Putting the knobs in the same place is useless when parts have tolerances. The pots in each aren't the same spec so they will not produce the same tone at the same position. People need to understand this already.
It would be marginal at best. Typical components have about a 20% tolerance, so over the full range the difference would be quite small. I think it’s a good enough comparison without measuring the pot values.
It sounded like you had a blanket over your amp, until you switched the HP switch. Then it sounded much better. They both sounded so similar, I wouldn't fork out the extra for the OCD. I'd go with the Joyo. ✌️🇦🇺
I have both and used the OCD for a light overdrive in front of my Plexi for the excellent touch response it has and awesome hair it puts on the sound - albeit, its going through a 50 watt Marshall and I can only play at 3.5/4 volume in band rehearsal because its so damn loud - but I love it. I got a UD to replicate my OCD settings and after sometime tweaking and A/B to match sound. I'll be damned, I can get the same sound and response from the UD - just took some time. Matching pot setting is useless. I can now use my OCD for all its overdrive/distortion glory. I play clean, loud and with a little hair on my tone for my main sound. Use the OCD for awesome 70/80s classic rock and stack the two with a spark clean drive and analog delay get 80's metal sonic heaven.
Hi, that clean sound lacks a lot of trebble to begin with, like you set the amp with the trebble control all the way back at 1 (If this is a real Fender amp) or 0 if it´s an emulation or something. That alone makes the test useless. Who plays a clean tone so dark, you won´t cut in a mix even if you´re the only player in the band. Anybody thinks can make a demo of anything in the guitar world. Learn to eq your gear then make a proper A vs B test
Some of the Joyo UD's have a Germanium Diode in D2 that was put in reverse order due to the incorrect silk screen orientation printed on the circuit board.. Around the year 2010. This gives slightly asymmetrical positive MOSFET clipping and negative (MOSFET + Ge) clipping and muddy sound. Look up info about it, open it up and see if 2010 is printed on your board.
Id say that if you don't adjust the knobs identically you can get it very close. All the demos I see the person doing the demo almost always mirrors the knobs which is annoying. Use the tone control!? Also guitars pickups amps vary as well. Joyo pedals are inexpensive but they do a good job of mimicking the pedals they are based on *if tweaked properly. The same thing with Behringer. Watch Josh Scott of JHS pedals UA-cam (what's the deal with Behringer pedals) They do blind tests and most of the monkeys can't tell the difference.
I like the Joyo better than the Fulltone. It's more compressed and has more gain. Also I love the muddy tone bc it resonates early 2000's post hardcore music which I'm into.
What we have here is called confirmation bias; If ANYBODY paid over 4 times as much money for a product that's ALMOST identical, I'm sure they'd WANT to like the expensive one, LoL... There would be all these "subtle differences" and small "nuances" that an UNBIASED person most likely WOULDN'T hear...
Nice comparison. Well done. I am looking for an OCD v2 or v1.7, but prices off the map right now so considering the JOYO version until I find an OCD for a decent price. Thanks for doing the video. Phil NYC / Jersey Shore Are

The Joyo Ultimate Drive is a cheap pedal but its tone is expensive than its price hahaha on my opinion people, if you're budget's not enough I recommend this Cheap pedal
The Joyo is a rough copy of the v1.4, pull the diode and it's a v1.3. The thing is the UD often had the diode installed backwards, an easy fix but a necessary fix nonetheless.
The only differences are that the OCD has a different case and is around €150 more expensive than the Ultimate Drive. In terms of sound, these two are completely identical. So why buy the expensive one when you can get a cheaper one that is equivalent or identical??? The JoJo is also available as a Harley Benton - Ultimate Drive at Thomann
This is how you showcase these kind of very similar pedals. I have the UD and i think it sounds almost the same as the ODC granted one dosent have the tone in the bottom lol. Good shit!
The fact is that the Chinese companies simply copy the circuitry. And I guess when it comes to such a ubiquitous pedal as an overdrive, so long as you know what style you like, you're likely to find a Chinese variant that suits. And the old story as far as I'm concerned, we all need to factor in the rest of our gear & how it's used (band/home/recording etc) so the difference is likely neither here, nor there. That said I don't look at Chinese variants, at least not yet, and am still happy to save as required and pay more for a pedal I perceive is better, both in the tone I'm looking for and the overall build. Still I get why there's been this massive rise in Chinese pedals in recent years. The quality of the known brands appears fine generally and their replications are largely pretty good. But, they don't do anything unique & definitely not groundbreaking (not many pedals are). So, whilst boutique builders will put considerable time into R&D (which in itself costs), these sorts of companies basically just pump out low cost clones. Each to their own. Another top vid and thoughts go out to you for your original guitar teacher. Stay strong to all concerned. 🎸🎸🎸
@@thislisa if the decision was based purely on aesthetics I'd respect that. In fact, the design is pretty ugly for my taste. I just find the religious reasons stupid. I'm sorry.

I have both these pedals I can get them to sound identical just got to move that tone knob a little more
Absolutely right. Even Josh of JHS pedals emphasizes this point in one of his comparison videos.
As an electronics engineer, I completely agree!
Agreed I just turned the tone up slightly passed 12 and it was identical next to OCD at 12
The OCD has like 8 versions too, the Ultimate Drive is probably a copy of a different version than the one you have.
It sounded like you had a blanket over your amp, until you switched the HP switch. Then it sounded much better. They both sounded so similar, I wouldn't fork out the extra for the OCD. I'd go with the Joyo. ✌️🇦🇺
That HP switch is pretty important, as you say, it sounds like a wet blanket over the speaker.
I don’t like my Joyo Ulimate Drive. It’s really muddy. Much better if you want a good cheap clone of the OCD is the Mooer Hustle Drive.

The Ultimate Drive sounds great through a clean high headroom amp with a Blues Driver in front of the UD. It kind of tightens up the bottom end.
The OCD with a few tweaks would melt for face off
Three years later the JOYO is only good for a paperweight.
Sounds like it, but not in the same league ?

The price tag doesn't matter, it's all about the way it feels when you play it. If the Joyo is more enjoyable to play, then that's the one for you.

@@uptownphotography I know the pedal you're talking about, but no I haven't tried it.
the pots in the ocd are probably better and higher quality, my UD's gain pot has a sudden jump
I've experienced that with Joyo pedals before.
The Ultimate Drive is awesome! Don't know or care about the OCD or how much it costs. The U O makes my rig punishingly heavy. The Joyo brings joy!
Holy low end mud Batman...either way.

I have the Joyo i like it a lot, thanks for the comparison i just don't see the price difference so I'm good
I have both and both are good - ocd a little clearer, UD good for rock tones though - I more often use Hp mode which improves bite as you demonstrate
Yep I own a Ultimate Drive I use it to play raw Thrash Metal and I got a nice Load and Reload tone out of it.

The OCD is a little brighter in the upper mids but the Joyo still does the thing.

Hi, ocd is a copy from a voodoo lab overdrive (with minor tweeks like the joyo)
There's very few, if any original overdrives anymore. They're all based off (or on) another pedal, whether it be a tubescreamer or whatever.
Will you concider the: joyo, ultimate drive, will reach vanhallen tone? Van hallen high gain sound?
Probably not, there's not enough tone shaping options
Sound the same to me but I wouldn't want a demon face on my distortion pedal.
Yeah I think they need to rethink their presentation.
Come on...

In Bloom by Nirvana
is it good to use them for boost?
You could, but it has too much gain for a boost. You're probably better off using it as your base tone then boosting it with something with lower gain
Which version is the OCD?
I know but i wont tell you hahaha i have a secret now.
