Grinding Chevy Starter (Bendix?)

My trusty old Suburban wasn't starting so well anymore. In fact, it would barely start at all. There was a lot of grinding and lack of crankage. Join me as I explain how I figured out just what the cause was.

Ford makes such a better starter.

Changed three starters, fly wheel and its still grinding, put shims on and it still grinds...
Ideas??

I have that same issue with the bendix in my starter that keeps breaking nearly every 2 to 3 years on my 2002 s10 Blazer here in Australia, just dont know why, put in a new unit that fixes it, my blazer has the v6 4.3l with a 4l60e transmission transmission

Do you not think that the oil leaking into the kick starter will mess things up?

Nope, did have any and didn't need any.
