I'm lucky enough to live next to the Wollongong airport and I love being able to see and hear all the old historic planes they fly. Also Amazing Video!!
If you haven’t already I strongly recommend a trip to the Drome Cafe and Tocumwal airfield, exceptional food and drink and only a couple of hours from Melbourne!
The air museum at Shellharbour airport is really good too, I was actually surprised that they got their hands on some pretty rare planes including some of which the Queen flew on.
Quality of this video just went through the roof!! The part of the sunset going down was probably one of the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in a while. These videos just keep getting better and better!
Another cool fact about the 747 at Shellharbour is when it landed in Shellharbour, they didn’t use reverse thrust as there was construction going on at the start of the runway so if they did use reverse thrust they’d blow all of the dirt piles and stuff into spectators who were there. Definitely worth the drive from Sydney they have great tours and volunteers who work there who are all passionate about the aircraft.
Tocumwal is the only decent on airport cafe / restaurant option within 1 hrs flight from Melbourne. That said, the sad fact is that the majority of its patrons are tourists and not pilots. We have the GA pilot numbers in Australia to make on-airport cafes viable. However, sadly the GA pilot community in Australia does not fly often enough due to cost.
Camera night filming. What you did get with the Sun on the horizon between the layers I think is every GA non instrument rated pilots dream and of course those with one surely relish, stunning.
Captain Slow, Love the footage of EYZ flying between the clouds towards the sunset with the down light on the front landing gear...epic...very Blade Runner-ish! Ohhh are they new Harry Potter glasses?
Hi Stef, nice video. If you are interested there’s an event coming up at the Bacchus Marsh Airfield called wings wheels and coffee on Sunday 5th Feb 2023. There’s some planes on display, a car show and coffee too. 9am to 2pm. The event can be found on Facebook for more details.
Great video Stef. I haven't been flying much lately but will have to get back in the swing of it and head to Melton for a cuppa. That clip at 8:06 is amazing!! What a privilege it is to fly
I've got fond memories or Melton air field, my first ever flight in a GA aircraft was in the back seat of a C172 outa there when I was 5 or 6 years old
I believe that VH-OJA also holds the record for the shortest 747 flight when it was flown from Sydney to Shellharbour airport for it's retirement. Great video!
I still have fond memories of meeting you at Oz Flight Sim expo 2018. I hope we can cross paths again one day. I'm currently learning to fly at YCDR using the sling 2's, and I always see the Cirrus's next door. It's a dream to be able to fly the cirrus'. The fellow kid from Kent
I've flown into Melton once before but in the days before the Cafe. Have driven past and stopped and definitely do good food and coffee. Shame not more places that do a good feed near to the local airport.
You should fly to Caloundra Aerodrome. It has the Queensland Aviation Museum next to it is a 15 minute flight over to Moreton Island. You also get some amazing views around there!
Also absolutely amazing video Stef! I love all your videos. I love how you not just entertain us but also teach us about the aircraft and other cool things! 👍👍
Man I am so envious of people that can wake up on a nice day and have the thought "you know what, im gonna quickly fly to a coffee place 15 min away with a couple of other people that also share my passion" One day I plan on getting there, only need to get myself a PPL... and a plane. Already live close to an airfield, but missing the two important ones. Love your videos Stef :)
Gawd blimey your accents like mine innit though , except I’m a Brummie . Heard you on the Shellharbour CTAF and tracked you just to the East of me as you commenced your instrument approach on RW 16 . There’s a good cafe at the HARS museum for your info . Cheers mate and happy days .
I think people like Matt Guthmiller etc use Canons and Nikons with high dynamic range to get their cockpit view night flight videos. Still, the GoPro's picked some pretty nice sunset departure footage over the clouds. That was worth it.
Stef, you’re joining the rest of us older pilots who now need to wear glasses when flying! I have a clear set like yours, plus a tinted set for those sunny Melbourne days.
Awesome vid Stef, love these flying vlog-style videos! If you were at Shellharbour a couple of days later, I would've said hello - just did my first flight after a few years off training. HARS has an open day in the middle weekend of each month where they bring out a lot of their special aircraft for public display. There's WOI in November too, and you might even catch the Connie flying if you're lucky. Also, that sunset cloud-surfing shot was epic :) Happy Flying!!
