Hey there,
In this video I take a look at the U shaped air Conditioner by Midea. This is their 8000 btu unit and was purchased for $339.00. (Not $399). typically the room I installed the AC in has a temperature into the 80s. I set the AC at 70 and placed a thermostat across the room. the thermostat reads at 71 - so I am pretty impressed. in 30 days I'll do a follow-up review.

Check out this cool window unit design...Soleus over the sill AC: ua-cam.com/video/eqtS7HamHC8/v-deo.html
Jeff Reviews4u, Which of these two window AC models is your preference, Midea or Soleus?
I’d also be keen to know your preference
@@sumeriansumer1622 midea is more cost effective but I like the whole window view from the Soleus. They both cool...all depends on what style you want.
@@walamoonbeam hope that answers your question.
@@Jeffreviews4u witch one is quieter ? you did the db test in the soleus but not this one to be able to tell
I’ve had my Midea U for just over a year now and I LOVE it! Most energy efficient window unit I’ve ever owned and it will freeze you out of the room!! Increased my power bill by only about $2 per month.
Omg!! I got one weeks ago and haven't installed looking for better visual instructions. Thank you thank you for this video!
I will be installing finally this week
How did it go??
Great review, I like the thought of the U shaped for a few reasons. Most importantly to keep the bugs and critters out since your window can actually close most of the way and it seems like it would be more energy efficient. Congrats on the 19k+
I agree...I didn't mention it but wish I would have, I also like that you can still look out of the window (on the sides). Thanks for your continued support!
Media AC installation, exactly what I was looking for, thank you very much.
Absolutely! happy to help...happy installing.
I really like this design. The compressor is outside and the the evaporator seats inside leaving the noisy part out. Just like a split unit without having to use a professional ti install it. Im getting mine right now. Thanks for the video.
This unit won't work with my window type (sideways slide), but this video was awesome so I kept watching. Super informative! Great details.
Great video! Appreciate your posting it. Mine is being delivered in 2 days and this will be a big help. I'm going to be installing this unit into a fixed opening that a glass block window came out of (basement). I'll be using a 1" insulated aluminum panel at the top. My plan is to cut the panel to size and slide everything in at one time once the support bracket is installed. Wood stops will be used around the perimeter and then covered with metal capping. Once installed I won't be removing it. At least that the plan. We'll see if this works . Thanks again. Very well done.
Hey how did this work out for you? I'm in the same situation
My husband just bought this unit, it works well! The installation video link from the company is pretty helpful!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts - Have a great day and stay safe.
Where can I find this video ??
Just discovered this unit. Will buy it soon. Thank you!
That was an excellent review and instruction video. Thank you very much.
Much more helpful than the install video on midea’s site. Thank you!
Yes I think it's worth the extra effort and money for the quiet. Good job, nice editing and continuity, easy to follow. I use window units for much of summer to give my heat pump some time off. Another plus is you can crank down the bedroom and not the whole house. Congrats on your big number! 44....wow
Good video. I like the new application of keeping the compressor on the outside of the window. Hopefully it is as quiet as the company claims that it is.
That's pretty cool, very different I like the design better than the other ones
Thanks Jeff. You should do a follow up review 3 months on for this unit.
This has worked great all summer. I am getting ready to take it out and store it for the winter...the only disadvantage is all of the sticky pieces cant be used again...i'll have to get new ones for next year.
Awesome review. Thank you
Very cool 😎. I always wondered if that was safe to put that into a window. Nobody is taking that bad boy out. Awesome job 👏 👍
Seriously...after a 45 minute install this unit sells with the house - lol. Thanks for checking it out.
Thanks for showing what it looks on the outside!
Happy to help! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment 🙂
It's a variable speed compressor. It doesn't slam on like a cheap AC unit. It ramps up to running speed so it is inherently quieter.
thanks for sharing about the compressor...it is a pretty quiet machine. definitely worth the $339 (in my opinion)
That's actually the inverter technology. If you really like that any air conditioner with inverter technology would act at the same. It's part of why it costs more money and also the main reason it's so much more energy efficient
Hi! Thank you for guiding us through the installation process. Question? I bought one yesterday for a regular window. The window space is 30 x 21 1/8 inches. An old air conditioner was in that space. My idea is I can cover the sides with concrete bricks and tight the space to the most closest dimensions. I can install the brackets outside very easily and instead of the window place pvc panel in there. What do you think? Thank you.
