EDIT Nov 21, 2022: *Cerbios v2.1.0* was released today with support for v1.6 motherboards. There have also been many developments over the past months including UDMA5 support for supported SATA adapters. Be sure to get in touch with the Cerbios team on Discord to say hello and get the most up-to-date info: discord.gg/VcdSfajQGK Original comment: As mentioned in the outro, I'll revisit this pinned comment for the next couple of months to address recurring questions that may arise about this project or my experience with Cerbios. Regarding the Aladdin Modchip: there are reports that some newer Aladdin XTs are only flashable using a programmer and will fail when flashed in the Xbox. I have not experienced this yet on any of my recent Aladdin XTs despite receiving the same ones that some folks have reported trouble with (49LF020A). Your mileage may vary so best to be prepared for a potential unsuccessful flash by picking up a spare Aladdin XT or just buying a better modchip altogether. I always flash using Resctoox v6.0 as I demonstrate in this video and have not had any problems (yet). Feel free to share your experience with this as I'm sure it will be helpful for folks trying this mod. I don't recommend trying Cerbios without a modchip (i.e. TSOP) if you're a beginner. Fixing a bricked TSOP wouldn't be fun. Swapping a $10 modchip is a piece of cake. HDD Cluster Size: I chose a HDD cluster size of 512K, even though 2-4TB drives can use 256K clusters and save lots of space when copying small files. The problem with 256K clusters is the directory limit of 4096 files per folder. This sounds like a lot, but many (uncompressed) games have 6000+ files of artwork or sound in sub folders. You won't have this problem when using XISOs. Unfortunately my game collection is extracted from archives and I have little desire to recollect ISOs of all my games. The only downside to 512K clusters is wasted space (1.6TB collection on PC took 2.5TB of space on Xbox). This is acceptable to me because storage is cheap and I just want all my games on one Xbox. Do you have an ISO collection? Hit me up! ;)
@@4ujeff Alas, you likely have one of the Aladdins that can't be flashed in the Xbox (see note above). You can flash it with a programmer or if you don't have access to one you can pick up an Xblast Aladdin XT from ModzvilleUSA which can be flashed directly from the OS on the modchip.
Do you offer service for xbox v1.4? I was curious how much it would cost? I want to be able to fit a sata ssd; I want to have Original Xbox Live Dashboard installed so I can play on Insignia Live coming out
I was lucky as a kid, My dad bought an xbox and had his friend mod it for me. So many memories playing splitscreen with friends and endless hours playing single player games. The good days of going to a movie rental place, Renting a game then downloading it to the console, It had every SN/Gamecube game as well. I still have it and sometimes start it up for nostalgia. I think my dad realized he had made a mistake when he woke up the following morning to find me still in the living room playing SSX 3 and fuzion frenzy, It was the first all nighter I had ever pulled and can still remember the pure excitement I had when exploring every new game for the first time.
Almost the exact same story, but my dad bought it already modded without knowing it was a modded console at first lol, I had never played on an other Xbox so I though all of the stuff we had in our Xbox was common to every Xbox, and when our Xbox died at somepoint (~6 years later), I decided to buy an other one, and I discovered that the console was so basic without the mods lol So I soft modded it with an old 80GB hardrive I had in an old Windows XP PC that was pretty much useless, 80GB is not that much, but still 10 times more than the original 8GB harddrive and since I mostly play games I grew up with, some games I still have them on discs so I don't really care. I copied in the harddrive only the games I play the most !
This man really put efforts in his fixing, next level stuff! He really cares about what he do and that love really shows. Great video man! Keep up the good work! Quality is perfect as usual!
Yeah, I just stumbled across the channel when it popped up in my trending, don't know how I haven't find it before, love the attention to details and precision at work, you can really see who's experienced and who isn't Oh, and I like the F1 shirt :DD
16TB drives are hella expensive lol funny enough if I knew boarderline didn't know about CerBios I would have told him myself on discord he's a nice guy
@@Hellraiser988 if i was to pay 600 or 700 would you make me one with the emulators?and the majority of the orginal xbox games installed on the hard drive?
