Thanks YOU so much! Your band was one of my first metal bands! Before slipknot even! for me. This is a long way back but. You were taking pictures with fans at q and z in ringle Wisconsin. Idk if he was your manager, but i think he was for sure, a staff member of yours. And he asked if we were in line for pictures with you. I will never forget the first time listening to Otep's record-Servas Tra. Was in high school when it was released and was so blown away by the powerhouse vocals of "Blood Pigs" and "T.R.I.C." I played it for all my friends. The first female lead singer to get me to listen to female fronted bands. Was lucky enough to catch Otep live and followed her music with each release since. Thank you Otep for doing this interview! 🔥🔥🔥
I remember seeing OTEP years ago. A friend surprised me for my birthday so I could actually meet the band. She’s so supportive and showed fans a shit ton of love. She showed music comes from the heart 🫶🏼🤘🏼. I appreciate everything she said to me to this day, I’ll never forget it.
Once again a great interview Chris, I'm addicted to your podcast now :D Thanks for reminding me of Otep, it's been a while since I listened to it and I forgot how much I loved this stuff. I jammed a lot of the first two records back in the high school days, gotta check the new one asap.
Amazing interview. You can tell Garza really respects her. He barely said anything for most of this interview and it was perfect. He really tries to play to his guests to get the best possible interview and letting Otep talk was the right call.
Garza hands down has best Podcasts! Never been a huge fan of this band but that doesn’t mean they don’t have some killers songs, and upmost respect to her being an insane vocalist.🤘💀🤘🎸
You're a reasonable person. SS was never my jam. And that's fine. It's the people who don't like a thing and expect others to as well and call them talentless or other absurdities. I'm uploading a video later of an album review I did for a band I found out about through your show, Koyo. At least the first two minutes is me talking about how amazing this podcast is. Ive actually talked about your podcast a few times. You've really got somethin special here, man and in my view the best podcast out there. I hope this thing gets bigger than Rogan, man. Love your show!
She was so cool as a young performer. I remember seeing her after a set hanging around the merch table as a young kid 14yrs., and I though to myself "man, I wish I could dress that cool" she was so cool
Great interview, big respect for the fact that she does what she wants to do, no fucks given. Otep must know that the metal elitists will criticize that they still perform the "nu metal" sound and yet it does not deter her - love it. As someone who is prone to overthinking shit, seeing someone with a strong sense of self is always inspiring
wow i haven't thought of OTEP in at least 15 years. this was a blast from the past but also cool to know they are still making music. gonna go listen to that!
You quite literally saved my life during a very low, probably the lowest I had ever been mentally, state of mind. I remember how I felt in that moment & I knew it wasn’t a good place so I put Otep on like I always do & Perfectly Flawed came on & that moment I knew my worth & what my existence here meant not only for me but everyone around me who my just being here influences. I made a decision to stay, to keep it UA-cam friendly. I now have Perfectly Flawed tattooed on my neck which was done by a childhood friend of mine who became a tattoo shop owner in our adult years. He’s passed now, rip. So it means a lot to me. Otep. Thank you.
I was lucky and seen your show in St. Pete on my birthday a few years ago, it was a blast. Been a fan from the beginning, glad you’re still doing great.
I first heard Otep on a sampler cd I got at Ozzfest 2001 in Atlanta. Later I got the pleasure too see the band perform live on Halloween 2008 at Hooligans Pub & Music hall in Jacksonville, NC.
I am happy to see her still going strong and sad for the people bashing her. When JD from Korn does what she does, it's one thing, but when she does, it's cringe according to them... And about physical and emotional relationships - yes, they both exist, and everyone can combine them as they wish. To me, being with your soul is so much more than being with your body. Yes, we could have kids and pass our souls and knowledge onto them, but you can inherit genes from relatives, and also you can inherit ideas from anyone in the world who ever existed and this is also so important.
I met Otep at Ozzfest in ‘05, she was walking around signing stuff when a few other bands were being douchebags and telling people their labels didn’t let them sign anything, which is horseshit. I told her I loved Sevas Tra and the gratitude in her voice was obviously genuine and it was just a cool moment I never forgot.
