    When you're young perfection is definitely an ego booster. Sitting on your boat knowing that it's better than everyone else's feels pretty good. When you get older and all your joints hurt and your back muscles lock up after 20 minutes of work you realize another definition of the term "ego death". Through my 20's and 30's I worked crazy hours, made lots of money and constantly impressed people with my work and tenacity. Now I strive to just get my boat to look decent and stay functional for us because my body is now what needs maintenance. At 46 I'm burned out. My names Chris, and I worked myself too hard as my ego ran unchecked and my body paid the price. I miss feeling like superman. Be careful and think about the future. Our hands can only swing a hammer so many times. Save some swings for later in life.

    Just finished complete paint restoration on a 50 footer! Bottom, topsides & deck! 2 months of 8 hours a day on the yard! Every day! So I can appreciate all Ur hard labor! Avocet looks beautiful! I still say all the hard labor is worth the final outcome! Is Avocet a Cheoy Lee! That bowpiece & the fillegre sure look familiar! Thanx 4 the great vids! 👍

    Your shows are great, skillful picture taking, great documenting and editing.
    Comparing your productions with “professional” series from History and Discovery channel, I have to conclude you outperform those guys ten fold.
    You successfully document true onboard living as authentic as can be and in a way more captivating fashion, giving those guys a run for their money.
    Thank you for work, I do take some videos myself, therefore I have a somewhat an idea what it requires to produce a video of the quality you do.

      Sailing Avocet after watching this episode, I watched quite a few more. The amount of work you put into your boat is astonishing adding that to your video work, makes it more impressive yet. UA-cam proofs to be a great tool to create awareness and recognition of your talents and hopefully paving the way to a great career.
      Btw I had a Moluccan cockatoo for many years with the name of Cleo and now since four years I gave refuge to a furry hobo who stole some moulded Swiss cheese out of my garbage bag. On base of his first picture captured by my game camera he got babtized “Stretch”. He has transformed into a very beautiful looking most likely Sibirien Forrest cat. Beautiful!! Very Classic rudder rivets! One spray coat? Its LP?
    I did mine in Marina Seca MX. I Sprayed, but lots of sanding and do-overs due to embedded bugs if was calm, and sand when it wasn't. SO many coats, but mostly sanded right back off again: yep, frustrating. If its any comfort, once you're Cruising, aesthetics and other priorities will totally change. Cheers !

    Love to watch you work on that beautiful boat! Please check, at time 8:54, on "Finally Painting Our Sailboat", I thought I saw a horizontal crack in the metal flange, which protects the front bottom edge of the rudder skeg? It runs from a "bolt hole" on the starboard side, around the front, to the other side which is unable to be seen in the video. Thanks

    • @sailingavocet
      @sailingavocet  3 роки тому

      Hey thanks for watching! Can’t believe this was almost 2 years ago. I see what you’re looking at but here’s some background: it is stainless steel so there is a possibility there is a crack in the metal however we had it in our hands for 2 weeks, carefully inspected it and nothing seemed to be in dire need of addressing or replacing. We have replaced sooo much stainless aboard avocet (such as all her chainplates) that this quite frankly overbuilt rudder boot is not a concern. If there was a major crack we would have fixed it :) thanks for being curious!

      Hi Morgan! Thank you and your wife so much for watching, we appreciate the support and look forward to releasing the last piece of this series soon... Chris and I are actually preparing to sail his mother in law's Mason 43' sailboat from SF Bay to here in Ventura as a new "home port" since its hailing port in Berkeley has become questionable and we fear his moms safety (especially when we take off cruising!) When we get back from that adventure we will be sailing Avocet for the FIRST TIME since the boatyard! We are absolutely giddy. Do you have instagram? if you do follow us @svavocet so you can stay up to date with our latest whereabouts and projects :) Cheers!

    • @TheMorganMonroeShow
      @TheMorganMonroeShow 4 роки тому

      Yes, we are at @MorganHollywoodMonroe. So when you say Berkeley has become questionable are you talking about the socialist takeover? I am from Los Angeles and it became so bad that I moved to Florida years ago. Now it is just over the top weird. I cannot believe Americans would sacrifice their freedom for socialism. I just don’t understand it. And then to defend the people who are protecting us? Very strange.

    • @sailingavocet
      @sailingavocet  4 роки тому +1

      Berkeley is a college town which is cool but then around the marina the homeless camp has basically become a city and there’s feces everywhere. At the marina itself we have been sitting on the boat and heard gunshots in the parking lot just down the way. It’s just bad news and time to move the boat somewhere as beautiful as it is. Despite the marina itself, Chris and I are looking forward to sailing Avocet into SF bay because it is such a blast! The Bay Area makes great strong sailors. Cheers!

    Looks great. On the the primer burn through issue you encountered; I wonder if using an inexpensive Preval sprayer from an auto parts store would get you the smooth finish in just those areas, without excessive build up requiring constant sanding. I am looking at painting ours in the future, especially after seeing how great your hull looks.

    • @sailingavocet
      @sailingavocet  4 роки тому

      It probably would but unfortunately in the state of California you can’t spray your own paint... which is why Johnny stepped in. It would have been out of budget to pay for them to spray primer as well, so next time we will have to budget for it!
