voice your own views on...whatever. People are almost forced to listen to you, just because they so easily ridicule "her." Work it. You got it.
You should check out also when adele undercovers with her fans
Well, it should have been a dead giveaway is retrospect. The way she preforms her songs is that of elite seasoned performer. She completely shuts down the room and demands everyone's attention with her voice alone.
I love when I see professionals do these things. It really lets the fans know that they are real people and good hearted people.
Not to mention.... really talented; it's not all just autotune and lip synch.
This needs to be turned into a series.
None of that Lip Sync Battle bullshit.
Sarah Benton lip sync battles was good at first, now it's annoying as hell. They try too hard
genius, you should work in TV
Its already a series. See The Office.
whenever I want to feel good on a late weekend night, I come back to this video. Absolute classic.
You know when you're a star because you can go in to a bar as an "unknown" and rock the crowd. That's star power.
the rest of you hang your heads in shame!
@Q Anon 2:10 ya derp
@Q Anon wat. dude. are ya dense? that's while she was "Karen." Why would anyone call Karen, Jewel? That's the entire point of this entire vid.
Jewel is truly a jewel in every respect : love her music and character.
The 90s were f****** beautiful.
And the 2000's came and ruined music, the dating scene, and society all together. Women we're a lot cooler to talk to as well. Not anymore, everyone scandalous now..
They really were Joe. It was the end of a lifestyle. The last of reality and real love
Thomas I agree
Dustin Kaglic your right
Fuck yes they were.
Absolutely LOVE the old man and just how happy he is with everything.
Of course they knew the words… they were all grads of the late 90s… we all know the words! Immediately, I’m back to that time. So nostalgic. I would have loved to be there! 💕💕Love you, Jewel!
Jeez, it's a karaoke joint. The words are all up on the screen.
@@jimwerther , cranky much? Technically, the words are up for the performer, but this is not worth arguing. I hope the following days were better for you.
@@doribellan
Lady, I'm not the old cranky one here. Go back to the cats.
I can’t believe how many times I have come back to watch this video. It looked like such a genuine absolute blast of a time!!!
Every year I come back and watch this, still think its one of the best videos on YT
If you want to see one of the all-time funniest clips on YT, search YT for "Turkey Call Blooper". This morning show gal makes an honest mistake that turns into one of the funniest moments in the history of television.
This is one of those videos that I keep coming back to because it always makes me feel so good.
Definitely need to do more videos like this with different singers in different karaoke places.
+Dean Winchester Shania Twain did one.
+treestump flyer True... But she wasn't in disguise...
+Dean Winchester bad one from vanessa amorosi, in my opinion
big city true she wasn't
+treestump flyer
They did one with Bob Dylan. He lost. Well, he lost and he was booed off the stage.
There needs to be more "undercover" videos like this.
yes
Deavon Reye I totally fully agree
I really just wanted someone to be like, "🤔🐩✋ this lady has nothing on my precious Jewel 😤😍🤗."
r/smurfingirl
Agree! Ive been on the hunt on youtube for similair scenarios, only ones i found were Miley and Christina with jimmy fellon in the nyc subway. NYC busks or something like that. Both of them don't need autotune.
Very cool. Her voice sounds like she's in the studio. Not many are the real deal. Also, that place looks like a great crowd and bar.
100%
If anything? The studio actually holds her back,
The song “you were meant for me”
On the cd , not the released single,
Sounds way more emotionally legit
I've been to a lot of concerts in my long life, but seeing Jewel in Toronto was one of the best. A natural performance artist through and through.
Only a terrific woman from humble beginnings would easily agree to do this and share her amazing talent for free with others
God, she’s adorable. And so incredibly talented. I wish we would hear more from her these days!
you can, just not on the radio. She still makes music and it's still really good. You just have to look for it, CD, Itunes, etc....
@@dalespencer11 Good to know!! Thank you!
She was just on Dax Shepard’s podcast. Great interview.
Love how people tell her she's ugly but it's okay because she can sing.
I actually thought she was gorgeous with the fake nose and glasses.
I would easily go out with Karen,
um Jewel also.
People are stupid, she is cute as Karen and Jewel.
@@n9nf8cesyes she was so so cute as Karen, I had a little crush 😭
Yeah as an older white man I was embarrassed by the guy commenting that she was homely first and then sexy after she sang well...neither is anywhere near appropriate for him to say outloud never mind on camera...I imagine he was sufficiently humiliated later though...you'd hope anyway...most guys would be thrilled to be there to witness it and know better than to objectify her like that...on behalf of all men...please accept our sincere apology.
