- OK here is a video showing all the mods I made to my new Midea U shape A/C Unit. I am making this video because I get comments & emails dailey about what did U do ,how do I do this on & on. I also got a email from Midea Corp. Asking if I would send them my old unit back to them for evaluation & they offed to send me a new unit to replace it. Pic of the email end of video. Seems very nice that they want to improve there products. Not a sponsored Video.

Nice helpful video! I’m going to doctor all of mine this coming week! And thanks for recommending it way back. It’s been great for our little off grid solar project.
I contacted Media via online chat and asked if drilling a hole in the back of the unit for drainage would void the warranty . They replied that as long as a professional does it ,It will not void the warranty. My son is an HVAC tech and I asked if I brought the unit at Lowes and my son drilled the holes would it still be covered and they said yes. And I printed the chat out for proof but remember the warranty is only for one year for less than $500.00 is it really worth worrying about the Warranty? Thank you TheKiloG69 for all the information and for taking the time to make the video`s...................................................Ken
The window awning over the unit is really smart too. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks boss. I never trust the good reviews and always read the negative to see what can go wrong (other than shipping issues). You had the answers to all the problems. Now I can get this on sale lol
Love mine now.
Have to take mine apart and clean it, the air coming out blows cold but is molded and smells like urine funny enough. My wife said no way we are turning it back on. So here I go about to take this thing apart, will definitely do the modifications you did to your unit.
The pre filter is a Duck brand 25 by 15 cut to fit filter. You can get them at Lowe's home depot ebay Amazon everywhere.
I don't see the filter online on home depot site. I searched duck air filter, and 25 x 15 air filter. However unfounded. What I do see is the AC-Safe Factory Plus A/C filter about 24 x 13. Maybe you have the Sku #?
I had one that got really bad so I got rid of it. After watching this video I decided to do everything you said and I now a month later still a moldy smell coming from it.
Best window A/C ever for solar powered home. I have the same unit and I noticed there is a hole, halfway up, on one side of the outdoor portion of the unit where water will drain out if it gets too full. However, the outside mount bracket tends to block the hole opening, leading to a back up of condensation into the front part of the unit. Many window units now lack drain holes and use the water build up for the fan to sling and cool the condenser. But if I have to choose between a hot condenser and black mold, I’m breaking out my cordless drill like you did! 👍⚡️🤠
It is a dramatic difference these changes made. I shared all I did with the Midia guy in the reply email I sent them. Thanks for watching.
@@TheKiloG69 based on my past success with warranty claims, I won’t lose any sleep about voiding it! 🤣
That hole half way up sits inside the window sill on some thick windows, meaning it drains water directly into your window if you're unlucky. This unit is a combination of great design and god awful design.
@@ottawahealthlaw I agree, it’s a great A/C unit but there’s probably no single design that is ideal for every window mounting situation. If you can’t tilt the unit back a few degrees towards the outside, it may not work well.
Thank you for this! My unit is very moldy around the inside area as well. Going to do these fixes but need to clean first. I was thinking bleach and a water pik. What did you use to clean it?
Anyone taking the fan out completely to clean it and/or do a motor replacement, and wondering how to get up on the underside of the blades, I used two different tools. One was a small diameter faucet brush I got at a local hardware store, it works on a lot of the gaps but some of them are just too tight. You can also use the GUM Proxabrush go-between dental brushes. They are very small, however you will likely have to make at least two passes on every blade because of this.
For replacement bearing grease, I'll be using Super Lube synthetic multi-purpose grease when I re-assemble it. I've done all the modifications in this video except I will probably leave the fan grill in, haven't decided yet. It's easy enough to rip out later anyway. Hoping to get better results this time. My current unit I took apart before, but couldn't get under the blades and waterpik wasn't really working well for me, and still got horrible smell despite cleaning everything else while disassembled. So hoping this time works better, with a different unit I had to take apart to replace a noisy motor on anyway.
3:28 prefilter. 4:04 i need to tilt mine further. Drilling in the front corners? Maybe i will do both. 6:48 Awning outside? Is it for keeping rain or snow off unit? To reduce heat of warm weather sun?
I've heard that the water spraying back on the coils helps with the efficiency but it also creates the problems people have. How much efficiency is lost on the unit after making this change? It looks like you have a wattage meter hooked up so I'm assuming you are tracking that?
I just purchased the 12,000 btu model. Now I'm wondering if any of your mods have made it into the the models they sell now.