So stoked to see this interview! I'll never forget the goosebumps I got the first time I heard the power coming from this amazing woman! I've been a fan since Jihad & Sevas Tra. Thanks for all of the beautiful art you've shared over the years... it's meant so much to me. You're beautiful Otep Shamaya! ❤️🤘✨
Had the pleasure to be one of the opening bands for Otep a few years back in Indianapolis. Was a great show and one of my favorite experiences. Unfortunately someone stole my singer's Barbie pink mic stand , but the venue is in the hood and that shit happens lol.
Haven’t watched yet because I’m saving for later, but god damn am I excited for this episode. First band that I listened to on the regular with a female lead. A powerful one at that. Stoked for this one.
I passed by her at ozzfest, i was wearing a Jessica Simpson shirt 😂, she was really upset by it, she was signing for jaggermeister , so i got in line and asked for a photo 😅, shes flipping off my shirt. She was the only one that day upset by my shirt.
I always saw Otep as a feminist. Maybe Jessica Simpson as the sex object she has been in her early years is just not something you want to give a platform to as a feminist 🤷 maybe there were other reasons.
I've known of Otep for years, but they've always kinda been just on the outskirts of my musical interests. But now after listening to how amazing she is as a person, and her passion, and her huge love for hip-hop, I'm ALL in.
What a great interview love her confidence. It sucks that she gets treated like this but she’s probably the most badass woman. You’re awesome thank you for this interview.
That was an awesome interview! I am what i would class a Nu-Metal baby. Was 12 when i got Slipknots self titled on release in the UK, and my favourite album even to this day is still Mudvaynes LD.50. Otep helped shape in my opinion what my music tastes are to this day (35 now!) Really enjoy listening to the stories of our heroes 🤘
When I saw them open ozzfest 2001*?*... None of it sounded live. Others who were there agree there was lip syncing happening....others argue that'd never be allowed at an ozzfest. I know what I saw & heard.... 😂😂😂. I'm not a fan but the band behind/around her were putting on a show.... She seems to have grown into less of a douche than she was back in the day; think female Fred durst 😅
I've been trying to figure out for so long why I haven't seen OTEP at any of the festivals since Ozzfest. I'm happy to say I have been at both Ozzfest they played
I love otep so much. Jonestown tea is my story too. I've been listening to her and going to her shows since 2006. She was the first pit I was ever in. She's the last show me and my late brother went to together. Amazing interview! Following ♥️🖤
Oh, I found this bc I'm bored to hell waiting for a meeting, and I was only expecting something slightly more entertaining than nothing, but this... completely took me over
I am currently watching your interview with Garza , and I have to say , you're a fucking legend and I have mad respect for you. Also, ty for being a such a positive role model in the lgbtq + interview. I am a gay metal dude living in fl that listens to mainly black and Death metal and some power and metal core. And alot of the times I feel invisible in the gay community and listening to you gives me hope . ty for being a strong outspoken independent woman!
You're awesome Shamaya. I can't think of any other female metal vocalists as talented at you. It's sick how you were quiet cancelled. You're in no way an insufferable political person. Seem really real and authentic. You're early albums were probably one of the main seeds for me working with trauma now as a therapist.
Very interesting interview. About musicians leaving on the House of Secrets record, I had an online chat with Rob Patterson very long time ago when he had been out of Otep for a while already, but before he toured with Korn, he claimed that he had been kicked out.
Honestly I first heard OTEP like a month ago when I decided to replay Saints Row the third and heard them on the in-game radio with 'Rise, Rebel, Resist', immediately fell in love and listened to just this one song like crazy and I'm ashamed to admit it took me until yesterday to finally listen to some more songs and research a bit more. I honestly got sooo surprised seeing that this incredible voice belongs to a woman, one who's also apart of my community which oh my god made me just so happy 😭Otep radiates some really kind and beautiful energy, I'm surprised her music is not as widely known as some in the metal scene but I'm definitely staying and hope to learn some more because aaah
I freaking LOVE Otep! One of my favorites of all time! An unfortunate similarity: my biological father did the same thing to my Mom & I. He kicked her twice in the abdomen while she was 6 months pregnant with me (with his boots on), with full intentions to abort me. Luckily, my Mom managed to carry me to full-term and I was born without issue. And, the bastard got away with it...legally, anyway. She presses charges, but they were dismissed in court. Times were different back in 1976.
You got my subscription and a HUGE thumbs up!! May not agree with the left but what the fuck does that have to do with BADASSERY in personality and absolutely one of the GREATEST voices of a genre!!! Do you , be you, and keep giving me great music! Yes BADASSERY!!!