Thank you for your review, Jeff. I liked this AC and was looking for a review for this AC. However, it looks like the installation brackets are best for houses rather than apartments that are 20 stories high.
I installed mine today in my third floor apt, I have vintage thick brick walls but newer windows. It was not hard at all, take the measurements if it fits you should be ok. Honestly the hardest part for me was leaning out the window getting those feet right but I did dry fits a few times, set them to the 18 position inside and then mounted the bracket and moved them to the 17 position it took about five minutes. It's only been a day so take this as you will but I'm incredibly pleased . hope this helps
Hi Jeff! Believe it or not I was just looking at this unit today! I wish you were able to install mine, when I get it! You're the best👍👍👍👍👍!
Happy to help Mickee...directions are a bit confusing but hopefully this walk-through will help a little. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Thank you! I just subscribed!!
@@mickeeia I appreciate the support! Have a great day and stay safe.
Back in the 1970's thru 80's, ComfortAire of Jackson Michigan made an even better version of this style window air conditioner. It could be installed in either up/down sash windows like yours OR side -sliding windows. That's because the two sections were only connected at one bottom corner instead of all the way across on this Midea. Very quiet units .
Very nice.... and you did an awesome job showing us... but it's too many things to do every summer and disassembling each fall... than one that you just stick in and remove, lol!
It is a little cumbersome to install and remove but I like the design. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Excellent review however won’t work for my horizontal sliding type windows. Ill have to check if there is a unit for my window. Thank you for your informative video, I had no clue the U shape AC existed.
You're right...this is no good for horizontal windows. A side option would be cool...
Got the 10000 for the bedroom and really like it, to the point where I may put that one in the living room and get an 8000 for the bedroom. Had some wifi connection issues, but its still a solid AC
I'm looking to getting the 10K Midea as well. Thanks for sharing.
I think I like everything except that shamefully designed support which I believe will rust quickly. I just bought one today and was trying to figure out that support. Thank you for your post!
Have it, love it!
Very cool, thanks for sharing.
Nice video, it helped a lot
Happy to help. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I'm using your video for the install. Thank you.
what is the length of the bracket on the outside? I have a small balcony i like to cook and am concerned the bracket would be too long and interfere. thank you!
Can you tell me the size of the exterior of the unit? I am limited in space out the window because of the walkway is right outside. I see the bracket is longer, I can change that. Can you give me the size of only the exterior unit and how far from the window (glass) to the end. Thank you
Thanks for the review.
Absolutely! thanks for stopping by and commenting.
thanks for the install help, but what fan setting did you record it on?
I was wondering if I could still control the ac even if I'm not connected on the same wifi?
I had the LG smartapp for my washing machine and I can control them from anywhere even if I'm not connected to the same wifi network
Per the manual the min window opening height is 13.75". This allows for a direct slide in installation from the interior. I have a opening of 8.5" with ground floor exterior access. Do you think it is possible to 'tip' the unit (to get under the 8.5" height) from the exterior to facilitate an install?
In theory you could tip in from the outside; my concern is the opening of the AC isn't wide enough to fit both sashes. Also, is there a 2nd form of egress? You want to make sure not to block an exit.
Very well done review and I like the way you tried to explain the installation instructions. It is a more complicated setup/ installation that most, probably will not attempt. After creating a frame, with an acrylic window, to install a vertical ac cube in a horizontal window(in a rented home) hands down, this would have been the easier option that I had no clue even existed!! Wish I would have found this video sooner! Good job man, this contractor can learn something new by listening and finding a new path, you sir have yourself a new subscriber!!
I appreciate the support. I too have struggled with window units over the years and when I saw this one...i thought how awesome it was. Installation was a bit more difficult than a traditional unit but I'm pleased. Not to mention the noise reduction and still being able to see out of/use the window is awesome. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I just got this AC and gotta say, its nice n quiet ... but that high pitch squeal you hear outside... how much of it are you hearing inside? both before and after you did all the foam work? Im hesitant to cut all my foam up ... if it doesnt fix the squeal inside house, cuz ill return it if I cant get rid of the squeal. I wish they would have made it a non inverter unit, because I believe thats whats generating the squeal ... I dont recall ever hearing that in a non inverter AC unit.