Fantastic! My 8,000 cooling BTU Toshiba (three years old and still running strong) has been on 62F max cool (not ECO mode) all season 24/7. It never cycles down...full blast. This is the one on my solar circuit. It is mounted flat, no mods. My front filter is like yours, but it really even gets dirty.
What material did you use for the pre filter?
I wonder if drilling the holes where you did reduces the efficiency of the unit a bit. The slinger fan is supposed to have some water to sling onto the coils, and having them down so low could prevent enough of that happening. Judging by what you said early on in the video, there was too much, but I would now worry if there was too little.
I love my MideaU but you have to take the entire thing apart to clean the coil. I bet most people have never cleaned theirs!
The very latest midea's now have a 3/4" drain plug on the right rear of the unit.. they dont say to remove it when installing but , thats the first thing I did when installing it because of the mildew reports... pulled that plug out so it could drain and made sure it was tilted like urs, downward so water could drain..
Good news.
We just bought one a few weeks ago I don’t remember seeing a drain plug. I’ll have to check.
Excellent ideas ,can you put links to the pre filter ?Thank you for sharing .
It is a Duck Brand A/C cut to size filter. 24 x 15 inch cut to size. U can get them any were, stores eBay amazon
I'm searching through your videos to see if you Showed us how you connect the Midea to solar ,thanks for the inspiration .
My home runs on solar To charge a big lithium battery bank connected to dc to ac inverters . I use all normal house hold equipment any one would use. U can view the entire journey to freedom from the grid on the TN off grid play list.
I found Duck AC filter 24x15 will that work? Thanks
👍😎
Hey There has been other manufactured units using split design controls/ducts inside compressor outside. All window, wall AC units need to pitched little for condensation to flow out of a drain usually utilizing a small spigot. The reason these spit water is because weak drain system and design faults
I have a suggestion for Midea ,send us a promo code so We can order one .
Quick comment, I installed my 8k btu unit today. It looks like they actually have a drain hole now(3/4 inch) with a rubber grommet on the back right side very close to where you drilled the holes. It has a warning saying to only remove the rubber gromet for storage and that it is needed to function properly. I assume they have taken the issues on earlier units and hopefully improved on this issue.
Yes mi e also has this plug. However I do see a water pooling in the outerunit since the plug "shouldnt" be removed- So I wonder what they changed besides adding the plug.
All 9 in installed this year have that plug. Last year no plug. I always installed them with a noticeable lean (old habits die hard). I imagine I'm lucky none of them have developed any of the common problems. But I absolutely agree with everything this gentleman has done.
You turned them down?!! What!! That’s crazy because they are expensive
I'm shopping around was Goin to grab 2 of them wondering if I should get a reg old box shaped one 🤔
I have same question since Midea has a smart inverter box shaped one with same energy claims, wonder if it operates the same. I doubt I will ever be opening my window
We love this unit except it doesn’t dehumidify the room. How is water getting back inside a split unit?
It isn't. The front of the AC recycles air inside the house. The two halves of the unit are completely separate aside from the refrigerant lines.
Have you had any problems removing the water from the unit? As the water is used to cool the unit. Thanks
No best move ever.
Awesome video! Can i get an update? are you still using this unit and is it still free of mold? thanks
Yes and yes.
Yes it is. Love it.
Sorry to bother you with another question, but what material did you use for a pre-filter? Trying to figure out 07 error code on my Midea…..
Duck brand filter look in the comments.
@@TheKiloG69 Thank you. We like this AC, but the 07 error code appears frequently for about 20-30 seconds.
@@jeffreykropp7664 07 code is something about the fan being blocked from spinning
@@Janzer_ I removed the outside top cover and could see nothing physically interfering with the fan. Someone else suggested the 07 code may relate to an exterior temperature sensor? So far the AC resumes operation after the 07 code blinks 18 or 19 times, but it is worrisome that the AC will quit during this hot weather.....
Google Midea Error Code 07 and there are a lot of things that cause this error.
Hi! Mine needs the Freon recharged. Can that be done with this unit?
If it needs freon you got a leak probably in the coils somewhere
0:57 They've revised the units over the past 3 years. Surprised and not surprised they were willing to replace.
do they have drain plugs ports now? I have been thinking about getting one and cant find that answer online as of yet. I live in the south and its very humid and I need the water to drain in real time.
I just installed mine today. There is a plugcovering a drain hole. The compressor on the outside of unit is soo quiet and smooth running.@lumbeeman01
Just purchased 2 of the 12000btu models to run on my EcoFlow solar system in emergencies.
