The Imperial Guard is definitely one of the more difficult but satisfying factions to play as. You spend a lot of your time just holding a few points as the enemy constantly batters you with their numbers, but eventually you start pushing them back with your fuckawesome tanks and Kasrkin squads. Their more familiar military aesthetic certainly gives them a more grounded feel than the others as well.
I am a Turtler in RTS games and they fit my playstyle perfectly, a strong defence (defensive structures) while they build up an assault force (Armour) for a big push.
The 5 stages of Winter Assault -Oh so the Titan is a weapon -Sending a Landraider and a Baneblade? Hell of a weapon. -The Titan is in this Cathedral fortress? -It has a face. I always found it funny they called it Winter Assault, and the game never mentions anything about the winter. There is no blizzard level or anything else you normally see in a game that takes place in a snow environment (like keep your troops inside when its to cold, low sight range because its snowing)which is fairly surprising they stayed focused on the fighting.
Gotta say, i think the snow fits pretty good, with the guard, corpses tend to pile up a bit, which stand out pretty good in contrast to the white. 2:03 MULTILASERS? MULTILASERS!
This time last year I was saying Thank You for 500 subscribers; Now i've got to say thank you for well over 1500! I'm sorry about the wait for this kind of stuff: on top of being pretty lazy, I started University in September and that's put a lot of my attention elsewhere. Dark Crusade's video is already in production however!...ish...I've got a lot of footage for it and vague script ideas. Progress!
+ThunderPsyker it's quite alright that you have a lot on the place. this video was grand, Thunderpsyker! good review. i can't wait to hear what you have to say about Dark Crusade and eventually Soulstorm.
+ThunderPsyker Hey man take your time, work as good as this is not rushed. Lay back and form the ideas, smoke some weed if it helps. Don't talk to Karl though he may just start giving you his form of "motivation" :3 Though I will say I am excited for your funny and detailed take on the Dark Crusade and "that" game which came afterwards.
Needing to destroy the convoy during the Disorder campaign is the hardest damn thing I've had to do in like forever. Makes me feel like I'm actually earning my victory.
I used to love replaying the defense mission where you had to set up defenses and build up your forces in order to protect the eldar from the orks and hold out until the baneblade arrives for backup. My old computer used to overheat quite often because of it too ^^;
Boy I can't wait for thunder to continue reviewing. It'll be like The Price is Right, he'll get up to the top and go over with soulstorm and we'll get the Price is Right meme horn.
+Earndil Slartibartfast I can't wait to become that one kid that got Retsupuraed after making a Transformers for MSX "review" Then I'll truly become the Livid Media Critic
When I transitioned for DoW to DoW: Winter Assault, I was really taken back. The difficulty got cranked up to 11 and every mission was really hard to complete. But then, isn't that WH40k is all about? Spending 30 mins maintaining a defense so that you could muster enough forces to make the final push? Damn, DoW 2 should've followed this formula
I love these reviews! You're the first one I've seen to use so many and so good blink-and-you'll-miss messages and moments in your videos. They all make me laugh.
Just finished DOW1 last night, and WA tonight, as the Imperial Guard. I thought the last two missions were… absolutely ridiculous. Mission 4 wasn’t AS bad if you just spam Ogryn squads and stick by the convoy, but I had to basically rely on the Baneblade for all of Mission 5, first to destroy all the Ork and Chaos bases, then to almost solo the monoliths. I didn’t even realize you had to click and manually fire the Titan Weapons, but that certainly made things better
Just came here from SaintJam's new video on DOW:WA. I have to thank you TP for establishing the title of my childhood's favorite hero - General "Humanity: Fuck Yeah" Stern.
Honestly, the kaskin's audio of screaming "Stop for No-one" is basically how i played these games. Commander tells me to hold the line, but i'm already out of there and gone blowing up the enemy base XD
Whenever I have the mood for it, I'll play a dawn of war game of imperial guard vs imperial guard. Its a fun time as the bodies pile up on both sides, leaving whole fields covered in guardsman corpses. One of my favorite images I saved was a point captured, where in front of it were the bodies of fallen units that had fought for it.
