DESCRIPTION: DECEMBER 8, 2024 A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A350-1000 (A35K), operating from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), experienced a computer failure that restricted the pilots' ability to confirm whether the landing gear and flaps were in the correct position. Additionally, it was noted that the malfunction may have caused a loss of nose wheel steering. The crew declared a PAN-PAN emergency but later landed safely on JFK's runway 31R.
A dude navigating half the world's worst comms in perfect readbacks by someone who sounds like he could do a leading role in Henry V next week. I love it.
Why are American controllers so obsessed with souls on board and fuel left in hours pounds whatever? In Europe controllers work to get people on the ground safely as quickly as they can while in America they are just working off a checklist it seems and make pilots repeat the same information over and over again while handing them off to 7 different frequencies in a space of 300 km.
Because of the multiple needs they have to fulfill. The towers and centres need to know their endurance (in hours/minutes) while the emergency services need, in case things go sub-optimal, the fuel amount (in pounds), the number of souls (living people) on board and what hazardous materials, if any, are on board. Knowing also how many passengers have reduced mobility (as in infants, old-agers and those with certain disabilities) is also of the good to them in case of specialised equipment needed.
Pilot too wordy . Lot of explaining. ( pan.pan.pan. have flight control issues; aviation controls not giving affirmative position. Need assistance with landing configeration. Souls., fuel aboard.
He’s an emergency aircraft he can be as wordy as he likes. Transmission decorum is for not hogging the channel needlessly and distracting ATC when they’ve got something better or more important to do than talk to you. Once you are an emergency aircraft you are the most important thing for the ATC to handle in that airspace and their primary purpose becomes doing everything in their power to ensure your safe landing on the ground. Anybody else on frequency is supposed to steer clear and shut up and stay out of the way unless they have something vital to air safety to contribute.
Too wordy? It was the twr asking for the nature of the emergency that the pilot has to explain to them, which controllers don't know shlt about aircraft systems anyway.

Great comms by all. Perfect readbacks.
I knew it. Always always always an issue with fuel. He gave it in time remaining, eventually the twr asks for it in pounds.
But how do you know how many partners they have been with?

He was answering the questions asked, not sure how that can be too ‘wordy’.