You can’t do better, great video!
I appreciate the kind words. Have a great day and stay safe.
Just wondering, two things is it easy as hell (besides the whole window fitting this and making sure you do every right) to install... two, Can you leave It(ac holder) after you take the ac in for the winter? Will it close (I know it looks like it, but I was just wondering is it possible)
Would've been cool to get an answer on that last part. Not sure wtf you were saying on the first. "Is it easy as hell if you do everything right?" What?
I had a Sears slide in unit. You installed the box just like you'd install a regular air conditioner except the box is hollow, no air conditioner inside. Once the box is in you slide the air conditioner into it. It didn't have any outside supports. My condo is stucco outside and they don't want any support bars leaning on it. I didn't need them with the other unit, do I have to use them with this unit? If I re-enforce the frame or stand it sits on, on the inside of the window and maybe put a board outside on the bottom of the window so the stand sits on it and I close the window on it and put the locks that will hold the window down, will it work? I already bought the unit and I'm waiting for it to get here. I'm going to do it anyway but what do you think?
Yes, you will absolutely need the supports. Otherwise the unit couldn't support itself. I did a review of another type and that one wouldn't need a support platform. check it out here if interested: ua-cam.com/video/eqtS7HamHC8/v-deo.html
I like the soleus saddle unit better. But on this one I like the way the levoirs open and close. Seems like this one would work better in the bedroom, next to the bed. When the bedroom isn't designed to move the bed around in very many directions
Hey Jeff, I have a big removable basement window (not vertical sliding), with enough room for the support frame outside. Would this AC work if I used insulated foam board in place of the sliding window?
It sounds like you could rig something like you mentioned. You'd need to make sure the foam is as thick as a window so there is room for venting.
Is there a way to buy this unit and put it in side sliding window , and also what is that white foam called and where I can find it thanks
Do you think it can be installed without piercing screws in the window?
have it love love love it
It's a pretty impressive design. I like it. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I would love a $5.000 Main AC repair, one of mine was $16,000. Found out that is typical for a 20 year old unit due to all the Freon chemical changes. Right after one of two of mine (lower floors) was repaired, the second one for the top floor went out. I have been doing without, heat rises so winters have not been a problem yet. I purchased the 12,000 BTU and was looking for some good video's on it. I would like to have seen on where the shelf legs where sitting on the roof top. My first roof line is very near the bottom of the brick window sill I probably only have an couple of inches and it is roof flashing. Hopefully I can cut the legs to fit. Looks like I will be cutting the extension shelf off to be more of a custom fit for that outside unit. Some of my neighbors probably won't like me having a window unit showing on the front of my house either... Thanks for the video.
Great video as always. My question do you have to change out your electrical 3 plug sockets in your room.
One thing I would have done is to move the 2 support brackets outward 1 or 2 holes so that the support pads would contact the siding in an area where it would not crush it.
Moving the support bracket pad legs in or out changes the tilt angle of the AC. The AC should only be tilted slightly down for condensation drainage.
I installed mine and did a pretty solid set up that doesn't allow any leaks, gaps, and is very sturdy. Because of this, I was hoping to leave my unit installed throughout the winter and place a winter cover on the exterior. Does anyone have any recommendations on the best cover set up?
I have used a regular AC cover to leave it in year round..haven't had any difficulty. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Quick question for you sir, do you think there is enough gap between the AC and the window for a screen that slides to fit in there as well? I have been looking at these for a while, but I really want to use them with a screen as well so on a cooler day here North East I can slide the window open and have the screen still there. Thank you in advance.
I just got one and in my case there is no room for the screen
We just watched your video. I was curious, how wide is your window and how deep is the window ledge? Thank you for your time👍🏻
Window is 32 inches wide and 8.5 inches deep. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Sounds interesting. How low will it go. The boss likes the room cold.
hi jeff do you think i could use this without having to screw into my window. i dont want to ruin my beautiful old wood windows with drilling. ? thank you for your help! (another idea - could i do away with the mounting bracket all together, if i don't plan to ever open my window?) thank you!
The screws are used to safely secure the unit and you need the mounting rack to help support the U shape. Hope this helped. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Unfortunately my window isn’t wide enough to fit the brackets completely (max width says 36 inches). However I was playing around with this and despite that it seems pretty secure. I only screwed in one side for a little security but still works pretty well.