This video brought back a lot of memories for me. A little under twenty years ago I was heavily involved in Xbox modding and repair. I would pick up units cheap from pawn shops that had bad laser lenses in them, replace the lens (can you even get those anymore?), and sell or mod them for my personal use. A couple of things I recall about refurbing them is to always pull the power supply and resolder the pins where the power cord goes in. There were so many failures due to the solder joints on the pins cracking that Microsoft sent out free power cords with GFI breakers in them to keep from burning down people's houses. Also as far as temps go I have never encountered the need to redo the thermal paste. I've got a couple of boxes still plugged into our TVs that I've used as media centers for over fifteen years with no problems. I will also mention that the main reason the fans on the 1.0 boxes get noisy is because they are sleeve bearing units. The bearing just wallows out and the fan shaft vibrates. I think on those I just got heat sinks from the 1.6 boxes and swapped them out. Also I found that putting too much lubricant on the gears in the DVD drive actually collected dust over time and caused more problems than dry gears (dust sticks to that lube and the extra gunk would tend to wear the drive belts out). All in all a very good video. It's amazing how much easier the installers have gotten from those days. I kept quite a few large 7200 RPM IDE drives just for these boxes (we don't have a lot of games) but I did tinker with a SATA to IDE adapter one time. I put a 120 gig SSD in there for kicks. It was wicked fast in the menus and loading games. Again I enjoyed the video and the links. I might pull one of the old units off the shelf (I still have several original Xboxes and PS2s left from those days) and try out some of these new tools.
@@jaydaytoday3548 smart one tnx for sharing, using hairdryer probably is useful also especially when its not turning on... btw instead of hairdryer a more ment for it heatgun would probably be what you mean. there are also small heatguns these days better for electronics
This takes me back, although I never modded my own Xbox, all my friends wanted their Xbox is modded and as the only person they knew who could solder I ended up installing mod chips in their xboxes, typically in exchange for a tank of gas and a pizza.
Ahh the good old college days. I've done a favor or two for some pizza and a tank of gas myself, like helping someone move apartments haha. I was a cheap hoe back then. I'm a bit more expensive these days ;)
@@just_2swift It's basically just for convenience. The increased size allows you to access your entire game library all in one place, on original hardware, without using discs, with shorter loading times. You also might be able to install emulators? But even without that it's very handy.
To me, this looks like an official repair job where they replaced the disc drive. Especially since the drive has additional, but seemingly official labels on it and a date of 2003, which would be too late for a 1.0 xbox.
I thought the same. That sticker that goes over the top label on the bottom cover seemed to be something Microsoft would do at the factory. No other person doing repairs would bother placing that sticker at all.
It was definitely sent back for official service. My original Xbox 1.0 system had to have some work done on it by Microsoft as an official recall. It had the same small square sticker and double sticker over the bottom screws.
Lovely build my dude! Been working on a 4tb myself for weeks now :D For XBMC4Gamers, I'd recommend looking for the "Fast Game Parsing" option in the settings. Once you tick that on the xbox wont have to scan the games at all anymore and everything will just been good to go once you boot / reset the xbox.
Thanks Modz! I'm pretty psyched with this build and my older modded build looks like the ugly step-child in comparison. Good luck with your 4TB build and eager to see your project. Thanks for the XBMC tip, I need to spend a bit more time familiarizing myself with the ins and outs.
Fellas, way back in the day, I remember the KI arcade ports (pretty sure a fellow famous youtuber was responsible for that one) and other PC ports and MAME dumps. Are they unobtanium now on the internetz? Its been decades since I bothered checking and I doubt IRC is still around, heh. Cheers.
Wow, that was an acculmenation of everything necessary for the preservation and optimization of mod chipping an Xbox. That was extremely well thought out. A lot of skill sets and knowledge all put together nicely. Excellent soldering skills, and an otherwise optimal loading and configuration of the software required down to loading the box art. Wow, that was probably one of the most comprehensive approaches to checking all the important box's that I've ever seen. That was super impressive. I'm not even jealous. Envious as hell, but not jealous. You really have to immerse yourself in it. As someone who has had an eye on this scene since 2005, this was great 👍 thanks for sharing. You made it look easy!
Just found the channel and subscribed. Already have a 3tb drive. Now I'm highly tempted to mod my og Xbox. All original with the white drive in it. Just opened while watching to see how clean it was. Now I've gotten the modding itch. Thankfully I enjoy working on electronics and PCs.
@@ConstantHappyHourhe can't, because memory expansion for XBOX S/X games is limited to Microsofts proprietary memory upgrades. Which are literally 8x more expensive than NVME storage while also being slower.
since you have the xbox open, a complete recap of the mainboard and psu is possible. the few capacitors near the cpu which are prone to bulge can be replaced with polymer capacitors for extended service life.