Another great video! My home airport, Shellharbour, I look forward to dropping in at Moorabbin when I next fly to Melbourne. Gotta say though, it's a bit daunting with 5 runways when you are not used to using towered airfields!!
ahh that's good to see they saved that 747... Ive been on that flight from london to sydney :D we got a bunch of free stuff which i still have today :D
Hi Steph, Geat video great to see some older type aircraft, would like to see if you can get to Temora airport, visited a few years ago with work while I was in the area.a really great collection of aircraft. Cheers keep up the great work
The days of being able to fly for breakfast or grab a hamburger are just about gone in Australia. Decades ago, before the corrupt sale of city and rural airports, you could fly a light aircraft and land without charges, to that community airport. The places mentioned here are rare exceptions. In the USA and Canada you can still fly in your Cessna 150 for breakfast and they guy in the table next door might have flown in with a helicopter , gyroplane or cessna citation.
Love your stuff, as always! A few quick questions: who washes your plane and how often? What product do you use to clean the exhaust grime off the belly? EYZ is always so gloriously shiny!!!
Hey Stef, Mid February I will be taking my 15y/o daughter to her first trial introductory flight at Lethbridge YLED and will send through a coffee report. Sorry no nancy Oatmeal latte though....😏 Also YBRS Barwon Heads near Ocean Grove Vic has a seafood shop right next door to the airport office. Torquay Airport YTQY has / had mini golf
This is literally in my backyard my house is under 2km from the airfield I would have come and had a burger and coffee if I knew you were coming to melton airfield
Hi Stef, very entertaining as usual. After being subscribed for a number of years suddenly a question dawned on me. Is there a connection between Milkshake and YMMB? Like MOO, for instance?
The coffee was better, because it was served with kerosine smell. Maybe your local coffee can install a kerosine air freshener, altough I doubt that non pilots would enjoy that.
Hey mate, i just wanted to ask you a question. I know your often around the Bankstown area, I was wondering if you would pick Sydney Flight College or Basair? I heard some negativity around Basair. I would love to know your input. Thanks!!
Long story short, Sony A7s III, used or refurbed will be unbeatable night performance, maybe 1000x more sensitive than a gopro. With an inexpensive prime lens f1.8 it will be more sensitive than the human eye and deliver great video. You might also get addicted to its daytime quality. It's easily cinema quality. It's sensitive enough that you can see thousands of stars. Sony A7s (mark 1) can be as much as 8 years old but is also very light strong but has poor battery life afaik. Will do the trick in a pinch but go for the III unless there is big price difference. Edit: it seems the A7 IV is cheaper and even better so buying it new seems to be the way to go.
lower f number means more light swallowing. you can get better than f1.8 but they start to cost. There is an f1.2 lens that will be the most light sensitive. Sony FE 50mm f1.8 is about 200$, f1.2 is about 2000$. 50mm is not wide angle but maybe you don't need wide for night shots.
Some of those images at melton are sad. Have you flown into Lilydale or Coldstream? I sometimes take my kids there just to watch mostly student pilots do circuits. Would love to learn to fly some day myself.
Do it. Been flying at lilydale for two years. Recommend it. The warriors/archers are larger and more tolerant to turbulence and wind. Vixens are just a bunch of fun.
I actually quite like the old aviation pumps / aircraft still on display. It’s a very active airport, nice they keep some of the history on show as well.
I’d say the lack of on air facilities is just down to low population: not enough people of means to fly for fun to keep that sort of stuff going at many places…
What I’ve learnt from Stefan’s vlogs. Never his fault always Steven’s fault. Steven if you’re reading this, I feel sorry for you and take my hat off to you for your patience
In Australia we don’t have FBOs. Ironically now being in the US there are very few public use tie-down locations and the ability to just roll up and self fuel is almost impossible - without needing a FBO and paying the fees. ua-cam.com/video/glpLaL3YNMc/v-deo.html
I'm lucky enough to live next to the Wollongong airport and I love being able to see and hear all the old historic planes they fly. Also Amazing Video!!
That is lucky, it’s a great place. Thanks for watching Elijah.
If you haven’t already I strongly recommend a trip to the Drome Cafe and Tocumwal airfield, exceptional food and drink and only a couple of hours from Melbourne!