I had a pretty good experience with Winter Assault. Until the final level where I nearly steam rolled the Chaos and Ork forces with a massive guard push, only to have a massive swarm of enemies big enough to literally turn a quarter of the map red appeared from equally literally no where (I saw them spawn in from the edge of the map) and completely annihilate the army
2:08 Warboss Gorgutz (who first appeared in WA) has survived WA, DC, SS and DOW 3 and according to the wiki "he is almost certain to make yet another appearance".
Another great game that's admittedly in my "very hard RTS campaigns" list, alongside C&C: Tiberium Wars (though that's mostly the faulty of wonky patches) and Company of Heroes 2.
Great work, very entertaining. also kinda funny that I commented on your first review yesterday asking for an update on when this was coming out. Anyways with these reviews you will build a sub base quickly in my opinion :) thanks for the video.
What it lacked in campaign length, it made up for with frustratingly hard missions. But it was enjoyable. The best in the series was Dark crusade though.
+ThunderPsyker Great video man, you are like one of the only one who makes videos about Warhammer ( not to mention that you make good videos). Keep up the great work! :D
HOLY FUCK!!! This video just triggered an honest to god flashback to this things demo, which i played when i was just a stupid kid. It was incredible, i must have tried the same mission over and over again, watching the beautiful carnage happen among the snow. I had no idea what was going on at the time, but it stuck with me as some of the best experiences in gaming i've ever had. I 100% need to purchase this game now, there's no way i'm letting myself forget about it like i've done for all these years.
And we slowly come to my personal favorite of the series, Dark Crusade. There was just something about watching your commander banter with the commander of the faction you were invading that just helped make invading an enemy stronghold worth it, you know?
8:05 you are not the only one. i dislike when a game gives you no choice in colors by forcing you to play as either one faction, one character that his colours are mostly grey and black (most games.) or (though that last one might be just me) don't allow me to chose colors of friend and foe to see them both as i want.
WA will always have a special place in my heart as i was in the most watched replay of the expansion and it stayed that way all the way until the next one :)
It was this game that made me fall in love with the eldar. Also the fact the eldar ending is the cannon ending is b b b based. Taldeer is probs my my fav farseer in the universe simply because of her voice actor in this game and the cool lines from dark crusade like "let our enemies fight themselves". Such a cool faction.
technically the ending is a bodgepodge cause the guard beat the necrons the eldar juiced the titans guns when the guard wasn't looking thus damaging them and gazgulil beat up crull and took his skull
I like winter assault as well, however I wish I could get past one of the holdout missions... and the textures on some of the things in the game weren't so screwed up. Why do Kasrkin make bad bus drivers?
They stop for no-one.
+SargeWX I know its only been 2 hours but this is already an underrated comment
+ThunderPsyker Best response I've heard to it is:
Kasrkin don't care whether their food gets burnt or not.
They're honored by your crust.
Why you don't bring a Kasrkin Captain on a forge world? He'll raze the planet if he must.
Khorne berserker would kill him and then he would say: "We need a new driver, this one is dead." :D
Why do Chaos Marines make bad racers?

You ever wonder why they sent Cadians rather than a cold environment based regiment like the Valhallans?
Because brand recognition.
Cause the Imperium wanted to get the job done right
Valhallans were on a tea break.
Probably since they were nearby. Do not underestimate logistics.
Isn’t Cadia basically space Canada in terms of weather ? That planet would only be mildly cold by Cadian standard in that case
+Hippie629 To be honest I think the snow covers enough of the 'winter' aspect, though I'm very happy they provide the 'assault' in absolute spades.
Gotta say, i think the snow fits pretty good, with the guard, corpses tend to pile up a bit, which stand out pretty good in contrast to the white.

Your reviews are among the most entertaining I've seen. You have a future as a prominent UA-camr!