I love seeing how much care you give to cleaning up such an old "worthless" machine that would otherwise be considered at the end of its useful life. I knew as soon as you opened the functional optical drive that you weren't gonna half-ass anything. You've definitely earned your channel name. Keep up the good work!
Right after the Cerbios for 1.6 release, I came again to this video, to view your instructions, and everything worked like a charm! Now my Xbox has a more modest drive (1tb) but without the multiple partitions. Flashed it on a standard Aladin Chip just like the one on the video. Thanks for the great content!
I didn't even have an Xbox. But I still watched it to the end. Loved every bit. You really love what you do and that's what makes your videos so engaging and enjoyable. Thank for always bringing such quality content. Respect +++
@@BorderlineOCD *Thank you so much for this incredible video! I slapped the like, subscribe and bell icon harder than Davie504 slaps the bass! You are such a good communicator and you do everything with love. That build is so clean and you cover every detail down to loosening the screws on the GPU fan. I can't imagine any way to be more thorough. I value teachers that explain the "why" and not just the "what" or "do this". All this while presenting in a genuine, not boring, not trying to be over-the-top funny, gimmicky, or emulating another channel. You deserve more subs. I would not hold it against you or skip over a god awful sponsor segment for Manscaped, Raid Shadow Legends, NordVPN, etc.. You deserve to get paid for the amazing free content you provide!* /Butt kissing over... This is so nostalgic! I soft-modded an OG Xbox around ~2010? It was a later version but I forget which 1.3 or 1.5? I think?... Anyways, it involved hot unplugging the IDE from the hard drive at a certain time during boot. I was very nervous because this is not really something IDE drives are designed to do. I even ran an alligator clip between the Xbox an PC ground/chassis. _I am not sure if this was a good or bad idea as I had (as a stupid 20 year old) decided partying was more important than taking advantage of my full two year scholarship for basic digital/analog EET and dropped out half way through_ I believe the purpose of doing it like this was to catch the drive in an "unlocked" state. It took a few tries to get the timing correct. I then nervously plugged the IDE cable into my AMD Windows 2k PC and booted it up. I may have had to hot-plug there too, can't recall. There was a similar but much more basic FATX explorer program I was able to access the partition with. I installed a launcher (EvolutionX or something?), XBMC, some game ROM images, DSL (Damn Small Linux), various video and audio files at different resolutions, codecs, containers, etc... for testing what that baby could play back. I also installed an FTP server/client on both my PC and Xbox. After re-installing the drive that baby booted up to a beautiful new menu and maybe asked me to configure a few things. *I had the same goosebumps as Borderline OCD! and I have them now as I type this!* *Everything worked! Goosebumps intensified!* I immediately busted out the soldiering iron, cutters/strippers, flux, and heat shrink. Shaking with excitement, I repurposed an old XBOX controller extension cable and USB extension cable into a propriety to standard USB adapter. Now I had a mouse, keyboard, and flash drive all working through a USB 2.something hub! *There are four things I remember being so amazed, proud, excited by:* 1. Transfer everything over FTP. This was my first time setting it up and I think I used FileZilla on the PC. 100Mbit felt so fast back then! 2. I was able to watch the original BBC's Planet Earth @1080p without even re-encoding or anything! I forget the format/container... MKV maybe? 3. I had a full desktop OS with DSL with a working keyboard and mouse! It was no Ubuntu but still was incredible at the time! 4. I was able to play (laggy but still amazing at the time) Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, and the *GOAT (imo) GOLDENEYE FARKING 64* through emulation! Emulation of even earlier consoles was like I was on bare metal! XBMC has since forked off into Kodi which is amazing and Plex (also great) even has roots in the source and in developers, I believe. My quick Google search comes up with a lot of people debating about it. I am working on a home NAS. I am torn between Ubuntu Server, OMV, Fedora, FreeNAS, TrueNAS core. I want to run a media server and play around with Apache2 for practicing web developement, Pihole, VM's, etc.. Jellyfin vs Emby vs Plex vs Kodi Dockers vs Jails So many options, so much more research and tinkering, not enough time in a day!
Could tell it was a 1.0 as soon as you hit the power button. The sound of the GPU fan spinning up might as well be part of the boot sound for me. Miss those days.
Your work is so clean. I'm new to this level of project having only done soft mods. I would love to see a video or video series on all the soldering tools you use and instructions on how to get such great results.
