- This might just be the worst E3 of all time. Despite showcases of Stalker 2, Metroid Dread, Halo Infinite, and Battlefield 2042, the rest of the several hours of conferences offered nothing but teaser trailers and minor game announcements. Plus a host of glorified DLC. What a waste of time.

I had a keyboard and you just walked up to the bar and made your playlist with your mates and let it play. Now video games are seen the same way as movies and companies have to shove in progressive garbage to appease the mainstream. But to be honest not much of the mainstream even supports that shit and it's just a vocal minority being catered to. I love PC gaming because at least the platform (Steam) is still very wild west and you can say/do whatever you want on Steam, no ToS bullshit and rules against "hate speech", Steam doesn't play big brother with its users.

Video games used to bring me happiness... I have so many fond memories of many different titles. It's really quite depressing to see my teenage years were the end of the golden age of video games. The true end of an era.

I remember when E3 was hype. Gamers would wait all year for the amazing presentations and booths. And every company would unload their entire arsenal for the coming year and they’d try to one up each other for the attention
Never gave a fuck for E3. I care about quick releases, not about seeing games some trailer of a game years in advance. Forza Horizon is the big example here. Announce, show gameplay and release in 5 months. That's how it's done.
E3 was once the object of discussion in my middle school cafeteria when the Nintendo "Revolution" and Smash Bros. Brawl was on the horizon. Aside from that it has mostly been corporate wankery anyhow and "dis our shit. Dis what it spose to do. Now buy it, nerds. Or ask your parents to."
And even that was less insulting than this rainbow vomit parade with "oh yeah also we have games" tacked on as an addendum because it is at time of writing, 2021, eh?

What I used to love about E3 was that it was about the community and showing what they want in the most hype way possible. Now it’s just commercialized to be quick and “efficient” but it just comes across as very boring

I remember as a kid. Getting so excited for E3. Hell, I remember as a kid I would randomly search MW3 trailers and kept watching a bunch of fanmade trailers and thinking they were legit tell I finished the trailer. Then one day I looked MW3 up and ACTUAL FOOTAGE! I had no idea what E3 was at the time. Just saw a press conferance. I used to think E3 was one of the coolest things around.
Now days I struggle to get myself to watch the entire presentation and usually only end up watching one of them. Even then I mostly just watch the reveal trailers.
I really miss the old days of E3. That gameplay preview of black ops 1 hit SO different 🥺

Grew up in the 90s I miss the good old E3 days getting my game pro in the mail.
That's what i came here to comment on. And everything i saw commented made me miss it even more. Remember how thick game magazines were then? People say oh it was more adverts, but it had more everything. Like they were trying to build something big and quality was the thing that mattered above all. They tried new things and got experimental. And it kept things interesting because you didn't know what would come next, what new experiences you were looking forward to.
Now they don't care. They have all their money, the hard work has already been done, the industry is established. So they plop out the same old turd and try lame ways to hype it up which don't work. They still make their money either way so they do not care. Whether it's loot boxes or whatever, even garbage cell phone games bring in enough money.
And we can feel it, it's obvious that they don't care now. The closest thing we have to how it was, is indie games. But because there's so many half ass indie games there for a quick buck it's become hard to sort through the mess.
What we need unfortunately is a major video game crash. And then the people who actually care, about what matters, can rebuild.

God I miss all days. I still have an original Super Nintendo, original N64, and for a while I had an Atari with a styrofoam ice chest full of games

And i had all this time to play what was on display, systems i knew that my parents would never get me. It was all so amazing to me back then. Like one game i remember on display was splatterhouse, think on Sega CD. I just wanted a chance to experience it for myself.
Actually i remember wanted gaming stuff so bad. I would have dreams that i had a gameboy, and it was so cool, so exciting like i really treasured it so much... then I'd wake up. Look around for as reality sinks back in. Kinda depressing.
Kids now are spoiled beyond belief. It's changing everything too, there's free to play, emulation and demos and used games are cheap. I don't think they'll ever know what it was like, how much can they appreciate games when that 'magic' surrounding it was never there? They never went through the anticipation and wanting and wondering if they'll get a gameboy they dream of having.
It's sort of natural that things ended up here i know that. But it still sucks. That's why i wonder if a game crash would be a good thing at this point

