- England manager Gareth Southgate has resigned following a second consecutive European Championship final defeat.
England lost 2-1 to Spain in Berlin on Sunday, after previously being beaten by Italy on penalties three years ago.
The 53-year-old, who managed England for 102 games over eight years, announced his resignation, stating it was "the honour of my life" to lead the team.

England can never just say "Well done" and "Thanks"; instead, it is a grumble, a cringey, never-ending winge-athon. The media and the fans can veer toxic. England may want a fresh change in management, but at least be classy to Southgate on his way out.
Well said! ⚽️
Exactly !
You are right
Why?
@@mectrid6832 Because it's a civilised thing to do. Just because it's football, no need to loose human respect and values.
He took England to 2 finals! god, when it comes to being toxic to their own manager, England are always the world champions!
This final was the easiest route we could have had. Let be honest if we were in the other route with France, Belgium, Portugal wtc, we would have been eliminated sooner. History books will look at Southgate kindly but there needs to be context.
We played terrible for the players we got
@@jolfc9602 True. I'd say. On the day of the finals, Spain had possession of 70% and that said everything. Very few chances of getting the shots on target. Reinforcements arrived late. It was trash.
@@jolfc9602 Parking the bus and playing terrible are 2 different things.
He scraped through to the final on luck, his tactics were wrong, his substitutions were all over the place and his attacking was zero.
England is the team with the biggest discrepancy in average salary and titles won.
Now England won’t get past the quarterfinals like before 🤦🏻♂️🏴
You are right. Gareth southgate was very successful manager i have ever seen. He doesn't deserve to fire
We should Salute this man!!
He took us from irrelevance to very serious contender in a relatively short time!
We can have pride in our national side.
And now he's stepping aside with dignity to let the next person have a go and do better.
Amazing man, I salute you 👏
Agreed
Despite England having ample talented players even as substitutes, he couldn't create the potential this team has.
what cobblers
Who were you watching 😅😅😅😅😅😅
Rubbish. We got where we did against weak teams with lucky draws. Anytime we played a big team - we lost every time and generally played poor football.
The easy draws we have had have masked and fooled people into thinking we did better than we did.
He's been huge for England. Did a great job. Thank you Gareth 🙏
Gareth you have been breath of fresh air for England good luck in the future.
Farewell Gareth, thanks for everything you have done for England over these past 8 years. Wish you all the best in your future endeavours ♥️
Wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Next time we'll play eleven commentators!
To be fair he has taken England further than they have previously. 2 Euro finals is pretty impressive, and almost a pipe dream before.
I have little doubt he has helped set the groundwork to help England be a viable force in the future.
Stop kidding yourself… we’ll be out 1st round next time.. We had nowt to beat en route to Finals & still couldn’t achieve anything..
He had his faults but did a damn good job overall, bringing England to two back to back Euro finals and the 2022 FIFA quarter finals and 2018 Semi-finals.
Before that England's performance was abysmal, he helped revitalise English football beyond the Premier League, so fair play to him
Oh c’mon, man. I accept he got to finals. But the way he did, _genuinely_ made a late Mourinho team look attacking and exciting. Southgate is clearly one of the most likeable men on the planet, but his brand of (anti)-football is some of the most dire I’ve ever seen. Imagine if England had won this thing: aside from Bellingham’s bicycle kick, there would be no highlight reel where we saw genuinely good football being played. For 30 mins. in the first half against the Dutch, England played how they should’ve been playing for the 13 other halves of the tournament. England got to a semi and 2 finals _despite_ Southgate, not because of him.
