Your school lets you sing suicidal songs in the talent show? Mine won't let you say that you hate yourself without sending you to the counselor's office
First verse I'm high above the city I'm standing on the ledge The view from here is pretty And I step off the edge Chorus And now I'm fallin', baby Through the sky, through the sky I'm fallin', baby, through the sky It's my callin' Baby, don't you cry, don't you cry I'm fallin' down through the sky Toward the street that I'm from Oh, Broadway, here I come Broadway, here I come Second Verse The pressure it increases The closer that I get I could almost go to pieces But I'm not quite there yet See I've been bravin' crazy weather Drownin' out my cries I'll pull myself together I'm focused on the prize Chorus I'm fallin', baby Through the sky, through the sky I'm fallin', baby, through the sky It's my callin' Baby, don't you cry, don't you cry I'm fallin' down through the sky Its a tune you can hum Oh, Broadway, here I come Hmm-mm-mm-mmm Bridge Will I remain the same, or will I change a little bit? Will I feel broken or totally complete? Will I retain my name when I'm the biggest, hugest hit? Or will I blend in with the rest of the street? Third Verse The people all are pointing I bet they'd never guess That the saint that they're anointing Is frightened of the mess But even though I fear it I'm playin' all my cards Baby, you are gonna hear it When I give them my regards Chorus I'm falling, baby Through the sky, through the sky I'm fallin', baby, through the sky It's my calling Baby, don't you cry, don't you cry I'm fallin' down through the sky And I refuse to go numb Oh, Broadway, here I come Broadway, here I come Broadway, here I come Broadway, Broadway, here I come Here I come! And the last thing I hear As the impact grows near Is it a scream or a cheer? Well, never mind, I'll never find out 'Cause Broadway, I am here
What I really love about this song and basically about almost every song is how much of its meaning depends on personal interpretation. Depending on where you are in life you either hear a song about dreams or about suicide. And I think that both interpretations are correct. Even though author intended it to be one way it totally depends on you how you interpret the lyrics (as Jeremy once said with Losing My Mind)
This is easily the best song from Smash. I've always seen it as being about Kyle more than anyone else, although it could apply to almost any of the characters in this show.
Caitlin Hsu It's got a similar-ish ideal about wanting to get somewhere, but the song is more about his wanting to make it big and realizing that the quickest way to fame is jumping to his death. People are bound to notice him when he hits the ground. The song addresses the tragedy of the suicide of young artists, really.
Depending on how you spin it it could be about that. Depending on how you spin the dream like concept of Santa Fe for Jack it already is about it just the way it is.. Santa Fe is supposed to be some perfect place in his mind right? Some people think that dying can get you to such a place.
Jeremy Jordan is a definite God. Everytime I see him whether he plays a bad guy on Law & Order or Beauty with a voice of an Angel on Smash he is just a wonderful talented man who I love personally.
I'm high above the city I'm standing on the ledge The view from here is pretty And I step off the edge And now I'm fallin', baby Through the sky, through the sky And I'm fallin', baby through the sky It's my callin', baby Don't you cry, don't you cry And I'm fallin' down through the sky Toward the street that I'm from Oh, Broadway, here I come Broadway, here I come The pressure it increases The closer that I get I could almost go to pieces But I'm not quite there yet See, I've been bravin' crazy weather Drownin' out my cries I pull myself together I'm focused on the prize I'm fallin', baby Through the sky, through the sky I'm fallin', baby through the sky It's my callin', baby Don't you cry, don't you cry 'Cause I'm fallin' down through the sky And it's a tune you can hum Oh, Broadway here I come Mmmmmmmm Will I remain the same Or will I change a little bit? I've listened to this song every night since I promised myself I'd become a Broadway actor. It's really motivational (even though, yeah, it's about suicide).
Actually, its only about suicide when Amanda sings it. When Jeremy sings it, the "falling down to Broadway" metaphor is about falling into success. (+Flannery McGreevy Don't worry, Amanda is saved by Jeremy and then gets a huge success on Broadway :D)
When you always thought this was a happy song about a guy who managed to follow his dreams, and then you really listen to the song one time and find out it's about suicide...
If anyone sees this and is thinking of taking themselves out. You have purpose, there’s always light after darkness, the darkest nights have the brightest sunrises, just wait for it.
Its not tho. Its not even about a guy who followed his dreams and made it, its about a guy taking a risk (stepping off the ledge) and ends before we find out if he makes it or not. We don't know if he survived or not. It's about the struggle of actors, and other similar professions, that HAVE to "make it" in order to get enough work to be paid enough to justify continuing, or otherwise quitting their passion so they can survive BEFORE they crash.
I think it's two sides of a coin for an artist who takes the leap towards their dream. Will they see their art loved and appreciated in life or after death? Either way the person in the song feels like they'll finally hit Broadway with either action that is mentioned in the song.
To this day I find it hard to sing this song with the same emotion. This is a deceptively hard song to sing. Seriously try singing it with the same level of emotion and ups and downs. You'll find difficulty. I wish I could include this easily into my karaoke repituer but it so hard to get right that I can't!
I go to a preforming arts school and we have a show decated to broadway and I've been into broadway since I was pulled out of my mom's stomach! This is the perfect song to sing for the performance and also a great opening for the Broadway Show at my school!