Don't get me wrong I grew up Poor trailer park my mom worked her ass off to take care of us and when Super Nintendo came out and we woke up and saw that's what we got which was the only thing that we got it was crazy. Was grateful and thankful for anything that she could get us. I do think that there needs to be a game Crash to put perspective into the heads of all the younger Generations. You are right they do not know how lucky and privileged they are to have everything at the palm of their hands. The fact that they have a computer in their pocket at all times that have all human knowledge and what they choose to do with it amazes me. And in the direction that the game industry is going there's probably going to be a downfall games like there was back in the late 70s early 80s. Too much politics and agendas being put in it. I play video games to get away from reality I don't want to experience that in my games.
I used to look forward to E3. I remember my buddies and I throwing a whole viewing party the entire week. Not chips and juice. BBQ, potato skins, root beer floats as far as the eye could see. Good times, man.

You know, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that the “golden days” of gaming are simply over. It’s not interesting anymore and I think we’re over it... it’s not like back in 2012 or even 2015 when we were all hyped for a video game, or kids would be talking about an e3 game in school and we’d all be hyped for it. It’s simply not the same because we are being dished out unfinished buggy pay to play games, it’s repetitive.
Lol. I'm 33. Had steam from the day it came out. Was playing red Baron flight sims on MSDos based PCs when I was 4 or 5. I grew up through almost all of gaming minus it's early infancy in the late 70s/80s. There are still plenty of great games out there to be played. I just am patient and take my time when choosing and buying a game. Don't fall for hype just let the product speak for itself. There have always been bad games, bugs and problems. It's nothing new. Yes the corporate pressure has amped up and created some issues of it's own but overall when it comes down to it I have no problem finding games I enjoy new and old all the time.

Franchises like CoD, Assassin's Creed, Madden/Fifa and various others have completely lost any meaning and reason to exist other than pure greed and profit. Why would developers want to spend all their time and money developing the 16th iteration of a game? A paycheck...however that's why they come off as soulless. The passion is no longer there on those projects. So when it comes to that market so agree. Where I disagree is that all of gaming is like that. There are plenty of great games out there that I enjoy that are brand new. You just have to look outside of the high budget AAA title base that I mentioned earlier. Games are supposed to be art. When you take the creativity out of it of course they come out cookie cutter and boring. I don't find my favorite music on the radio...
Yeah I think what killed it was people's expectations and wants with the new age of tech coming in..... Like me and my friend were talking about games back in the day they didn't have that many gigabytes and s*** they're really small games which simple stories and simple ways to beat them...... Nowadays people have high tech PCS and consoles that can run crazy graphics and because of that people are expecting more and more from the developers. Which causes developers to make really big complex long games and those big complex long games have a lot of algorithms and can be even harder program wise.... Which makes for a lot of bugs and can have a lot of mistakes because of how big the capacity of the game is nowadays..... And on top of that it takes way longer to make because you try really hard not to make bugs but then people complain about your game taking too long to come out.... Like people are impatient for games lately and it's very annoying.... Like people think video games are just oh someone's in the office and you make it and then it's done and you can give it to me within a year and that's not true especially with games nowadays..... There's so much coding that goes into it now and the game is so freaking big that any little wrong mistake can set back months of progress.... And because of that takes longer for it to come out and then when it does come out sometimes they're just like f*** it it has one bug but it's still playable because their brains are so exploded from all the programming they did for the past 3 years on a game..... And then the s***** part is when the game comes out and people complain about it taking forever to come out and that there's one bug in it .... I think people need to be reasonable with the developers nowadays because the pressure is really high for them and no one really sees that...

And then you got to hope that there's no bugs in it flows smoothly because games nowadays is very easy to tell when things don't seem to go smoothly.... It's way more complex and I feel like if people start understanding the developers and giving them more time and then maybe we'll get better games..... Like we've all modded before right and you know when you mod a game and then it starts glitching out and you don't know which mod is causing the glitch sometimes so you have to like free download it and delete every mod...... Now imagine that but on a way grander scale with way more complex games nowadays...... Just thinking about it I'd be like f*** this game every time I make one..... And I feel like it's also why developers are talking about their games way before they're out like 3 years before they're out or 4 years before they all because they know it's going to take them a long time for it to come out but they want people to know that they're making it

Facts I've been more interested in older games in the last two years
The only new games i buy are from the yakuza series, beccouse Ryu Ga Gotoku studios actually puts effort into making a great storie, with great mechanics and great side-stories.
I still buy new shet... rarely. Definetly going more to older games. Better, no wokeness, cheaper. Win win win.