Somewhere there's a couple guys that talk about the time they were so drunk they thought they saw Jewel at the bar.
GeneralChangOfDanang lol
😂😂😂
GeneralChangOfDanang lol maybe 1 or 2 at most might actually do that I'm sure some of them were feeling no pain
GeneralChangOfDanang
Hey leave me out of this
No worries Mate. Hey Buddercup. Keep on dancing
This is a great, funny, video. But it's also a great example of how natural talent always shines through. Even dressed up as a frumpy frozen foods salesperson, she still shines.
10 years on and people chanting "Karen! Karen!" has taken on a whole new meaning.
XD
Lol. So true.
Dude I was just thinking the same thing lol
Lol
I've been shouting "Smollett Smollett" at the media's
For some odd reason I tear up when she hits those notes. I love her ❤️
"For some odd reason" ???
No.. i'ts just that you don't know the reason
I'm 49, I've been a musician since i was 14
I've been singing for the last probably 4 or 5 years
when you sing and play you understand a few things about music and here are the basics
- Music Conveys a message and more importantly A MEANING
- This meaning can be different to us all
- The communication medium that it uses is EMOTION
You get confused because you think it's the words, it's not the words, it plays on your emotions
Now jewel's songs deal with what ????
Love, Passion , Despair
Life experiences that we can all relate to (TAKE NOTE.... WE CAN RELATE)
Then of course you can song structure and lyrics, this is intended by design
but then you have Notes
POINT IN FACT
"For some odd reason I tear up when she hits those notes"
Notice you don't need to tell us which notes
See, if you were here with me right now i could make you tear up , i could give you a vocal example of a lower register voice singing a certain line and nothing would happen
then i could sing the same thing again (slightly tweaked) and in a higher register
and you would feel heart tremors and if i continued you'd tear up
the trick is. I'm drawing emotion out of you
Part ofit has to do with the song and nothing more and art
another part has to do with Positive emotional association for the purpose of selling records
SEE HOW THAT WORKS ?
You cry at the high notes because there are certain notes that sound more pleasing
than other notes, it's just that simple
and then of course, the song builds you UP TO THAT NOTE emotionally
thats' why you cry
and since jewel drew the emotion out of you
and it was a beautiful emotion
YOU THEN RESPOND LIKE THIS...... I love her ❤
See how that works
Now you understand why you cry when you don't understand why your'e crying
it's because OUR SUBCONCIOUS UNDERSTANDS
but our consious mind is like..... why the fuck am i crying all of a sudden
well.. that's why
Music is an emotion that carries a message, it's that simple
and you have no control over it
@@martinkuliza very articulated reply. Thank you kindly.
@@woodey028
You're welcome
but yeah, if you ever get a chance to take music lessons and you do it ... say.. for approx 6 months You literally can get to a point where you hit a note for the first time and you make yourself cry
and.. it sucks, because hightened emotion kills the tone and delivery of the note
so singing is both about ability and ... You have to remember (at the same time)
to sing the note beautifully, To feel the music
BUT... NOT TO GET CARRIED AWAY EMOTIONALLY , that's probably the hardest part
so when you're doing Foolish Games
and you get to
Theeese Fooolish games
Are.... Tearing me apart
it's hard not to cry while singing
so there's that as well
it's like, you do it for the first time
and (as you said) you cry but you don't know why, at the same time Your sad, but You're happy and proud of yourself for hitting the note but... again, Your'e sad LOL
so.. you don't know how to feel
and voila, we end up back to the same point
you cry and you don't know why
LOL.. Weird Huh
After a while you understand it and you learn how to get into the song while PARTIALLy ignoring the emotion
then it's a question of.. How do you sing without emotion
That's another can of worms
The girls reaction at 4:03 perfectly illustrates the pure, raw power of Jewels vocals.
You wanna hear a tune that REALLY projects her emotional tie in to her vocals?
Look up “daddy” live from 2020,
She really lets it all hang out on that one
Yep
I wondered if maybe she had detected the ruse.
eargasm face ...
I come back and watch this video just for that face, it represents what all of us are feeling listening to it
I watch this video alot and I still can't get enough of this video. The people are out on probably a weekend night to have a good time and thus not a rowdy time, and Jewel displays the is down to earth at this bar. I absolutely love this video! A very uplifting video for me!