All of that work was beautiful. Just amazing work. Electronic Sushi. Art, beauty and functional. Needs to be on a loop in every repair shop to remind people that repairs can be beautiful.
im so glad soft modding is coming back, getting popular again, people are getting interested. the outdated threads can only help so much, you will not find info on all the new stuff. been trying to softmod my first xbox since age 7- finally got around to getting it done and have been wanting to expand on it ever since. thank you for this video
@@justdev8965 didn't fully understand it @ age 7, plus i never really gave it a full research but now that it's got all the support ima get my time back lmaooo
That pink gummy stuff is called PCM (Phase Change Material). It is sometimes pretty hard at room temperature but when it gets hot it flows more like standard thermal paste. Acetone is awesome at getting PCM off luckily.
I remember using different stuff to try and get the thermal paste, I spent like 10 mins getting it off slowly. Then I used WD40, and it wiped off like nothing. I was quite astonished.
I really love this channel I can tell from watching the videos that he has a real passion for what he's doing. And that's what keeps me coming back for more...Great job sir
@@BorderlineOCD I would love to send you my Xbox to mod for me like you did this one and great video I just wish I was tech savvy to get stuff done like you do but it's very hard to learn when you didn't have a computer growing up. Anyways take care and I'm a new subscriber, no matter how much I watch the video I still will never understand on how to get the job done.
Amazing job going through each part with attention to detain, a true perfectionist. This kind of makes me want to build one with a full NTSC game library and an HD video mod to top it off and it would make an amazing complete build.
Did you get to building one? I must say i bought one with the full NTSC Library of games + Ninja massive Emulator & its been without a doubt my best purchase of 2023.
Man this takes me back. I think I used a Team Xecuter chip back in the day, messed it up, had it fixed by someone who actually knew how to do it :D It makes me happy that this scene is alive and kicking
Really nice work on the video notes, links and chapters too. Some very helpful info there, and easy to get to the relevant section when doing this job. Your videos have always been of a high standard, and this is just taking it to the next level.
Appreciate the feedback. This is actually the first time I use chapters. I don't usually care for them but this video is on the longer side compared to my usual projects so I felt like it was good to help folks find the sections they were interested in seeing.
I'm watching this video even though I never did anything like this in my life but for some reason I'm fascinated with how you upgrade the gaming system.
That's how it starts. A little curiously. A bit of tinkering. And before you know it you have a backlog shelf full of dozens of consoles in various stages of disrepair. Good luck on your journey ;)
Wholly recommend not trying to remove the heatsinks without applying heat first. Either run the console for 15-30m or use a heat gun. Very easy to damage the chips trying to pry them off at room temp.
Yup. Disconnect the fans and power it up for a few mins til the heatsink is warm to the touch (not hot enough to burn you, but pretty warm). Then twist the heatsink off (don't pull straight up).
This was so helpful, the 24-inch cable and the folding made it all work. I was able to nest the entire IDE cable in the hard drive tray, no snipping needed. Thank you!
Love this mod vid, cool stuff! I did not know that new mods were released for it until today. They way the mod came about looked awesome. The maintenance work on this was also great, just look how much dust was in the system. Nice F1 shirt btw 31:00 Voicecrack! Haha
Glad you enjoyed it my man. Now as for voice cracks and echos and background noise... I cared enough to buy a Blue Yeti with a proper boom arm for you guys. I do not care enough to do any audio post-processing so this is the best audio you're gonna get from me. The projects are a blast for me to work on, but the editing is like pulling teeth out and I do not enjoy it. Now more importantly, Verstappen or Leclerc?
I dont have an Xbox, I never had an Xbox, I have no care to buy an Xbox ever. However, I just randomly came across this video and watched the full 45 minutes of it. Amazing work.
Very awesome! I've had my Xbox soft modded for ages. I was waiting on a easier way to get a larger hdd in there and have been teaching myself to solder. I think I'm ready to give this a try. Thanks for a great video
Hard modding an Xbox was one of my earliest soldering projects. I only had a bit of soldering practice at the time and I'm definitely much more comfortable doing this stuff now but I still managed to pull it off even back then. That was also without a desoldering gun and I didn't even have a narrow enough tip for my iron. Bottom line you just gotta get in there and do your best. Sounds like you are motivated enough so go for it buddy and god speed.