A few months ago, I pretty much completely dropped gaming, outside of replaying older titles. The industry just isn't worth supporting anymore, and a lot of the titles we see now are cynical cash-grabs. E3 just hugely reinforced this whole mess. What a shame to see such a wonderful medium reduced to which company can swindle it's fans more while lecturing them on morality.
I dropped 'new' gaming after AC5. I'd been bitter about it since CoD Warfare 2 & it's copy paste, and the fact that EA has been propped up by casual sports gamers for decades.
I mostly play indie and my huge backlog of old games these days. Cheaper, and no preaching.
These woke people are infiltrating every facet of America society, from military recruiting commercials to schools and now all video games.
How much more are we going to take? they are destroying everything we hold dear to our hearts
It's such a stupid approach in my opinion. It's like stopping listening to new music because there are many cheap pop-stars who are doing the same repetetive shit for decades. There are so many great titles released every year. And I'm not talking about indie games only but also about major triple A tittles. Sure the companies are doing the best to promote SJW's shit because they think it will make the more money for them but not everyone is like that. Not even mentioning that you don't have to care about politics of companies. And if you don't want to support them... well, you can always pirate them.

I don't think there ever was a golden age for gaming. Because games just got better and better since the 70s. But yeah there were a few dull and boring years for games like this one. But that doesn't mean we're going to continuously get dissapointing games.

And I was merely trying to help. You claimed that you had to emulate because TVs don't support older consoles, but that is only true if you don't want to use anything but a newer TV.
It is _not_ true that nobody has CRTs anymore. I have one sitting right beside me, and so do many other people. A CRT is only as bulky as you want it to be. You don't _have_ to use a larger CRT. You could use a smaller one, which would be literally no bulkier than a stuffed backpack. Or you could use a much smaller one, but in that case the price almost certainly goes _up,_ not down.
And then you don't even have to use a CRT. There are older non-CRT TVs/displays that have analog inputs. But do you know what I think would be the best option for you now that I think of it? A DLP projector. I have an 800x600 Acer X1161 and a 1920x1080 BenQ W1070, and both projectors are great for gaming and have analog input. They are both toaster-size, and can project an image as small as ~30", so even a small room is sufficient.

It really is so annoying that most AAA are unfinished, glitchy, and a waste of money until many patches later. It used to be that a game would come out, and day one you could buy it because it was going to be awesome…. Now you just have to wait for reviews, and sales.. because all these deadlines Dev’s are expected to follow just gives us unfinished stuff.. I’d rather wait and pay for a finished game..
People keep rushing projects, anytime a developer announces they need more time to finish the project the fan base immediately goes up in arms demanding they release the game on time even if it isn’t ready

And for the others that worked their way to the job only for this to happen? That sows the fields for racism and sexism further due to this. I remember when I got bullied for being a gamer and it was considered uncool.. I miss the excitement for E3 and being able to expect complete and polished games and seeing what was coming out. Now it's just political pandering to every "gamer" out there who probably just plays candy crush all of 30min a day on their mobile. @Zerozerozero that last part just isn’t true. Especially now with all access. Trying to purchase part and build a PC on par with the series x just isn’t possible. It would be around 1000 dollars. And if you just want a gaming machine, it’s a no brainer. The initial cost difference is too big over the course of a generation. Now, it can maybe be justified over multiple generations where you buy more than one console. But if you don’t, and just stick with the series x, it’s the better economic value.
AAA video games are just a mess of self-induced problems, so of course their trade show will be just as bad.

I have to disagree about metroid prime 4. A game being delayed isn't always a bad thing some games just need more time in the oven.

After all that crap, they then went to Retro Studios the OG creators of Metroid Prime and were like yeah uhh could you make us another Metroid Prime game? Total waste of time if you ask me.