Easiest road to the finals, played bad in the majority of matches, most of the squad is world class then.
If they had a good manager they would have at least played well but every match was terrible. They had one good match against the Netherlands.
Embarrassing. Individual players kept saving him.
@@Emtrax. One good 30 minutes against the Netherlands. Even in _that_ game, the Netherlands bossed the second half because all Southgate knows is how to park a bus.
@@titteryenot4524 doesn't change the fact that England was a joke of a team before 2017 that couldn't even get out of the group stage, losing to literally everyone in FIFA 14 and losing to bloody Iceland in Euros 16 at the round of 16.
Southgate inherited a shambles of a team, and turned them around to be consistent high performers. Literally none of England's tournament performances in the 8 years before Southgate match any of their performances in the 8 years since he took over.
I don't like his favouritism for Kane as much as the next guy, but I'm also not daft enough to think talent just dropped into England's lap in the years since he took over. England has always had football talent, but seldom decent management for the national team, Southgate did a good job.
@@shamrock141 Give me England winning just one major tournament playing scintillating, attacking possession-based football than 10 lost finals where every game is a turgid mess of no patterns, no excitement, no _real_ football, quite frankly.
I don't care about football at all, but it seems to me like a guy who got his team all the way to the final is a great coach.
To be honest he was in 2 finals some semi finals and Quarter finals and he gets honestly overhated
@@Marocforever09 football fans are extremely toxic, that’s the main reason I take no interest jn the sport.
Well, because you don't care about football you don't have the context of this guy getting bailed out by the talent he has at disposal and his tactics have fallen short in two consecutive Euros
@@avgaming4093Talent? Average team players, incredibly overrated.
Exactly right. People just don’t appreciate what a big deal it is to reach a major final. The only team that beat us was Spain, and they are crazy good. Second place in two consecutive euros isn’t bad at all
Southgate analysis is simple. 1. He must be respected and praised for achieving more than any England manager since Alf Ramsey; 2. He's a class act and gentleman in the way he unified the team, managed the players and media; 3. He resigned with dignity at the exact right time as he's taken us as far as we can go; 4. The negative, defensive style of football he employed is simply not appropriate for the best attacking options we've had for generations; 5. We now need a manager that can create a system and environment that actually maximises our world class players' talents so we can see the best of Bellingham, Foden. Oh and who picks based on form and performance, not favouritism or brand.
I respect Gareth Southgate.. It is always easy to criticise people.. If you don’t stand with people on their bad time, you’ve no roght to be with them , when they are successful. Wish you all the best Mr Gareth❤.. I appreciate all your hardwork to bring the boys to the finals ❤❤❤
An honourable and talented gentleman to the end. Good luck to him for the future.
How England fans sees 2 consecutive finals as something random is beyond me.
This is a squad of stars mate …with an offensive mentality this team can win anything on the planet
All the best teams got knocked out
Just watch next tournament we won't even qualify and then what will England 'fans' say.
How could you not think we had an easy run to the final compared to Spain??
Absolutely!
He's one of the best managers that England could have 2 Finals at Euro one semi final at world cup
Jesus wept.
@@dog79-p5l He is not a winner.
Given the players they have, and the teams they had to beat to achieve that, it is really just the minimum requirement. If they hadn't reached that stage in those tournaments, they'd have fell seriously short of their potential. He did an okay job, nothing to shout about.