Big tip, and you can watch Borderline do it in here too, if you remelt and mix in leaded solder, it lowers the melting point of the factory solder and makes it easier to remove. After that it's just down to flux+solder wick (or fine stranded copper wire can do in a pinch)+heat and you should be able to get them cleared out. Another option, but you probably need 2 people to do it, is get one of the spring loaded solder suckers and have one person heat the hole from one side with a soldering iron, and the other person on the other side with the solder sucker. Once the first person has it heated up, they let up just slightly with the soldering iron to make sure they're not fully sealing it off, and then hit the button on the other side and it should suck all the solder out if you had a good seal with the sucker.
That's an awesome work, you're a real pro :) I wish I could do stuff like that, it's so awesome to see the entire game library on the dashboard with the artwork for each game.

I used to have my own modded xbox back in the day. Modded my cousins xboxs as well, had all of the latest software on em too. Didn't know that the developers were still keeping it alive in 2022 that's pretty awesome!
This was an amazing video. Modding an Xbox with a larger hard drive back in the day was quite a doozy (softmodding w/ ide drive hot swapping) but it was the very best mod experience I've ever had. Thrilling to see that new boot screen and run every old-school emulator/mame ROM I could get my hands on. Thanks so much for this!
Yeah that was a nerve wrecking thing!! I remember it well!! Hot swapping the IDE HDD to a PC to extract the HDD KEY, that was only possible if the drive was unlocked by the XBOX when it's turned on. (If you did it wrong, you could brick your original HDD, and an HDD from another XBOX doesn't work due to the KEY linked to the other XBOX...) You also had to copy 2 DIR's from the drive, with a special file manager on your pc.

I was born in 98 but I remember my dad modding his Xbox by doing something involving the 007 game disc and thinking it was insane that I could play home brew games and emulators. This is another level though crazy to see og xbox modding has come so far and is still going strong
Absolutely amazing soldering job! It's refreshing to see such a skill on YT! BTW I might be totally wrong but it seems like your soldering iron tip might be oxidized a bit. I usually dip it hot in citric acid crystals mixed with pieces of solder wire.
The tip itself shouldn't be oxidized, I clean it after each use and tin it with tip tinner. Are you referring to the shaft above the tip itself? That will definitely discolor.
@@BorderlineOCD I think my opinion was skewed by moments like in 18:18. Which is not fair as seconds later the tip was back to being nice and shiny. Ignore my comment then. Well just the part about oxidization - I still stand behind everything else :) Looking forward to you next videos!
Hey dude, you have literally the best repair channel on UA-cam. Is there any chance you could make a short solder tips and tricks video for beginners? I know you talk about them as you do repairs but maybe having an all in one video would be rad. You have some of the most beautiful soldering techniques I’ve ever seen in my life.
That's high praise, thanks. I'll keep it in mind, although I do think there are a lot of good soldering tutorials on YT. The most important thing is to practice, and I think most people just don't give it enough time to see results. I practices with junk systems for hours on end when I started, just removing and putting components back. The first dozen look horrendous. Then they start looking a bit better.
I feel like I'm too old to begin learning how....well, any of this works. It blows my mind and makes no sense to me how circuit boards work or soldering or anything. Idk. This is so mind-blowingly impressive
I've always enjoyed tinkering but I only started going deep on this stuff about 2 years ago. If you look at my earliest videos you'll see my inexperience and a major quality difference overall. All that's to say if it's something you enjoy, you just gotta spend more time on it and practice. It's not glorious at first but once you have a couple of successful projects under your belt its a major confidence boost. We live in a great time my friend. Everything you could possibly ever want to learn is just a UA-cam video or Google search away.
Thank you for actually using the other footprint for the clock cap. So many people I've seen swap this seemingly do not realize that the extra footprint is there because some supercapacitors would've had a different pin spacing.
DUDE!!!!!!! You blew my mind with the xbox gpu fan trick. Im literally going to do that to mine. I have been oiling it but the noise would come back in like a week! also watching you solder made me realize how badly ive been butchering my projects LOLOL
Nice and tidy work as usual, bud. You're right in being proud of that mod work, it turned out quite nice and neat. I actually have a v1.0 system myself, with a 4TB HDD which I have had multiple partitions on for a couple years now. I will definitely be looking into Cerbios in order to clean things up in a similar manner. I don't have modchip though, so, will likely be flashing TSOP, but, should work out fine, I'm sure. Thanks for the video, as I haven't kept up with OG XBox much lately, and I would not have discovered Cerbios without your video here.
I modded one maybe 16yrs ago and still have the memory card and game in a box "just in case" I ever wanted to do it again 🤣😂. It is cool to see people still doing it. Would love to find my old one (lost in a move at some point) and show my kids fusion frenzy... friggin love that game 🤣.