Holy Milkshake. That shot at 8:06 is an awesome poster shot, if I ever saw one.
The air museum at Shellharbour airport is really good too, I was actually surprised that they got their hands on some pretty rare planes including some of which the Queen flew on.
AMAZIING ...JUST LOVE YOUR VIDEOS DUDE
Thank you, I appreciate you saying that.
Seeing that 747 jumbo jet,I was on that from London to Sydney back in 91 !!
Quality of this video just went through the roof!! The part of the sunset going down was probably one of the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in a while. These videos just keep getting better and better!
@abaNpreach527 oh what is wrong with these bots???? They are everywhere
Another cool fact about the 747 at Shellharbour is when it landed in Shellharbour, they didn’t use reverse thrust as there was construction going on at the start of the runway so if they did use reverse thrust they’d blow all of the dirt piles and stuff into spectators who were there. Stef,Amazing video as always love the editing and overall the best aviation UA-cam on the platform
Keep up the great work!
That’s a lovely thing to say, thank you.
That Sunset was awesome
That vision at 8:10! Beautiful
Camera night filming.
What you did get with the Sun on the horizon between the layers I think is every GA non instrument rated pilots dream and of course those with one surely relish, stunning.
Wow.......some of the pictures as you went between the clouds were amazing 😮 love your content
Well done for not spilling that latte!
And great sunset views on departure too.
Captain Slow, Love the footage of EYZ flying between the clouds towards the sunset with the down light on the front landing gear...epic...very Blade Runner-ish! Ohhh are they new Harry Potter glasses?
Sunset shots were beautiful!
As always thanks Stef.
Thanks to you for watching Dave.

Great video Stef. I haven't been flying much lately but will have to get back in the swing of it and head to Melton for a cuppa.
That clip at 8:06 is amazing!! What a privilege it is to fly
I can sympathize with filming with low light... but for all the compromises, the shot at 8:07 between cloud layers with the sun definitely worked!!!
It did until 2019 when Flight BA9172 was flying from Cardiff to St Athan for the aircraft to be retired.
8:01 the Australian sunset 🌅
What a shot between the cloud layers.
Great video Stef! Melton is my local field (I'm based in the Melton Area) but the day you came out I was away at the beach! Love the content!
Nice - its always good when you find a great coffee spot even if it means a short plane ride to reach it. Love the video's Stef as always
Thanks Stef, great video again.
The night flying bits were so beautiful, though... I wish you'd put more of that flight in this video.
And you didn’t even spill a drop 😂. Loving what you do, cheers.
I've flown into Melton once before but in the days before the Cafe. Have driven past and stopped and definitely do good food and coffee. Shame not more places that do a good feed near to the local airport.
@StefanDrury those sunset shots are something else, stunning! thanks for continuing to bring us along with you :)
I've recently discovered your channel and I'm so stoked I did. That twilight shot between the cloud layers was absolutely beautiful.
Yes! Even though you weren't able to show us the night flying experience, those shots were stellar!
Interesting to revisit Melton airport which was my flying base in the early 80s. Back when flying was relatively affordable for a teacher.
Love your work friend! U should come down to Adelaide! May your skies be blue and your winds be low
I just visited the HARS museum at Wollongong. Its so dope.
Thanks for the tip about Caloundra. I’ll check it out.
Thank you for this. You inspire us not to give up on our dreams.
Great video👍👍👍
great content Stef - thanks for sharing
Man I am so envious of people that can wake up on a nice day and have the thought "you know what, im gonna quickly fly to a coffee place 15 min away with a couple of other people that also share my passion"
One day I plan on getting there, only need to get myself a PPL... and a plane. Already live close to an airfield, but missing the two important ones. Love your videos Stef :)
Great video and just unfortunate that you couldn’t capture that night flight. That shot between those cloud layers was my highlight!

Love your vids mate! Looks like you had a fair bit of concentration in that close up coffee shot! 😂.
Stef, you’re joining the rest of us older pilots who now need to wear glasses when flying! I have a clear set like yours, plus a tinted set for those sunny Melbourne days.

I’m 5 mins away from shellharbour airport. Landing approach is straight over my roof. Next time I’ll be looking to see if the next one is EYZ!!!