Cool I really really like that one. Could they have an app for that it’s been being connected via Internet app oh crud… I love the sound so I can put you to sleep
I just ordered the 8k. My old GE has served me well, but after twenty years... It was getting loud anyways.
How many inches does it extend outside the window?
Looks cool i like it.
It sure is cool. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
The U shape unit is a great idea, but installation is not easy. Also it doesn't come with a remote to use in case the app or WiFi fail
Strange, mine has a remote. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
remote was white and it's kinda big it's on top in the foam, hope you didn't throw it out with the foam :(
@@Jeffreviews4u mine came with a remote too.
Can you hear the high pitched noise from the inside ? We can hear it at 8:20
How long is the power cord?
This midea is good for apartments or only houses
I wonder if they could also design one thats completely separate like a split system...🤔 Have it run through a 6 to 12ft hose...that way you can drill a hole through a wall instead of having it in a window...
I'm currently reviewing one that says their product is like a mini split... although it's still a window unit.

You didn't comment about whether the unit actually cooled the room or that side of the house. It looks good and sounds good, but does it really do it's job?
Typically it gets to 80+ in that room. The AC is set to 70 and separate thermostat in the room is reading at 71 (much cooler). Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
@lemmieatit I want to know that too.....
Yeah, but does it cool the room efficiently?
Sorry to chime in on you with our Midea AC problems. We Love our two 10k BTU U-shape AC's. Don't know about all that other positive talk about the product. The AC's worked just fine the 1st time we set them up with the Midea android app on our 2.4Ghz Wifi. One Year later, 2021, we upgraded our phones & reloaded the apps hoping all was ok. Not so. Neither two of our Model No.: MAW12V1QWT U-Shape AC's are working with the Android APP. The app will not save the detected AC's configuration to the App. So we contacted tech support. As suggested by their tech support we’ve tried the Midea app & their newer MSmartLife App as an alternative work around, as recommended by them, for our Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy S21. All having the latest updates and no OS older than Android 10.
But the app goes thru its paces during the setup & when it gets to 99% for the "Phone Reconnect portion", it freezes every time for about 2 minutes and then throws us to an unsuccessful error redirecting us to the Midea help tips, of which do not work for our case so far. Can anyone Help? Has anyone else seen this gotten this corrected?
Does it really work with Alexa? I cannot make that work.
I have a 5000 btu that cools my room just fine but is loud. Will these 8000 btu make my room uncomfortably cold?
in my opinion it all depends on what you put you room temperature on...the btu number is how much heat can be removed...more btus the quicker it takes the heat out. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I'm buying one for my tent!
I'd be interested to know how it went in a tent.
It's a really quiet unit. I just bought one on Amazon for a crazy low price. Crossing my fingers 🤞
Mine is still working great. Thanks for stopping by and commenting 👍
@@Jeffreviews4u that's great to know! Thanks for the great video.
Where are these units made?
Does it come with a standard remote control? Really don't want to use my phone. Thanks
No, mine only came with the app option. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Can this be installed on the top window?
Can you tell us which unit was quieter, Midea or Soleus? Thank you
In my experience Midea is quieter.
Looks good! How well does it maintain temperature? Unless it’s an optical illusion, it looks to me like the outside unit is sloping down. Most units say they are supposed to be level, however this may not be the case with yours. Last, I would move the stops on the back of the rack to tight against the unit, then cut off the excess. Give us an update after you’ve used a while. Thanks, Jeff!
It has been cooling pretty good. I have it set to 70, I have another thermometer in the room and it reads at 70. The instructions have you install it at a light downward slope...bubble still in the lines but tilts slightly for drainage.
What’s the point of the ‘U’ if the AC still blocks the window??!!!
what is the benefit of the U shape? smaller window opening to therm-proof?
It keeps all of the sound outside and the pretty look inside. It's quiet.
Does anyone know how to remove the vent part where the air comes out to clean the fans?!
I'm not sure it can be removed. I use a toothbrush to clean it out.
@@Jeffreviews4u how did you fit a brush through their? I’ll try that but the fans are differently difficult to get too
How many cubic feet are you cooling? I think that's important so we can compare to manufacturers specs.