Gareth was on to something with his squad as evident by how close England has been to winning these tournaments but the ultimate magic of pulling it off and beating our opponents lies within the team. Whom ever we get next as manager needs to identify strong player's and ween out the weakest.

SORRY. The laughing faces were s'posed to go to another post
In regards to appointing a manager for England, the issue lies with the FA, which seems to prioritize appointing figureheads over selecting a manager with the best chance of leading England to victory. The FA also needs to be held accountable as they introduce new rules to the game, like adding significant amounts of minutes to games that could mean up to 3-6 more additional games per season for the average Premiership player. Players were already mentally and physically fatigued before this, but they have used business before respecting the spirit of the game, which reflected deeply in the way Gareth Southgate laid out the team. The FA needs to scale down the amount of playing time by 15% in order to reduce injuries and fatigue to our key players; otherwise, the potential England has will not be shown when playing for England. There is a reason why football will not come home any time soon.
Best england manager in my lifetime. Refreshed the team a lot.
His substitution worked in the final but then so did Spains. Compare him to Roy Hodgeson or Steve McLaren. It's not even close
Huh?
@@JamesCM86 We equalised, Palmer scored. Then Spain made changes and got back on top
England hadn’t even made a Euro final before. Now they’re back-to-back runner-up under his watch.
there will be many moments in the future when fans recall old good Southgate times
He was still actually one of England's best managers but just wasn't efficient enough in his tactics and decisions and considering the amount of talent in the squad, should have won atleast one trophy. Great effort nontheless! All the best to him for his future endeavours!!
He was aided by easy draws, and still barely made it.
He always had the luck of the draw and would always lose when they faced their first strong opponent.
Falling in the final twice in a row translates to England's historic failure to obtain titles
The England teams of the past 2 decades should have won too. But they didn't even make the finals with the midfield talent they had. England fans are so delusional.

Gareth Southgate should have quit three weeks ago. England did not deserve to win, they are weak and played the final by chance. Spain won every match, he was the most deserving of the victory. Why is Southgate upset, his team did not deserve a different result.

I was thinking on Monday about whether he would stay or go and then the thought hit me. Who would replace him? Not alot to choose from.
Southgate had a short fairly unsuccessful term as Middlesborough manager, and was the England U21's manager, I think they can find someone to match that.
*Thanks for keeping us updated! I feel sympathy and empathy for our country. low income people are suffering to survive, and I appreciate Amanda. You've helped my family with your advice. imagine investing $30,000 and receiving $95,460 after 28 days of trading*
I began investing in stocks and Def earlier this year, and it is the best choice l've ever made. My portfolio is rounding up to almost a million, and I have realized that when a stock makes it to the news. Chances are you're quite late to the party, the idea is to get in early on blue chips before it becomes public. There are lots of life changing opportunities in the market, and maximize it
What opportunities are there in the market, and how do I profit from it?
You can make a lot of money from the market regardless of whether it strengthens or crashes. The key is to be well positioned.
I would really like to know how this actually works.
All you need is a good capital, and the service of a professional broker, with those your investment will most certainly produce high yields.
I really think this group of players is gonna win something in the future, something that everybody knows has not been happening for ages now. When that day will come, this man will be a big part of it and it should be remembered as such. The work he has done changing this team from a joke to a competitive squad since he got the the job I think was unexpected.
End of an era, thank you Gareth.
Now its time for Karry Hane to step down as England captain and should retire, his inclusion would never give England the International trophy 🏆 they'll collect only runners-up medal 🏅 at the finals........

Good luck for the future, we will miss you from the potential replacements
Anything less than winning was a failure. Southgate did well, but ultimately won nothing and therefore had to resign
Thank you sir for everything ❤️❤️
England made it to the finals in spite of Southgate. His team selection and tactical selections were poor. Let’s not forget we entered the tournaments as favourites and then proceeded to play boring defensive football
The job is open now. Make sure you apply.
But you were never favorites lol. That's the media talking. The reality always was you would lose and the media over rates the team.
As a Brit i can say we were never the favourites. kane is the most overrated player in the England team, tbh he's shite. Compare to the England's women's team my god their fire to watch, fast, quick balls, make space, ruthless.
@@Jay_Richardson Have to agree with you unfortunately, the commentators during the match were delusional. From the way they were talking (until Spain won), they were constantly deluding that England would find a way to win 100%. They do realise Spain beat France, Germany and Italy whereas England were on the easier side of the draw?
@@phase0400 Oh i know same as Ian Wright constantly defending Kane, just thinking 'what are you talking about?' most of the matches even before he just stands around looking gormless, doesn't make space, doesn't try lose the defender, other CF were past him or even Midfielders and waiting for the ball to come to him. The men should watch the women.. my god they're on a another level. Actually showing they want to win. Hence why England's midfielders stopped passing the ball to Kane in most matches because they probably got frustrated with him literally not doing anything.