I loved Otep, That first album blew me away as a kid. I wanted to marry her. I bought many of their albums after that but nothing really grabbed me. The Ascension was pretty good but Sevas Tra was their best by a long shot.
That story about the HBO poetry thing was cool but I don't excuse the other poets for being dicks to her before she performed. Also, I 100% agree about the acting thats involved with performing a song.
Chris & his team are awesome xx thank you for having me xx

Saw otep at ozzfest 04. Came on right before Atreyu... Rocked the crowed. One of the best bands i saw that day.
Me too it was epic. Way better than agayyou
I loved Otep from the first moment I heard her and the band. Top of the heap.
I remember Ozzfest 2001 that Otep played. TRIC was on a sampler being handed out. That was such a dope show
That is how I first heard Otep. It was on the sampler cd I got at that Ozzfest.
I love these podcasts. Thanks!
Had the pleasure to be one of the opening bands for Otep a few years back in Indianapolis. Was a great show and one of my favorite experiences. Unfortunately someone stole my singer's Barbie pink mic stand , but the venue is in the hood and that shit happens lol.
@@garethwable7653 I was at that show in 2016 otep rules
Great ep!
I've known of Otep for years, but they've always kinda been just on the outskirts of my musical interests. But now after listening to how amazing she is as a person, and her passion, and her huge love for hip-hop, I'm ALL in.
She's a fucking legend! "Mayhem's not around anymore, but I am" that's exactly why!!
Keep going!!
xxx
The found OTEP at Ozzfest and been a big fan since.
What a great interview love her confidence. It sucks that she gets treated like this but she’s probably the most badass woman. You’re awesome thank you for this interview.
Yo! What happened to the Christmas tree???
That was an awesome interview! I am what i would class a Nu-Metal baby. Was 12 when i got Slipknots self titled on release in the UK, and my favourite album even to this day is still Mudvaynes LD.50. Otep helped shape in my opinion what my music tastes are to this day (35 now!) Really enjoy listening to the stories of our heroes 🤘
L.D. 50 is a masterpiece
Was watching a live show of Otep from 2002 in Ohio & it sure sounds like her voice is processed through something on the heavy parts
Following ♥️🖤
great episode, I haven't spun otep in probably 14 years, but every note is rushing back into my skull. Definitely going to be diving back in
Oh, I found this bc I'm bored to hell waiting for a meeting, and I was only expecting something slightly more entertaining than nothing, but this... completely took me over
She's awesome. She turned her trauma into a weapon of art. ❤ Much love for her.
Great video man! Have you ever thought about having drowning pool on? I’m sure they got some great stories to tell from this era of music.
This was a good watch
take OTEP on tour!!!!!
This was GREAT!!
Been a Otep fan from the beginning
A fucking legend ! Love you otep. Otep saw me through some dark days.
I like how she handled Phil. I bet he respected her after that.
Thank you!
The screams in otep are the best I’ve ever heard
I still listen to the Jihad EP + the new tracks on Sevas Tra
Saw Otep live @Lakewood as a teenager.....would love to hear Shamaya do vocals for Nile.....
I love the song Ghostflowers!! I love her voice
I saw you live here in Chico California along with static X in 2007 and I smoked weed with Tony Campos.
Question does phil Anselmo use a voice enhancer
BLOOD PIGS, made me a OTEP Fan, F**K YEAH!!, \MM/
Being from Porto, Portugal and hearing Port Wine talk drop mid interview was really strange.
RAD! I gotta throw this out there.. How about having Pierre Blais on the pod???
What did Bill Hicks say about music and drugs? She should probably take that to heart..
“We all live in a yellow tambourine” 🤣
😂😂😂😂
@@vafangul5716 If it aint broke...
Otep is a legend
RESPECT!
You got my subscription and a HUGE thumbs up!! May not agree with the left but what the fuck does that have to do with BADASSERY in personality and absolutely one of the GREATEST voices of a genre!!! Do you , be you, and keep giving me great music! Yes BADASSERY!!!
Otep is my inspiration and I never knew it! Fucking WOW!❤😂
Also, I 100% agree about the acting thats involved with performing a song.
that sick ass Fender 7 strting i want bro🤘🤘