That stock bubblegum thermal paste that was on everything from 2001 to 2010 is such a pain in the ass. I've seen a lot of broken north and south bridges from people trying to pry the heatsink off.
Congratulations on your modded xbox. I totally get why people mod their systems and this is no exception. Must be great having the perfect xbox with almost every game.
I’m subscribing to your channel just from this video! Thank you so much from going over this incredible experience. I can’t wait to try this! You rock!!!
Dear God, so much to be said. It’s a decent amount of work getting it to function, so much so that it will turn off 90% of people interested in having an entire discography on a console. You make it look so easy, clearly you’ve done quite a few. I’d be completely lost if it wasn’t for such a flawless guide like you made here. I love that you even knew it well enough to loosen the screws on the GPU to eliminate the unnecessary noise. Shows just how intimately you know the project. Although tedious, and a lot of checkpoints, the fact that you fit nearly the entire Xbox library onboard is unbelievable. Had no idea it could be done, or look that good and play that well when it’s finished. Excellent work
Thanks for your note buddy. Glad you enjoyed the project. It's a labor of love indeed and while it's a fair amount of work, it's always enjoyable and the result makes it worthwhile. If you're considering taking on a project like this I would say just go for it. The OG Xbox was one of my first proper "mod" projects and it's approachable even for a beginner.
Great video! I have several OG Xbox'es with different modchips.. Time to dust them off, check for leaky caps and get a new HDD (SSD?) installed. I always ran Avalaunch dash on mine with a 1TB IDE HDD.. So cool to see the Xbox modding scene still active almost 20 years after the release.
I think I'm going to give this a try. I bought my first Xbox yesterday, was a 1.0 model. It has never been opened before, the clock capacitor had just started to leak. Only damage done was the silk screen for the components around the clock capacitor came off when cleaning with ipa. I'm going to do a full cap replacement while I have it all apart.
Wow, really great mod job. Looks fantastic. The part about the ide cable being backwards for the Xbox isn’t correct tho, the connector between the disc drive and the hard drive isn’t long enough to connect it in the right way (blue side to the mobo) so everyone just hooks it up that way. There was a post on the old forums years ago where a guy did some test with custom made ide cables and it showed that the Xbox actually has better speeds when it’s hooked up the right way, there is a jumper in the blue side that identifies the cable as ultra ide, but it works fine being plugged in the other way.
Woah alright, thanks for the correction. Neat, I'll have to poke around and see if I can learn a bit more about the jumper thing. I find these irrelevant details fascinating, as I'm sure you can imagine.
Bruh I watch one video on how to teardown an OG Xbox to clean it and next thing you know I get this in my feed. I watched it in its entirety and enjoyed every second of this cool build. Thanks
About 15 years ago I modded my OG XBox with Xecuter mod chip. Thinking back now, I have no idea how I did it but it worked lol. Excellent video! Thank You!
Thanks for the thorough video. Time to update my old modded OG xbox. Mine is a 1.0 with an Xecuter3 chip and 500GB drive. Also, kudos on the great video quality. I've always told people that the OG xbox shell was a dark green and people always swear it's black, however on your closeup of the cleaned up shell you can clearly see it's green.
Well I'm convinced so I'll make this my next project ... Ihave a few Xboxes just hanging out ... I absolutely love the way you kept this install clean. I do all our installs the same and super picky about my wires. 😇
Cool Mod , I have seen them turned into Windows RC and XP Pro Operating systems as so you have a Computer and a Game Box , Not sure if it can Do Win 7 or Higher , That is a Lot of Space on the Drive if it can do 16 TB I suppose it can have a Virtual Box running 20 or More Operating systems in Emulation . What a cool Set up that would be :) QC
Hey OCD! I just came across your site today as I was installing a 2TB drive in my Xbox and I was looking for how people were folding the cable. Your method was the best. And I did the double-sided tape thing because the first time I plugged my adapter in it touched the drive and the Xbox shorted out (but didn't damage anything thankfully). Anyway, great video! I'm actually going to scrub my case now too!
Very nice and easy to follow tutorial! I was planning for this upgrade for the last 10 years and was worried I'm going to break my Xbox! With your help I've upgraded mine to 2TB SSD and it's working like a charm! Just few comments, better not to ftp the carbios but to transfer it directly from the computer since ftp is really tricky in some cases. Also finding the carbios files is extremely difficult!