The 747 has the record for the longest flight ever and also the shortest 747 flight ever from sydney to Wollongong
Another great video! My home airport, Shellharbour, I look forward to dropping in at Moorabbin when I next fly to Melbourne. Gotta say though, it's a bit daunting with 5 runways when you are not used to using towered airfields!!
I love your videos man makes me wanna learn to fly. My dream job is to fly for the RFDS
Stef, I love that photo of you and OJA in the back. You should definitely get it framed
Thanks, yeah that’s a good shot hey. Amazing what you can get just out of iPhones these days.
No way! Awesome quality
If you're ever flying to the Hunter Valley, check out the Kittyhawk Cafe at Scone airport.
ahh that's good to see they saved that 747... Ive been on that flight from london to sydney :D we got a bunch of free stuff which i still have today :D
I love this stef - I’ve been pretty much priced out of GA at the moment so these types of videos are great
Awesome video Stef! Thanks for sharing, love the clouds during that sunset!
Great work Stef. Getting my faa 61.75 license next week and flying over there. Thanks for doing a tutorial on how to do it a while back.
Thats awesome Steph. I remember flying a Nanchang into Melton back around 2010 for an airshow.
Love your work
Looks like it’s still there! :o
Hi Steph, Geat video great to see some older type aircraft, would like to see if you can get to Temora airport, visited a few years ago with work while I was in the area.a really great collection of aircraft.
Cheers keep up the great work
My son did 2 navigation flights to Melton and loved the burgers there, said it was worth the flight there lol
Hey Stef Love the videos @1:28 coming off the trailing edge is that fuel venting or water or am I dreaming right behind the tab ???
Shellharbour Airport is where I got my RPL only a few months ago
Bloody great video as usual, thanks Stefan. Must have taken ages to edit! Love the shot between the cloud layers at sunset!
NNNNNnnnnnnooooo...... was hanging out waiting for night flight video since seeing the tease. Oh well still some good snippets.Still a great video.
i was gonna have a lesson out of tyabb but the one day Melbourne had bad weather was the flight haha, I wish I owned a plane like you
The days of being able to fly for breakfast or grab a hamburger are just about gone in Australia. Great video Stef, Speaking of Avalon are you going to the airshow in March, i have my ticket just have to see how work is.
Great video as always Stef. Maybe I missed this in your prior videos, but when did you start wearing glasses in the cockpit? Is that new?
you should fly to Brown Bros at Milawa for an awesome feed
I am jealous. You are living the life I dreamt of. Keep on..
Love your stuff, as always! A few quick questions: who washes your plane and how often? What product do you use to clean the exhaust grime off the belly? EYZ is always so gloriously shiny!!!
I thought I was watching a southwest flight from your high speed taxi 😀
Stefan, love the Pizza, did you watch the "dairy is scary" video?
I was wondering when you might put that video up. Having recently passed my PPL i hope to make Shellharbour my first destination.
Hey Stef, Mid February I will be taking my 15y/o daughter to her first trial introductory flight at Lethbridge YLED and will send through a coffee report. Sorry no nancy Oatmeal latte though....😏

Awesome..
I don't know Stef, the AP-3C Orion in the background is better! Keep the Eps coming this year mate.
Haha, Steven liked that one too, but it’s always the 747 for me.
The music in this episode reminds me of sim city.
What it’s all about. ❤️
Hi Stef, very entertaining as usual. After being subscribed for a number of years suddenly a question dawned on me. Is there a connection between Milkshake and YMMB? Like MOO, for instance?
Nicely done stefan! ❤ but I have a question, can you feel the heat through your windshield?
On the ground they can feel warm to the touch but with the airflow when flying no, they’re not hot.
The coffee was better, because it was served with kerosine smell. Maybe your local coffee can install a kerosine air freshener, altough I doubt that non pilots would enjoy that.
My father in law used to fly that 747 :D
Hey mate, i just wanted to ask you a question. I know your often around the Bankstown area, I was wondering if you would pick Sydney Flight College or Basair? I heard some negativity around Basair. I would love to know your input. Thanks!!
You must "buzz" Moorabbin tower 😂

4:15 I have been in that plane

I’m sorry I was the 748th person to like your video, I was tempted to leave it as 747..!
Stefan, are you vegan? Guess I missed a detail. Save flights and thank you for your videos.
new glasses??
Glasses?!
Pizza without pineapple! 😫