Did you drill the holes in the corners from inside or is the condenser far enough away to drill from outside?
Subbed.
I would advise taking the top of the AC unit off so you can see the coils and avoid damaging them I did damage one of my units doing this. Lucky for me I was able to repair it.
@@TheKiloG69what is the advantage of removing the wire fan guard?
To clean the blower wheel.@@hardtruth2039
I've purchased mine in 2020 and has been working good until this year. I have a wattage meter just like you. it's 85 outside and I've tried to run it on cool at 60 and on boost and it still stays at 390-400 watts. I've only seen it a couple of times in the past few years hit 800-900 watts. I'm sure my warranty has been out so I drilled holes like you and cut that grill out in the front. the back is a little dirty. Do you think if I clean the back area and the fins it would work stronger like its supposed to?
Yes get some coil cleaner, home depot ,Lowe's ect.
@@TheKiloG69 Thank you very much sir! And thank you for the quick response!
Just wanted to give an update. I cleaned the coils and the whole back area really good and drilled holes for it to drain when running. That didn’t do the trick. It would not get higher than 400watts with eco off and set to the coolest setting and fan on high. Well looked at my fan and it was nasty. So I clean it the best I could without take the unit apart and bam work’s freaking awesome! 1100 watts and freezing cold blasting air. So now I Will completely take apart the front and get that fan out and clean everything I can see that’s dirty.
@@tannerdegeyter3133 Been googling a lot since I might be getting one soon and found another fix to get full power all the time. Remove the front grate and find the temp sensor which should be a thick plastic tube connected to a wire. You can string it out the hole in the bottom and leave it hanging or insulate it with a sock or something. Tricking it into thinking it's warmer inside than it actually is will make the condenser run full blast to try to compensate.
that was a issue for you but you rectified the issue
Just installed my 12k for the 3rd season and its not cooling.
Any error codes?
No error codes. Purchased a 15,100 btu fridgidare at a scratch and dent place for $125, new never used , had the grounding prong on the plug broken off. Cut the one off the midea ( exact same rated) and two minutes of soldering later had a working a/c. Fridgidare for the win! Screw midea and their 1 year warranty. 🖕
These units NEED to have water as part of the cooling and efficiency. Do not drill a hole.
Bro, I have the latest one..these come with a 3/4" drain hole and plug.. I removed that plug on day 1 and gave it the proper tilt so water could drain.. these do Not Need water buildup inside to cool well.. mine is icey cold and drains properly..

Make sure you DRILL THE HOLE ON THE CORRECT SIDE THAT HE SHOWS IN THE VIDEO. Otherwise you might hit one of the compressor tubes!
He drilled two holes, one on left and right (front side).
let me put i't on double speed
This is a 12,000 btu unit.
Did drilling the 2 drain holes help keep it from building up mold? I got mine in late August. I live in SW Florida. Just looked in mine and see mold starting on the blue fan.
Absolutely.
Thanks. I just had a new 8k btu show up. I put a hole in the cooling fins on the left bottom corner. That first one is toast now. I am not that worried. It was full of slime and mold. I just put the new one in it's place. I will just pop a hole on the right side.
Thanks again. Just put 3 holes in this new one. Sucks to be out a few hundred dollars. But I am more concerned about the family's health. That 1st unit was absolutely packed full of mold and slime in the part that's outside.
Be sure to take the cover off on the rear of the AC unit so you don't hit the cooling lines. That said I also damaged my first unit 2 years old by unclogging the holes I had put in it not very carefully and puncturing the line. I Used silver sodder to close the hole on damaged the unit. Used my hvac vacuum pump to evacuate the system down for 15 minutes, then filled it up with a can of 134 auto freon back up and running. 1 12 oz can of freon worked great.
Just makes common sense your changes
Thanks I thought so.
As others have said, the fkn mold and black gunk on the inside hamster wheel is a deal breaker! can't recommend this model anymore.
just buy a normal unit and you wont have any problems
I have 3 std window units. They don't compare that's why they are on the storage shelf.
@@TheKiloG69 first they are the same units just different housings the parts and cooling would be the same but st units have less fuss - and thats what happens when you dont keep the units clean you say they dont work and put them in storage
36 years in Florida I know the difference in AC units thank you very much. The media units are InverterAC units they use 1/3 the energy the regular units use much quieter much more efficient thanks for your comment.
Normal units suck compared to these.
As long as they’re installed with the correct slope there’s no mold problem.