EDIT Nov 21, 2022: *Cerbios v2.1.0* was released today with support for v1.6 motherboards. There have also been many developments over the past months including UDMA5 support for supported SATA adapters. Be sure to get in touch with the Cerbios team on Discord to say hello and get the most up-to-date info: discord.gg/VcdSfajQGK
Original comment:
As mentioned in the outro, I'll revisit this pinned comment for the next couple of months to address recurring questions that may arise about this project or my experience with Cerbios.
Hit me up! ;)
The last Aladdin I bought also wasn’t flashable in system. Went for a TSOP mod then. Needed the Aladdin anyhow as the OG HDD had died on me…
@@4ujeff Alas, you likely have one of the Aladdins that can't be flashed in the Xbox (see note above). You can flash it with a programmer or if you don't have access to one you can pick up an Xblast Aladdin XT from ModzvilleUSA which can be flashed directly from the OS on the modchip.
@@4ujeff What size BIOS are you flashing?

Almost the exact same story, but my dad bought it already modded without knowing it was a modded console at first lol, I had never played on an other Xbox so I though all of the stuff we had in our Xbox was common to every Xbox, and when our Xbox died at somepoint (~6 years later), I decided to buy an other one, and I discovered that the console was so basic without the mods lol
So I soft modded it with an old 80GB hardrive I had in an old Windows XP PC that was pretty much useless, 80GB is not that much, but still 10 times more than the original 8GB harddrive and since I mostly play games I grew up with, some games I still have them on discs so I don't really care. I copied in the harddrive only the games I play the most !
Wait, it ran GameCube games?

@@Hellraiser988 if i was to pay 600 or 700 would you make me one with the emulators?and the majority of the orginal xbox games installed on the hard drive?
For the heatsinks you can turn on the console for a few seconds and let the chips heat up and that makes it easier to take them off.
Just checked and you can still get og Xbox laser lenses. Praise vsause.
Just got a V1 and lubed the fans. It def helped!
Tip for the heat sinks, use a hairdryer to warm them up and loosen the thermal adhesive
You can also turn the console on and let it run for 10mins and the heatsink will heat itself up.
Reminded me of when people put there ps3s in ovens todo a similar thing when they got the YLoD lol
@@jaydaytoday3548 smart one tnx for sharing, using hairdryer probably is useful also especially when its not turning on... btw instead of hairdryer a more ment for it heatgun would probably be what you mean. there are also small heatguns these days better for electronics
additional tip for cleaning old thermal paste - IPA is almost useless as seen in this video, lighter fluid (naphta) is best solvent.
@@digitalk68 for the OG Xbox, alcohol is completely useless. I’ve always used goo gone
This takes me back, although I never modded my own Xbox, all my friends wanted their Xbox is modded and as the only person they knew who could solder I ended up installing mod chips in their xboxes, typically in exchange for a tank of gas and a pizza.

This was so unbelievably neat and well planned out. Easily the tidiest modding job I've ever seen.
And all the game covers, maaaan.
What purpose does modding this do? I'm a noob forgive me. More space but what else?
@@just_2swift It's basically just for convenience. The increased size allows you to access your entire game library all in one place, on original hardware, without using discs, with shorter loading times. You also might be able to install emulators? But even without that it's very handy.
To me, this looks like an official repair job where they replaced the disc drive. Especially since the drive has additional, but seemingly official labels on it and a date of 2003, which would be too late for a 1.0 xbox.
You are very observant. I didn't notice the date sticker on the optical drive. Good theory.
I thought the same. That sticker that goes over the top label on the bottom cover seemed to be something Microsoft would do at the factory. No other person doing repairs would bother placing that sticker at all.
Same with my v1.0. It has the gpu fan, single row power and conxeant chip but also a Samsung drive, which did not come with 1.0
It was definitely sent back for official service. My original Xbox 1.0 system had to have some work done on it by Microsoft as an official recall. It had the same small square sticker and double sticker over the bottom screws.
Lovely build my dude! Been working on a 4tb myself for weeks now :D
For XBMC4Gamers, I'd recommend looking for the "Fast Game Parsing" option in the settings. Once you tick that on the xbox wont have to scan the games at all anymore and everything will just been good to go once you boot / reset the xbox.
I love it! And to think the Kodi app that I run on my Android players all started on the OG. XBMC 😍💚

/Butt kissing over...
*I had the same goosebumps as Borderline OCD! and I have them now as I type this!*
*Everything worked!
