  • Best Refugium Macroalgae For Reef Tank CHAETO ULVA CAULERPA Lower Nitrates & Phosphates
    In this video I discuss the best macro algae to use in a reef tank refugium setup. Refugiums are used as a place to grow macro algae outside of the main reef display. Macro algae is normally grown in a refugium in the hopes of reducing nitrates and phosphates in the water to provide better water quality to corals. Macro algae use a lot of nitrates and phosphates as they grow and this makes them ideal candidates for growing in a refugium. The three most popular macroalgae for refugium are chaetomorpha, ulva and caulerpa. These are the species of macro algae i am discussing in this video.

    I don't think the average person appreciates how special your collection of macro algae is. Thanks for sharing your expertise and knowledge, in this area.

      @@EverydayAquarist Hi. I am looking to setup a macro algae tank. I assume that the way for a macro algae tank to thrive is to do the opposite to what you would a reef tank and keep the nutrient levels high…? Is that right?
      Thanks for any advice. 👍

    Ulva, Caulerpa, Chaeto and maybe even Gracilaria can be acclimated to high-end brackish tanks.

    hey man , why do you change your water with all that algae going on ?
    I added a bunch of Ulva Lactuca that I collected from the sea to a tank infested with hair algae and after 2 week they both disappeared !
    any idea why this happened , i did not change anything else .

    If I remember correctly, having a light cycle (some off time) causes asexual reproduction in prolifera.. is that right? So those using it in a fuge keep the lights on 24/7 to prevent spores entering main display. If that is right.. is this the case with any other macros.. like ulva for example?

    • @EverydayAquarist
      @EverydayAquarist  5 років тому +1

      Not really no. I run a regular light cycle and it doesn't make it go sexual. Stress like running out of nutrition or being overcrowded causes asexual reproduction

    • @tomg5405
      @tomg5405 4 роки тому

      What seem to work for some is in the middle of the dark period have a 30 min time with light than turn of the light again as it seems that same than earth plant to go sexual they need a light break minimum from 7-8 hour. I think it is not good to have 24/7 light on, it is absolutely not natural and stress the algae, who now what they release then..

      I have been growing Ulva intestinalis Jimmy waterfall ATS for a number of years. IME intestinalis is the Ulva to grow not Lactuca should be avoided. There are reports of Lactuca being far to invasive and hard to get rid of. With intestinalis most tangs will eat it along with many other fish like rabbitfish. I find Ulva intestinalis to be the fastest growing and most efficent algae at consuming nuitrents esp nitrates. I harvest my Ulva weekly and sell it to other aquarists.