It was actually a MONDAY night, believe it or not? I was there (interviewed at 3:04). There are about twice as many people there on a weekend night! What an amazing moment
I first watched this many years ago, it never gets old!
Jim Knapp I agree
it never gets old I agree again because I'm watching again
It never gets old! Awesome video
I saw this video years ago and it just came upon me again. Still great!
This brings tears, don't know why. And it's over ten years later.
I love Jewel!Been listening 2 her
from the moment she 1st hit the
scene & she's still magnificent!!
Jewel is one of the very few people in the singing industry that can sound that good in person
That's because she cut her teeth in coffee shops and little dive bars.
Yes, I've heard her live sitting 2 rows away. She's that good.
Kevin Roberts was.
She’s a great talent. Aaron Lewis is really solid solo too. Great video, love this.
Dylan Hale dude she still has a fantastic set of pipes. Hell, she's on tour this year.
My first time to see this. I love Jewel and the impact her voice has on people! 💖 🎶
When someone sings your songs word for word, you know it's wonderful. Jewel is beyond amazing!!!
The best part is 4:03 - 4:07 when Jewel hits the high note a girl in the crowd has this dazed look on her face, mouth hanging open. This is what it means when someone says " It blew My Mind ".
It made my cry.
Are you "Serious" right now????
In "Foolish Games"
She was shitting herself cause she was up next.
These crowed at the bar was amazing! So much love and appreciation for music, and so much support! You guys were not "sweet", you are awsome!
It was an amazing night! I rarely go there on a Monday, but thank God I did that night. Interviewed at 3:04

I consider this one of the best videos on youtube...what a great thing to do...Jewel you've rekindled a new love for your old music with me...I really fucking love this video
When I saw Jewel in concert in the 90s.. I was (and I think the whole crowd was) blown away by the power of her voice live in concert. If you have a chance see her live, you will be amazed.
I am a 100 percent with Dean Winchester. I must say though, I love watching this video over and over again. Jewel is such a beautiful and gentle soul.
I love Jewels story and how she started. I agree they loved her without knowing who she was, that's what separates the real ones from the wannabes.
I have to come here after her Masked Singer win. How amazing she is. Sensational.
I'm so glad I came across this video I've been having a really bad day but having a really bad week and this made me feel a lot better
thanks Jewel
I wish singers would do this more often its always so amazing and a special treat for the people they sing for.
Most "singers" cant actually sing though
Jewel was my favorite for the first 5 years she came out. We are about the same age. Life took me away from music and I haven’t heard her for a while and this video has tears streaming down my face. I love the sincerity and passion In her words and voice. There’s so much more I can’t describe. Thank you for this. I think I’ll meet her one day, maybe when we’re 80.
The positivity and coolness of the bar patrons is epic. Legends
She won The Masked Singer in the Spring 2022 edition. She even "disguised" her voice by singing in different styles and tones...but STILL won!
Is that why we're watching this video in 2022?
She fooled me for a while with the fake Southern accent when speaking, but after a couple performances that voice was unmistakable.
Queen of hearts
....Um, no, idiot. We are watching this video in 2022 because 2022 is one of the infinite number of years that exists after 1997 or whenever Jewel became famous.
Awesome... impossible to watch without a huge smile.
Seriously how did so many people vote this video down? Really?
Drunk downvoting?

Probably because it's a funny or die...and it's not particularly funny.
I have watched this over a hundred times ❤️
Both Karen and Jewel are excellent singers. Awesome.
you have to admit Karen was a little better...

Is it just me or is Jewel very beautiful?....She looks like she is made of sunlight.

Been a fan of her's since goodness knows, this is one of my favourite video's going, keep coming back just because I can,2023 and still l smile, Cheers from New Zealand,
Once a young woman worked as an office assistant in our NYC office while she was waiting to make it big on Broadway.
It’s true even back-ups have been known to make it big. Notable examples are Mariah Carey, Judith Hill, Lizzo and Heather Morris.
She did find a break in the country music scene. She’s one of the best selling artists - Shania Twain
Some people truly have the gift to move us with their voices. Sadly its not the best that make it to the top.
She doesn't have to make it "big". If she can ear a living doing what she loves, I can assure you...she will feel rich.
@@ReactionShot Great comment! in today's world specially in music you can develop a fan base right here on youtube without the "industry" meddling with your talent or steering you into any type of divisive social perspectives just to be published.