The room is 300 Sq ft Hope this helps. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Boy, glad I saw this ...no way I want this kind of hassle putting in a window unit ...ridiculous...looks terrible from outside
It is quite the ordeal to install but it keeps the room cool. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Nice
So looking at the bad reviews on both the Soleus and Midea I'm concerned. The Soleus has a drain plug that needs to be emptied a lot and leaks when it's full. I hear that it has a pump but throughs up an FL code. The negative on the Midea is it cant cool a room without it being on high all day and struggles when its hot outside.
I've heard that the Soleus has an upgraded model without the drain tube...I have the midea on eco mode and the room stays comfortable...that being said it's in a bedroom (250 Sq ft)
@@Jeffreviews4u Thanks for the update Jeff
Great video ... Q: can u install it from inside a 2nd floor window or do u need a ladder and go outside and do it ?
3:02 if your ledge is so far outside it won'r allow that pair of leg braces to drop back towards you building. Bad news, -- Alternative is figure out a stack out there. Something you can attach is best. -- Pay mind to honor the amount of tilt needed for outside drainage. It is worth it $300-$400.
Can I use this air conditioner on a sliding window not up and down window?
No, these wouldn't work on their side. Thanks for stopping by and commenting 🙂 👍
Maybe a hacksaw or sawzall the extra length?
Do you think $400 is a lot of money for home window AC try $800 for a white what is it 1200 BTU or was it WATTs
What a/c do you think is better the soleus or midea u shape
I'd lean toward the Midea based on price...almost half the cost of the soleus. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
is there a water drip hole in the back
Mine didn't have a drip hole, however it drains out of the back. Thanks for stopping by and commenting 👍
I appreciate this clear installation. The manufacturer says you have to remove it for winter. Do you have to remove everything or just the A/C unit? Thanks.
Everything will have to come out...it’s a pain.
@@Jeffreviews4u Thanks for your prompt response. Have you looked into the kapsulair A/C unit?
@@adora721lux8 I saw a commercial recently. I'll be reviewing another window AC that sits on the saddle of the window....it's like the U shape but upside down...so like a n...lol. looks interesting.
@@Jeffreviews4u My HOA is concerned with condensation leaking. Did you have any issues with water leaking because of condensation? If yes, what workaround would you suggest? Thanks.
@@adora721lux8 I haven't had any leaks...I am reviewing another style (the u is upside down - n style) looks promising...should be out this weekend.
They say its more quiet because the motor is completely outside and separated by the closed window from the house, do you find that its true? Quietness is the most important thing to me, i'm sensitive to noize.
Yes it is quieter than a typical window unit, but it is not silent. You can still hear it. I don't like loud noises either and I'm not bothered by this unit. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Also, on Amazon, the small one is 339. I'm only saving 100 for three months and buying an Amazon gift card, and add 45 for tax reasons
Anyone got mold issues??? Was Goin to buy 2 but getting a lil nervous
Why would you be nervous about buying two brand new air conditioners?
All windows and split unit air conditioners have one flow: do not provide fresh air. I have similar air conditioner from Frigidaire, I also ha air quality meter. After around 2 hour when it work and all windows are close the air inside fail all the contamination limits. That a Sirius proble.
Embarrassed to ask this, but do you have to use the bracket? I only ask because usually just put my AC into the window with screws. If it needs the bracket, I will try to find a handyman.
I would say yes, just because of the design. It adds stability to the overall unit. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Don't hire a handyman for the bracket. The company has an actual install guide. Literally anyone can install this.
Is there anywhere that is selling Midea U Air Conditioner? I’m buy a unit before summer or when the heat kicks in...
I bought mine on Amazon...not sure about local sellers. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
@@Jeffreviews4u I appreciate the review honestly :) Juss found out they are restocking them every two to seven days but limited amount
Walmart. 10,000 btu for $399. (I live in 🇨🇦 Canada)
Lowe's is the cheapest place I found to order this. Also, the only one to have it in stock.
The brackets look like they would work for houses and not for apartments that are not on the ground floor. They seem too flimsy for a 2nd to 100 story apartment. What would you suggest instead?
I'd say be careful installing but I can't see why it shouldn't work. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I have the same problem. I do not like the way the bracket sticks out like that. They should make it where it’s adjustable. It goes in and out. I think it’s really an eyesore. Why would they even make it like that where it sticks out like that it just looks really weird. Wish I could change mine.