*There are four things I remember being so amazed, proud, excited by:*
Jellyfin vs Emby vs Plex vs Kodi
Dockers vs Jails
So many options, so much more research and tinkering, not enough time in a day!

That pink gummy stuff is called PCM (Phase Change Material). It is sometimes pretty hard at room temperature but when it gets hot it flows more like standard thermal paste. Acetone is awesome at getting PCM off luckily.
A few folks suggested heating it up will definitely do that for the next system.

Using some heat on the gpu heatsink makes it much easier and safer to remove.
Wholly recommend not trying to remove the heatsinks without applying heat first. Either run the console for 15-30m or use a heat gun. Very easy to damage the chips trying to pry them off at room temp.
For real. That removal clip had my face like 😱
I've yet to damage a GPU, but I'm sure warming up the chip is a good idea so I'll give it a shot.
Yup. Disconnect the fans and power it up for a few mins til the heatsink is warm to the touch (not hot enough to burn you, but pretty warm). Then twist the heatsink off (don't pull straight up).
That load up splash screen and sound effects really takes me back
Great build from start to finish, both in terms of hardware and then the software and nice to see the final reward at the end. Great work!

This is the most detailed mod video with the most concise information I've ever seen. Well done bud.
That's an awesome work, you're a real pro :)

It's so well executed and explained, that I wanna do it for myself ^^ And I never modded anything yet ^^

Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc
The video is so satisfying to watch because of how clean of a job you're doing. Keep up!
This is by far the best mod video, you explain everything perfectly. Thank you for your hard work.
I regret selling my original xbox so much...
Mine was rat infested while in storage and thrown away..,. feel the pain 😭
I’m 57 and I’m modding Xboxes. Never too old to learn to do something you are interested in.
Very well done. I enjoyed the patient attention to detail. 👍
if you close your eyes, the vid turns into Jordan Peterson modding an xbox
Ha, nice one. Now go clean your room! ;)
For the heatsink, just warm it up a little bit. 80°c and it's easy remove. Great vídeo. 👏👏
I like how this guy has nail polish in his tool-chest at all times. Allways be prepared!
Watching him take so much care and cleaning the device as well as neat his set up is cures my OCD
It's a labor of love my friend.
Your putting so much more effort into this than I plan on doing with my 1.4. Nice to see though.
Man,.. if i knew this 20yrs ago,... 😓.. well done my friend 👊🏼😎
Great video! Love that you play XBox with the OG "Duke" controller. Classic stuff right there.
So cool to see the Xbox modding scene still active almost 20 years after the release.
without a doubt one of the best tutorials on this matter out there. a big thumbs up from me
I think I'm going to give this a try.
Absolutely Baller! :D I've wanted this for ages and limited me bothering with my xbox due to the HDD size limitation. well.. haha.. NO MORE! :D
Wow great job! Super clean and tons of great tips, I really appreciate that. Hope your having fun with that thing.
Just watched the entire vid. Exceptionally professional work. My compliments
Thanks
Neat job I admire your work and I stayed the whole video even though I never owned an Xbox in my life I just like watching people fixing electrics.
About 15 years ago I modded my OG XBox with Xecuter mod chip. Thinking back now, I have no idea how I did it but it worked lol. Excellent video! Thank You!
Your professionalism is amazing! Congratulations
Thank goodness, I was basically yelling at my screen... repaste the cpu/gpu! So glad you did that. Great tutorial!
I love how u work. Taking the care not to break stuff and methodical.
I remember using Mech Assault and the Action Replay to soft mod my OG Xbox almost 20 years ago! Holy nostalgia!
Yeah buddy.
I’m so glad YT recommended your video. Absolutely amazing content! Subscribed and keep making awesome content!
Well I'm convinced so I'll make this my next project ... Ihave a few Xboxes just hanging out ... I absolutely love the way you kept this install clean. I do all our installs the same and super picky about my wires. 😇
OMG, I saw the way that you fold the IDE Cable... No doubt! You're the Origami Killer in Heavy Rain!!!
Jokes apart... Awesome work!
Ha, thanks.
That is awesome! I've got a couple of Xboxes like that, but a 250Gb drive in each :)
Love the sound of an xbox case top coming off. Great video
This video is a masterclass of hard won experience and skills in what (in 2023) is an arcane and dying art. Very nice work!
Beautiful work my man. Looks like a lot of care, and should make this xbox last for a long time
