10100003 I’ve heard similar things from a few people. I’ve heard that it focuses more on tournaments though. Is there still a lot of stuff that can be applied to cash games i.e. Deeper stacks?

I bought the book. There one thing that is annoying me however: the hand ranges shown in the book don´t show the exact frequences of the actions. For example, when you should call sometimes and raise sometimes it doesn´t show the exact percentage of time. This is disappointing and annoying because that is essencial to get an understanding of the ranges..

For how famous and solid this book is, there are an unfortunate number of typos. They really slow down the reading/ learning process, which is a shame given how thorough the content is.

How would a live low-stakes NLHE player benefit from this book? Should it be read cover to cover, or be used more as reference material for specific situations? For the scenarios evaluated, does it assume everyone is playing optimally, or does it take into account LAG, TAG, Fish and other player types commonly encountered at live tables?

Hi. It can be good for both reference and specific situations. If you read the book through you will simply understand poker better. If you play low-stakes live NLHE your opponents will be playing far from optimally but there is material in the book that explains how to exploit players who do not play optimally by varying your own play. You should also consider Exploitative Play in Live Poker by Alex Fitzgerald (also on our site) which is excellent on this topic.

@@byronjacobs7992 Thanks for the reply. Looking through the sample pages, it feels like the material is targeted towards those who are already steeped in solvers and probably have done a lot of this work themselves. For those of us not yet at that level, most of it will likely leave us nonplussed. How do we practically apply mixed strategies at the table? How do we summarize most of these reams of data into usable chunks of information? What to do with 10%-20% variations in mixed strategies between strong, medium, weak and trash hands? etc. etc. My suspicion is that this book will require a companion book at some point for us beginner to intermediate players.

@@GeneGerwin Hi Gene, You are right up to a point that GTO is an area that is of great interest to advanced players playing at the higher stakes. However, one of the major benefits of understanding a GTO style is that it leads you to play correct ranges and gives you a decent understanding of what kind of bet sizes should be used with approximately what frequencies on certain board structures. If you have ambitions to move up in stakes you have a much greater chance of being able to do so if you have constructed a fundamentally sound game - which a moderate understanding of GTO will enable you to do. We may well do a further book at some point which is a more basic guide to GTO but Modern Poker Theory does contain substantial sections that provide a theoretical background to GTO, using toy games etc.

It teaches you how how to think about poker and the tools to analyse your game. Stakes is irrelevant imho. Once you understand these concepts you will be able to truly understand how badly people are playing and have the tools to exploit them. If you put the work in away from the table (which will be considerable amount) with this book you will be able to comfortably play in any stakes. It's that simple.
I've been into GTO poker since GTORB etc but do not have a math background and struggled with Tiptons book. This is everything you'll ever need. You can figure it out for yourself without having to to pay thousands on training sites, coaching etc. The value is insane!
